Cava is a small-plates restaurant whose eclectic cuisine showcases Chris McDonald's culinary depth, with an emphasis on Iberian and Latin American flavours.

With a "nose-to-tail" sensibility, and a long-term devotion to sustainable and ethical ingredients, Cava maintains it's reputation as a destination restaurant who balances responsibility with a memorable dining experience.

Designed to underscore the elemental relationship between food and wine, the simple, charming room has traditional table seating for 56 as well as a bar; which is designated for walk-ins on a first come first served basis.

Most recent accolades include Cava being ranked in the top 10 on Joanne Kates' Top 100 Restaurants of 2013.

A frequently changing menu offers inventive interpretations of familiar culinary themes with over 40 wines by the glass and over 200 different bottles to enhance the experience.

  • "Went there with 2 friends and they asked of we would like to choose from the menu or have the chef cook for us. They took into account allergies and food issues, and we threw caution to the wind and had the chef make the call. The food oh the food! So yummy! The knowledgable wine pairings with certain courses, spot on! You won't be disappointed! We will be back!"

  • "The food here is really very good. The best tapas restaurant I have ever been to. Delectable menu with a good selection of vegetable, seafood and a few meats. Not hard at all to feel replete after a meal. It is a smaller restaurant but well laid out. A bit stark (modern) in its decor but not necessarily cold as the there are lots or reds and oranges to warm up the concrete. The staff is very knowledgeable of the menu, the flavours and you get the sense that they love the food themselves. Pricing appears to be fair, but it really isn't hard to ring up a big bill. Two of us had 2 glasses of wine each, shared 5 tapas and a dessert and it was $200. "

  • "They had music playing when the noise level was already loud. We had to be asked to be moved away from the speakers. The restaurant is small and the tables are placed closely together. We measured the noise level and it was 85 dB (A scale) which can cause hearing loss with continued exposure. Food was great, very innovative and delicious ,creative and service was attentive but if you're over 60 it's not a good place for a meal with friends."

  • "I requested a quiet table and we were seated at, what we believe to be, the quietest table in a noisy restaurant; worked very well for us. Chris McDonald was sitting at the bar directly beside us came to our table and kindly and patiently explained many of the items on the menu. In the end, we chose "let us cook for you" and we were not disappointed. The last time we were at Cava, the different dishes came out fast and furious, too quickly to enjoy each one individually. This time, I asked that the meal be paced more slowly. While Chris was in the restaurant, that was the case. When he left, the dishes started arriving 3 at a time. Again, I requested that the meal be slowed down and it was. But I should not have needed to ask a second time."

  • "Stepping into Cava, you leave the hum drum walkway of the mall and enter a chic dining space. I was welcomed efficiently and our order taken in a timely manner. The wine was perfectly chilled but then we waited and waited and waited for the food. We got the 1st morsel 50 minutes after we were seated and this influenced our experience. Things improved after we complained and a discount was applied to our bill. The Brussels sprouts were delicious as was artichoke and mushroom salad. The beet and kale salad at the next table looked amazing and I'll try that next time."

  • "Three people, $350. Way too much. Dinner, one glass of wine and Jasmine tea. The food is mostly excellent. Churros were much better at Sassafraz. Other deserts not at the price level either. Ambience is just an average, the noice is unbelievable. We had to yell at each other for two hours. It almost ruined the dinner. Service is very good. For this money you need a whole package including a perfect ambience and more. Definitely not a place for a romantic dinner. I have been in lots of excellent restaurants in North America and have to say again, it is quite overpriced. JK"

  • "This is my third time at Cava, and every time we try something new, and have a few favourite dishes. This time, they were out of a number of things, or there were substitutions - the chorizo with manchego and squash had the chorizo replaced with Serrano ham (equally delicious), and the quince trifle was replaced with a chocolate trifle (also good, although I was looking forward to the quince.) They were also out of the Tokaji that one of my party ordered, and were out of one of the wines that we wanted to order, but the staff were very quick to tell us what was out of stock, or being substituted. The sablefish with black rice and cabbage is always the star of the show."

  • "Cava is still the best restaurant in Toronto! Menu is diverse to suit all tastes with an Iberian approach. Poached foie gras and Valdeon with sherry-roasted figs are fabulous to start. Papas fritas and the eggplant dish are legendary. Best sablefish (black cod) anywhere - so light and flavourful. Don't worry carnivores - 2 styles of jamon (ham) and beef steak that are so good they could convert a vegetarian! We were very lucky to have the dessert special - an extraordinary chocolate trifle with cherry sorbet, hope it becomes a regular on the menu! Great wine list including lots of really good Spanish wines and a very good selection of half-bottles (hard to find in TO these days) Service is outstanding-knowledgeable, efficient and charming!"

  • "Was not really overly impressed with the food...I found that the wait staff weren't particularly observant or attuned to first-time diners. (Took us half an hour to figure out the menu was wrapped around the napkin). Some of the flavours were really quite off - ranging from WAY over-spiced (i.e. anticucho) to the blandest 0f bland (i.e. the tamal). Was excited to try this out because we have a Latin background in our family - but not quite in love with the results."

  • "We celebrated our 10 anniversary (meeting) the other evening and I chose the restaurant because we love tapas size portions. We went in and our server asked us what we liked / disliked from a food standpoint and suggested we try the "trust menu" where she and the kitchen would serve us popular dishes. We were delighted with every plate that we were offered up. The wine list was exceptional and boasted some fantastic Spanish wines. This is a must try for any foodie who loves great flavours in their food paired with terrific wines."

  • "My husband and I recently came for the first time to celebrate our anniversary. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, the service was very attentive, friendly and professional. Kate was our server and she was amazing! Kate put together a fabulous 8 course tasting menu that featured everything we liked and we could tell she really listened to us as we loved the dishes she brought! We had the Beet and Kale salad, Gamay Poached Foie Gras, Jamon Iberico, Japanese Eggplant with Queso Fresco, Grilled Sea Scallops, Quinoa with Roast Vegetables and Spiced Marcona Almonds, Venison Anticucho and their 48 Hour Braised Brisket. They capped the menu off with complimentary sherry and an in house dessert. Cava - a definite pick for foodies!"

  • "This was the 2nd time we ate at Cava with same 2 friends and all of us loved the 8 plates that we shared. I do not recommend this restaurant to people who want large portions & low price. Its mostly small plates, but all of us agree its worth the price paid. I thought the most memorable plates were the Pincho of Gamay-Poached Foie Gras, Roast Brussels Sprouts, and Grilled Squid with Hazelnut Romesco, I would have requested a second order of each, but my dinner-mates wouldn't go for it. All of us loved the recommended Barolo Chinato “Vino Aromatizzato” La Canallese wine. My friend said it paired extremely well with his Churros Con Chocolate. The bar tenders topped off the night with their vast knowledge of wines & spirits, and great stories."

  • "3rd time here; food as delicious as we remembered. Foie gras / chicken liver pate outstanding. Service is friendly and efficient. One negative: the bottle of red wine was very cold (and no, we don't like warm red wine; this was really cold); hand warming glass-by-glass solved that (almost), and the wine itself was good value at $ 70. We will return!"

  • "Most of the menu at Cava remains unchanged - which is a good thing for regulars like us who have become addicted to the eggplant, sweetbreads, beef brisket, churros and other favourites! But Chef Chris McDonald is always inventing new dishes and in celebration of Robbie Burns Day this weekend added a delicious Spanish Haggis to the mix! Paired with an oloroso sherry and served with a smoky puréed rutabaga, it was the highlight of our dinner! An evening out at Cava never disappoints and often pleasantly surprises with a new offering, expertly executed!"

  • "It was one of the coldest nights of the year but it was so cold inside the restaurant that our evening was a little spoiled by that. The waiter said they were having a problem... really? go out and buy some space heaters then. Food was good, very small portions, yes I know it was tapas, but still, some of the smallest tapas portions I have ever seen. Prices a little high too. With tip, one bottle of wine, 4 craft beers and food was $375. We did not have dessert or coffee."
