A word from Cashion's Eat Place
When New York Times writer Jan Benzel described the ambiance at Cashion’s Eat Place in 1997 as “funky-elegant,” she was right on the money. That combination, a just-right mixture of laid-back neighborhood conviviality and serious (and seriously good) food, has defined Cashion’s since it opened in 1995. Even now, over a decade after it first welcomed diners, the restaurant remains true to its roots, serving interesting and fresh food in a relaxed way. For the past 18 years, Cashion’s Eat Place has combined refinement and relaxation better than anyone else. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Had the tasting menu which included wine pairings. During one of the courses the wine director began refilling my glass with a different wine than was already in it and jokingly apologized with a quip about making his own blend. I appreciated his wit; made me feel at ease. I did not appreciate, however, that he did not restore the contents of my glass with enough wine to enjoy the rest of my course, which was good but lackluster. One might have thought it would otherwise be a drool worthy experience though, considering the cost of the whole thing for two people and nothing additional: $187 plus a $40 tip. The neighborhood seems to like it, as it appeared the locals knew how to avoid getting ripped off by ordering entrees to share."

  • "A lovely restaurant, great ambiance, wonderful food, and a place I would highly recommend from just a nice dinner with a friend to a romantic evening. The quality of the food was excellent, exotic options, and a beautiful wine list."

  • "A precious gem that never loses its' luster, this is the experience of Cashion's."

  • "Great brunch and bottomless mimosas, bloody marys and gin drink for $15. Food is delicious with some great flavor combinations and a number of unique options. Even classics like the shrimp and grits are well balanced. This is a great neighborhood location."

  • "So, you do the math. Love this place. Food is great. Service is great. Cocktails are great."

  • "Our group of three very much enjoyed our brunch—grilled cheese and shrimp and grits—until half way my portion, I found a rusty nut (the hardware kind) from my portion. As expected, I got a prompt and sincere apology, a new portion and the item off our check. While glad I didn't break a tooth, I still wonder how this rusty piece became part of my brunch item. I was really excited to try out Cashion's Eat Place, potentially finding a new favorite in the neighborhood. However, after this unsettling experience, I probably won't recommend the establishment although the food, service and ambience would deserve four stars without the nut experience."

  • "My husband and I were so excited to bring friends of ours to Cashions. I hadn't been there for about a 12 years but had good memories. Boy was I wrong! The service is beyond terrible. The waitress and other wait staff were surly and ignored us. The apps were meager as well. After we ordered our main courses -- it took well over an hour for them to arrive. Then the skate fish I had tasted like urine. This incredibly strong aroma hit my mouth as soon as I put it on my tongue and it was all I could do to get my napkin in front of my mouth to spit it out. I can honestly say I've never had that happen before with a $28.00 piece of fish. It was embarrasing for us to host our friends here. We will never return."

  • "Food was average. Fried fish dish was not specified in menu as fried. The ambiance and mission of the restaurant are great! Good location."

  • "After hearing about this place I decided to take my wife there for a date night. They put us right by the door in this cubby hole where there was already a couple and we felt like we weren't even in the restaurant. For an app we had their seasoned pickles wich were ok, but $7 for one pickle cut in quarters was way too much. I had the bison sirloin which was good, small/medium portion size with a few onion rings and their special steak sauce, which I had a taste of but liked the flavor of the bison better than the sauce. My wife had the salmon and thought it was bland. Overall just a disappointing experience for a date night."

  • "Interesting menu that changes daily. Close to farm to table. Excellent bison. Wine list is weak and beer selection is limited. Service was pleasant but could have been more attentive."

  • "Fantastic service, great menu with a few things you rarely see in restaurants, the stinging nettle soup and veal sweetbreads are stellar."

  • "Excellent service and great outdoor dining. Have been here for brunch too and that was a great experience as well. My only gripe this time is that my main dish felt somewhat small. I ordered the duck and it was like two duck legs and a little bit of mash/veggies. It felt a bit small for the price point, like it should be an appetizer/starter instead of a main. I know in Bethesda at Mon Ami Gabi, they serve duck confit as an appetizer for about half the price and it's more filling than Cashion's. My dining companion's main dish however looked like a good portion size though."

  • "We went for brunch I had Shrimp and a grits, my husband had Eggs Benedict both were excellent. The pecan sticky bun was to die for. "

  • "I wanted to like Cashion's. The outdoor seating is lovely on a warm spring night. The menu looks promising. However, it doesn't fully deliver. An order of grilled ramps was a tiny pile of limp scallions with a random sauce - nothing inspiring. We ordered the scallops for $29 and the plate arrived with 4 small scallops and a tiny bit of garnish. More like an appetizer portion. My husband sent it back, but we were told that was the way the dish came - no way to garnish it more generously. The halibut main was much more generous with a lovely large piece of fish, but there was no fennel to be found on the plate. Just a small amount of puree under the fish. "

  • "One of the owners was even pouring our wine and taking our order. The food was a little hit or miss. My boyfriend got the shrimp appetizer which was really just so-so, but I got the salmon appetizer and it was delicious."

  • "We went for brunch and ordered the donuts and eggs Benedict. Donuts were delicious but that was about it. The eggs were cold and the egg whites weren't cooked. The server barely spoke to us. Much better places for brunch - don't bother going here."

  • "I was looking for something different with a variety of menu items for varied tastes - but really interesting foods prepared creatively. It wasn't a large menu, for example for main dishes there were bison, several fish, duck, and chicken. Then, there were interesting soups and salads, interesting combinations of vegetables, dressings, and sauces. I had the duck liver pate which was excellent and also the rabbit rillettes. My guests had the Scottish salmon with a risotto. The risotto could have been a little softer with more liquid."

  • "A place I frequent in dams organ was closed...where to go? A friend suggested CASHION'S....it was superb...so much so I met anther friend there a week later. You will NOT be disappointed in any way!"

  • "I like Cashion's as there menu is fresh daily and their food is often inventive. For example, the avocado with pink grapefruit and a balsamic reduction. You wouldn't think it could work, but it does. Really friendly staff, nice environment. Sometimes there is a miss, but worth the risk. They do need to change their music which is stuck in Motown heaven."

  • "The food was just okay and for the price not worth it.The staff was very inflexible to our group celebrating a graduation "

  • "We booked a birthday brunch at Cashions, none of us three ever having dined here. We enjoyed a wonderful, rainy, spring afternoon dining on great food, drinks, and desserts. The staff was friendly and we were able to dine at our leisure. We never felt rushed."

  • "This was my first visit and I was pretty impressed. Our server was helpful with recommendations and explanations about the menu. I went with the duck broth appetizer and the salmon, and both were tasty and well presented. The outdoor seating on Columbia is also nice. "

  • "We were there for brunch. The menu seemed limited and I was especially struck by the lack of toast or bread. Barely toasted English muffins were all they had to offer. The server was attentive but didn't hover. The atmosphere is quietly hip and, in contrast to earlier reviews, they've got soundproofing built in to reduce any noise bouncing around the room. The food was thoroughly cooked and locally sourced from nearby farms but not very inventive. While I cleaned my plate, I won't be back right away. Still, it was good food and a great introduction to the Adams Morgan area for my dates who joined me. Thumbs up!"

  • "While once in awhile a dish may miss (the fish soup on Saturday was one such dish), Cashion's is always excellent. The greek spreads and bread are wonderful. And the salmon dish was fabulous."

  • "We went out for brunch - we had the croque madame and the chicken hash. They were ok but will not blow you away. I liked the hash better... at first I expected something like huervos ranchero but it had a very interesting flavor. There definitely were some issues between the wait staff and the kitchen as multiple parties sat and ate and left while we were waiting. The restaurant is nice inside. The mirrored walls make it feel bigger than it was. They did comp us a mimosa for the delays in the food coming out. Oh yeah - the donut was so-so... they were having issues with the fryer. The cinnamon roll was ok."

  • "We had come here for dinner a few yeras back and didn't have a good experience. We tried Cashion's again because we needed a brunch spot near Columbia Heights. We were delightfully surprised! The food was delicious. Everything wsa fresh and well crafted. Portions were good-not huge! The service was relaxed but attentive. Very nice neighborhood brunch."

  • "Our party ordered four dishes and two were fish. All the entrees were divine but the two fish dinners were exceptional. Service was amazing. Four stars because the appetizers were not terribly yummy & were a tad greasy. Desserts were also OMG good."

  • "I finally made it to Cashion's Eat Place! After hearing about how good it is for 20 years, it is definitely worth the trip. The local rockfish was really delicious, and the prep was perfect."

  • "I've only been once, and our waitress was ok. Also, we were not addressed by any of the 3 staff members less than a foot from us at the host stand as we walked out. Not a big deal, but it's something I tend to notice. It shows how much they value your business. The food, however, was very good, and well prepared. I liked that they supported local farmers, and the freshness showed when I dug in. For brunch, I like bigger portions, because... well, it's brunch. You are combining 2 meals into one essentially. That being said, the portions were a bit small. Then again, the prices suited the portion and ingredients, so I was not disappointed. I should just have ordered more. My date and I cost $36 with 2 waters. Not bad at all. "

  • "Granted it was Easter Sunday, but the restaurant wasn't full, so I am not sure why the service was so slow and poor. We ordered donuts and cinnamon buns to share but no additional plates were provided so we each had sugar sprinkled all over the table in front of us. We occasionally had to seek out our server and dishes were just placed on the table were there was room. Please note that drinks go on the right side of the diner. The brunch was fine. I really enjoyed my Bloody Mary. However, I was disappointed that our out of town guests were underwhelmed. I would recommend it to friend's because the rest of the restaurants in Adams Morgan are so middling, but I would like it to up its game. "

  • "The food was very good as usual. However, the service was not the greatest. The server appeared overworked and trying to take care of too many tables. There was confusion when we received one appetizer instead of the four we ordered. When we asked the person who brought the appetizer (not the original server), he said the appetizer 'was for the bread". When the orignal server finally showed up, we asked her about the other 3 appetizers and she replied that she thought we only ordered one appetizer (for four people !!). Since 1/2 hour had passed, we told her to just bring the main course. Remainder of the evening was fine. "

  • "Another wonderful meal at Cashion's. We don't eat out as much as we used to, but Cashion's is one of our favorites, and it was even worth the trek across the river through Cherry Blossom chaos. Halibut was perfect. Special thanks to Justin for his wine recommendation."

  • "A favorite of my wife and I, we hadn't been back in a few years, it's still very good - the food is interesting, the appetizers and starters are maybe more interesting than the main dishes, but it's all good. I had bison steak main dish which was very tasty and included excellent veggies, sauce, and starch. From what I remember, prices have gone up - I used to compare a lot of new restaurants to Cashion's and thought the new ones were too expensive and not worth it compared to what you could get at Cashion's - now Cashion's seems to have adopted the new pricing structure, but I do think the experience and food are worth the price. Service is excellent, drinks provided right away and are exactly what you asked for."

  • "Food was great - portions were small. It would have been great if the menu (or the server) recommend we order sides with the entrees. The description of the dinners indicates sides come with them. That being said, the food was excellent. We would have ordered more food after our entrees, but the service was SO slow, we couldn't stand to wait anymore."
