I know this is a teaching restaurant, but we ate at Bounty same weekend last year and had fantastic experience. Not so here. Courses are not appropriate. First course should not be a little portion of giardiniera or a few slices of dried beef, that is what you call an appetizer (and don't serve mortadella, that is just fatty bologna). Should be first course pasta, second course meat. We both opted for the pappardelle with brocolli because we figured it was the most filling item of the second courses. Pasta and sauce were good, but don't understand how a CIA restaurant would have FROZEN brocolli as an ingredient. Dessert also dissapointing. A tart does not have crust on top, and if you say it has caramel and nuts, then it should have CARAMEL with the nuts (and take "frutta" out of the name). Barely any espresso in the tiramisu, too dry. When you serve coffee, would be nice to get a spoon. Utensils with dessert also would be nice. Had to ask 3 waiters before we were told what region the "terra di vulcano" wine was from, and even then I am not sure they knew. Table by the waiter station is not a good idea, just remove it altogether!! If I am going to pay to eat at a high end restaurant, I should get a high end restaurant. Bounty last year was fantastic-food, service, table. Left full. At de Medici, we left hungry and very dissapointed. Eaten at Italian restaurants in NYC and Italy many times, sad to say this was at bottom of list. For the money I spent I'd rather eat in Manhattan at one of Mario's or Lidia's places or Forlini's on Baxter Street.

Food was o.k. but service was poor. While they are students, the below items are common sense.... 1) Needed to ask for water. 2) Bread arrived 'late' in the meal. 3) One entrée in the party was barely warm. It was still not hot after we requested it be reheated. 4) Three people served us coffee yet no one brought us spoons to stir in cream/sugar. 5) Desserts did not arrive after a longer than normal wait time. The manager then informed us the person preparing the desserts had left. We waited another 20 minutes before desserts finally arrived. 6) Wait staff did not return to pick up check. We took it to register. No one at register knew how to enter a gift card. We waited another 15 minutes for a manager to come and ring us out.

the overall experience was outstanding. We were impressed by our server Anderson. He was so helpful and courteous. The restaurant is beautifully designed and decorated. The suasage and polenta dish and the fava bean and chick pea soup were exceptional. The lava cake with pear was very good ,a little confusing as to how it was to be served.I loved the fact there was no background music,it made it much easier to have and understand conversation around the table. We would like a few more choices for the luncheon menu and it should be posted on your web site each time it changes.

The restaurant had a great garden and was easy to get to from the main road. The reservations were hard to get so we ended up getting an 1130am lunch. We arrived early but were seated at 1130am. We planned to order apps and then entrees but were told we had to put in the whole order at the same time. While its a little non-traditional for fine dining, they seemed to have a new round of students in both the front and back of the house, whic may be why that was required. The server was polite but not overly informative about the food. We ordered the pizza special and the bolognese. The bolognese was exceptional, the pizza was OK. We also had a prosciutto plate with cheese that was good. The campus is a very pretty place to walk around too.

I've heard a lot about CIA and it's restaurants. The campus was interesting seeing all the students in there chef outfits, unfortunately the food at Catarina de Medici was very disappointing. For an Italian restaurant it wasn't very Italian. Very few choices on the menu were Italian....there wasn't a pasta dish to be found unless you consider gnocchi and risotto pasta. My mouth was watering for good Italian food and still is. I can't put in words how disappointed I was.

Celebrated my spouse birthday, ordered flowers for her table, friendly greeting on arrival. Flowers were on table and service excelled. She was treated to a surprise birthday dessert acknowledging the occasion. The ambience was excellent the food was very good with excellent presentation. We were pleased with the waiter who was very attentive and made some suggestions on menu selection. Very attentive and responsive to all of our needs. Fluid service. Delightful event.

Service is impeccable....nothing short of Perfection. French Fries, and Onion Foccachia were amazing. Smaller, Delicate Portions. Our waiter was fabulous. Amazing that it is casual dress for such a beautiful restaurant. Garage Parking fills up fast, only two floors...we had to park where the students park. About a mile walk away from the restaurant itself. Restaurant is beautiful and is reminiscent of an Italian Villa. Very Impressed Overall.

It's very nice when your dining experience is intimately involved with students learning to serve well, to be hospitable, and to cook. It is a wonderful chance to participate in a very unique learning environment with excellent food. We enjoyed meeting our student server and learning his plans for the future. It was memorable for the earnestness of the students. The menu is really great too; carefully chosen and much more intelligent in Italian dishes offered. I had a delicious oxtail stew with Italian pignoli nuts. It was scrumptious.

The menu is interesting, Italian but not too traditional in that the pasta came with a rabbit ragu. My quail on polenta was just okay, but not attractive -- grey limp quail lying on top of a bed of beige polenta. It needed color, it needed a flavour zap. The soup, a hearty bean and kale was tasty. The snapper was cooked properly but lacked taste. Our second courses arrived before the first course plates were taken away. One of our wines was not the one we had chosen and the explanation was that our choice was at another table. The wait staff was charming -- they are all students from the Culinary Institute of America, as are the cooks.

Been to the culinary a few times here and there..I found the dinner menu didn't offer much variety this time..had a hard time picking a dinner entrée due to lack of choice. I had the snapper and it was cooked perfect ..but not seasoned enough...my son had the rabbit and pasta dish..which was a serving I would give to a child not an adult. my feeling overall..fair. Been to many restaurants and traveled much in my life and was kind of disappointed this time.

Loved the Caterina de Medici! We went for lunch as part of a trip to the Hudson Valley for theFall foliage. The Open Table reservation process was easy and seamless. The reminder phone call/emails were good. We went for lunch, and the Caterina de Medici was just a lovely daytime setting. It was bright and colorful and quite immaculate. The waitstaff all presented very well, and we felt comfortable asking all of them questions not just our waiter. This made the experience fun and insightful. Last but not least, the food was wonderful!! As a first course, I had the pumpkin crepe-how perfect an offering this time of year. For my main course, I had the pork with an incredible brown sauce (a moscato flavor)-Yum! Great experience!

We expected an efficiently served, properly cooked, and possibly creative meal. We received our appetizers in fair time, but waited far too long for our entrees, three of four of which were over cooked! The red snapper could have been recognized in the kitchen or by the waiter (Mike) to be over done and should not have even been brought out. Since we were having a family evening meal, we had the time to wait for the entree', but since we were at the Culinary Institute, we then expected the majority of the meals to be properly prepared to proper tenderness. The appetizers and desserts were OK. We did not make a fuss, not wanting to spoil our evening together.

Our risotto was out of this world. My husband's ox tail stew was delicious but my pork chop and potatoes were cold and inedible. We were so looking forward to our dinner as we loved our time in Italy. Unfortunately, I found the food and atmosphere to be less than anything Italian. The name of course rings true to Italy, but that was about all. Ordered a reasonably priced wine but was charged for a more expensive wine.

We traveled two hours to get to the CIA. The trip was beautiful, the grounds are gorgeous and so inviting. We had lunch, with wine, appetizers, first courses second courses, salads and desserts & coffee and cappuccino . We were a bit sticker shocked when we saw the bill, but then we considered all that we ate, drank and that the tip is included, it seemed more reasonable. 4 people, $275. Which for dinner would be expected, in the bright light of day for lunch, we were just surprised. The food was delicious, the waiter was wonderful and we had truly memorable experience.

Although the quality of the food was excellent, it took two and a half hours to receive our entrees. After about 30 minutes of placing our orders, the waitstaff announced that one of our orders was unavailable, and a sufficient replacement meal was ordered in its place. After two and half hours, three out of four meals were delivered, and the waitstaff announced, upon serving the other guests, that a different fourth meal was unavailable. It was awkward and embarrassing for both the restaurant and my guests, who were traveling from out of town and very much looking forward to their dining experience. The meal was comped, but it does not erase the poor service we received that night.
