Diner Reviews
  • "We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Cellar 49. The food was all of the highest quality, the pub atmosphere was upscale, and the menu was pub fare on a gourmet level. Cannot wait to return, they have an extensive wine and liquor list, local brews, everything was top notch."

  • "The restaurant has a very nice ambience and the service is very good. My husband loved the salmon entrée. However, the menu should include at least one "true" pasta dish, one chicken dish which is not fried plus a "true" vegetarian grilled vegetable dish."

  • "The bread had been frozen and re-baked, it was soggy on the bottom and chewy. The same for the flatbread, the dough was soggy. The scallops and the ribs were too salty. The waiter was friendly, but he should have asked why we left our plates half full. The location of the restaurant and the ambience were gorgeous, but our meal was a big disappointment."

  • "The restaurant and bar are very nice -- the atmosphere is great. Bartender knows what he's doing -- my Manhattan was perfect. Dinner was absolutely delicious. It was disappointing to learn that in spite of being one of three tables of two when we arrived, that the kitchen was already out of one of their specials for the evening. Service was spotty at best, which was a bit of a shock since they were not busy at all. Bread was promised, but never delivered. Wine glasses were not refilled. No one came to check on us to see how the meal was going or see if we needed anything."

  • "Not too vegetarian friendly. If I had a nickle for everytime I heard "we have a salad" or "we could make a steamed vegetable plate," I could buy the Brooklyn Bridge. Both my wife and I had rumbling stomaches all night--she had steak and I had a salad with garbanzos (after the server said "we don't have anything with beans.") Good pour on the drinks."

  • "Tried the brunch on a Sunday. It was the first ever offering of the brunch menu - $32 Prix fixe of 3 courses, including an alcoholic beverage and unlimited coffee/tea/juice/soda! Portions were very generous. Not the most unusual menu items, but they were fresh and delicious. The waffle sundae was especially delightful- the waffle was perfect! Service was great - servers were just attentive enough and the pace of the courses was just right to allow you to enjoy the generous portions. The grounds of the Tarrytown Estate are beautiful to stroll around after dining. I recommend highly recommend the brunch. Will definitely go back to try the dinner menu. And again for brunch, if they continue to offer it."

  • "The local area & attractions brought us here - we enjoyed our delicious lunch and walked the beautiful grounds & explored the period building that housed the restaurant. We were greeted warmly, seated immediately and the staff was gracious and attentive. The meals were prepared as described with fresh ingredients."

  • "Appearance wise, the room resembles the typical high end motor lodge dining room. The food was far better than that, however. My wife's smoked pork chop was just excellent in all respects, and my dinner was very good too. Service was a bit inattentive....I think the waiter just had a bit too much to do that evening. But the thing that really detracted from the experience-aside from the young couple who made no effort to control their very loud and ill behaved child-was the sound system. The volume was much too loud for a dining room. I don't think it's my responsibility to ask to have the music turned down anymore than I should have to ask that the silverware be clean. Anyway - the food was very good."

  • "Very friendly and helpful staff. We found the menu to be limited but the salad that I had was nice. Did not like the maple butter that they serve with the bread. We've dined in other restaurants that are below stairs and liked them but for some reason - perhaps because it was a Monday night and quite empty the atmosphere did not appeal. Would possibly give it another try on a busier night."

  • "Took our son and his wife for anniversary. The menu listed tavern fare for sure but it was exceptionally prepared. The spinach was prepared to perfection ; the herbed French fries were incredible and the hanger steak was just right. Best part were the chocolate covered cheesecake lollipops!! True, it is expensive but for a special occasion is okay. The staff were more than helpful and attentive (we had a 4 month old with us.) This being said, it was a Very quiet night with no bar patrons or convention groups. I can see how it could get very noisy and crowded--but for us it was perfect!"

  • "My friend and I enjoyed a great meal at an interesting location. The property is very nice and different than what we expected. The Biddle Mansion was new to me. The food was great. If they could take the great food and the great property and place the restaurant somewhere other than underground, they would have a winner!"

  • "I've lived in Westchester nearly my whole life, and had no idea these beautiful grounds even existed. Absolutely gorgeous location, with historic buildings integrated very well into modern functions. The food at this restaurant was incredible. My wife ordered 2 small plates, while I had a steak, and everything was simply great. Awesome portion sizes combined with great flavors and generous sides. "

  • "My husband and I were visiting the area and found this place through an internet search. What a wonderful find! The setting in an old mansion on beautifully landscaped grounds which were lit at night was lovely. The cellar is cozy, quiet & charming divided into several rooms. The staff was very accommodating. We decided to share plates and had a delicious meal of crab cakes, generous salads and outstanding macaroni and cheese. We learned upon asking that the restaurant had only been open to the public for a few months. The history and photos on the walls were very interesting but I cannot say enough about the host and hostess , John and Michelle. They took an genuine interest in making out evening admirably and it certainly was."

  • "My husband and I truly enjoyed a wonderful anniversary dinner at Cellar 49! The setting was perfect for a romantic dinner for two and the service was impeccable. Our waiter Paul was very friendly and went out of his way to make sure all our needs were met. The dinner menu offered many choices...both our choices were quite good. At the end of our meal, Paul surprised us with chocolate dipped strawberries in honor of our anniversary! What a nice surprise!!!"

  • "I went to dinner here on a very slow evening. I ordered French onion soup and crab cakes. I was a bit disappointed that the onion soup was not more robustly seasoned. I thought it was a bit bland, but I do like full flavors especially in soups. But the crab cakes made up for it - delicious, with a great sauce. I look forward to going to this restaurant again."

  • "While the ambiance was nice, the menu is way overpriced...$16.00 for espresso with sambuca (which im glad my husband and I didnt order doubles) is not something Im looking to pay for. Im glad we tried it, but it is not a place we would go back to."

  • "I recently dined at Cellar 49 with my family and could not have been more thrilled with the experience. From the wonderful bartender (had a phenomenal pineapple martini at the bar before dinner), to the delightful dining room staff, we were greeted with warmth and smiles, and treated like family. The food was cooked to perfection. To say my family and I enjoyed a blissful food coma is an understatement. Eagerly anticipating our next visit!!"

  • "I live in the area and this was my first time at Cellar 49. I thought the service and food were great. Arrive before sunset for a spectacular view of the sunset before heading down to the dark cellar. I would go again."

  • "We went in to try out a new place. Located in the wine cellar of the historic tarryhouse mansion this restaurant has a great feel. Small and intimate with a persistent fire in the corner of the dinning room makes for a very romantic environment. Food was great and everything is made on site. Homemade ketchup and pickles!! Liver pate was a very generous portion as were the pretzel bread. Staff was very friendly and made you feel like you were eating with friends. Will defiantly be going back"

  • "Everything was great. Our waiter Paul could not have been more polite and helpful. The poutine appetizer was off the charts and I am still thinking about my dry-aged steak. Would go there again in a heartbeat and recommend to anyone I know."

  • "My husband and I went to cellar 49 Saturday night for our belated valentines day celebration. We have a 1yr old son so getting out alone is not a regular event for us. Cellar 49 was a perfect night out, we had reservations and we were seated right next to the fireplace. Before sitting at our table we had a drink at the bar, the bartender was so personable and made us feel right at home. Paul was our server in the restaurant and he couldn't have been kinder and more attentive. We had a wonderful night out and look forward to doing it again -maybe in the summer so we can take advantage of the outdoor areas. We would recommend this to friends and family looking for an escape for dinner or the night."

  • "GF and I were staying in Tarrytown on business and found this spot, where she went as a kid. The cellar is truly a cellar and the estate is truly an estate. It's certainly a different experience just finding the restaurant and where to park on a cold, snowy night, but the intimate dining room beside the working fireplace was wonderful. The flatbread was excellent, stuffed chicken very good, and salads above average. I'd recommend!"

  • "My husband and I love to find wonderful restaurants to enjoy and we certainly did with Cellar 49! We were celebrating our daughters' 30th birthday and were a party of six. Everyone, from the hostess to the maitre d to the servers were both warm and professional. The atmosphere was a delight! We were there on Valentine's weekend so there was a special menu with a pre-selected wine chosen for each course. They were paired perfectly! The food was absolutely wonderful and the special birthday plate of chocolate dipped strawberries was delectable! We all left with a smile on our faces and a promise to come back."

  • "Everything was fantastic, the courses were unique and the wine pairings were just perfect. My only suggestion, the background music was not on the same level as everything else- classical, such as Beethoven would have elevated the experience. We had a fabulous evening !"

  • "From the moment we walked in, we felt welcomed. Our server, Paul was vibrant but not too chatty, he was helpful but not pushy, and since I was the one requesting the wine, he poured it for me to taste instead of my husband. (I have dined in 5 star locations and have never been given that opportunity). Cellar 49 is not a very large place, maybe only 15 tables, but the low lighting and the fireplace allow for a relaxed dining experience. My husband and I enjoyed a meal that included both comfort food and something a little more extravagant. This is not to be missed. The wine menu is wonderful, by the way."

  • "Exclent food and service - but need to work on ambience.Warm cozy inn setting but only a couple of tables had clear view of fire and relied on overflow music from bar (vs own jazz or classical which would have been much more appropriate. Also had poor signage indicating where to park along with difficult walk from lot (dark and icy)."
