  • "Mostly good meal, it's a great SOMA area with other interesting places nearby. Dinner was good and they had interesting twists to American style meals. Dinner was a bit slow (more than an hour between apps and dinner), but when we mentioned it they picked up pace."

  • "The menu is very eclectic: not many choices, but unusual pairings. Sometimes misleading, ie. Beef tartare with oyster did not specifify that the oyster had already been incorporated into the beef. We had excellent, attentive service, but at times could barely hear the waitress due to the excessively throbbing, relentlessly loud music. Note to restaurant: Loud, inane music does not show that you are "hip.""

  • "It's my second time here and the food was just as forgettable as the first time. Hamachi with kumquat appetizer had nice citrus note but could have used a touch of acid. Octopus with pork belly had nice grilled scent but tasted like it was precooked and reheated. Duck entree was cooked to perfection but the beets tasted a little bland. Overall food presentation was a little busy visually. Perhaps they precooked a lot of the food to make up for the time they spent on complicated plating."

  • "Menu is interesting, and only 3 entrees to choose from. A little difficult for someone who eats very little meat. The hen roulade was outstanding. Extremely tender meat, and lots of flavor. The asparagus first course with bone marrow vinagrette, when served it was announced as veal bone marrow--had I known it was veal, I would not have ordered it. Veal is so inhumane--I'm surprised this restaurant uses it. Dessert was terrific."

  • "I know that there have been quite a few reviews about how small the portions are….I was pleasantly surprised how filling the dishes we ordered were. With two glasses of wine each, three smaller dishes and two of the medium dishes we were quite satisfied and it only came to $134. The quality was outstanding…the service was up and beyond. We'll be back!"

  • "We've been here for brunch and this time for dinner - the quality of the ingredients, composition of the dishes and presentation are all excellent. It may not be to all people's taste as flavors can be subtle. We were served by brilliant waiter - could not fault his service at all - friendly but not too attentive, an overall really good guy.   • "We arrived at 6 for a reservation and told the wait staff that we had theater tickets for an 8pm show. They asked if we'd like to be out at 7:30 and we agreed on that time. Our appetizers arrived promptly but we sat waiting for an hour for our entrees. Finally at 7:21 we asked someone to find out what had happened to our entrees, and noticed that no one in the restaurant had any entrees on their tables. When our entrees finally showed up, we had to rush to make our performance. The food was okay but not good enough to justify waiting for an hour for our food."

  • "Made a reservation but apparently that didn't matter. Waited almost 30 min before being seated. Ambiance is ok, It is one of those restaurants where you are kinda packed in and can hear everything your neighbors are saying. The food was ok. I am sure a foodie would love it but was just a little over the top for me. I was hoping for just your basics but done to perfection. Will most likely not go back but the bar looked cool. And of course Site glass is next door and that will definitely be a draw. We live in the hood and were hoping for a better experience."

  • "We've been to Central Kitchen three times prior and always enjoyed the service and the food. This Friday evening, the front of the house was less than attentive. We came early and understood that we would probably have to wait until our reservation time. That was fine, however, after giving us a wine list, no one came over to ask us what we wanted. We waited 30 minutes, all the while there was a table-for-two empty. We finally asked the hostess if we were going to be seated (it was our reserved time), and she said "oh yes" and sat us at that same table. We ordered 4 dishes: 2 were great, 2 were really poor. One was crispy kale, that was 90% some type of breaded coating that you couldn't find the kale. Too bad, we were disappointed!"

  • "We used to love Central Kitchen but the last few visits let us down. Service is still warm, knowledgeable, attentive; Sadly food slipped to "cognitive," "interesting," but no longer epicurean. Maybe they are trying to hard or have lost their way. In any event they have great talent and we wish them well, but won't be back for a while."

  • "The decor is almost as delicious as the food and our waitress was the most darling (and knowledgable)! We had liver mousse with cumberland relish and my friend loved it so much she called the chef over and told him he needed to start selling it in the adjoining shop Salumeria. I had the octopus with pork belly, blood sausage, pickled mushroom & almond and nearly died it was so yumm. The wine list was fab too!"

  • "I was instantly wowed by the ambience when I walked into the restaurant. It felt like a patio/secret garden feel. Too bad it was raining or the roof would have been open. The food was not amazing. I felt like the display of the food took more importance than the actual taste or technical skills of the food. I ordered the swordfish and I did not think that it was worth $30 for the plate. It was just steamed veggies cut up small, sauce dotted the plate and 2 small pieces of swordfish. One thing that I did like was the freshness of all of the ingredients and portions were well sized. The thing that tipped the experience over the edge was the exceptional service. Our waitress was very good as she knew exactly when to come."

  • "I've had a soft spot for this restaurant for a while now. Initially, it was the original and thoughtful food and the vibrant space that pulled me in. Previously, the service had been a little inattentive (though warm). It seems the staff has really kicked it up a notch as the service was impeccable this visit: attentive, informed, friendly, and thoughtful. The tasting menu was a fantastic way to sample the breadth of what the kitchen can do. Great meal, great staff, great night."

We had difficulty deciding and then just ordered lots of different dishes and shared. The desserts were exquisite.   • "Made a reservation on Open Table 4 days prior. Called to let them know we were going to be one short as a courteous thing to do. The voicemail says they have a strict policy - show up late and they'll give your table away. Got there at exactly on time, and were told '2 minutes". It took 30 minutes. By the time the food came, most of us were thinking about bed . Restaurants, if you're going to claim that you take reservations, that means that when they show up, there will be a table for them. When there isn't, it tells us clearly that you think you're doing us a huge favor (here's a tip: you're not. It's a commercial transaction and you failed). Lying that it will be two minutes - when you know it will not be - makes it much worse."

  • "We had eaten here 2 weeks prior and had a wonderful experience, so I brought my mom on her visit from Chicago This time we had an absent waiter. After the hostess brought (the wrong) appetizer, it then took 25 minutes and 3x of asking for a piece of bread and the other 2 apps we ordered. After the hostess brought the apps, no one came by to check - one was missing the main ingredient! blood sausage! 25 min later when we were able to flag someone down to order, the food was gone and it was a lost cause. The food took 45 min. In sum, we were there for 2:15, apps were incorrect, no one asked if everything was ok/correct during app or main, we had to flag hostess down for our bill because our waiter couldn't be bothered. I was so embarrassed."

  • "Both the octopus and pork belly that I had as an appertizer and the chicken roulade as the main were exquite with interesting texture and flavors. The dungeoness crab and duck confit were fresh and well-prepared too. The wine selection is more challenging. I ended up with the 06 bordeaux because the two reds that I sampled were too fruit forward for my taste. It would have been helpful if the waitress could recommend the wine pairings for the dishes that I chose. I would go back to try the rest of the menu."

  • "Can't get into Flour + Water? This place is owned by the same folks and has a laid back vibe that flies in the face of hipster posing. We loved the salumis and the pates, but the real star was the farro porridge. The staff is amazing and the bathroom - down a long hall - has the feel of a secret nightclub. Be sure to stop into Trick Dog next door for an amazing cocktail before or after dinner. Or both!"

  • "Our table ate unique, sweet French Toast served in a bowl with a delicious creamy sauce-so much better than maple syrup!; the Fritatta which was a little over-cooked and the delectable Egg, Bacon Sandwich…on Pretzel bread. We had a side of potatoes and the most delicious drink of Valencia OJ and Whey. Service was perfect. Satisfying."

  • "Our waiter was knowledgeable and attentive suggesting charcuterie, their chef's specialty. it did not disappoint. Each of the 4 were delicious and well executed ham terrine and chicken liver mousse with orange compote were favorites. The wine list was eclectic. the pinot we chose was nice. We tried the hen roulade with roasted veg and raisins, yum! and the pork 3 ways - loin - moist pink and luscious, pork belly - crisp and savory, and a perfect housemade pork sausage served with roast veg and Brussels sprouts. There were only 3 selections for mains but there were also lots of other app size selections that we would try next time. We split the interesting deconstructed chocolate pudding, A nice sweet ending to a memorable meal."

  • "First time dining here and sadly disappointed. I enjoyed "Local Corner" much better in terms of food, ambience and selection. Overpriced for what you get. I ordered the "hen" which was salty, not impressed at all. The baked or roasted roots were good but very small portion for the price of an entree elsewhere. I won't be coming back here nor will I recommend it to my friends. The best thing about the place is the service. The music was too loud and we had to ask them to turn it down. Obviously, the staff are not too concerned about the clientele."

  • "I never give 5 stars. This place is amazing.. Our server was quick and friendly, knowledgable about the wine list, not pushy, not overtalkative. The rabbit pâté (or whatever it was called) was fantastic. The Cod was perfectly cooked (white fish is so easy to screw up), the dessert (chocolate custard) was likely the best dessert I have ever had. Great date spot. Limited menu (which is a good thing), only three entrées, but you know that means whichever you choose is going to be good and going to be fresh. Would definitely go back."

I would call the resulting food over-fussy. The prices are high enough that I'm unlikely to go back. In that price range there are places I like better."
