A word from Catherine Lombardi
Catherine Lombardi was the grandmother of owner Mark Pascal. Pascal, part owner of Stage Left Restaurant, brings his signature obsession with quality local ingredients to the cuisine of his youth. Catherine Lombardi's family came to Brooklyn from Naples. Her cooking was Neapolitan-based and heavily Brooklyn-influenced. It brought her whole extended family together every Sunday. Come taste why.

Cited Best New Restaurant and Best Italian Restaurant by NJ Monthly Readers’ Choice Poll, the red sauce is largely made from tomatoes the restaurant staff picks locally. To-order mozzarella, pressed eggplant rollatini, great pasta and a veal chop to die for are highlights.

Hand-made fresh juice cocktails are featured at the cocktail bar overlooking revitalized downtown New Brunswick. 21 new windows overlook downtown, offering a dramatic bird's-eye-view of The New Brunswick Theater District. It is a crown jewel in New Brunswick's thriving redevelopment.

Diner Reviews
  • "We started with the very garlic bread, which was a generous portion and true to its name and incredibly delicious. Though garlicky it did not have a lingering garlic aftertaste, which we all appreciated. The stuffed calamari with red sauce was really flavorful. Luckily there was some extra garlic bread to lap up the sauce. For dinner the lasagne in meat gravy was great tasting, but the scallops were salty and not the freshest. Yet the accompanying broccoli rabe was well prepared and quite good. We ended the meal with the cannoli special, which was heavenly. In fact, it was one of the best cannolis we have ever encountered."

  • "Catherine Lombardi's was a great find for dinner prior to an event at the State Theatre. Service was terrific and the food was very good. The waitress was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and specials."

  • "We had dinner on July 19 2014. Food was very good (especially the appetizers get the very-garlic bread OMG), atmosphere was kind of a retro vibe which was cool. Service seemed to be a little uneven at times (some things came fast, others a little slow) but that would not deter us from returning. A great place to dine particularly if you're going to see a show at State Theatre or George Street Playhouse! Highly recommend!"

  • " We arrived at the bar and were greeted by the most friendliest, knowledgeable staff ever! They were all truly delightful. Our party was seated promptly. Our server had a "I'm better than you " attitude. She was, however, courteous, but didn't smile and didn't appear she wanted to attend to us. She was very knowledgeable about: the food, the region of truffle and wine etc... other than that she wasn't anything special. The other wait staff was very accomodating and pleasant. Our food was bland and lukewarm at best. My mom did enjoy her lasagna which was hot !My shrimp was over cooked, pasta tasteless other than the salt. The staff did ask how are meals were, but honestly it was too late to get into things. We didn't order dessert and left."

  • "We had a graduation celebratory dinner with kids and adults, foodies and "less-foodies". Food and service were outstanding. Everyone was extremely happy. Gracious staff, excellent pasta, eggplant parm, and swordfish. The garlic bread was a huge hit, as well."

  • "Craft cocktails are heavenly and the Belgian Ales on the menu are rarely found in NJ. Apps, eggplant parm and zabaglione were all great. Love coming to Stage Left and Catherine Lombardi. The service is unparalleled."

  • "The food is wonderful and the service is even better."

  • "Friend and I went for dinner during Restaurant Week. Not only was the food wonderful but what a bargain. Three courses for $35 which allowed us to splurge on fancy drinks. The lobster bisque was fantastic- one of the best I have had. It was a perfect size portion and flavorful without being overly rich. The eggplant and spinach was delicious. Finally the zabaglione with fresh berries was the perfect way to end the meal."

  • "Always a wonderful restaurant to eat at. The food and service is above all"

  • "Very nice decor and great atmosphere. Service was disorganized, very uneven, yet attentive and apologetic. Appetizers were solid. The salad course arrived and we realized after the server walked away that our salads were missing most of their ingredients. There was a 15 minute delay till the replacement salads arrived. The replacement salads were correct and delicious. When our entrees arrived they were lukewarm at best and seemed like they had been sitting for awhile. They would have been much better served fresh and hot. We did not send them back since we did not want another long delay. Desserts were excellent and the highlight of the meal. Not sure if the mis-steps were because of being midweek or if staff is new and inexperienced."

  • "One of very few restaurants anywhere featuring southern Italian cuisine where my Italian-American wife will eat the red sauce !"

  • "Great food, awesome cocktails and wine list. Attentive service. Very nice dining room and ambiance. A tad noisy but not terrible. Veal porterhouse and veal scallopini were outstanding. The black spaghetti was good, not great. Not our first time here, and we will definitely return"

  • "Very limited menu that is not traditional "American Italian" as advertised. Not willing to amend / change menu to assist with tastes of customers. Too any other good restaurants in New Brunswickvv"

  • "Every time I go to Catherine Lombardi I am reminded that it is the best food in New Brunswick. The service is perfect (helpful, near by when you need them, and informed). The foot is out of this word and the wine is always delicious. It is the perfect spot for a special occasion. I will continue to make this a regular spot of mine and everyone should know about this place."

  • "Been the Catherine Lombardi many times before concerts and spaecial events. We've never been disappointed and plan to return soon."

  • "Catherine Lombardi's rivals many of the best restaurants in Manhattan, London, or LA. Our evening was a family get together, and it was relaxing and not rushed, the food was superb, and the service formal and friendly. This is a very expensive restaurant and only we dine there on special occasions (party of four with a reasonable wine will exceed $100 PP) but it is well worth it. Don't miss the antipasto selections (we enjoyed six small plates, and especially liked white anchovies and house made Capanato). Pasta dishes included crab/lobster stuffed ravioli, wild boar ravioli, and pappardelle with black truffles. Their pasta is house made and has the perfect chew. A not to miss is the veal porterhouse which is always is outstanding."

  • "We have eaten at Catherine Lombardi's before, and always found the food delicious if pricey. We took our teenage son to dinner as a treat before seeing a show. The restaurant was very busy, but there seemed to be plenty of staff wandering around. That said, we were seated next to the kitchen entrance (even though other tables were available) and then pretty much forgotten, except, on occasion, by the manager who seemed to take pity on us. Frankly, we very much felt like second class citizens because we weren't regulars... As for the food, it was fine, although my eggplant parmigiana had clearly sat waiting for my son's dish (seafood di viala), which was steaming hot. Drinks were also OK - my cosmo had also sat around."

  • "This was our third time at Cathrine Lombardi's and it is always constantly good. The pasta's are like grandma used to make and the appetizers are to die for. Our only concern was that the noise level in the restaurant was a bit on the high side but beyond that, everything was superb. It is a great place to dine before catching a show at the New Jersey State Theatre. If you have leftovers, they will even hold them until after the show when you can pick them up and stop in for some dessert or a nightcap. A great concept! We will be back!"

  • "We have gone to Lombardi's a lot. The food is very good, when they have it available. They seem to run out of things quickly. We got there at 7:30 and one special was gone and another needed substitutions. This happens every time we go there. The other issue is the noise level. The acoustics are VERY bad. It is hard to have a conversation. "

  • "The dinner was wonderful, but the service was very slow. We told them we were going to an 8:00 PM show 2 doors down. We arrived @ 6:00 PM and walked out @ 7:55 PM. The other problem, 2 for 2 the desserts were not what was listed. The taste was ok, but that's not what we ordered. A rum crème brulee, that had no rum flavor. A chocolate hazelnut bread pudding, no chocolate or hazelnuts ( told by the waitress big chocolate bits & great rum flavor). We didn't eat them, alerted the waitress and nothing was done for us. I think when you have just spent over $100 on a meal, they should have deducted the desserts. "

  • "The restaurant has a lot going for it EXCEPT the food! Nice atmosphere, good little bar overlooking downtown New Brunswick, decent ambiance for dining. But the food is less then average and quite expensive. Our meals were overcooked (pasta and seafood). I'll only go there for a drink in the future and dine elsewhere. Too bad they don't even notice how lousy the food is and how it will be their undoing."

  • "We go to The George Street Playhouse fairly often and always have been dissatisfied with our choice of eateries. I do not know why it took us so long to try Catherine Lombardi. No question about it- if we are in New Brunswick-that will be our restaurant of choice. "

  • "We have eaten at this restaurant 5 or 6 times. We have never been disappointed. The people who work there are very pleasant and wish to please their guests. A very enjoyable experience."

  • "We reserved Catherine Lombardi for my daughter's college graduation celebration. There were 10 of us and they gave us a large round table so we could talk to each other and with a view looking out on George Street. The food was terrific, service was great and the drinks were amazing. We all loved it and would recommend this to anyone looking to celebrate a special occasion in New Brunswick! "

  • "Excellent food and service. Staff was very friendly and helpful. I have food allergies and they were very accommodating, and made sure I did not get anything that would be a problem. They also were very helpful with any questions. Prices are a bit high, especially on the extensive wine list, but well worth it. "

  • "We had great service. In fact it was noticed that we toasted our friend "happy birthday". After enjoying a nice dinner and ordering coffee, a plate of wonderful cookies was delivered to our table with a chocolate HAPPY BIRTHDAY written on the rim. We thought this was such a nice gesture ( these were not ordered)until a charge for this platter was included on our check. Because we were rushed to get to George Street Theater, my husband did not make mention of this charge. A bit disappointing for that reason only!!!!"

  • "Deliciously prepared food coupled with fantastic service makes this restaurant a must go to in New Brunswick. The cozy decor makes this a great spot for a romantic dinner or an evening out with friends. The head bartender is a talented mixologist that has created an extensive cocktail selection that is second to none. Lastly, the chef prepared every dish to perfection and the variety of flavors accompanying each bite of food made this dining experience a true pleasure. "

  • "Catherine Lombardi's is a very well run, friendly Italian restaurant where the food is delicious, the drinks excellent and the serving staff makes you feel like they are enjoying serving you. Its location is perfect for pre-theater and it has valet parking privileges with the hotel across the road. I recommend this restaurant and look forward to dining there again."

  • "This is now probably my favorite Italian restaurant. The food was incredible and we didn't even leave room for dessert. The owner, Mark Pascal, came over to the table and made us feel very welcome. The Apps were out of this world. From garlic bread to Jamon Iberica to Seafood Salad, the apps were out of this world. Everyone at the table also raved about their entrees. It is definitely pricey but well worth it."

  • "Dinner on 4/15/14 was again excellent. We usually go to Catherine Lombardi before attending the State Theater shows in New Brunswick NJ The food and service are top notch--and the walk to the theater is only a couple of minutes. Great food, great shows - What more can I say !!!"

  • "This was our first time here. We loved the ambiance (although a bit noisy), the food and most especially, the service. We highly recommend this restaurant and are planning a second visit soon. Tip: if you have tickets you need to pick up for a show at one of the theaters next door, call ahead and they will have them waiting for you when you arrive for dinner."

  • "I was part of a party of 6. We were an hour early. The Maitre'd paniced a bit, but seated us within 30 minutes. 5 of the six were delighted with their meals. I had a Pork Chop stuffed with sausage. I t was mouth watering delicious. The only complaint came from a friend that ordered the Shrimp Scampi. She said it was too lemony for Scampi. We ordered 5 Soups, 1 Salad, 1 Round of Drinks which were assorted house wines, 6 Entrees and 6 desserts, 1 was Crème Brulee and the remaining 5 were Sorbet or Ice Cream. The Bill was $400 including a tip which was automatically added to our bill. This restaurant was good for a very special occasion. The Server was Very good. I think that its pricey because of its proximity to The State Theatre."

  • "It says it is Italian food -- which we love. But this was nothing special. And both food and wine were very over-priced for what we received. The food was decent but bland. We have had much better food (at similar prices) at other restaurants in the immediate locale. The only thing to recommend it was that it was an easy walk from the State Theatre. But even with that convenience, we don't plan on returning to Catherine Lombardi's."
