A word from Castagna
Castagna serves as a clean, calm, modern canvas on which to showcase an artful presentation of food; a series of tastes that elevate the senses and reinterpret local cuisine. Executive Chef Justin Woodward imagines an edible landscape where diners become part of a cycle of abundance: not only tasting, but feeling, smelling, hearing, seeing, and, ultimately, understanding the food.

Chef Woodward offers two tasting menus each night. Diners can choose between a 5 course menu or explore the 10 course Chef’s Tasting Menu. A la cart and vegetarian options are also available.

The 10 course Chef's Tasting Menu for parties of 4 or less is available until 9pm. We offer our 10 course Chef's Tasting Menu for larger parties on request.

Vegetarian Tasting Menus available with 24 hours advanced notice.

Diner Reviews
  • "This past week two old college friends came to the area to visit. I took a day off. I sent them links to menus to a few places I like, including Castagna, and this was their choice. The food was brilliant as always. They loved the creativity and flavors of the snacks. I have to say the quasi molecular deviled egg was my personal favorite. But the buckwheat cracker with beef tartar was another favorite. We chose the dinner menu. The onion custard dish was spectacular in flavor and texture. Between the 3 of us we ordered everything and shared most of it. My friends loved the food and will remember this meal for a long time. Service was great and leisurely enough to let us continue our day of reuniting after many years. Bravo."

  • "This was an interesting dinner. I am an adventurous eater but I can't say the food was as delicious as it was interesting, experimental. The portion sizes are incredibly small, which I liked, but my husband left hungry. For four people at the prix fix menu, we left with a $600 bill, which would put this in the "very special occasion," if ever occasion, dinner."

  • "Exceptional dining experience. I rarely write reviews but was blown away be their creative presentations. Ever bite imparted a wonderful combination of flavors."

  • "Huge disappointment! The food quality was excellent there just wasn't much of it and it took a very long time to get. In a city with many eating choices Castagna would not be a place I would recommend. We took a guest from San Francisco to Castagna and both he and my husband were still hungry afterwards - we ended up at the restaurant next door where they order steak, hamburgers and fries. Our guest commented that he could always find pretentious restaurants in SF and he did expect to find one in Portland."

  • "The dinner was unlike anything I had had before, it was quite delicious. The whole dinner was quite an experience. The snack part was brought out in single decorative sections that you almost didn't want to eat, but once you tried it it was quite tasty. I did the pairing which was good, some wines I didn't care for but others were quite good especially with the food it was served with. The atmosphere was pleasant. When we arrived the place had a few diners. As it filled I noticed the temperature became quite warm, I took of my jacket and was still quite warm, I don't know if it was because we were near the kitchen."

  • "Beautiful, innovative dishes prepared perfectly every time. The consensus amongst our table of four was that Castagna is the best restaurant any of us has ever been to. Dining here was a very special experience."

  • "Dining here is a top-quality "food as entertainment" experience. Each dish is beautiful with unusual ingredients, transformed textures, and surprising juxtapositions. Wine pairings are wonderful. Plan on spending the evening."

  • "Tasty and creative use of locally sourced ingredients Loved the tasting menu with wine pairing. Left happily filled but not stuffed. Wonderful combinations of flavors--not sure where he thinks of them! A relaxing, delicious evening. Staff was knowledgable and appropriately attentive. Would return in a heartbeat!"

  • "This was my second time at Castagna and the tasting menu, was again, a wonderful and enjoyable experience. From the snacks to the desserts all the dishes were unique and delicious. The service was well done and attentive."

  • "It wasn't just dinner, it was an experience, and an amazing one at that. Every last detail was thought about. It may be pricey, but you won't regret it. If I had the money, my husband and I would come back again and again. You'll try things you never even knew you could eat or would have dreamed would taste good. I loved every single thing we ate. I recommend doing the Chef's tasting Menu if you go. Don't miss out on the opportunity to try something new in every bite! The food was out of this world, the service was great and the drinks were delicious!"

  • "Crisp clean seasonal flavor profiles, organic and aesthetically pleasing presentations blended with a team of skilled cooks created an excellent tasting menu adventure. The service staff was gracious and sincere. These pieces all created a memorable night for my wife and I on our anniversary. Thank you to the Castagna team."

  • "Great place. Interesting, very unique menu. Went there for my one year anniversary and had a blast. We chose the chefs tasting and wine pairing, so after all was said and done the bill was $440 with tip, but I'd say it was worth it. Don't know if I will go again, but it was a great one time find for sure."

  • "Castagna serves beautifully plated food that is inventive and unique. We ordered the chef's tasting menu, which included around 20 separate small dishes. Servers do an excellent job explaining dishes and are very attentive. While the food is exquisite to look at and expertly prepared, my husband and I found that the chef's palate did not entirely align with our own and some of the flavor combinations presented were not to our liking, including several dishes that we simply could not bear to finish. We typically enjoy unique food and flavor combinations, but some dishes just were not for us. The desserts were truly the shining stars of our meal and were all beyond outstanding. I wish the rest of the meal had been as delicious."

  • "This is truly the most incredible dining experience that we have EVER had. Their food is art: i.e., the Asparagus, wilted sorrel, morel mushroom is presented as a water lily pond; almost too beautiful to eat but the flavor is fabulous. If we ever return to Portland, this will always be on the top of our dining list."

  • "The flavors were perfectly melded and the sauces were to die for. The presentation was spot on. I will definitely be back!"

  • "What a fun experience! Molecular gastronomy at its best! Delicious food presented in an unusual way. A bit spendy but worth it. "

  • "Enjoyed the five course tasting menu, starting with a series of "snacks" before the various courses. Onion terrarium with peas was especially interesting and showcased the chef's preferences for interesting sauces (several were added to the plate by servers as courses presented). Food was delicious and service level and timing of the dishes was excellent. Occasion was a graduation celebration and just what we wanted to please two vegetarians in our party. Highly recommended."

  • "Chef Justin Woodward and the staff at Castagna are always perfect. The food is thoughtful, beautiful, inspiring and of course delicious. The staff is meticulous, attentive, friendly and have the perfect hint of casualness which makes for a fun, but still incredibly romantic dining experience. There menu is always changing, so I like to go at least once a year picking a different season each time to see what the Chef creates with what just came in. Best dining experience of my life every time. Go go go."

  • "Did not ecpect to find a restaurant like this in Portland. Very creative and delicious tasting menu. Great wine pairings - 12 different wines with decent pours. The dinner service was slow paced, but not dragged out, so you had time to enjoy all of the various wines. Service was very attentive and most all of the courses very tasty - almost one half of the menu was raw - a bit more than our usual taste, but overall outstanding!"

  • "We were very impressed indeed by Castagna. The chef's tasting menu brought four hours of pleasure: multiple plates that had been carefully prepared from high quality ingredients and presented with precision and beauty. Dishes that made us happy: imaginative, and technically at the highest level, but never "clever" for the sake of it. Castagna is a very good restaurant indeed, right up there with some of the best restaurants we've visited in N. America and Europe. In a different location we'd be discussing the appropriate number of Michelin stars. But -- because it is where it is -- it's still easy to get a reservation. Do it! (Note for visitors to Portland: Castagna is easy to reach from the city centre using bus number 14)."

  • "You would be doing yourself a disservice by not ordering the complete tasting menu. Every bite was sublime. This was the best meal I've had since visiting Michelin starred restaurants in Spain. On par with Mugaritz! "

  • "I believe Castagna to be the best restaurant in Portland and that's saying a lot. To be honest, I can't think of any restaurants outside of Portland that can top this dining experience. The food is world class and the service top notch. "

  • "While I am no food expert, I have lived in NYC and traveled throughout Europe. I have eaten in some of the best restaurants in Paris. Our celebratory dinner at Castagna is in my top three most memorable meals. From start to finish, it was a culinary joyride. Amazing!!!! "

  • "We had the expanded set course menu and it was as memorable as any meal I have ever had. A once in but a few occasions experience."

  • "Castagna is elegantly casual and relaxed. We chose the Prix Fixe menu with wine pairings. Each wine beautifully complimented the dish and a couple were really happy surprises. How do they do those lovely roasted beet cups that hold the most subtle and flavorful cured beef? A little sprig of nasturtium gave a piquant note to soft and smooth flavors and textures. Presentations are small. And there are enough so we felt nicely satisfied and definitely well cared for. Wait staff was attentive, friendly and unobtrusive. They were obviously aware of our timing. The flow of the dinner was timed to our timing not on the restaurants schedule. We closed the place down and when we left, it felt like we had just left a good friend's house."

  • "Castagna lived up to its reputation. Had been to the Cafe several years ago but the restaurant was very good. the 4 of us all found the food to be inventive, tasty, unusual blend of great ingredients and healthy. The service was noteworthy, we were served by many people but they all worked seamlessly as a team. I consider this one of the best restaurants in Portland and highly recommend it for a special evening."

  • "This was far and away the best meal I have had in a long time, one of the best ever. We did the big chef's tasting menu. It was full of delights, surprises and wonder. Even though there are so many courses (like maybe 20 if you include the opening snacks), the meal was perfectly paced. Yes, you will be there for perhaps four hours, but it sure doesn't feel like it. Excellent wine list as well as cocktails. Do it! Go on a culinary adventure!"

  • "We have been to Castagna approximately six times over the years. And while we found the food very good the prix fixe menu was disappointing (our fault for not checking beforehand). If you are ok with a prix fixe menu then you will not be let down."
