Diner Reviews
  • "The food was great but we probably won't dine there again because of the noise level. The tables run along the wall opposite the bar. There is music playing overhead, maybe for the bar clientele but it makes dining less enjoyable because it's hard to talk to the other people at the table. As it stands, I think this restaurant is better as a bar or to eat dinner but not to dine."

  • "The food was very good and the service acceptable; it was high energy, but maybe a bit loud for conversation for my taste."

  • "Music was a little to loud to hear but everything else was amazing!"

  • "We really enjoyed the trout and pork entrees but the seafood paella was weak. But overall nice atmosphere and food, we would go again."

  • "We were slightly dissapointed with this place. Overall it was OK, the service is fine, the food is good and the place looks nice, but we were expecting just a little bit more. Perhaps more generous portions, or slightly lower prices? The menu could do with more variety of options, to be honest. But the food tasted good. I would recommend trying this place if the location suits you and you have the chance, but I would not be too energetic about it either."

  • "Went here for valentines day, they open doors at 5:30 so we reserved for that time. The family in front of us didn't have reservations but there were plenty of tables open during our dinner so seating was not a problem. Good to come early! We ordered the cheese plate, and a couple of mixed drinks, the pork dish and the steak frites. Loved everything! Best steak I've had in a while cooked perfect medium rare as I ordered it. Passed on dessert b/c the chocolate one took 20 minutes... so order that with the meal if you like chocolate desserts! I also loved it was not super bright or loud in there so we were able to hear our own conversation."

  • "The food was absolutely amazing. The steak frites (ordered rare) had a lot of fat on it (which I find inedible) but that comes with ordering it rare. The chocolate terrine was so good I can still picture it in my mind. The music was all over the place unfortunately; for a restaurant with such a nice low light ambience, I would imagine jazz would fit a lot better than Jay-Z and Kanye (which was playing). All in all, I would return again."

  • "Central Kitchen was fine. Open Table was not. You did not get reservation to them, though I had confirmation from you. Not good for my confidence in Open Table."

  • "I took my grandma here the other night and we had a really wonderful time. The food is really special- we had the grilled octopus, mussels, steak tartar, and duck confit salad, all of which were nearly flawless dishes. Our waitress was incredibly accommodating and extremely nice. Between the atmosphere, the delicious food, and the really generous service, we had a really amazing meal. And this was my second time! I can't wait for my third! By far my favorite Boston dining experience since moving out from NYC!"

  • "Great place, food is terrific (most of the time), and the ambiance alone makes it a neighborhood gem."

  • "Was looking for a before-theater dinner spot for a party of three. Was pleasantly surprised to find a vibrant, yet not loud, atmosphere at Central Kitchen. All courses were well prepared and flavorful -- good quality with no pretense. Our server was astoundingly well informed and enthusiastic about food and wine. Again, no pretense -- just good, straightforward info and an affable manner. In an era where so many restaurants play music that is so loud that people have difficulty talking over it (thus causing people to speak loudly, raising the general volume of the place even further), it was a pleasure to be able to carry on a dinner conversation over a good meal -- well prepared and well served."

  • "Some very good food, some dry, flavorless food. Plus a waitress so sad I wanted to pull out a chair and give her some counseling. Still, I'd try this place again. Good atmosphere and potential."

  • "Brought out of town guests here because Central has always been consistent. They loved the steak frites and I was very happy that they were happy! Flavorful steak, great frites, and always surprisingly tasty greens."

  • "Needed dinner in Central to discuss business and give an outsider feel for Boston's seafood heritage. Central Kitchen came through soups, mussels and East Coast Ciopino! Well done!"

  • "On Central Kitchen's compact, but robust menu there is nothing I would not be happy to eat. The hardest part is choosing a plan, with many small plates easily combined and larger dishes stuffed with tempting ingredients. The corner tables at the front are fantastic and the wood of the decor warm what could otherwise be an industrial-feeling space. The staff easily accommodated our showtime deadline without making us feel rushed. A wonderful meal in a cozy, comfortable space."

  • "Been eating at central for over ten years, and I keep going back. They always keep the menu fresh, and always have great veggie and seafood options."

  • "A nice little casual yet upscale bistro/pub style place, with interesting food, albeit a small menu. We went as we were attending a concert nearby - not sure I would go otherwise, but if I lived in the neighborhood (Central Square) I would go back."

  • "I was with a group of BC alums and significant others. Choosing Central Kitchen was the highlight of our weekend in Boston. We were 8 people so had the chance to sample just about every item on the menu. Those who had the steak, raved about it. I tried the signature chicken dish at server's recommendation and it was outstanding. I heard great comments about the bluefish, the duck confit salad, the musels, and on and on. Wine list is excellent. Avery is a star!"

  • "We ate here in the winter. The food and drinks were very good (mussels, caesar salad, blue fish) but about 2/3 of the restaurant give or take is affected by the single door which opens at regular intervals admitting a cold breeze that made it hard for me to really settle in and relax with my wife. I mentioned it to the waitress who was quite familiar with the problem. She reported they are working on it and may install a heater above the entrance "at some point"."

  • "I had come to Central Kitchen after reading previous great reviews and they certainly delivered. Their Menu was not ordinary in an outstanding way, providing great selection. The drinks were outstanding as well."

  • "This was our second time back and again, the food was amazing. Highly recommend the steak tartare and the duck confit appetizer and the pork loin entree. Everything else we ordered was also great - but those dishes really stood out. Also, we were eating with a 1.5 year old - and the staff was very nice and accommodating."
