Five for dinner on a Tuesday night at 6pm. Not at all crowded. In a basement which has been well decorated in an outdoor motif. We ordered cocktails immediately. Unfortunately they arrived after the appetizers and just before the entrees were served. The waiter told us twice the drinks were on the way. This was particularly odd as the place had only several guests. Appetizers were very good but portions were small. Warm Wild Mushroom and Goat Cheese Salad was good.Roasted Diver Scallops spaghetti squash, butternut squash ribbons and puree was tasty but only two scallops for $16. Main courses were good: wild boar, lamb; swordfish; venison and duck. Each was well prepared and interesting but again portions were small. Close to Shakespeare Theater and they discount parking at PMI.

Decided to come here for brunch with a party of 6 at the suggestion of a friend visiting from out of town who wanted to try something different. I had often bypassed the restaurant in the past, but never thought to consider it. The food was great, decent portions and filling with a complimentary side dish. The Bloody Mary was to die for, as were the game sausages (or waitress offered all five). Everyone raved about the corn beef hash and the oysters were cooked to perfection. They were very accommodating, even seating our group in the private dining area away from the rest of restaurant. The waitress was very understanding and knowledgeable, just genuine and friendly, which is hard to come by these days in the area. I want to and will come back for dinner next time.

Although Cedar has been in opened for 5 years, we just found it now. This gem has been hidden from us, down numerous stairs, only 2 blocks from the Shakespeare Theater. They have an excellent $35 pre-theater menu, but we had to skip it to try a number of interesting choices on the regular menu that were so tempting. The food was excellent and the restaurant was wonderfully accommodating about splitting two different appetizers we ordered between our two plates so that it looked as if the combination was meant to be that way. We went on to split an entrée and a dessert with coffee and left pleasantly full, asking ourselves why we hadn't found this restaurant before!

This restaurant is conveniently located for Ford's Theatre and so many DC sights. The outside is not imposing but surprise! You walk downstairs to the restaurant which was very quiet and pleasant on a Monday noontime. We didn't want large meals, so we had an excellent chestnut bisque soup and ocean scallops for appetizers--delicious both. I love sccallops and these were cooked quite nicely. I had the lamb sandwich on focaccia with an au jus dip that made it quite nice. the fried oyster sandwich was different and really needed the sauerkraut to pick up the flavor. We shared the banana cheesecake which is really banana and cheesecake wrapped in a fried wrapper with ice cream on top--quite good. Service was excellent.

Pre-theater menu has great options for a great price. Portions are perfect and do not force you to over eat. Angus beef filets were cooked perfectly to the temperature I requested. They also have my favorite celebratory drink, the Stratosphere (creme de violette and champagne). I had the wild boar my very first dining experience at Cedar, and that was also superb. Service from all staff is very pleasant.

Our visit to Cedar for lunch was a big success! I'd eaten there with another lunch bunch and our foursome decided to try it. Everyone was impressed by the calm attractive setting, the excellent service we received, and the well-prepared meals we were served. A very nice wine accompanied the Cobb and steak salads, along with good crusty bread and followed by French pressed coffee and a lovely Tres Leches cake with a vibrant passion fruit sorbet. Prices were reasonable and the atmosphere was not rushed.

Hosted my birthday brunch here with a group of 11. Offered a range of delicious breakfast options (Banana Nut Crunch French Toast, Wild Game Sausage and Eggs, Hangtown Fry), fantastic lunch options ("Chicken and Waffles," Fried Oyster Sandwich, Braised Pork Belly BLT) and yummy cocktails. Several different types of sausage were offered, such as venison and rabbit. They placed dividers around our table to create more privacy and a really nice environment. It was quiet, and very easy to have conversations among the whole table. The service was phenomenal! Would definitely recommend Cedar for a group function.

Cedar offers a pre fixe dinner for those dining prior to concert or theater event which the four of us took advantage of. $35 for 3 courses. Everyone in our group was more than happy with their meals and the way the way the food was prepared. Every dish was presented well and prepared the way we requested. The pre fixe menu offers something for everyone and are items off of the regular menu. Portions were nice size. We were seated right away and the servers were very friendly and knowledgeable. The restaurant filled up quickly even at the early hour of the evening due to the concert close by. This did slow service down somewhat near the end. They say plan for an hour prior to a show - it was closer to an hour and 45 mins.

I booked a table for lunch because the restaurant was described as particularly good for vegetarians. Put simply, that is absolutely wrong. It is mis-selling itself on OpenTable. The menu was fine for my meat-eating friend but it had exactly one vegetarian entrée. We could have gone to any downtown restaurant and had a better choice.

The food was excellent- passion fruit mimosas were a big hit and my banana bread french toast was so good. A friend wasn't totally in love with her pork belly BLT but that was the only thing that wasn't excellent. We had a reservation for 12:30pm for brunch and it wasn't too crowded, nice and quiet so it would be a good place for a date night!

We ate here before a performance at the near-by Sydney Harmon Hall. The ambiance was lovely, the food very good, and the noise level such that we could actually carry on a conversation. The pre-theater menu offered lovely choices and a good price. Unfortunately the service was slow -- it took 20 minutes to even place our order and longer to get our drink. We had to ask for bread. To its credit, management came over not only to apologize but to offer a more than reasonable compensation for the fact that we had to hurry through our meal to make the curtain. We will definitely go again and are eager to try some of their wild game offerings (which were not included in our pre-theater prix fixe dinner).

Too easily overlooked in the busy Penn Quarter food scene, this spot is doing a really good job in the kitchen and in the front of the room. The plates are inventive, well calibrated across the senses and tasty. Suggested wine pairings actually work to enhance the food. A great deal of thought has gone into this menu and it shows. Service is impeccable: friendly, responsive and well timed. The pre-theater deals are amazing. Check this one out.

The restaurant has a nice ambiance and the menu selections were really nice. My group of friends and I ran into a couple issues where the staff were able to help us out graciously. My sister had arrived from the airport and they offered to hold her luggage in the back (and it was heavy...). Then I knocked a drink all over the table and menu and me, and they were able to find us another table (they actually moved us to a private room). They were also able to accommodate for us to add 2 additional guests who didn't even show up anyway. I really appreciated the attentive service and the waitress made us feel welcome and at home. Thank you!

Loved our first visit to Cedar Restaurant. What a treat! We made reservations prior to our theatre evening at Woolly Mammoth. The ambiance was lovely, the service was professional, friendly, and helpful. Mostly, the food was exquisite. The chef has flair for combining flavors that bring out the vibrancy of the food. We chose from the pre-theatre menu. I had the Heirloom tomato appetizer, the mushroom tart entree, and the tres leche coconut cake (a MUST, moist and not too sweet). My husband had the mixed green salad with cashews, the filet (seasoned and cooked perfectly), and the homemade passion fruit and blackberry sorbet. The portions were just the right size. And, the topper was the reasonable price. We will definitely be back.

The food was really good and the setting was enjoyable. But the service was so-so. I had mentioned in my reservation that this meal was a special occasion (birthday) and neither of us diners had ever been to Cedar. But the restaurant made no effort to acknowledge the birthday. Indeed, we were never offered a dessert menu nor after-meal coffee. So the good parts of the experience were kind of tarnished by the lackluster attention to detail at the end.

I ordered the roasted beet salad and the lobster grilled cheese sandwich that came with tomato soup. The flavor of the salad was good, although, the lettuce didn't look very fresh (some of the greens had brown edges and some of the greens were wilted). The lobster had no flavor. It looked like imitation lobster. I just remember thinking this sandwich is too sweet. It must have been the sauce that was on the bread. I did like the tomato soup. Tomato soup I've eaten in the past has been a tad bit sweet. This soup was flavorful and did not taste sweet. I wished that they served you more than 1/2 cup of soup. The lobster grilled cheese sandwich was not worth $22.00

Remember the great lunch at Poste--- warm Parker House rolls--forget it; remember the great reasonable lunch specials, mix and match, combos, with little extras? forget them. All changed. dry bread, bizarre risotto, with odd flavored oil all over it; shrimp have mercifully survived the changes. Change is good if menu is better. But, sadly it is not. We went here with three adults (one of whom is a vegetarian) and one infant on a Saturday afternoon. We each ordered different entrees -- chicken & waffles, shrimp & grits and the beet salad -- and were all completely satisfied. We also enjoyed the French press coffee, and the desserts were absolutely delicious. We didn't have room for dessert, but couldn't resist. The service was incredible. They were attentive, professional, came over at the right moments. No one was bothered or put out by the infant who was making his "seagull screams" (that is happy screams for no other reason other than the delight of his own voice). I can't wait to go back, and would highly recommend this place.

We had never been before and a little apprehensive when we first walked in- the hostess leads you downstairs to the restaurant, which was smaller than we thought. They offer an amazing 3-course meal for $35 as a theater menu and we were blown away with the quality and flavors. I got the filet and my fiance got the veal both delicious.
