A word from Casa Romero
After 40 years, my customers still tell me what a delightful discovery it is to step out of a Boston alley and into the heart of Mexico. That is exactly what I had envisioned when I decorated the coffered door and walls of my restaurant with the bright Talavera tiles from Puebla, Mexico. Casa Romero is located in the midst of glamorous Back Bay at 30 Gloucester and offers the best traditional Mexican food in Boston.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Casa Romero is one of my favorites. I can't keep myself from ordering the chilies rellenos . They are just too good. But the rest of our party had enchaladas verde and a shrimp appetizer dish that were each fabulous. Everything I have eaten there is well prepared and delicious."

  • "The restaurant is gorgeous. The was ok. I got the vegetarian enchiladas with verde sauce. I've had way better verde sauce and I was disappointed that the tortilla they used was corn. I thought the standard was flour tortillas. My sister did not enjoy her chicken enchiladas for this reason. The shrimp flautas are delicious and so is the guacamole. The perfect margaritas are not so perfect. Strange taste to it"

  • "It was okay for one dish and the second dish we ordered, the port in orange citrus sauce was overcooked, rubbery and too sweet. We left most of it untouched. The server was nice but seemed overwhelmed by a large party and too many table."

  • "Food was very good, but a little expensive for what you get ($8.50 for guacamole)... Entry feels a little weird since it is in the ally, but don't be discouraged, it is bright and colorful inside. A little more casual than the Newbury Street establishments - which is nice if you want low-stress, but still want to get out for some socialization. Very busy on a Saturday night, but we had reservations and they sat us promptly. Will likely go back or recommend to friends so enjoy if you go!"

  • "we frequent this restaurant and always order the same things. it's more upscale mexican, rather than your typical mexican joint, so its a great change and tastes much more fresh and authentic. we go at least once every few weeks."

  • "I understand that Boston is an expensive city but I really could have gotten better food at Chipotle of Qdoba. Service was very slow, had to ask for water several times. Very Very pricy for not a lot of food."

  • "This was my first visit to this restaurant. The food was good, but I have had better Mexican fare elsewhere. The service was slow and we had to ask several times for missing items. I would go back if others in my party wanted to return, but I would not rush back."

  • "Casa Romero is arguably the best Mexican food in Boston. The restaurant is small but really comfortable, with an air of authenticity to it. The margaritas are deelish, albeit just a bit weak. The food is well-prepared, and the menu ranges from common to obscure dishes. The house specialty, puerca adobada (pork in an orange-chipotle sauce) is outstanding. Great service just made the night that much more enjoyable. Try it out!"

  • "I had high expectations and thought the experience would be better. I would not go back. It was just average and too expensive for average ."

  • "Casa Romero is my go-to Back Bay restaurant. Enter through a little square door in the alley and then the space opens up into a fairly large basement restaurant. Great margaritas and sangria. Chips and salsa and guac to start and then it's hard to go wrong on their menu. I will say I've never had any seafood dish there so cannot speak to those. I've tried almost everything else and have had great meals across the board. Standbys include the enchiladas poblanas and the huarache de filete de res. Finish it off with a Mexican coffee. Great for 2-6 people. Best place in the Back Bay."

  • "I really like this place. Try their "Perfect Margarita". Excellent guacamole appetizer to start. The pork tenderloin with orange sauce is great."

  • "We have been here before and usually love the food. The guacamole was delicious as usual, but the portions are much smaller than they used to be. The chicken enchiladas were good, but made with mostly dark meat. I have got tend the vegetarian in the past and they are much better. Great drinks overall. The skinny margarita was much sweeter than I'm used to. Overall, good dining experience. I will return."

  • "The food was good and the service was okay. However, the bus staff hovered during our entrees, my side dish was taken before I was done, and a drink was taken before being finished. I waited for the others to return from the restrooms before leaving. During these few minutes, the owner came over and said to me, "Another party is waiting for the table." I was so embarrassed. I have never been moved along so quickly, especially at a restaurant where I'd spent so much money - over $200 for 3 peopole - in so little time - a little over an hour. It was unreasonable and, in my opinion, very unprofessional. I will never return and I will most definitely tell my family, friends, and acquaintances to steer clear of this restaurant."

  • "This is the second time I've visited Casa Romero and it was nothing short of delicious. Staff: friendly and on top of this device and never left us waiting Food: was delicious and enough to keep you full I would recommend visiting but if you're going on a Fri or Sat then I would highly recommend reservations."

  • "Went with a larger party. The table was ready which was great since it was a Friday night and everywhere in the area is busier. The drinks were great but would recommend the margaritas over most of the other mixed drinks including the Sangria - which is usually my favorite. The Pomegranate margarita was awesome! Dinner- was ok. most everyone enjoyed their dishes but the 2 that got seafood dishes agreed that it was not the best tasting. Not sure if it was the seafood itself or just the spices used to cook it. It was not horrible by any means- just as far as seafood enchiladas, it was definitely a bit meh. The pork and beef dishes though were delicious!"

  • "We have been to Casa Romero several times and it never fails to disappoint. The food is authentic and always delicious. Atmosphere is festive. Be sure to make a reservation on weekend nights."

  • "Basically just high quality, well prepared Mexico City style Mexican cuisine, heavy on Moles and other good sauces. Loved the PRIX FIX valentines dinner, the portions where perfect for a couple of small apetizers and a 'bring some home' main course. Dessert was a little lacking, since I have a hard time getting excited about Flan and my dates cheesecake was made to resemble flan."

  • "I normally like this restaurant but on valentines day they couldn't get it together. The servers had no idea where they were going with the food. They came by our table at least four times with the wrong food. I would say the limited valentines menu was just ok. I definitely wouldn't go again with a preset menu. I don't know if the level of disorganization was because of valentines day, but it took a long time to get the correct course to the table"

  • "We love this restaurant for its food and ambience, but the service was less than perfect. Water glasses took a long time to get refilled, and there were other small snafus: one margarita was requested with salt, which was missing. Finally, there were no complimentary chips with salsa. (This was Valentines' Day, and they were offering a prix fixe menu that evening.)"

  • "Was a definite disappointment. Hadn't been to this restaurant in many years - it was one of our favorites. Not any more. Food was not up to par."

  • "It has a great menu, atmosphere and service. Can be a bit noisy (sort of more than energetic on account of the brick walls); however, worth going."

  • "My husband and I were staying in Boston for the weekend and remembered dining here with friends several years ago. We were pleased to find they are still thriving just off Newbury. The food is very good and decor is authentic and provides a cozy atmosphere. Restaurant employees and owners are personable, adding yet another positive."
