The food and service were excellent. Creative dishes with excellent blending of flavors. Servings not too large. We had been warned that we might be the only diners in the restaurant which never feels comfortable (to us). Six other tables had couples on a Saturday night. So, it wasn't "empty" but far from "bustling."

Lovely sunshiney place with attentive servers. Surprised that one of the appetizers and one of the desserts were not available that day (we were the first diners of the evening, so they hadn't simply run out)--with only 5-6 appetizer, entree and dessert options you'd hope each would be available. The short menu meant that each item was prepared skillfully. Chicken was juicy and seasoned well, pork tenderloin had good texture and flavor. Our appetizer (scallops) was interesting but not amazing. The bread was dry. I'd say entrees were certainly worth the menu price, though none of the food was revelatory. I found seating arrangements odd (we were within a few feet of the hostess table, which didn't allow for much conversational privacy).

Recommend! A great addition to Sugarhouse. I was last at Catrina in February, and they have come a long way. Service was more refined, and it was enjoyable. The ambiance is a plus. Recognizing this is a French inspired restaurant, the food tries a bit to hard to impress. Really enjoyed the grapefruit and dill vinaigrette on the la salade du sud although it was heavy on the salt. Skip the phyllo wrapped salmon. While generous on portion the salmon is lacking on flavor. A higher quality salmon would be appreciated. The tomato strawberry gazpacho is highly recommended. Right location, right concept, right value... At 7:30 the setting sun was pretty intense on the outdoor dining area, but looked delightful a bit later.

This place was pretty horrible. If I would have known it was affiliated with Cocina Toscana I would have never gone here in the first place. First off, they seated us in some terrible back room that had dust bunnies the size of my arm. In addition to that they left an old food display case sitting in the back of us. Once the food came it was no better. The salmon was inedible due to its horrendous flavor. The dish itself was an execution that completely missed the ball. Moreover, the trout dish was practically rock hard. In addition to having no flavor due to it being covered in corn meal. I will absolutely never go back to any restaurant in this chain.

As a vegetarian amongst our group, I was delighted when chef Jean Louis Montecot offered to accommodate my diet with a pea risotto. Then I saw too many tempting side-dishes listed on the menu. At my earnest request, chef compiled a gorgeous Tour de Veg: thyme potato gratin, sautéed green beans, pickled onion sauté, snap peas, eggplant puree, and corn succotash--fresh and expertly prepared. I ate as well as any meat-eater at the table. Caterina occupies the building that was once the old Salt Lake City Post Office. While the restaurant's renovation was extensive, just enough remains to sing of the neighborhood's great charm. Don't miss the Italian hand-blown glass chandeliers and chalkboard pictures that hang in the central dining room!

My husband and I hadn't had a date night since before our daughter was born six months ago, so I was on the lookout for a good deal at a fancy place because I wanted to be "wined and dined," and I found one for this place. My husband was a little nervous about fine dining because rich people make him very uncomfortable and I feel much the same way, so we didn't really know what to expect of the atmosphere. We dressed in our best clothes and broke out our best manners, but the server and host were both very disarming and friendly. The food was very fancy and delightful , the wine was very warm, and we have a LOVELY time. It still was a tad pricey even with the deal, but it was worth it to me. We may just come back for dessert again!

I had a great meal here. Wine pairing were excellent. Decor is beautiful - music was romantic and the food was exquisite and innovative! My only qualm was I would like a little more privacy which I am sure could be accommodated with a simple request. The banquet room looks gorgeous and I was told they have private rooms for intimate gatherings. If your experience is as good as mine you'll be raving to your friends and family. Matt was our server and he will take care of you. Try the duck, the grilled romaine caesar and white chocolate apple jack tart! Happy eating :)

Catarina was chosen for birthday dinner with a friend. We were greeted at the door, seated immediately and attended to with a personal touch by the waiter and manager. The menu provided soups, salads, appetizers and several entrees. Our personal choices Tuna Carpaccio,La Farandole Salad and Porc Dijonnaise were delicious. The chef made a personal visit to our table and surprised with a decadent chocolate birthday dessert for two (complete with candle). The evening will remain a memorable moment and we look forward to sharing our experience at Catarina with others and yes we look forward to coming back soon............

After learning of the opening of this restaurant a few months ago, my wife and I decided to try it. We were very pleased. The setting is most beautiful, and the service is excellent. The menu is somewhat limited and unconventional, but great if you'd like to try something new. As the main dish, I had a rabbit in mustard sauce, which was excellent. The place would be great for a date or special occasion, and the outside tables should be most pleasant in Summer evenings. It was also fun to meet the Chef, who was born and learned cooking in France.

My ex girlfriend and I have been trying to find that spark in our relationship again. I decided to take her to Caterina to try a little something new. From the moment we walked in we were treated like royalty! We got a special tour of the resteraunt and buildings history and art. Chefs Matt and Chris came out and gave a description of each item we ordered, how it was cooked, what ingredients they used and to make sure we liked it. The atmosphere was great, the food is second to none, and the service can't be beat! My girl and I got back together that night and WE will be recommending Caterina to everyone as well as becoming frequent diners of this establishment! Gold Star all around!!! Bravo!!!

Service was a standout on our visit and the food was very good. Small/limited menu, but good variety and dishes we selected were tasty in the main. Ambiance is a bit of a let down as it is in the front area of the historic building, the expansive dining area for functions seems more fitting for the stylish menu as it looks excellent albeit sparse but could be utilised well - tables are too close currently and detracts from what is very good food (hence overall we'd feel a 3.5). Service was excellent, very attentive, entertaining and appearance by chef is always a good sign as keen to get feedback and stand behind product. Great to see a gem like this in Sugarhouse and look forward to returning and seeing how it evolves.

It was our first time at the restaurant. It was also to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The reviews were not encouraging in the beginning but the latest reviews led us to make the reservation and see what was there. We have a weakness for French cuisine. The food and service were outstanding. Piper always had a smile, Owen kept our water glasses full, and Matt (the Manager) was very good in discussing the dining options. The salmon in phyllo dough was outstanding. The pork belly entree was very good. We can't wait until Caterina is open for lunch and there is dining on the patio. The existing restaurant space is a bit funky and sparse. Notwithstanding the concerns with the interior, go for the food and the service.

Took my lady to this spot upon a recommendation of a friend. We were warmly greeted by the staff and the beautiful decor. Menu was simple and very fairly priced! Service was polished and unpretentious. When the food started coming to the table it not only looked very beautifully put together, but it tasted the part as well. The chef even made an apperance table side just to say hello and humbly asked if we were enjoying the experience. Balanced flavors, beautiful presentations, great service, and SOO reasonably priced; how could we NOT have been enjoying the experience?! Last thing, DO NOT jugde this place based on its affiliated restaurants, for in my opinion they are greatly overshadowed by this little gem here in Sugar House!

I would recommend Caterina to anyone who is looking for a low key restaurant with great food and service. p.s. Ask for Chris or Matt (chefs) and they will make sure you are taken care of. p.p.s. Being very familiar with the SLC food scene it’s hard for a chef and restaurant to surprise and impress me. But Chef Jean Louis and Caterina truly impressed me. My only regret is not having visited sooner. My wife and I had a wonderful time and loved the food. We also sincerely enjoyed that it was quiet enough to have a lengthy conversation without speaking loudly or interruption. (rare theses days) It was a pleasure to have the chef personally come out and speak with us and share some of his life stories. A wonderfully memorable and very enjoyable evening. We will be returning often.

We came to Caterina to celebrate our 31st anniversary. This is a new restaurant, opened in January 2013. Excellent food, attentive service. The chef came out to greet us, and was a very friendly gentleman. All the staff were quite helpful. All courses are a la carte, which is to be expected in this context. Prices were reasonable, particularly for the quality and presentation offered. The wine list is a bit short, but I prefer this sort of list to the telephone-directory size wine lists other places provide. Dessrt list was also short, but covered the bases of fruits, creme brulee, chocolate cake, and ice cream.

This beautiful restaurant serves amazing, complex food. The chef is clearly knowledgeable and creative. Flavors have depth. We could bring our foodie families from New Orleans, Los Angeles and New York and impress them. While the front room is elegant, it's shape is a bit awkward. We were there on a snowy night with few people, so it was not a lively scene. The front room may work better as an elegant bar that served appetizers or small plates and wine and cocktails. If the back room had a way to break up the space, it could lose the banquet hall look. This restaurant could become the neighborhood gem. It just needs to feel more accessible. We were treated like royalty and loved our meal. We also love atmosphere; a warmer feel is needed.

My boyfriend and I tried to go to this place for our Valentines day dinner. When we went in they seated us by the door, everytime someone walked in we felt cold air. We had them move us to another table, then when we finally looked at the menu the regular one was reasonably priced, but the special menu was 65 a person with very limited choices. Compared to the regular menu the set menu was exorbitant. The liquor menu was also ridiculous and when we asked the server for a regular alcohol menu she went to ask and then returned saying they didn't have one. When my bf asked about beer she didn't know either and had to ask. They only have two.If all of this wasn't bad enough, the had a Mormon social in their main space blasting bad prom music.

Caterina has real potential, and I so want it to succeed. I like what Cucina Restaurant Group is trying to do in Sugar House, but they have a ways to go... The menu is reasonable. Service was very rough, making the overall rating of 3 stars generous. A surprise and contrast to big sister Cucina Toscana. The food was good, but I can't say that any one dish stood out as exceptional. The prosciutto and salami on the charcuterie plate were grocery store quality at best. Salad was fresh and nicely presented. We tried medallions of pork and the duck confit. Both were good but slightly overcooked. The cherry tart desert and warm chocolate cake deserts were run of the mill. I'd love to try again, but expect the start up glitches to be fixed.

Steak was a little undercooked, but that was an easy fix and did not take away from the overall meal. We know they are still a young venue in town, but don't let that disuade you from trying it out. We hope Caterina will be a mainstay in our community. Lord knows we have enough of the chains around town and we need establishments like Caterina to help fill the void in having choices for epicurean experiences.

Catarina is a needle in the haystack. Unknown to most. I just happened upon it after searching the web for some new restaurants to try. They do absolutely no advertising for their venue which is a shame as it has great potential. They only have a plastic sign out front, otherwise if you were not looking for it, you would drive right by. It's in the quaint old post office of Sugar House just across from the new development going in. It has a very romantic charm and feel to it. The food is great, however they have one too many dishes with lamb in it. Three out of eight dishes have lamb and in my opinion lamb can make or break a dining experience. Stick to the steak, arline chicken, duck confit, trout and pork tenderloin.

Work in progress. Some dishes were quite good, some okay. As an example, the same sausage that came with the charcuterie was used in the cassoulet without any variation in size or shape. Nice wait staff, very friendly.
