A word from Catherine Lombardi
Catherine Lombardi was the grandmother of owner Mark Pascal. Pascal, part owner of Stage Left Restaurant, brings his signature obsession with quality local ingredients to the cuisine of his youth. Catherine Lombardi's family came to Brooklyn from Naples. Her cooking was Neapolitan-based and heavily Brooklyn-influenced. It brought her whole extended family together every Sunday. Come taste why.

Cited Best New Restaurant and Best Italian Restaurant by NJ Monthly Readers’ Choice Poll, the red sauce is largely made from tomatoes the restaurant staff picks locally. To-order mozzarella, pressed eggplant rollatini, great pasta and a veal chop to die for are highlights.

Hand-made fresh juice cocktails are featured at the cocktail bar overlooking revitalized downtown New Brunswick. 21 new windows overlook downtown, offering a dramatic bird's-eye-view of The New Brunswick Theater District. It is a crown jewel in New Brunswick's thriving redevelopment.

Diner Reviews
  • "my wife and I had dinner here to celebrate our wedding anniversary....the food and the atmosphere was perfect...would highly recommend this restaurant for a special occasion or just to enjoy very good food in downtown New Brunswick."

  • "Can't say this is the best Italian restaurant I've been to for the price, but the selection was definitely unique and had new flavors to try out."
    Dined on 4/5/2014
  • "It says it is Italian food -- which we love. But this was nothing special. And both food and wine were very over-priced for what we received. The food was decent but bland. We have had much better food (at similar prices) at other restaurants in the immediate locale. The only thing to recommend it was that it was an easy walk from the State Theatre. But even with that convenience, we don't plan on returning to Catherine Lombardi's."

  • "Dining at Catherine Lombardi's was like being transported to an a world of luxury. The food was decadent and the servers were absolutely lovely. Great experience. Great way to celebrate an important event."

  • "I was part of a party of 6. We were an hour early. The Maitre'd paniced a bit, but seated us within 30 minutes. 5 of the six were delighted with their meals. I had a Pork Chop stuffed with sausage. I t was mouth watering delicious. The only complaint came from a friend that ordered the Shrimp Scampi. She said it was too lemony for Scampi. We ordered 5 Soups, 1 Salad, 1 Round of Drinks which were assorted house wines, 6 Entrees and 6 desserts, 1 was Crème Brulee and the remaining 5 were Sorbet or Ice Cream. The Bill was $400 including a tip which was automatically added to our bill. This restaurant was good for a very special occasion. The Server was Very good. I think that its pricey because of its proximity to The State Theatre."

  • "From the moment the door opened my wife felt like she was back in Brooklyn. The food and service is the best, a gem. Can't wait to come back."

  • "This is our go to restaurant for a special occasion and they always deliver. Great food, extraordinary wine list, and great cocktails. Service is always top notch. We will be back soon."

  • "The appswere a hit, especially the parmigiana cheese and the mozzarella carrozza . My swordfish entree was excellent, and prepared the way I asked. The same, however, could not be said of the flounder special, which the other three diners chose. It was mushy and had the feel of having been frozen, then thawed. The new recommended wine was superb. Desserts, as usual, were the typical crescendo to a great meal (but for the flounder). We left on a sour note, however, when the coat check girls (3 of them) had no idea what they were doing. They lost my good umbrella and had SIX number 56's. How does that happen? Aside from that, it was a nice evening and a good meal with friends."

  • "A bit pricey, but perfect pre-theater dining. Love the menus and the food. Higher end restaurant, but very comfortable. Recommended."
    Dined on 3/28/2014
  • "Excellent place to dine if you're going to a show at the NJ State Theater. Don't miss the 9-for-$20 antipasto tasting"
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "We always eat here before going to the State Theater. Great food, atmosphere and you get to the show in time."

  • "Planned to see show at the State Theater. Catherine Lombardi's was recommended by a friend. Perfect - great food; attentive staff and service was smooth and timely!"
    Dined on 3/20/2014
  • "The food was excellent and nice decor, but I had issues with the noise and their service practices. Our first table was so noisy we had to be asked to moved. The second location was better. They use some kind of team approach where any one or every one of the twelve (?) people working there serve everyone. It got almost silly at times, like "who are you?" when yet another face would come to the table. It also got annoying when I had to tell five different servers and the manager that, yes, I was still working on my plate (no one waiting for our table, so rushing us out was not their goal). If the place had dedicated servers or even a few servers per table, I would not have had to tell the entire staff individually that I was not done yet."

  • "Service was slow. We didn't have time for dessert, even with a 2 hour timeframe."
    Dined on 3/15/2014
  • "Food was very good - wine list very pricey - not enough mid level priced wines."

  • "The meal and atmosphere of Catherine Lombardi's is great. Staff is friendly and knowledgable. It was a great evening with great food. The wine list is great! We'll be back soon!"

  • "Most of the food was outstanding. The spinach and mushroom ravioli could have used a little more flavor. Bread should be put out with butter without having to ask for it. Overall it was a great experience. Food and service was excellent!"

  • "The food was very good. We started with clams casino and they were very delicious. Next we had 2 pasta dishes-one was orecchiette with broccoli rabe and sweet and hot sausage which was delicious. Portions were large so I took half of it home and it was great the next night. The other dish was a penne type pasta with a light cream sauce and prosciutto. It was absolutely delicious. For desert, I had chocolate lava molten cake, indescribable and my friend had a sabayon type dessert over fruit. We will definitely return."

  • "Upon arrival we were greeted by the Matre'D berating the hostess directly in front of us. He never once looked up at us as we stood there feeling very uncomfortable. Whether she made a mistake or not, we certainly did not need to witness his behavior. Once we were seated, we enjoyed a wonderful dinner. The server was friendly and knowledgeable...even reminding us how much time we had before showtime. Food was delicious."

  • "Convenient location. Great atmosphere. Nice bar w/exceptional cocktail menu. Maitre d and waiters were fun and helpful. Food was disappointing. Overpriced and saucy."

  • "The reception at the front desk made me feel that we were going to have a very special evening but it went downhill from there! The food was ok but I had expected better. The prices weren't outrageous but with one bottle of wine shared appetizer and salad and 2 entrees, we paid $150. The room was chilly but no one asked us about it, but the most off putting thing was the attitude of our waitress and the sommelier. They were so superior ! We asked questions about two of the specials and said that she needed explain the others, but she insisted and we had to sit through it! It may have given her pleasure but it did nothing for us. I wouldn't go back, but I don't think that they will care because they only really care about their regulars."

  • "Wonderful dining experience. The Veal Chop was grilled to perfection and as tender as a good filet mignon. Also, don't pass up the bread pudding for dessert. It was scrumptious! The wait staff was attentive and responsive, as well as friendly and informative. We will definitely go back."

  • "This is our second trip to Catherine Lombardi's and we had a wonderful time. The food is alway exceptional, and the Maitre d' is always eager to help with wine selection. His opinion on dishes and wines is always honest, sincere, and spot-on. Always a great experience here! We will definitely be returning, as it is becoming our favorite local restaurant."

  • "We had dinner at CL after an late afternoon movie, so we could have a more leisurely meal. A good choice. The space, ambience, and staff are well suited to a slower pace of dining with a manageable number of selections for the guest to have variety but allow the staff to devote the time and craft needed to perfect the dish & presentation. A winning strategy. Portions are humanely sized and leave room for a shared dessert with espresso. A return visit is planned."

  • "The service was attentive, the food was delicious and well-presented, and the ambience was perfect. The only thing I would change is to make the waiting area by the hostess station bigger; since I don't drink, I didn't want to wait in the bar. We will definitely be going back."

  • "We have gone to CL many times and it never disappoints. The space is beautiful and is well-maintained. The food is always delicious. The twist of old-fashioned nonna's cooking with modern variations; wild-boar bolognese was perfect. The ice cream/sorbetto sampler was a perfect way to end a meal. The only minor fine tuning needed, servers should pronounce dishes properly. Not expecting a total Italian accent, but a slight hint would be nice/appropriate. It's an Italian restaurant and pasta is not typically called noodles (at least not in NJ). Otherwise CL is a wonderful restaurant in the NB area and worth a visit(s)."

  • "The signature drinks were very good. For a Tuesday it was busy and our cocktails were slow coming. We were still enjoying them when the appetizers arrived and the wine opened. Staff was very attentive but I felt a little rushed as everything just kept arriving. Stuffed calamari/ Clams casino were both excellent (as was the sauce), all had a real "homemade" taste, were lightly stuffed and quite tasty. The sautéed spinach which accompanied the calamari was absolutely perfect. The raviolis were not as light as we like but the flavor (lobster and crab) was very good. We would probably go back as it is convenient to the theater, we would just like it to be a bit more leisurely :)"

  • "The restaurant is upstairs above Stage Left. I believe they are the same owners. We arrived and was told to wait for the Maître d to be seated. We didn't wait too long, maybe 5 minutes, but it was irritating to be simply standing there for no reason. We ordered wine and it took far too long to get. We were halfway done with the garlic bread before it came. I even asked where it was. Someone was 'getting it'. So, we wound up drinking wine with our dessert. The food was very good. The place is very nice and I liked the decor, but it is very loud. Overall, good food, but subpar service for the place it's trying to be."

  • "This is the best food in New Brunswick and the best food in the area. Prices are not terrible and there is something for everyone on the menu."

  • "Although this was a nice room, almost everything else was mediocre. The mozzarella and spiedine apps were just okay but my definition of spiedina is not a deep fried sandwich. eggplant parm was tasty although the excessive mozzarella had to be removed. My husbands osso bucco was tasty. Dessert was zabaione-just ok. heard so much about the great drinks. Mine was good, but mostly ice with a high price tag. My husbands martini was not right and the waiter did not offer to change it when we told him. When he saw that it was still full halfway through the meal, he asked if he could take it away without offering anything else. At the end of the meal, we had to ask to have it removed from the bill. Not good service. In sum, we will not rush back."

  • "Due to a location in the heart of the New Brunswick Theater district, this place is always on the short-list for folks with show tickets. We had a 6:15 reservation for 2 last Saturday night, and we happened to arrive 15 minutes early & were seated immediately! We had tickets for the 8:00 show at the State Theater - a win-win situation, right? Seemingly enough time to have an appetizer, glass of wine, entrees & coffee - well, the appetizers & drinks came out in an appropriate amount of time, but then the wait began. The bottom line is that they should be used to a theater crowd that's pressed for time and 2 hours should be enough time to have a leisurely dinner experience. We ended up skipping coffee & dashing to will-call for our tickets."

  • "Party of 4 got to Cl's for 6 pm reservation to find walk-around wine tasting for 75-100 people in middle of dining room. Was told tasting would be over apprx 6:45 but wasn't told about event when making reservation or when CL called to confirm. With no sound barrier, noise level was incredibly loud making conversation nearly impossible, like a sports bar during a big game. Tasting didn't end until 7:20 or so. Service was OK and meal was tasty except for unappetizing bone pieces found in sausage. Expressed disappointment to manager who apologized and agree with us. Received one free desert and sausage taken off bill. One of owners was busy chatting up tasters but never came to our table. Not what I expected from a well reviewed restaurant."

  • "Located right next door to the theaters in New Brunswick, Catherine Lombardi was the perfect place for dinner. The food was typical New Jersey Italian, very well prepared; and the wine list was outstanding. A perfect evening out."
