A word from Casa Oaxaca
In 2007, we opened Casa Oaxaca in Washington, D.C., a traditional restaurant that brings the flavors and colors of Mexico to the capital city of U.S. Our main objective is to give Washingtonians a better exposure to the richness and diversity of Mexican cuisine. At Casa Oaxaca, mole sauces are our specialty and we have six types that you will be able to taste with chicken, beef, seafood or tortillas. Continued

  • "I have been going to Casa Oaxaca for six years now, and I find it to be the best and most authentic place for Mexican food, particularly from the regions of Oaxaca and Puebla, which is where mole sauces are from. Most recently, I went to Casa Oaxaca on Mexican Independence Eve (September 15th). I was really looking forward to having some good Mexican food to celebrate the occasion with friends. As always, Casa Oaxaca did not disappoint. I ordered the season special and Mexican national dish "chile en nogada"--which is a remarkably difficult dish to prepare--and it was simply outstanding, I almost licked my plate clean. I will definitely will be going back every year to get my fill of this seasonal dish."

  • "Our waiter was great. Since it was our first time there and my friend asked a question about the moles, he brought out a plate with all of the mole's and some tortillas for us to try them. They were all good. And the plate was so nicely presented. I ended up ordering ceviche instead of mole, but the food was great."

  • "I decided on this spot as a late dinner date night option. My boyfriend and I arrived at 9 pm and we promptly seated. Although, it did take several minutes to take our order our waiter answered all questions and actually asked us to wait a few minutes and he would bring all the moles for us to try! They were all really delicious. I settled on the vegan mole with ribs. My meal was amazing! The pace was very slow, however for a night on the town with someone that I enjoyed the conversation, it was welcomed! The waiter ended up being great and personable. We will definitely go back."

  • "It was our first time at this conveniently located establishment on the southern end of Adams Morgan - but it won't be the last. The service was prompt and attentive throughout the meal. The marguerites were perfectly made, as was the freshly made guacamole. But the highlight was the various moles available. I chose the tres moles over grilled chicken breast and all three sauces were rich and flavorful, without overpowering the perfectly cooked chicken. This will definitely be on our list of very high quality Mexican restaurants."

  • "The staff at Casa Oaxaca could not be any nicer. They are so accomodating, polite and attentive. I've eaten there many times and have never had a less-than-perfect experience. Their brunch is the perfect hangover cure, as well as a little slice of home cooking for Mexicans in DC. Their drinks are generous and the food is flavorful, filling and inexpensive. Aces all around."

  • "I was visiting DC with my vegetarian boyfriend and his picky-eating friend. I, myself, don't eat meat, but will occasionally eat fish. This was the most authentic Mexican food I've had on the East Coast ever! We started out with the queso dip with your average expectations. The dip was phenomenal, so far above the typical queso I've had anywhere else. This was spicy, and so flavorful. They served this with chips and warm salsa, which at first I thought would be gross, but was actually spectacular!! I ordered the fish tacos which were outstanding. Fresh corn tortillas and tons of vegetables and flavor! My boyfriend got the veggie tacos and they were amazing as well. His friend ordered the lamb tacos and was very impressed."

  • "The food here is just OK as far as Mexican brunch fare. The service was really slow, though, esp. for a Sunday when you would expect there to be a large brunch crowd. It took a really long time for our server to bring us our check, and when he did he ran the wrong card! If you don't live in this neighborhood, I would not recommend this place."

  • "Went for brunch for a friends bday. There was one server for about 15 tables of four. We were seated before at least 30 mins before our drink orders were taken. The waiter was completely indifferent about the inconvenience and was not knowledgeable about the menu. Luckily the food was amazing otherwise the whole outing would have been a bust."

  • "We were somewhat disappointed with our return visit. First, only the low-ceiling downstairs was open. It's below ground level and noisy. We made our reservation through Open Table and although we were told it would be recorded, that was not done. The ceviche and tortilla soup were excellent, but the main course tacos (pork and skirt steak) were rather bland. Not as satisfying as our prior visit, and we are Oaxacan foodies having spent several months there."

  • "Most Americans don't realize how diverse Mexican cuisine actually is. To find a restaurant - in Washington DC of all places - that specializes in Oaxacan cuisine including mole is a rarity! Most "mexican" restaurants in the USA are Tex-Mex, which I happen to love, but Casa Oaxaca is a very nice change. I love the chicken mole, the queso fundido, and the tortilla soup. Absolutely delicious! I plan to keep coming back for more and plan to tell all my friends about this place."

  • "this was a very enjoyable meal; much better Mexican food than many other DC spots. Our reservation was at 7:30 and they were able to seat us early but a little later and the restaurant was pretty crowded. With the crowd it got loud downstairs but by that time we were done eating. All in all, I would recommend Casa O for the good food and good service. If you are going to eat here, avoid the downstairs back corner tables due to poor lighting. We didn't sit there but I saw the young folks sitting there have to get out there phones to light up the menus."

  • "The food here is fantastic. I am a vegan but my wife is not. Both of us found food we absolutely loved: pink mole for me, plantains and black mole for her. The atmosphere here is a bit downscale compared to the price. It's not dirty or sketchy or anything like that. It's just not a very nice, polished restaurant. The staff was friendly though, and I definitely plan on returning."

Lovely and lively service, delicious food, fun artwork. The menu was different than just your typical tacos and everything we tasted was yummy-- even the grasshoppers!   • "Came here for Mother's Day brunch. I really wish their brunch menu had been published online. If you are vegetarian/vegan (I, and my dining partners, are fiercely carnivorous) their $30 unlimited mimosa/food deal will probably be great for you. The brunch menu is essentially just egg dishes, which is, in my opinion, not worth it. We all ordered off of the regular menu. Service was lacking, but not horrible or unfriendly. Just one guy waiting all of the tables and tending the bar it seemed...so he seemed a bit out of it. They also neglected to check me in for my reservation. So I just got one of those "you're a no-show" emails from Opentable. TL;DR - I wouldn't return for brunch. Dinner, maybe? But it wouldn't be my first choice."

  • "We found this Adams Morgan Mexican restaurant to have stellar service but just good, not great food, for the price. A agave margarita is $12 and meals run about $19, which is high for the fare. We started with Kekas, which were the highlight of our meal and a bargain at the happy hour price of $5. The Mole Verde Con Costillas De Purerco (ribs) were dry and flavorless. The Enchiladas De Camaron Y Queso De Cabra was above average. In short, we find this establishment a good place to take advantage of 1/2 price appetizers (beware - the list is short) and drinks."

  • "Our first visit started off a little shaky, I must say. It took way too long to get a drink. I'll be honest, get me a drink right away and I can relax and enjoy the ambiance, people watch a gander at the menu happily forever. Once our karaft of deliciously mixed margaritas arrived all doubts vanished. Soon after our apatizers of squash flower raviolis with creme fresh and black bean-filled plantains were before us and were catapolted to Oaxacan heaven. The waiters and bar folk were pleasing. My main course of carnitas tacos with pickled red onions and pineapple salsa made my tummy do leaps and bounds of joy. I'd avoid this place if I were you! Cheers!"

  • "We loved the Rellenitos de Platano Macho, the the Enmoladas, and the Ravioli de Huitlacoche. However, be warned that the last too are very big appetizers, so that you will be pretty full after eating them. The shrimp enchiladas and the Mole Coloradito were also superb. Our waiter was super: he was funny and helpful, bringing us a sampler of all of the moles, which really helped us to make our choices."

  • "Chose this spot for our out of town Valentine's Dinner as we are both big fans of mole and Oaxacan food. The restaurant, upstairs was beautiful and comfortable, we were bought to a table on the lower level which we found more claustrophobic and very loud. They accommodated us easily with a table upstairs when we asked. The food was as good as most of the food we had in Oaxaca. The tortilla soup was the bet I ever had. My tamale was excellent."

  • "The mole was delicious! We were pleasantly surprised to find the food just as goos as we remembered it to be in Oaxaca. A+ The place got crowded quickly after 7:30, so we know it's popular with the locals at least. Good for young crowds. If you are there with older parents, go on the early side as it can get noisy very quickly when the margaritas start flowing. Ask to be seated towards the back if you prefer a quieter spot. The mole coloradito with the flank steak was amazing. Wish this place was close to home in NYC."
