A word from Casa Oaxaca
In 2007, we opened Casa Oaxaca in Washington, D.C., a traditional restaurant that brings the flavors and colors of Mexico to the capital city of U.S. Our main objective is to give Washingtonians a better exposure to the richness and diversity of Mexican cuisine. At Casa Oaxaca, mole sauces are our specialty and we have six types that you will be able to taste with chicken, beef, seafood or tortillas. Continued

  • "Festive colors, great vibe, super great staff, and good sangria. We went for brunch and were disappointed. The portions were small and it was all "ok". The sauce on the chilequiles and the house made habanero sauce were outstanding and that's the best thing I can say. I don't love cheese so this doesn't bother me as much as it might have for others. You couldn't find the Oaxaca cheese, and I actually think they forgot it. The corn bread was great but tiny. The egg & steak was ok but small. The potatoes my husband wanted was almost not visible. Slight tweaks would make it shine."

  • "The ambiance is nice, as I really like small local restaurants. It has a nice neighborhood feel. The food was ok, but I was surprised that with a $19 order of steak fajitas, I received only 3 small fajitas, and was charged extra for cheese & sour cream. Thank goodness I didn't ask for guacamole! If the food is in some way exceptional, customers will worry less about value, but this was not the case. I won't return."

  • "I like this restaurant because it's actually traditional Mexican food. I never knew about the Moles and there are so many to choose from. The odd experience was the service. Our server started with asking us if we'd been here before. Two of us no, our third yes. The server said to us, "oh good since you've been here you can explain the different Moles bc it's busy tonight" - paraphrasing but essentially it. There were only three other tables; maybe it was busier upstairs. Anyway, we were shocked and laughed. The hostess made up for it by describing the moles - yummy. Overall the server just seemed very distracted. If you're looking to try it, food is good just be patient."

  • "This was our second visit, we returned in honor of the Day of the Dead and their special menu. In a word it was awful. The traditional stewed chicken dish had no flavor and was served cold. I sent it back, it took time for replacement. Still no flavor. Eduardo took the meal off the bill. Offered us pumpkin flan. The night fell flat and it never recovered. We will not return. First visit was fun, they were attentive, offered mole tastings. Excited about their plans for the holidays but they did not execute."

  • "The food is better than most DC mexican restaurants. Their specialty is mole, which is quite good. My only real complaint is that they only accept 3 credit cards when you go to pay, which is utterly ridiculous because all that's necessary to split a check more than 3 ways is the server's willingness to pull out a calculator and quickly do the math. So you can't come here with a group unless you're willing to put up with that."

  • "The food here was authentic, unique, and very well prepared. They created interesting combinations of flavors that were overall quite successful. The grasshoppers were savory and unusual, the pink mole was delightfully spicy and different, and the best dish of the night was the huitlacoche ravioli, which had a delicious sauce and great flavor. Service was a bit slow but not unpleasant. Overall we had a nice experience and really appreciated the extensive vegan menu."

  • "LOL, it was chilly outside and very warm inside, a tad too warm in fact! Stuffy! Very busy and crowded, but that is almost always a good sign! Been here a few times so already knew I would love the place, and did again. Tried a different mole dish and was not disappointed at all. Wish I had time to try them all, maybe they should offer a sampler plate on the menu!"

  • "I made our reservation for 6, called an hour before asking to change the reservation to 8... and then we showed up with 9 people... and they had no problem accommodating us. They immediately took drink orders and had margaritas out within minutes. Our server was great. He offered to give us a sampling of all of their mole sauces to help us to decide which item to buy off the menu. The food was amazing! What a find."

  • "Had a great dining experience! The food was wonderful - be brave and try the crickets! The margaritas with the salt bubble were wonderful - best I have had in DC. Wonderland for the tequila enthusiast - lots of varieties of tequilla flights. Staff was great was suggestions and manager was great checking in and adding his insights and suggestions. He convinced us to try the crickets and they were actually wonderful!"

  • "I have been going to Casa Oaxaca for six years now, and I find it to be the best and most authentic place for Mexican food, particularly from the regions of Oaxaca and Puebla, which is where mole sauces are from. Most recently, I went to Casa Oaxaca on Mexican Independence Eve (September 15th). I was really looking forward to having some good Mexican food to celebrate the occasion with friends. As always, Casa Oaxaca did not disappoint. I ordered the season special and Mexican national dish "chile en nogada"--which is a remarkably difficult dish to prepare--and it was simply outstanding, I almost licked my plate clean. I will definitely will be going back every year to get my fill of this seasonal dish."

  • "Our waiter was great. Since it was our first time there and my friend asked a question about the moles, he brought out a plate with all of the mole's and some tortillas for us to try them. They were all good. And the plate was so nicely presented. I ended up ordering ceviche instead of mole, but the food was great."

  • "I decided on this spot as a late dinner date night option. My boyfriend and I arrived at 9 pm and we promptly seated. Although, it did take several minutes to take our order our waiter answered all questions and actually asked us to wait a few minutes and he would bring all the moles for us to try! They were all really delicious. I settled on the vegan mole with ribs. My meal was amazing! The pace was very slow, however for a night on the town with someone that I enjoyed the conversation, it was welcomed! The waiter ended up being great and personable. We will definitely go back."

  • "It was our first time at this conveniently located establishment on the southern end of Adams Morgan - but it won't be the last. The service was prompt and attentive throughout the meal. The marguerites were perfectly made, as was the freshly made guacamole. But the highlight was the various moles available. I chose the tres moles over grilled chicken breast and all three sauces were rich and flavorful, without overpowering the perfectly cooked chicken. This will definitely be on our list of very high quality Mexican restaurants."

  • "The staff at Casa Oaxaca could not be any nicer. They are so accomodating, polite and attentive. I've eaten there many times and have never had a less-than-perfect experience. Their brunch is the perfect hangover cure, as well as a little slice of home cooking for Mexicans in DC. Their drinks are generous and the food is flavorful, filling and inexpensive.   • "I was visiting DC with my vegetarian boyfriend and his picky-eating friend. I, myself, don't eat meat, but will occasionally eat fish. This was the most authentic Mexican food I've had on the East Coast ever! We started out with the queso dip with your average expectations. The dip was phenomenal, so far above the typical queso I've had anywhere else. This was spicy, and so flavorful. They served this with chips and warm salsa, which at first I thought would be gross, but was actually spectacular!! I ordered the fish tacos which were outstanding. Fresh corn tortillas and tons of vegetables and flavor! My boyfriend got the veggie tacos and they were amazing as well. His friend ordered the lamb tacos and was very impressed."

  • "The food here is just OK as far as Mexican brunch fare. The service was really slow, though, esp. for a Sunday when you would expect there to be a large brunch crowd. It took a really long time for our server to bring us our check, and when he did he ran the wrong card! If you don't live in this neighborhood, I would not recommend this place."

  • "Went for brunch for a friends bday. There was one server for about 15 tables of four. We were seated before at least 30 mins before our drink orders were taken. The waiter was completely indifferent about the inconvenience and was not knowledgeable about the menu. Luckily the food was amazing otherwise the whole outing would have been a bust."

  • "We were somewhat disappointed with our return visit. First, only the low-ceiling downstairs was open. It's below ground level and noisy. We made our reservation through Open Table and although we were told it would be recorded, that was not done. The ceviche and tortilla soup were excellent, but the main course tacos (pork and skirt steak) were rather bland. Not as satisfying as our prior visit, and we are Oaxacan foodies having spent several months there."

  • "Most Americans don't realize how diverse Mexican cuisine actually is. To find a restaurant - in Washington DC of all places - that specializes in Oaxacan cuisine including mole is a rarity! Most "mexican" restaurants in the USA are Tex-Mex, which I happen to love, but Casa Oaxaca is a very nice change. I love the chicken mole, the queso fundido, and the tortilla soup. Absolutely delicious! I plan to keep coming back for more and plan to tell all my friends about this place."

  • "this was a very enjoyable meal; much better Mexican food than many other DC spots. Our reservation was at 7:30 and they were able to seat us early but a little later and the restaurant was pretty crowded. With the crowd it got loud downstairs but by that time we were done eating. All in all, I would recommend Casa O for the good food and good service. If you are going to eat here, avoid the downstairs back corner tables due to poor lighting. We didn't sit there but I saw the young folks sitting there have to get out there phones to light up the menus."
