Diner Reviews
  • "We had a "pasta tasting" – with half portions of all the delicious, varied homemade pasta dishes. Each was tasty but the melt-in-your mouth gnocchi & heavenly gnocchi were true standouts."

  • "My husband and I were visiting DC and search for an Italian restaurant close to our hotel and Casa Luca was first on the list. The place was okay, we didn't dress up for dinner since we just came back from our tour. The place is beautiful but the tables are too close to each other that you can hear the conversation of the people sitting next to you. The food was okay but a little bit pricey for the serving size, menu is limited. We were not happy with the waiter, he didn't come and check on us during the course of dinner, but he did to the other 2 tables next to us. Overall, not happy."

  • "I have been at Casa Luca in all seasons but I think in the Summer when they match their menu to the season beautifully, I think my favorite. Their food is absolutely excellent but also the presentation, the colors- the deep red of the peach, dark green of the avocado is more pronounced than at other spots. This time sat outside, and I note even at fine restaurants in the city, the level of service decreases when you sit outside. At Casa Luca the other day, the service was excellent. There are lots of good Italian restaurants in this town at the moment, but Casa Luca is a "Gem"."

  • "Service was friendly and attentive. The food was great - pasta cooked perfectly al dente and dishes were traditional, but also had a unique element and flavor mixed in to make it more modern. One of the best Italian places I've been to in DC."

  • "This was only our second time for dinner here but certainly won't be our last! Another rare break from summer heat and humidity allowed us to sit outside which was delightful. My husband had the caeser salad, which is a different take on the ordinary caeser , very unique and delicious. I had the heirloom tomatoes with stracciatella and pesto, wonderful! Entrees were the Branzino for him and the pasta puttanesca for me. The fish was cooked perfectly and presented beautifully, my pasta was perfect. We had the same server as before, Diaz, who is fantastic! Very knowledgeable, professional, and a delightful personality. We also talked quite a bit to the manager Josue who is very interesting, a hard working young man that does whatever it takes."

  • "The house-made pastas are superior, as are the seasonal starters. Ambience is bright and pleasant --not cozy, with outdoor seating. Service was helpful and personable. One mistake was that the second course arrived before we had finished the first, which us reeled rushed. Without a word from us, the staff responded smoothly with on-the-house 'cellos. We will be back."

  • "Noisy, decent food, service a little lacking... Atmosphere was noisy- seems the trend though. Food was pretty good- we had a free app b/c they needed to move us, and the app was AWESOME actually. Wish I knew what it was! The Gnocchi was good- a "bit" bland and a "bit" too soft and squishy, but good. The meatball app was great, the other food was great. Service was a bit lacking, and almost seemed bugged we were there. Not forgot about, but left wondering how to get a refill, etc. Wouldn't shy away from a future visit, wouldn't go out of my way though either."

  • "Dishes tantalize your taste buds. Extravagant ambience with an extremely affordable cost. Outstanding service, absolutely gorgeous restaurant and bar. Love this gem."

  • "The food here was amazing. We did family style for most of our dishes and it was very good. The wine was also deliscious. I recommend this place."

  • "Overall, I rate Casa Luca with 4 stars. I have frequented the restaurant for lunch, but the other night was our first dinner reservation. It was a Saturday and the restaurant was quite busy. The food was very good, but what was troubling me as I reflected on the evening was how the waiter (who was very nice, helpful and courteous) seldom visited our table once our order was taken. I felt - where was the follow-up? Don't get me wrong - there was good overall service by others, but I had to ask for a big spoon for my pasta after I was told it was coming and I had to ask for parmesan cheese. These are little things, but I noticed them and it led me to my original question - what role does (or should) the waiter play with his customers?"

  • "Some of the best of both I've had in DC. High quality ingredients and some interesting twists. Warm, helpful, and extremely flexible--friendly but not smarmy. Also not oppressively loud like so many restaurants, though we did go early."

  • "First time at this place and was meeting a colleague for lunch. Arrived early so I sat at the bar where a friendly bartender waited on me. When my colleague arrived the bartender offered to transfer the tab. The waiter was helpful and made some suggestions. My colleague is a vegan and they made modifications to accommodate her needs. Food was exceptional, Risotto was perfect and sincere is was my first visit the Maître de stopped by twice to check on us and brought us sample dessert on the house. Couldn't have been better. Highly recommend!"

  • "May be July 5 was an off day for the kitchen (and the surely waiter) but most of the dishes we had were mediocre at best. July 5 is the restaurant's "birthday" and the menu stated that special food and drinks would be featured but this was news to the wait staff as none were available. The branzino was quite good and well prepared while the monkfish was not. We ordered the ravioli which the waiter recommended as one of the best dishes on the menu and were greatly disappointed. The sauce that accompanied the ravioli was thick and had a strong objectionable taste that masked the taste of the ravioli. The two deserts were quite good.Overall, a great disappointment and a proof that high cost does not necessarily mean great food."

  • "I was looking forward to trying out this restaurant based on reviews but was left underwhelmed. My salad had great ingredients but was unbalanced, and the pasta was under-seasoned, and not flavorful. Something was lacking in the execution. The same went for all of my friend's dishes. Service was uneven, but the hostess was quite solicitous in the end, which was a welcomed gesture. I hope that it was just an off night for the restaurant."

  • "The food is indeed excellent, but the service is what earns this restaurant five-stars. The staff is most attentive yet discreet. I have dined there with friends twice over the past two weeks, and both hostesses recalled our preferences and unpretensiously offered recommendations. Both times we were served complimentary appetizers; the first time an "amuse bouche," the second a full cutting board of excellent "fumerie" and cheeses. A lovely place to dine for a reasonable price."

  • "I am a Trabocchi fan, like Fiola very much and just had had a marvelous brunch at Fiola Mare. So scheduled a birthday lunch for myself at Casa Luca. Having just returned from cooking class in the Piemonte region of Italia I was looking forward to a return to amazing Italian food. The aroma in my risotto fiori di zucca with pork was amazing and the risotto portion of the dish with zucchini pieces and pork was fragrante and tasty with fab aromas. The blossom however had not been fried correctly so it oozed oil into the risotto. I explained my disappointment to one of the staff who came to the outside tables and unasked took it off the bill! Highly recommend great food and also because that was a great reaction to my note to CL."

  • "We love the food in Casa Luca, but this time we were not completely satisfied with the service. Our waiter seemed scattered-- it took repeated requests to get an extra spoon and some questions answered. In addition, he mispronounced some key Italian words, among them the name of Casa Luca's chef/owner!! Perhaps the wait staff would benefit from some quickie Italian lessons?"

  • "Went with my 15 yo son who was not feeling too well. Waiter and manager thought he was not eating what he ordered because he did not like it so they brought him an additional dish. They kept coming over to check on us. Service was great...food excellent."

  • "Our group loved everything about Casa Luca. The house cocktails were great. My gnocchi was incredibly good. My son-in-law had the lamb and gave it rave reviews. The best Italian restaurant we've eaten at in years!"

  • "Choosing what to eat from this fantastic menu proved daunting, so with just two of us, we elected to maximize our options by choosing small plates and portions of pasta. We were rewarded handsomely. The small plates of cherries, stracciatella and toasted hazelnuts; grilled corn, prosciutto and mint; and mixed salad of stone fruit with radish, pine nuts and robiola d'alba were fresh off the farm and beautifully paired. The pastas of fusilli with burrata and pepper, pappardelle "telefono" and trenette nero were perfectly prepared, and featured simple but glorious flavor combinations. With a wine list that included several selections of surprisingly strong $28 wines, we shared a special night out without feeling guilty about the price."

  • "After four trips to Casa Luca I feel very confident in recommending it. Reminds me of meals I had in Tuscany. Only fresh, high quality ingredients. Sophisticated but not stuffy, beautiful decor. Staff seemed to mesh together calmly for excellent service including Josue and manager Sarah. The lamb shoulder was cooked perfectly, the burrata melts in your mouth, and the appetizer Luca Antipasto Misto is always different and delicious. Gather at the bar first and enjoy!"

  • "Limited menu and many dishes have funky ingredients. Why is it that so many restaurants these days are adding strange animal parts and other weird things to their dishes? The food was very good and the service was the best in DC. Portions were generous. If only it had simpler dishes it would be a real winner."

  • "It's a pleasure whether in the back room or the private front room to see the family pictures of this notable chef and his wife's early pictures in Italy and Spain respectively. The staff is well trained and bring food that delights the taste buds. Attention is paid to every detail. I'd eat there weekly if I lived in the District."

  • "I heard such great reviews about Casa Luca and couldn't wait to go - especially because I just moved into the neighborhood and it's less than 2 blocks away! Well, the caesar salad was to die for. Ordered a bottle of the house red wine and it's fabulous! Then came the mixed grill dinner for two. I'm not sure what made it soooooo salty, but it overtook everything - the sausage, beef, lamb, you name it. Because I tried every item in the mix, I felt uncomfortable sending it back. Perhaps you just shouldn't order this dish and will have better luck with the other items on the menu."

  • "We came here as a party for five with two adults and three children to celebrate my son's eighth birthday. It was a perfect choice, but would have been equally great for date night with my husband. The house manager Josue was fantastic! He customized dishes for the children with no question, and provided such great insight into the meals and the restaurant that we felt like we were at a chefs table. Food was amazing-authentic Italian was great seasonal flavors. We'll be back!"

  • "Great food. Great service. Really nice gluten free selection and the best gluten free pasta I've ever had in a restaurant. My only complaint is that it's always a little bit too loud. I take clients here often for business lunches and the music volume in the front part of the restaurant is a bit too loud for a business conversation. It's not as bad in the back room. "

  • "Very disappointed with the food quality. Too much butter in everything to the extent that your food swims in butter. Just the look of the dish killed my appetite. Very unfortunate since I had read good reviewes and thought that I have discovered a new good place in DC. I do not recommend it. "
