Diner Reviews
  • "First time at this place and was meeting a colleague for lunch. Arrived early so I sat at the bar where a friendly bartender waited on me. When my colleague arrived the bartender offered to transfer the tab. The waiter was helpful and made some suggestions. My colleague is a vegan and they made modifications to accommodate her needs. Food was exceptional, Risotto was perfect and sincere is was my first visit the Maître de stopped by twice to check on us and brought us sample dessert on the house. Couldn't have been better. Highly recommend!"

  • "May be July 5 was an off day for the kitchen (and the surely waiter) but most of the dishes we had were mediocre at best. July 5 is the restaurant's "birthday" and the menu stated that special food and drinks would be featured but this was news to the wait staff as none were available. The branzino was quite good and well prepared while the monkfish was not. We ordered the ravioli which the waiter recommended as one of the best dishes on the menu and were greatly disappointed. The sauce that accompanied the ravioli was thick and had a strong objectionable taste that masked the taste of the ravioli. The two deserts were quite good.Overall, a great disappointment and a proof that high cost does not necessarily mean great food."

  • "I was looking forward to trying out this restaurant based on reviews but was left underwhelmed. My salad had great ingredients but was unbalanced, and the pasta was under-seasoned, and not flavorful. Something was lacking in the execution. The same went for all of my friend's dishes. Service was uneven, but the hostess was quite solicitous in the end, which was a welcomed gesture. I hope that it was just an off night for the restaurant."

  • "The food is indeed excellent, but the service is what earns this restaurant five-stars. The staff is most attentive yet discreet. I have dined there with friends twice over the past two weeks, and both hostesses recalled our preferences and unpretensiously offered recommendations. Both times we were served complimentary appetizers; the first time an "amuse bouche," the second a full cutting board of excellent "fumerie" and cheeses. A lovely place to dine for a reasonable price."

  • "I am a Trabocchi fan, like Fiola very much and just had had a marvelous brunch at Fiola Mare. So scheduled a birthday lunch for myself at Casa Luca. Having just returned from cooking class in the Piemonte region of Italia I was looking forward to a return to amazing Italian food. The aroma in my risotto fiori di zucca with pork was amazing and the risotto portion of the dish with zucchini pieces and pork was fragrante and tasty with fab aromas. The blossom however had not been fried correctly so it oozed oil into the risotto. I explained my disappointment to one of the staff who came to the outside tables and unasked took it off the bill! Highly recommend great food and also because that was a great reaction to my note to CL."

  • "We love the food in Casa Luca, but this time we were not completely satisfied with the service. Our waiter seemed scattered-- it took repeated requests to get an extra spoon and some questions answered. In addition, he mispronounced some key Italian words, among them the name of Casa Luca's chef/owner!! Perhaps the wait staff would benefit from some quickie Italian lessons?"

  • "Food - great! Service - outstanding! Wine - delicious! And we were sitting in an area of the restaurant where we were comfortable and could hear each other without yelling. We will definitely return ....."

  • "Went with my 15 yo son who was not feeling too well. Waiter and manager thought he was not eating what he ordered because he did not like it so they brought him an additional dish. They kept coming over to check on us. Service was great...food excellent."

  • "Our group loved everything about Casa Luca. The house cocktails were great. My gnocchi was incredibly good. My son-in-law had the lamb and gave it rave reviews. The best Italian restaurant we've eaten at in years!"

  • "After four trips to Casa Luca I feel very confident in recommending it. Reminds me of meals I had in Tuscany. Only fresh, high quality ingredients. Sophisticated but not stuffy, beautiful decor. Staff seemed to mesh together calmly for excellent service including Josue and manager Sarah. The lamb shoulder was cooked perfectly, the burrata melts in your mouth, and the appetizer Luca Antipasto Misto is always different and delicious. Gather at the bar first and enjoy!"

  • "Limited menu and many dishes have funky ingredients. Why is it that so many restaurants these days are adding strange animal parts and other weird things to their dishes? The food was very good and the service was the best in DC. Portions were generous. If only it had simpler dishes it would be a real winner."

  • "Choosing what to eat from this fantastic menu proved daunting, so with just two of us, we elected to maximize our options by choosing small plates and portions of pasta. We were rewarded handsomely. The small plates of cherries, stracciatella and toasted hazelnuts; grilled corn, prosciutto and mint; and mixed salad of stone fruit with radish, pine nuts and robiola d'alba were fresh off the farm and beautifully paired. The pastas of fusilli with burrata and pepper, pappardelle "telefono" and trenette nero were perfectly prepared, and featured simple but glorious flavor combinations. With a wine list that included several selections of surprisingly strong $28 wines, we shared a special night out without feeling guilty about the price."

  • "It's a pleasure whether in the back room or the private front room to see the family pictures of this notable chef and his wife's early pictures in Italy and Spain respectively. The staff is well trained and bring food that delights the taste buds. Attention is paid to every detail. I'd eat there weekly if I lived in the District."

  • "I heard such great reviews about Casa Luca and couldn't wait to go - especially because I just moved into the neighborhood and it's less than 2 blocks away! Well, the caesar salad was to die for. Ordered a bottle of the house red wine and it's fabulous! Then came the mixed grill dinner for two. I'm not sure what made it soooooo salty, but it overtook everything - the sausage, beef, lamb, you name it. Because I tried every item in the mix, I felt uncomfortable sending it back. Perhaps you just shouldn't order this dish and will have better luck with the other items on the menu."

  • "We came here as a party for five with two adults and three children to celebrate my son's eighth birthday. It was a perfect choice, but would have been equally great for date night with my husband. The house manager Josue was fantastic! He customized dishes for the children with no question, and provided such great insight into the meals and the restaurant that we felt like we were at a chefs table. Food was amazing-authentic Italian was great seasonal flavors. We'll be back!"

  • "Very disappointed with the food quality. Too much butter in everything to the extent that your food swims in butter. Just the look of the dish killed my appetite. Very unfortunate since I had read good reviewes and thought that I have discovered a new good place in DC. I do not recommend it. "

  • "Great food. Great service. Really nice gluten free selection and the best gluten free pasta I've ever had in a restaurant. My only complaint is that it's always a little bit too loud. I take clients here often for business lunches and the music volume in the front part of the restaurant is a bit too loud for a business conversation. It's not as bad in the back room. "

  • "From the antipasti to the dolci, Casa Luca never disappoints. Twice now, I've gone to Casa Luca after work with friends for a quick drink and maybe an appetizer. Both times the starting course was so lovely we stayed on for dinner. And we were so happy we did! Don't forget the affogato at the end - you won't be sorry! And to top it all off, the service is impeccable."

  • "Had a wonderful meal with my family. Gnocchi with duck was just wonderful. Hazelnut dessert was delish and enough to share a taste for the group. Reasonably price wine selections. A convenient walk from Convention Center hotel. Service was superb too!"

  • "I love this restaurant, but I am always a bit taken aback by the lunch bill. Two small plates, two entrees, two desserts, two espresso...$119 with tax and tip. And I had the least expensive entree. But the food is wildly good. Roasted tomatoes, pesto, balsamic, burrata...beautiful simplicity. The Porchetta Tonnato was dazzling...a porchetta-style treatment of rabbit sliced paper thin atop a creamy tuna sauce. Lovely raw spring veggies with a scattering of deep-fried capers. A fruit salad of strawberries and stone fruit with a scoop of delicious strawberry ice cream. I will go here again and again. They do offer some reasonably priced lunch alternatives, but I couldn't resist trying that rabbit. "

  • "Casa Luca provides a wonderful lunch experience. The food is delicious and service is impeccable. The restaurant can be a bit lively for close conversation, but is well suited for a business lunch. Favorites are the caprese salad with a burratta that melts in the mouth. The branzino is also a favorite - cooked to flaky perfection on a tender bed of greens. A Fall favorite not on the summer menu is a small pot of cabbage seasoned with hearty bacon - a small plate that is a meal in itself. Portion sizes are just right for weight conscious patrons - enough to fill but not enough to overwhelm. Food should be celebrated and Casa Luca reflects Chef Fabio Trabocchi's love of fresh, seasonal ingredients. "

  • "We started off slowly with it taking over 10 min to get water and nearly20 after ordering to get drinks/wine. Appetizer Luca Antipasti Misto platter was over served with grilled bread(tasty) and under served for 5 with meats and cheese. Waiter should have said only serves 2 or 3. Entrees were exceptional. We fell off the service radar after that. Took nearly 30 min and 3 tries to get check. "

  • "The food is excellent. They have great items to share. The service is very good--very attentive!! The ambience is nice...a little noisy sometimes and some of the tables/chairs are uncomfortable. Worth the price, which is not much! They give you plenty of food and all of it is pretty darn incredible. Best Italian cuisine I have had in the DC-area. But, generally, the place is excellent and I will go back there again and again."

  • "Met my son at Casa Luca for dinner. I am a regular and wanted him to try it. It was my first time dining outside...such a lovey evening. The service was spotty...not as good as in doors. There was little attention paid to detail and more casual. We both enjoyed the food. The wait time for drinks was long. Our main courses were served and no flatware. I asked the busboy for a fork and he pointed the waiter.....not appropriate to make diners sit with a plate a food in front of them and no utensils. Service was a bit disappointing but will go back for the great food."

  • "I took two out-of-town foodies here for dinner; the three of us were delighted with our selections---all different. For an appetizer we ordered the antipasto that the menu stated was for 2 or more, and it was more than sufficient. The pasta dishes were outstanding, and the filet mignon was done perfectly. My guests were impressed. The two down sides were the noise level (there was a large group near us) and an inexperienced waiter. I will definitely return to this restaurant."
