Diner Reviews
  • "My Dad's 75th birthday was extra special because of Ceiba!"

  • "Great menu! Extensive and filled with unusual creations. It was hard to decide what to order. We had several different appetizers. Each was fantastic. For the entree I ordered skewered sugar cane shrimp, so called because the skewer is actually a slice of sugar cane. Wonderful deserts as well. Very helpful and friendly service too. Guess we'll just have to go back to try more dishes."

  • "We were disappointed in the food. The spices just seemed off. The menu selections look wonderful and we were planning on all the food we anticipated to eat. When you're kids and husband say "your make this dish better at home" you know the the food is just so-so. Too bad the menu has del promise."

  • "Great, great idea from Chef Matt. Well prepared, flavorful, went well with grilled romaine and red onions. He continues to be so innovative and creative."

  • "We had a great lunch and new experience with Latin food. It had a little kick, but very nice."

  • "Nice to find food that isn't the same old menu. South American cuisine was such a nice change, and it was very good. More than that the ambience was hip, and the tables are spaced far enough so you aren't listening to everyone's conversations. The wine list is enormous, and the food was great. The waiter was nice, but a bit immature. He said "dude" at one point, and was trying a bit to hard to be casual and witty. Other than that the experience was great. I look forward to going back."

  • "We ate here after seeing a show at the Warner Theater. Ceiba has pre and post specials at the bar that provide a great place to grab a nibble and drinks."

  • "What an amazing dinner experience! Our waiter Joe provided top notch service to include excellent recommendations for appetizers and main course. The halibut and shrimp ceviches are amazing. Each person in our party ordered a different main course and every dish was filled with flavor and truly amazing!"

  • "My friend had what he said was an excellent pork shank and we shared fantastic cumin carrot salad. Very unusual and terrific. I'd return."

  • "It's been a year since we last visited Ceiba, and this return visit confirmed our initial impression that the food is good here, if not expensive, but the entire dining experience is not particularly special. The hostess was not that friendly or attentive at the door. The waiter provided very good service, but the food server oddly brought on our evidently quite hot plates without first removing the existing plates in front of us. So, as he stood over us looking like he was about to drop our hot entrees, he signaled that we should remove our own plates to allow him to put the plates down. That seemed like poor training. My shrimp on a sugar cane was pretty good, but the saffron rice we ordered on the side was undercooked."

  • "We had a great time for our dinner before going out on the town. The wait staff was very helpful and our server was extremely accommodating. The food was delicious, however some of the party were disappointed by the cocktails. Overall it was a very nice start to our evening."

  • "Shared a paella and it was the best I've experienced since a trip to Spain. Excellent menu, solid service, a great place to dine."

  • "We ate at Ceiba for lunch. I had been there a number of times, and was looking forward to good food, though in a VERY loud restaurant. Ceiba met expectations on these 2 fronts. However, the front end staff was rude at best. We arrived 5 minutes before the dining room officially opened, and were gruffly directed to wait in the lobby with no explanation. We were eventually at at what IMO was the worst table in the room - small, dark, and shoved against a wall. When we asked to be seated at one of ~20 2-person tables along the walls (pointing to the tables), the hostess nodded and then acted as though she hadn't heard us, instead seating us in the middle of the restaurant (think especially loud). Needless to say, I will not be back."

  • "I love ceiba :) Hard to find an up class restaurant in dc with good food , I've been coming here for 6 years now and I'll keep coming back , check out the happy hr drinks menu at the bar and very affordable pre-theatre menu without waiting for dc restaurant week ."

  • "I've eaten at Ceiba for years and recently had lunch there. I ordered the gnoochi and it was terrible. The actual gnoochi was a bit chewy and the vegetables were over cooked. The overall dish wasn't flavorful at all. A real disappointment."

  • "Fantastic table service. Delicious seafood. Octopus salad was great. Only complaint was host stand. Restaurant was near empty and they wanted to seat us in the lounge... Bizarre. Strange, casual bench and chair setup. Totally accommodated our request to love but was very unusual. Didn't get sense that host stand was managing things very well."

  • "Three of us dined at Ceiba Saturday night and once again found that everything on their menu is incredibly delicious. We had ceviche, tuna tartar taquitos and guacamole as appetizers...all great, especially the taquitos! We followed with soup and salad, and while we all agreed that everything was good, the spicy tortilla soup is a MUST HAVE dish when you eat there. It was amazingly good. Dinners included chicken tamales and beef ribeye churrasco. While the steak was flavorful, it was so full of gristle that it was difficult to cut. I would probably avoid that dish next time around. But overall, a great experience and we will definitely return."

  • "I dine Ceiba several times a year and the place never fails. It offers a delicious, interesting modern takes on traditional Latin Amercan dishes. The whole menu is good, including the daily specials. The service is very friendly and attentive. and the prices are reasonable for the quality of the food and the downtown location. It also offers half price appetizers at Happy Hour, which is 3-6pm, and thus an option for a very late lunch. The ambience is nice. A slight negative is that the decor could use some refreshing; it's a bit worn here and there, but only if you look carefully. I'd recommend Ceiba if you're nearby and looking for a pleasant and somewhat unusual meal."

  • "My boyfriend and I were very impressed with the place. We ordered the sampler of ceviche; it was great because it ranged from mild to spicy. The chips that also went along were tasty and different - you can tell they are not store bought. We ordered the Seafood paella for two. That was the most amazing part of the dinner. The seafood was exquisitely fresh, and the spices of the rice were excellent. We were more than thrilled with the entree, as it was a very fair price. They did not rip us off either because there was a lot of seafood to rice. A bad restaurant would give much more rice than seafood, so we were absolutely impressed. The Salvadorian creme dessert was ok. Perhaps it's because we took the dessert to go so it wasn't fresh nxtday"

  • "Restaurant has an outstanding menu. We had the Black Bean soup appetizer and it was the best we've ever had. The Swordfish entree was outstanding. The waiter was attentive, helpful and very knowledgeable. Wonderful overall experience. This was our first visit to DC and we would recommend this restaurant highly."

  • "Appetizers, esp. the ceviche platter have been a great introduction into a delightful evening which continued with wonderful seafood specials, a no regret visit"

  • "Ceiba was yum! They accommodated my boyfriend and I when we walked in at 10:15 knowing their kitchen closes at 10:30. The host was most helpful and sincere in making our dining experience pleasant. We ordered the paella for two and loved it! We'll be back for more ! "

  • "Ceiba could use a rethink on the menu, and the bartenders shouldn't be so stingy. Good though. If you haven't been before, I recommend it."

  • "Great place for a special occasion. Quiet enough so everyone could hear each other. Varied menu with a tasty flair even if you might have a picky eater in your group. Tortilla soup was flavorful without too much spice. Pork shank was too much to eat for me but would have been great in a doggy bag for home. Cocktails were very refreshing but watch the happy hour prices as they did not apply to our dining area. Good value compare to other restaurants in the area."

  • "Have been eating at Ceiba regularly for five years. It's essentially my cafeteria. I am constantly impressed by Chef Matt Britt's constant innovation and high quality cuisine. He makes meals that I haven't tasted since my travels in S. America 25 years ago. I love his soups and stews. He even made me, a tofu hater, an amazing tofu dish, in which I didn't even recognize it being tofu. We're truly blessed to have someone like Matt making great Caribbean food for us in DC."

  • "We were a large group with small children and I was impressed with the service and how they adapted, offering some plainer fare for the kids. That turned out to be really important, since several dishes were excessively spicy. Generally, I like spicy food, but the tuna ceviche was so hot that none of the flavor of the mango and jicama which attracted me to the dish could penetrate. Apparently the gaspacho was also spicy, although the lump crab was a nice touch. The mains were better; the grilled shrimp with pineapple was very tasty, and the branzino my mom had was outstanding. Another miss was the cocktail: the Hemingway mojito was undrinkably sweet -- too much guarapo, pressed sugar cane juice. But they did remake it for us."

  • "I've been to Ceiba at many times, just never wrote a review until now. I've been there for birthdays, date nights, family dinners, girlfriends only nights, etc. The food is to die for! Everything we've ever ordered was amazing. My favorite dish is the seafood stew! And the little dipping sauce they give you with the "bread stick/chips" is very yummy. The service is consistently good, but I come back for the food!"

  • "The service was excellent, we requested a table change and they were very helpful. Our server Jacob (i think) was very attentive and even the busboys were friendly. The drinks were very good but I would say the food was okey. The mofongo was not what a mofongo is supposed to be(coming from a Puerto Rican). The tres leches on the other hand was on point! I would recommend this place. "

  • "Too little portions, it's almost ridiculous. I ordered sea bass ceviche as main course, it was delicious but looked extremely small portion, by the way, I'm not a big eater. "

  • "Excellent bar area, the restaurant is larger than it looks from the outside, the restaurant has nice deals for a discounted full dinner during the week. We started off with SPICY LAMB FLAUTAS then had the CHICKEN TAMALES roasted chicken breast, confit, fava beans, huitlacoche, sweet corn puree a side of grilled asparagus with spicy hollandaise top that off with desert wife had TRADITIONAL FLAN honey-tequila oranges and I had COCONUT TRES LECHES CAKE island fruit compote, coconut meringue mousse. All was excellent we were full but not over full. We look forward to going back."
