A word from Casa Oaxaca
In 2007, we opened Casa Oaxaca in Washington, D.C., a traditional restaurant that brings the flavors and colors of Mexico to the capital city of U.S. Our main objective is to give Washingtonians a better exposure to the richness and diversity of Mexican cuisine. At Casa Oaxaca, mole sauces are our specialty and we have six types that you will be able to taste with chicken, beef, seafood or tortillas. Continued

  • "We found this Adams Morgan Mexican restaurant to have stellar service but just good, not great food, for the price. A agave margarita is $12 and meals run about $19, which is high for the fare. We started with Kekas, which were the highlight of our meal and a bargain at the happy hour price of $5. The Mole Verde Con Costillas De Purerco (ribs) were dry and flavorless. The Enchiladas De Camaron Y Queso De Cabra was above average. In short, we find this establishment a good place to take advantage of 1/2 price appetizers (beware - the list is short) and drinks."

We even enjoyed the grasshoppers which they graciously prepared to our preferences- plain with dipping sauce on the side. We dined early so that they were able to cater to our large crowd.   • "We loved the Rellenitos de Platano Macho, the the Enmoladas, and the Ravioli de Huitlacoche. However, be warned that the last too are very big appetizers, so that you will be pretty full after eating them. The shrimp enchiladas and the Mole Coloradito were also superb. Our waiter was super: he was funny and helpful, bringing us a sampler of all of the moles, which really helped us to make our choices."

  • "Our first visit started off a little shaky, I must say. It took way too long to get a drink. I'll be honest, get me a drink right away and I can relax and enjoy the ambiance, people watch a gander at the menu happily forever. Once our karaft of deliciously mixed margaritas arrived all doubts vanished. Soon after our apatizers of squash flower raviolis with creme fresh and black bean-filled plantains were before us and were catapolted to Oaxacan heaven. The waiters and bar folk were pleasing. My main course of carnitas tacos with pickled red onions and pineapple salsa made my tummy do leaps and bounds of joy. I'd avoid this place if I were you! Cheers!"

  • "This place was a great Valentine's Day dinner find. I originally ordered the beef fajitas but the waiter recommend another beef dish and he did me a favor. It was delicious and everything else that came on the plate was great too. I'll go back."

  • "Chose this spot for our out of town Valentine's Dinner as we are both big fans of mole and Oaxacan food. The restaurant, upstairs was beautiful and comfortable, we were bought to a table on the lower level which we found more claustrophobic and very loud. They accommodated us easily with a table upstairs when we asked. The food was as good as most of the food we had in Oaxaca. The tortilla soup was the bet I ever had. My tamale was excellent."

  • "The mole was delicious! We were pleasantly surprised to find the food just as goos as we remembered it to be in Oaxaca. A+ The place got crowded quickly after 7:30, so we know it's popular with the locals at least. Good for young crowds. If you are there with older parents, go on the early side as it can get noisy very quickly when the margaritas start flowing. Ask to be seated towards the back if you prefer a quieter spot. The mole coloradito with the flank steak was amazing. Wish this place was close to home in NYC."

  • "We discovered this restaurant thanks to a discount coupon, and the meal was absolutely delicious. Mole is the specialty, and my husband and I ordered the coloradito (with steak) and the amarillito (with chicken). Both were amazing, and the guacamole appetizer was one of the best I've ever had. Even without the discount, the prices are very reasonable for DC. We'll definitely be heading back for more."

  • "DC has plenty of restaurants serving "Mexican" food, but most of the restaurants specialize in Salvadoran cuisine that offer a Salvadoran take on Mexican OR they are chain restaurants. Casa Oaxaca is a standout because it is authentic and Oaxacan cuisine is unique that you rarely find anywhere in the US. The menu offers many intriguing items that are approachable at the same time. Plus, the margaritas are banging! The service is very friendly and accommodating notwithstanding the near capacity crowd, CO often seems to have. I think Casa Oaxaca is a DC Gem because it offers high quality, interesting cuisine at a very affordable price. It's accessible in taste and location. And everyone needs chocolate in their lives."

  • "DC is just not known for its Mexican food. After coming from Phoenix, it has been a real disappointment not to be able to find any great Mexican. I love mole, and as it is a regional dish, not all Mexican joints serve it. A Mexican referred me to this place, and I was not disappointed. Great mole! Great service"

  • "A co-worker suggested we try this restaurant and it was wonderful. They let you sample each of the moles they make there, I believe 7 of them, before you order. Our waiter Angel was honest and spot on with recommendations. The drinks were good, the food was excellent (best Mexican food I have had in DC) and the price is right."

  • "Food was good, but not anything exciting. Drinks were not good. Really actually lame for a Mexican/Spanish restaurant to not know how to do a good margarita. So, that was actually disappointing. No chips were brought to the table until I asked. Our table was changed after being seated. They seemed to be having trouble overall figuring out seating. Just not really impressed. Too many options out there (especially for the price range) that just doesn't put their food/menu/service/ambiance at a competitive level."

  • "This is, hands down, not just the best Mexican food in the DC, but the best food in DC. The menu is creative, delicious and wholesome. There are plenty of meat and fish dishes, but also vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. My husband and I are big foodies- but I have a whole list of weird eating restrictions- this place never fails to disappoint. The staff, from the managers-bar tenders- and waiters, are always energetic and flexible. Great find."

Nice ambience, friendly enough staff. but there was nothing special about the food. the chicken was dry and the various mole sauces we had were, as advertised, different from each other, but did not really have strong distinctive tastes. sauces a bit thin. ordered soup that never came. drinks were okay."

  • "This was my third time to Casa Oaxaca. I ordered different items each time and every one was incredible. All of their moles are great, but their Black Mole is one of the best thing sauces I’ve ever had. The Huitlacoche Ravioli in Squash Blossom Cream Sauce is my favorite appetizer and the Guacamole is some of the creamiest and most flavorful that I have tried. They also have a large number of vegan and vegetarian options to go with their extensive steak, chicken and fish options. The mole on the vegan enchiladas is complex and delicious. They also make great sangria and have a full bar."

  • "For those who like Mole sauce, this is the place to go. They have several variations and all of the ones we had were very good. My wife had the Mole Poblano on the enchiladas which is the traditional Mole most people are used to, and was excellent. I had the Tres Moles on chicken breast; green, black and red, all of which were very good. The black was like traditional Mole, but I'm not sure I'd really consider the green and red Moles per se, but they were very good none the less. A lot better than the usual salsa verde or typical Mexican red sauce. They don't give you free chips and salsa, but we really didn't miss them."

  • "We were a group of 5 people here for a birthday dinner. The downstairs is not that big but they were very accomodating. The service was great, drinks were good and the food was pretty tasty. I've had better mexican food but it was worth the money. I'd recommend this restaurant and will visit again if I was in the neighborhood."

  • "This place was quite good. Their 7 types of mole sauce are definitely their claim to fame. However, if you're craving comfort food Tex-Mex, this isn't the place. Nothing is smothered in cheese and enchilada sauce. It's definitely on the healthier, more authentic Mexican side, which is great, as long as that's what you're looking for."

  • "Not having much mole to base this experience off of, i'd say it was a good start! We started with guacomole, which was delicious, as well as the kekas. I got tres moles, which was really delicious! The green mole was my favorite. My boyfriend got the ribs, which were also pretty delicious. I'd definitely go back when craving Mexican."
