Diner Reviews
  • "Haven't been in a while and I forgot how good this place can be - good Lord this place is loud though .. yikes. Octopus is fabulous and the meatballs (lamb and beef) are awesome. Calamari is decent. "

  • "Cava is great because it is different. It is not your typical bar food and drink menu. They have great Happy Hour specials on drinks and food. I have tried many items on the menu and have enjoyed them all. The food is also healthy or at least healthyish!"

  • "I've been happy every time I've eaten here. It's best to go when volume isn't too high, though. Food quality is better when they aren't churning it out."

  • "Try everything on the menu. Great for a date night or catching up with long-lost friends!"

  • "We've eaten at Cava Mezze in Capitol Hill many times, and it's always very good. The food is excellent, it's usually possible to get a last-minute reservation, and service is very good. The food choices are fabulous. We had the octopus, Brussels sprouts, crazy feta, rocket salad, and a couple other dishes, all excellent. The only thing we would not order again is the gnocchi. It was fine, but not as fabulous as the other dishes."

  • "My husband had been craving this type of food (mezze), so we were happy to find a location near where we were headed for Saturday night. The service and food were outstanding. We particularly liked the Crazy Feta and Lollipop Chicken. Amazing. We will definitely be back!"

  • "My wife and I had our rehearsal dinner here about a year ago and we love to come back whenever possible if we are around Eastern Market. Food is amazing, nice lively atmosphere, tasty mojitos and several tasty gluten free options which makes the place a winner for us. Would highly recommend for anything from a date to a large party."

  • "Loved the mezze and service, my first time here, and it was a first date so I am happy"

  • "Very casual. Food was delicious. Opted for sharing small plates - lamb sliders and fries were excellent and the crazy feta delish! They start by bringing warm pita with some olive oil and olives and some yummy dip. Service was Great!"

  • "If you love Brussels Sprouts, definitely try these. They are delightful."

  • "Visited Cava Mezze this Saturday evening for dinner, and was seated on their rooftop patio. Nice little view of 8th Street, although it was pretty chilly! Food and atmosphere are good, but definitely overpriced for the quantity. Likely will not be returning for dinner. Food - A good assortment of tapas, plenty of selection for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. For my boyfriend and I - We ordered grilled grilled meatballs, chicken souvlaki, hummus, brussels sprouts, and the flaming cheese (forgot the name). The cheese was WAY too salty, and everything else was good but not spectacular. With two beers and a glass of wine on that, our bill was around $75."

  • "My husband and I joined one of my friends for dinner upon his recommendation. We were looking for a dinner place with healthy options and a casual atmosphere. We were delighted to find that this restaurant serves its meals tapas style. All the dishes were delicious - among the highlights are lamb meatballs, beet salad, baby octopus, and tzatziki (great with the spicy red stuff that comes with the pita basket). This was our favorite eatery of the whole weekend, and we'll definitely come back when we return to D.C.!"

  • "Cava is one of my favorite restaurants. I typically bring any out-of-towners to Cava, and they all rave about it afterwards. This time, however, was not my best visit. Two of my friends ordered items that were not available on the date of our visit (steak and lollipop chicken, I believe). He offered a replacement for my friend's steak request which she enjoyed, and allowed the other friend some time to make a different selection (or so we thought). While others' tapas came out, he never came back to ask her for her new selection before the rest of us were finished. We could have been more persistent in asking, but she survived on Harissa, pita, and flaming cheese."

  • "Mezze menu has many wonderful dishes - service was great, with food delivered one or two at a time which made for a fun and interesting taste journey! Our table was in a dark spot, which isn't my favorite, but it was a small inconvenience compared to the overall great experience."

  • "Cava Mezze used to be excellent but was just there over the weekend and felt like its gone down hill. The food was just okay. The fried cheese was delicious as usual and so was the squash and lamb burger but everything else was kind of mediocre. I was disappointed because the last few times I'd been there I loved it. It was also freezing in the restaurant, so dark we had to use our phones to read the menu and it took quite a while to get a server assigned to us."

  • "I love this place! The food is great and service is fast and swift! The drinks are so yummy!"

  • "I took a girlfriend who is in town for a couple months to Cava "Oh you haven't been? We MUST go!" It didn't disappoint. The variety on the menu makes for a great "small plate experience" because if you're taking a risk, the plate isn't that big and if you love something, you order a 2nd. The dip tasting was brilliant to start with, just enough and you don't fill up on bread. Butternut squash pie and the spicy lamb sliders were the highlight! If you want a great date night, girls night, or unique experience, go to Cava, they never disappoint."

  • "Last year, my family and I shared a wonderful birthday dinner at Cava's Gaithersburg location. I loved it so much that I wanted to take my boyfriend there for his birthday this year. He lives in DC, so we decided to try the Cava on Capitol Hill. The food was outstanding and came quickly. The only constructive comment that I have is that I called in advance to ask if we could order a particular dessert and have a candle in it and the person that I spoke with said it wouldn't be a problem. When it came time to have dessert, this message hadn't been relayed to our server. I didn't want to ask in front of my boyfriend, so we went ahead and ordered dessert, no candle included. It's not a big deal, but I wanted to let the restaurant staff know."

  • "With a dazzling array of small plates you can achieve every brunchers dream: never having to choose between sweet and savory. For brunch Cava adds a whole slew of delicious small plates from Bananas Foster to a dreamy Nutella Waffle to a perfect portion of French Toast, AND you can order off their regular menu too. So many choices, so much deliciousness. Only downers are they won't seat you until your entire party arrives (I just hate that rule) and the service is generally not that great (not terrible, just so-so)."

  • "I visit the district 2 to 3 times each year, and for the last 3 years, Cava Mezze has been on our list of restaurants that we schedule for group dinners. The tapas style dining is great fun for groups, and the eclectic menu will have everyone excited about next dish. My personal favorite is the Saganaki, or "Flaming Goat Cheese" as our group took to calling it. Excellent destination."

  • "Had been meaning to go there for a while so I'm glad I tried it out, but probably would not go back. The food was fine - not great, not bad. The restaurant is very expensive considering the small portions you get. Food was a bit on the oily side. Service is good, though. The ambiance is good for a night out, would probably be good for a group (if you can get a table)."

  • "Great place especially on a weekend evening to relax and eat wonderful food. The food and drinks are so good. The bread and spread is so tasty. My friends and I especially love the lamp chops, scallops and risotto, lamp meat balls and the fries with greek yogurt - everything we've eaten is sooooo good!!!"

  • "This is the best Greek food I've ever had. It's good to go in a group so that you can taste many dishes."

  • "The food is ok and while I understand small portions, this was just too little. Depth of flavor was shallow for most dishes. Won't be returning"

  • "This is a favorite place fort boyfriend and I. We were celebrating his birthday and was not disappointed. The food was great, we didn't have to wait long, although we were late for our reservation and we were able to longer over dessert and wine without interruption."

  • "They have an excellent brunch menu. The food was fantastic. Highly recommend."

  • "My two girlfriends and I had a fantastic night eating and dining away without being bothered to leave for the extra time we spent. Very down to earth servers who helped out greatly."

  • "We opted for this out of other options in the DC area and were so glad we did. I took my wife, sister, and 2 y/o daughter during a recent overnight stint in DC. The atmosphere was loud with music and ambient conversation, which was perfect for us. We try to avoid intimate, quiet places with our toddler, and she loved dancing to the music playing overhead. But it wasn't so loud that we couldn't converse at the table. From looking online we didn't have any indication it wouldn't be kid-friendly, but were surprised at how kid-friendly it actually was. There were a few other families with young children there along with us, mixed in with the Chelsea Market area 20-somethings and other older couples as well. Everyone working there was great!"

  • "For mezze, I usually go to Zaytinya and love the Jose Andres approach, but I needed to find a good, light, quick meal between Eastern Market and Union Station. Cava Mezze was a fantastic choice. All of the food choices we made were really delicious, the service was great, especially considering that we informed the server we needed to be out the door in less than an hour and we had to avoid certain nuts. A group of 5 ate very well. Only issue was that it was just a little too noisy for me but not for the rest of my party."

  • "Attended for a Sunday brunch with a group of 4 & 2 infants. I RSVPd and upon arrival one person in our party had not arrived yet. We were forced to stand and wait with an infant in a carrier until the last person arrived, even though the table was ready with the chairs set up for the infants. There was a lot of traffic going back and forth in front of the hostess station which made this very inconvenient for not only the 3 of us and child, but also for the staff. This went on for about 15min while the last in our party was trying to find parking. I know restaurants have their rules and want to protect against no shows, but sometimes discretion is called for especially when small children are involved. So I felt this was very rude."

  • "Hands down, the most delicious Greek restaurant I've visited. The meals are meant to be shared, so it's very easy for the price to add up, but this joint is definitely worth a visit if you enjoy anything Greek."

  • "Cava is great. We over-ordered, but mea culpa on that one. The good is always amazing. The flaming cheese is delicious. And, at $28/bottle, the house white is a fantastic deal, and is really lovely. Would also recommend the cauliflower and baby octopus. But honestly, have never had a bad meal there, or even a bad plate. Service was great, too, and we were seated upstairs--if you can request this, it is much better than the cave like and loud downstairs."

  • "The restaurant is a nice place to take a date, if you're not incredibly hungry. The food was good, but the portions are small. Be prepared to order several dishes. The food was good, but not great. The wild card for me was the draft selections. There were several beers on tap that I liked. I found the atmosphere perfect for a date. The lighting was low, but bright enough to see your date across the table."
    Dined on 3/12/2014
  • "The food was okay, not as good as many of the reviews I read. The service was poor. I felt we were a bother to our server, who acted somewhat annoyed every time we ordered!"
    Dined on 3/12/2014
  • "We were seated right away which was nices as the restaurant waa crowded. The noise level though was dramatic causing us to talk lodly to each other making it impossible to have a personal conversation. Love the food. Wine was a bargain, too."

  • "Really delicious, fun to eat foods. Small plates, reasonable portion sizes for small plates. Only drawback was heavy on the salt and the falafel were not that great. Gyro's were spectacular, as were the zucchini fritters, lamb meatballs and sautéed mushrooms. Highly recommend."
    Dined on 3/10/2014
  • "Visited on Saturday evening about 7PM. The food was great. It was so loud I could not converse with the person across my table. The options allowed for my answers in this survey are limited to only complimentary ones. I will not visit this place again and will most likely not use this service for making reservations. I had read the comments prior to visiting; there was no indication that this place was like dining in the middle of a crowded dance floor."

  • "Enjoyed a relaxing lunch of falafel fritters and a pork gryo. Excellent. Accompanied by a vodka on the rocks with club soda and a twist. A bit strong on the vodka but nothing to complain about."
