A word from Cashion's Eat Place
When New York Times writer Jan Benzel described the ambiance at Cashion’s Eat Place in 1997 as “funky-elegant,” she was right on the money. That combination, a just-right mixture of laid-back neighborhood conviviality and serious (and seriously good) food, has defined Cashion’s since it opened in 1995. Even now, over a decade after it first welcomed diners, the restaurant remains true to its roots, serving interesting and fresh food in a relaxed way. For the past 18 years, Cashion’s Eat Place has combined refinement and relaxation better than anyone else. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Very nice decoration, with good service and pleasant food."

  • "Another wonderful meal at Cashion's. We don't eat out as much as we used to, but Cashion's is one of our favorites, and it was even worth the trek across the river through Cherry Blossom chaos. Halibut was perfect. Special thanks to Justin for his wine recommendation."

  • "A favorite of my wife and I, we hadn't been back in a few years, it's still very good - the food is interesting, the appetizers and starters are maybe more interesting than the main dishes, but it's all good. I had bison steak main dish which was very tasty and included excellent veggies, sauce, and starch. From what I remember, prices have gone up - I used to compare a lot of new restaurants to Cashion's and thought the new ones were too expensive and not worth it compared to what you could get at Cashion's - now Cashion's seems to have adopted the new pricing structure, but I do think the experience and food are worth the price. Service is excellent, drinks provided right away and are exactly what you asked for."

  • "Food was great - portions were small. It would have been great if the menu (or the server) recommend we order sides with the entrees. The description of the dinners indicates sides come with them. That being said, the food was excellent. We would have ordered more food after our entrees, but the service was SO slow, we couldn't stand to wait anymore."

  • "I am a foodie from San Francisco and I found the selections creative and appealingly served. All top notch! Quite nice for a single too."

  • "Stumbled upon Cashions while looking for a good brunch place. Saw the menu had shrimp and grits and decided to try it out. I was not disappointed. The food was good, the place was lively and played great background music. Friendly wait staff was the icing on the cake. A great brunch experience."

  • "We enjoy this restaurant. The seafood selections are always good. The salad starters are fresh and crisp. We like the ambiance and it is right in the middle of Adams Morgan. Parking is difficult because there is no Valet service. The wait staff is okay but a bit absent minded. All in all, the restaurant has a casual vibe and the food is always very good."

  • "Went with a group (there were 4 of us from out of town attending a conference). Pleasant trendy place with lots of yuppie types ... but the food was simply not as great as the hype. Perhaps it's unfair to use NYC standards but I can;t help it.. the Zagat number was way higher for Cashion's than it should have been Service very good, staff extremely helpful. But I find it an obligation to place such trendy places with high reputations under stricter scrutiny."

  • "Overall, we were not pleased with the service. The food was ok, but our server was not attentive to helping us choose our menu items."

  • "This time I was thoroughly disappointed with Cashion's. It has been my favorite restaurant of the area. The appetizer was delicious but the Halibut was too cooked and the portion was unusually tiny. I always eat the same thing at this restaurant therefore I know the portion they serve normally. I am a small eater but coming back home from the restaurant, for the first time in my life I was still hungry. The" hot" herbal tea they served us was tepid to cold. Having said that, I would come back to this restaurant as the food is fresh and of good quality. But I would definitely talk with the restaurant manager before ordering my fish. The place is friendly."

  • "Friendly and attentive bartender. Moved outside to ear dinner. Food was creative and very tasty, but portions were small for this hungry male adult. Service was terrible. Lots of "I'll be with you I'm a minute." (Not). I'd recommend the restaurant with the belief that the bartender is more reflective of this place than our food server."

  • "I hadn't been to Cashion's for a few years which I recalled having really good food. Huge disappointment. One fish entree was so salty we had to send it back. The Halibut was pretty good but a very small piece of fish for close to $30. Also, the food came out so quickly one has the impression it was pre-pared. The third dish was bison which again, was pretty good but not as yummy as I anticipated. Plus, the wait staff seemed very hassled - yes, it was a busy Friday night but their harried nature took away from the ambience. All in all, no longer worth the high prices in my view."

  • "Went there for sunday brunch, with a 1:30 reservation. The brunch menu was already small, but we were told two items were out, one of which was wafffles...how do you run out of waffle batter? Overall, fair experience"

  • "I had to go to the bar and get drinks. First time there and not one staff member acknowledged our presence after 10 minutes. Bread and oil was horrible. Main meal was good. Would not return"

  • "Great ambiance, but poor service and a lack of menu options were big detractors."

  • "I love Cashion's - the food is fantastic. I had heard rumors of a slip in food quality since the owner left, but this was not the case. My food was outstanding. My one complaint is that there were very few vegetarian options, and absolutely no vegetarian entree options. In a day when wonderful, creative chefs are making outstanding vegetarian and vegan food, many restaurants in the city have specific vegetarian menus. It's time for Cashion's to catch up with that trend."

  • "I'd like a few more veggie options, but overall very good quality food."

  • "Dined here w. my bf. We ordered 3 entrees: shrimp & grits, eggs benedict, and the chicken hash. We were seated immediately, which was great. The smaller tables (for 2) were extremely close to others, which wasn't to our liking (we could hear every word from tables beside us). The chicken hash came out first, and was quite fab. Shrimp and grits was ok (not a huge fan of grits), and the eggs benedict was good. I had ordered grapefruit juice, which was pretty bad-- had to switch to oj, a few sips through bc it just tasted old. Server was not too attentive... She stopped by maybe once after our food was out, not to mention had been slow to take our order. Would recommend for chicken hash only, though portion was quite small. 3 stars, over all."

  • "This review is only for Sunday brunch at Cashions. It was a much welcomed warm Sunday in February, so everyone was out and about. The restaurant was busy, particularly the patio area, which was vibey and sunny - we were somewhat jealous of those who were fortunate enough to nab a table outside. We waited an unusually long time for our food and we pinned this down to an overload of people earlier on in the day. But the food was worth the wait, everyone's dishes, from the burger, to the shrimp and grits were delicious. We really wanted to try their donuts, but sadly they had run out. We settled for the pecan sticky buns instead, they were awesome! This brunch is not going to blow you away, but it's solid. Get a table outside on a warm day."

  • "The meat and fish entrees looked great. As a vegetarian, the veggie plate option didn't sound particularly creative, so I went with soup and salad--nothing to write home about. Overall, it was a lovely evening, wine and company."

  • "We had the tasting menu, as the duck featured in the menu on their web sit was not on the menu. The salad course and the fish course were great, but the bison steak with bearnaise was incredibly salty. It was a long time between courses, for which the waitress apologized. The dessert, an almond torte with poached pear, was simply ordinary. We had to search the wine list for affordable wines that would go with the tasting menu, but we fortunately found one. Twice, the wait staff asked if we had any questions. We did, but the waitress did not stick around to give us the answer. The noise level is deafeningr. On one side, we had the yellers, on the other one of the diners moved his elbow and poked one of us in the ribs."

  • "We went for brunch on Saturday. Got the bottomless mimosas, which turned out to be mostly orange juice. Usually after 5-6 mimosas I garner a bit of a buzz at the least, sometimes fully lit up. I didn't even get a buzz of these. The whole point of spending $15 for mimosas is that you get some alcohol in them! Otherwise, the food was delicious, the service attentive, but I wouldn't go back for brunch."

  • "It's great that Cashions is still surviving in Adams Morgan and wonderful for locals to have a good place to go. We went there for the 20 year anniversary of our first date in Adams Morgan. The only reservation we could get was for 6:15, which was okay because we wanted to see a movie. Even though the restaurant was empty, they put us near the front by the windows where it was really cold. They had space heaters but still not sure why we had to sit there. The wait staff was very nice and the appetizer/salad was good as was the wine. The problem was that it took over an hour to get our entree. They indicated that as a result it would be 'on the house' but in the end it was on the bill and we were in a hurry not to miss our movie."

  • "Great service and solid options throughout all sections of the menu. However if you're going when the weather is cold, as it's been most of the winter bring a sweater. There's a definite chill at most of the tables in the front of the house so you'll want a seat near the back. Food was ok - maybe it was cold in the kitchen but the food was not quite hot when it got to the table. Great for brunch though on the couple of occasions we've gone there."

  • "Great meal and service. Tables are very close together so there's no privacy and lots of traffic around the tables. Well worth it but don't go if you're looking for a secluded table and quiet conversations."

  • "My friend and I showed up a few minutes early for our reservation and were seated immediately. Here's the best thing about Cashion's brunch: If you can't decide if you want bottomless bloodies or mimosas or the specialty cocktail, YOU DON'T HAVE TO. You can switch betwixt until the cows come home. It is the most excellent. My friend got the organic chicken hash, and I had the croque madame. Both were absolutely delicious. My croque was rich but not too filling. We also split some doughnuts at the end. They were piping hot and a delightful end to the meal. Service was good, but perhaps a little slow on the drink refills. Everyone was friendly and helpful--full of recommendations! Looking forward to returning."

  • "Made a last minute booking on a Saturday night. Choice was limited and this was the only place I could get in that I heard good things about. And I'm really glad I chose this place. It's been around a long time and I'd never been and thought it might be a little out of date. Far from it. Great food, nice wine list with some unusual choices from France at reasonable prices. It was busy but the noise level was good - buzzy but easy to talk. Our waitress had a mix of polite, discreet but fun and she really knew the menu and the wine list. This is a new one on my favorites list."

  • "Enjoyed a great brunch on Sunday for a noon reservation. When we arrived we notified the hostess that the couple we were joining were going to be 15 minutes late and the hostess informed us that the previous group had not left the table so there was not an issue. We walked up to the bar and each ordered a cocktail. I would have to say Cashion's has the best Bloody in town and the garnish on top was amazing. All around the food was amazing and the service was very good. The menu is constantly changing which is never a bad thing and the chef keeps on turning out amazing entrees. We cannot wait to go back."

  • "nothing special. Shrimp and grits were good b ut skimpy; I felt I did not get enough for the price. Overpriced for the food and atmosphere."

  • "We had been looking forward to having brunch here. Unfortunately, we came away unimpressed and sorry we had spent the money. For starters, we ordered bloody marys ($10) which were over -seasoned. The sticky bun, highly recommended by our waitress, was just ok, kind of blah. My dish of shrimp and grits looked great, but the shrimp was overcooked, the grits with tomato shrimp sauce was rather tasteless. My dining companions ordered the Organic Chicken Hash and the Eggs Benedict. The chicken in the hash dish was dry...as in, curled up dry and hard. The eggs were overcooked. The Eggs Benedict was the only dish that was halfway decent. The total bill with tax and tip was $120...way too much money for a mediocre meal. Will not return."

  • "The hash dish was incredible as was the shrimp and grits. The drinks were inconsistent from first round to second round and were priced high. Service was good. The pecan roll was mediocre and the donuts were OK to good."

  • "My spouse and I have fond memories of Cashion's Eat Place: it is where we had our first successful date in 1998. Since then, despite changes in taste, ownership, and the surrounding area, Cashion's has continued to perform at a high level. Food is consistently well prepared without being flashy. This was true at our most recent visit: my gumbo was tasty but pretty routine. A red fish entree had good flavor and texture, showing careful conception and preparation but not great creativity. (The kitchen could have been faster, by the way; dishes were slow in appearing at both our table and those surrounding.) The most creative -- and best -- dish was a citrus cake. As has been the case since the 1990s, portions are sized moderately."
