Not over the top great like some other reviews have claimed. Pretty restaurant, nicely appointed. Menu was very interesting. Pork chop was excellent. Osso Buco was good but not exceptional. Award winning Cioppini not award winning. Old Log Old Fashioned was excellent.

We dined here before seeing the play, "LIfe Could Be a Dream". The presentation of our food was beautiful. Our waitress, (Janele?) was excellent. She was always there when we needed her, and she was very efficient. We both enjoyed our food. I had the porkchops, which were delicious, however, the risotto was very slimy, not very good. It said it was served with peapods. I expected large peapods, not shaved ones on top otf the porkchops. My boyfriend got the salmon which was very good. We ordered the flourless chocolate cake which was very good. The timing of the meal was perfect. We weren't rushed and we got to the play at the right time. We would dine here, again, before a play. I was disappointed, however, that there weren't very many Gluten Free Options with the $30 three course meal. I would recommend this place before a play.

The newly remodeled restaurant adjoining The Old Log Theater has definitely upgraded the theater experience at the Old Log. Very fresh, contemporary design with menu choices from old favorites to new and enticing selections. Prices are not inexpensive when ordering off the main a la carte menu. There is however, a Pre Theatre Menu with 4 selections that is reasonably priced to include salad, vegetable, potato, dessert. During the summer when the sun doesn't set so early, there will be a lovely view out of the dining room windows that curve around the bar area. We both had the beef short ribs from the Pre Theatre Menu and it was fork tender with delicious spices and lovely presentation. The new, front area of the restaurant is lovely. There is an area in the rear tho that doesn't seem to have been included in this facelift and gives an old barn type feeling to that part of the dining room. Seemed very ordinary compared to the fresh new face on the front half. Service was friendly and we didn't feel rushed.

Restaurant beautifully redone. Took a long time for our first drinks but they handled it well and comp'd the round. Overall, the menu is too pricey to consider this restaurant as a place to just drop in for dinner. It would help if they had more choice at a lower price point. Wine and beer selection excellent and fairly priced. We would return.

My wife and I were drawn by the musical revue "Life is but a Dream", doo-woop themed show, but couldn't stop talking about the meals. My wife raved about her Tilapia which was fresh, lightly flavored with herbs and pan seared to perfection. The string beans and fingerling potatoes were a wonderful compliment. My Wild Boar Shank was succulent and very flavorful. But the highlight was the Sweet potato hash, comté cheese and sautéed ginger-scallion Dinosaur kale. It was like an Asian salsa that went well with the wild boar. The unique looking menu selections make us want to return soon, but I'll be hard pressed to not order the wild boar again.

I tried to send 11/3/14. I apologize for walking out on our reservations. That is something I never do. There was a reason. I was told to make the reservations over the phone for 4 PM. We went to the 2 PM show. We were out by 3:45 PM. We waited by the stand to start our dining experience. No one was manning your reservation desk. As we watched others look at the menu intending to eat, we did the same. We waited and waited, watching others look for someone to talk to and slowly leave. Finally, at 4:05 PM we decided you really did not want our business. We did go elsewhere to eat even though we were looking forward to eating with you. We did feel guilty leaving as none of us had ever done that before but we were hungry.

  • Great Pre-theatre Dinner

Four of us dined at Cast and Cru prior to a play at the Old Log Theatre. First of all, the dining room looks terrific-- very warm, welcoming, and comfortable. Second, our server was attentive and pleasant. Third, there was a nice hum of conversation, but we were always able to hear each other and converse without yelling. The food itself was generally very good to good. The duck and bacon poppers were very tasty but a bit tough. My Pork Osso Buco was extremely tender, yet the seasoning in the sauce was a little overpowering. I would like to see the prices come down a bit and the preparation improved. But overall, a good start, and I am hoping for better things to come.

There was no signage that we could see from the main rd to know this was inside the theatre building. When calling to ask for info, you get a voice recording to leave a message. We were late and frustrated. Old Log is looking pretty run down, so having a contemporary restaurant inside just didn't look like it fit. After being seated the busboy spilled water on the table and on the floor. Nobody came to clean anything up until ten minutes later when I started soaking up the water with my napkin. Help needs instruction for addressing these things. We had the breakfast burritos and would not recommend. Nothing stood out out at all, was a bit unusual with ingredients. We will not return.

Go to the Old Log Theater to see the show, but don't bother eating at Cast & Cru unless they reduce the prices and increase the food quality. I had their fish plate for $30 and it didn't have much flavor at all. The salad, bread, and desert were not very spectacular either. Applebees and many other restaurants serve higher quality food and at lower prices than Cast and Cru.

It was the first time at the new restaurant, Cast & Cru. We have been coming to the Old Log Cabin for years and my husband even came here with his family over 40 years ago. We were AMAZED at the transition. The restaurant looks great...The chef has some very fun and exciting menu items ....We had their Osso Bucco specialty and it was DELICIOUS. Our server was so sweet and professional. We haven't had a dining experience like this since we went out of town to a San Francisco restaurant. I enjoyed this more. And I'm a celiac. They had gluten free foods marked so you didn't have to guess. the experience was absolutely wonderful and we'll go back again.

This is an unbelievable transformation of a restaurant. Do not think of it as dinner theater food like it used to be. We loved the duck poppers - a very shareable starter. I love the fact that the chef is really trying some innovative things as well as the predictable. Bonus points for serving enough grilled baguette slices with the cioppino. Whoever is in charge of desserts deserves deserves recognition for creativity. We shared a martini glass of huckleberry compote with vanilla yogurt. It was tart, sweet, refreshing and plenty to share.

Cast & Cru is right at the Old Log Theatre and has recently gone thru an amazing transformation - they kept enough of the original charm that was there and just added exactly what it needed - the restaurant feels like you are at a very nice restaurant in downtown Minneapolis but you are in a beautiful private setting in Excelsior and just grab a beverage at the Bar for a few steps right into the theater for a very entertaining play - the talent they pull in to the Old Log is very impressive - resulting in standing ovations - A one of a kind location and experience nothing like it in the Twin Cities which makes it a destination I recommend to all of my friends!

I rarely fill these out; your restaurant is very nice and a great addition to the OLT. The service was great too - nice energy and very friendly but the food was disappointing. My Wife ordered the Duck Poppers and thought it was mediocre (very dry). My Daughter and I ordered burgers and I asked for mine medium rare and it was over-cooked. Buzz Kill. I told the waitress (because she asked) and she took a look and agreed. I'm sure you'll correct that and respond to your patrons reviews. You offer a creative menu. The restaurant has great potential and you'd think people would want to come just to eat and hang out but the food needs work - it fell short. Good Luck!

We had lunch before a matinee performance. Service was professional and friendly, and helpful with timing to make it to show when it started without being pushy. The menu is very interesting, with a nice variety of "simple" and "gourmet" so there is something for everyone regardless of personal taste. Food was delicious and beautifully plated. Full bar and nice wine list are available-we had Bloody Mary's with their own infused vodka and homemade pickled green bean garnish-delicious and the perfect start to an excellent meal, followed by an excellent production!

I was amazed to walk in the door and see the all-new remodel of the restaurant. It's beautiful, classy and current. The menu was the same. Unfortunately, the food itself didn't seem to hold up. My mango chicken salad looked great, but the flavor was bland and the chicken dry. My parents (we were celebrating their 80th birthdays) liked their food but weren't thrilled. I know there may still be bugs to work out - the restaurant is new - and am totally wiling to give it another try because I loved the setting so much.

Still a bit unorganized. Our waiter was obviously new, and not very knowledgeable about wines, or to describe menu items. They were out of one the items someone ordered (at 6:00?). The presentation of the food was very nice, but would like to see more "regular" type appetizers and light plates. They don't need to make everything "so fancy".
