Diner Reviews
  • "This is our favorite place to go to in Mt. View. We always try something new and the food never disappoints. Great place to go with another couple and share plates. The wine and cocktail selection are plentiful. Great place to seat outside when it is not windy or cold."

  • "I have taken two out of town visitors and they were all very impressed with the food, wine and atmosphere. Interesting food and the very act of sharing plates added to the fun of the evening."

  • "I had lunch outside with a friend. We shared the tapas platter which was good. Service was slow. Had to ask for water twice and rarely saw our waiter. It is a great location, festively decorated so the ambience is really good."

  • "A must, the seafood paella - medium-hot spicy please!! everything perfect to "share" with a few friends...."

  • "My friend and I go out to lunch weekly in the San Jose area, and she suggested we try Cascal in Mt. View after having been there for a weekend lunch. She knew we should try the mushroom empanadas right from the get-go and they were incredible as starters. The manchego cheese perfectly complimented the mushrooms and light pastry that flaked instantly upon biting...wonderful texture and mind-blowing taste. The seafood paella and chile relleno were delightfully flavorful and we topped it off with an order of sizzling shrimp that were cooked to perfection. The noise level was a little daunting for a lunchtime but I figured that was related to the fact that it was jammed on a Wednesday! What a gem! We'll be back!"

  • "I was excited to compare the tapas here to the tapas I recently had in Spain... Sadly, I was very dissapointed. The food had no flavor and seemed very bland. The best part of the meal was the bread and olive oil tapanad they gave you. Not a place I'll come back to."

  • "Planning to go to Spain! Lunch at Cascal gave a preview taste of tapas! A fun and tasty experience."

  • "Always a grand slam. Food is absolutely 5 stars (I'd give them 6 if I could). Can't wait for my next trip to Cascal."

  • "Went on a Thursday night but it was busy and happening. We shared the tapa samplers, which has some hits and some misses. On a previous visit I loved the mushroom empanadas. Wish we had ordered that instead."

  • "First got seated in the back corner right next to a big table of 15 to 20. It was my birthday and wanted a little more private feel. I asked the waiter if he had another table and the only table was right at the front door. He then re-seated us at a table for four. I thought that was exceptional, considering they are a very popular and busy restaurant. They surprised me with a dessert with a candle. The only thing that was a little confusing was that they charged us for the dessert they brought with the candle. We didn't really mind since we were going to order dessert, but, if they are going to charge us, I would have liked to order what I wanted. The wait staff were all VERY nice considering how busy they were."

  • "We tried the lamb meatballs, assorted mushrooms, and fried calamari and shrimp dishes for a quick tapas lunch. The bread came with a tasty dipping sauce of olive oil, herbs, garlic and lemon for a satisfying accompaniment . The calamari and shrimp was a generous portion mixed with fried bell peppers and came with a spicy aioli dipping sauce. We'd return given the opportunity for a more leisurely meal."

  • "It was no special occasion besides a double date. But, it sure did feel it was a special event. Beautiful people all around smiling enjoying the food, drinks, music and a energetic staff doing what they do best. People pleasers. Everything was in perfection. My wife and I enjoy going for every special occasion and last minute dinning. It's always makes me happy when we enjoy the food at Cascal. Eduardo"

  • "I have been here many times and have thoroughly enjoyed each visit. Great food and wine options, as well as great service. Will definitely be back!"

  • "Great place for lunch on a busy day, but better make a reservation. Once seated service is prompt and efficient. Hardest part is what to choose among the many wonderful tapas. We let our waiter suggest and had some wonderful dishes -- brussel sprouts, almondigas, scallops, prawns ... all were excellent. Portions are quite hearty, considering you expect "small dishes"."

  • "This is a happy restaurant, and the menu has many items that promise to be delicious. Sadly they fail in execution, at least most of the items our table picked. We went at lunch, maybe the cooking improves in the evening. Very popular place, absolutely full on the day we went."

  • "Perfect ambience and the live music was fantastic."

  • "Been here a few times and the food seemed better during happy hour in my previous visits, during Friday night dinner at peak hours, the food didn't seem as good but still good. Service was attentive and friendly."

  • "Paella is a must-try. Absolutely delicious. Drinks were a bit watered down but tasty."

  • "Had lunch w/my parents here. Great ambience! Nice variety on menu. The waitress was not the friendliest. She took orders and had bit of an attitude. She messed up my order and I had to wait for my dish a little longer. The food was fantastic it just would have been a better overall experience if the waitress enjoyed her job. Despite her attitude we will mostly likely return because the the food was on a high level."

  • "Great tapas in Mountain View - food is always consistent and even when it is really busy, the service is good and the food is quick."

  • "Cascal has a great location on Castro St. in Mountain View, close to the performing arts center. Pleasant place to sit outside, eat acceptable quality Mexican food, and sip tasty sangria."

  • "We were celebrating a 50th birthday, had a great lunch."

  • "Cascal is the perfect place to enjoy a dinner with a large group and sample a variety of dishes. Happy hour is every Mon - Fri from 3:30-6:30 but you must sit at the bar (which usually fills up quite quickly). There is plenty of outdoor seating and heat lamps outside! My favorite taps are the lamb chops, braised pork belly, mushroom empenadas, and hearts of palm salad. Paella here is great, my favorite is the paella cascal followed by the paella a la marinera. These are big portions and great for sharing. The Asado is great to share too. You get a sample of steak, pork belly, lamp chops and some veggies."

  • "The food and service are well above average. The various tapas are among my favorites, and the Pisco Sour is a most delicious cocktail! It is on the noisy side, so beware of that, especially for older folks. It's tough to hear your conversation at times. If you don't mind the noise level, you will not be disappointed. The food is amazing."

  • "Generally a decent Tapas restaurant. The food is pretty good, but overpriced. They have live music that is enjoyable, but way too loud for a restaurant of their size. It is quite difficult to converse with the music going and will make me think twice next time. The seviches are very good and recommended if you brave the cacophonous background music."

  • "We had a fabulous time out with friends. Cascal's food and service were both outstanding. We certainly recommend this to anyone interested. Start with a pitcher of the red sangria!"

  • "The food was delicious! We loved the sangria, but what we enjoyed the most was the promped and professional service. Thank you for a wonderful evening! Look forward to going back for more."

  • "They have a wide variety of tapas that are by and large well prepared and tasty. Have eaten there several times and have always been pleased with our overall experience although there is some slight variation in our favorites from one time to the next"

  • "Wonderful food, great service but from the other side of the dining room from the band, we weren't able to hear eachother. Good music but so incredibly loud! We had the short ribs, the gorditas, and the chili reyanllo (sp). Delicious! The waiter was attentive and funny and we had a good time, but there was no conversation save for when the band took a moment between songs."

  • "This place is kind of trendy but the food is terrible, the noise level is high, and the service is bad. The prices are way out of line with the quality: high prices, low quality food. The stuff I ordered came out of a can. I do not recommend this place."

  • "This is one of my favorite restaurants in Mountain View. It's a great place for lunch or dinner with music. You can sit outdoors and enjoy the bay area weather all year around."

  • "Always have such a fabulous time here. The only negatives are that I wish it wasn't so noisy and the diners next to me weren't so loud. Overall the food is superb, drinks are good and the staff is amazing!"

  • "I always had entrees here but decided to try the small plates instead this time. I asked our server for some recommendations and the choices were very good. I am definitely coming back soon and eager to try some of the other small plates I missed. Great service and ambience as well."

  • "We have been here several times and the food and service are always great! my friend loves the vegetarian options. we came here once for happy hour and it was fun but needs more seating in bar area. We love the mushroom eppanadas. Love the patio area too!"

  • "This is the second time we have dined at Cascal. Both of our experiences have been good. The South American fare was interesting, not at all like the typical Mexican restaurant. The cerviche and paella was tasty and enough for both of us; we had no room for dessert. Service was good and our host complied with our request to be seated in a relatively quiet area."
