Diner Reviews
  • "Very competent front desk staff. Can't say the same about the wait staff. Difficult to get anyone's attention. The food is only fair. The drinks are better. Not sure even after eating that I got what I ordered and no one to ask before it got cold. Young crowd and the bar looked like fun."

  • "The atmosphere was fantastic. They had a live band playing inside. My friend and I sat outside and it was a bit hard to see as the only lighting was the candle. The food was good and even better when our server remembered the sauce. The only bad aspect was our server. Hardly ever saw him. Our drinks, water, and food were finished for quite sometime before we were able to track him down. I will visit again in hopes I have a better server."

  • "Cool area of town. Outdoor seating is nice. Good fresh, some not too heavy Mexican Food. Unique menu items too (mango habeñero quacamole as an example - yum!)"

  • "We sat outside in the perfect spot for a couple and were then forgotten...Our drinks were finished, we had gotten earlier at the bar, and we had no water, we were finally asked to order and we didn't receive our chips and salsa until the food was almost there. We never received the guacamole we had ordered. Then it took forever to get our check. We had hoped to listen to the live music but by 9:35 the band still hadn't started. I really liked the atmosphere, the restaurant has a lot of potential. I think maybe our waiter was having an off night...We will try again another time. The Food was Great!!! Enjoyed the Canal Walk afterwards..Great location."

  • "Service was great food was overpriced, small portions. Was more fit to brunch portions"

  • "Excellent restaurant with a beautiful view of the canal. Each time I go, the quality of food and service is always the same!"

  • "Everything was great about this restaurant. We have been here a few times and the food, atmosphere, and service are normally too notch, we got unlucky this time with a very unattentive server. We had to track him down just to get some water at the beginning of the meal and then track him down to get our bill. The food was excellent as expected though!"

  • "Had the occasion to visit Casa Del Barco on an overnight trip to Richmond, VA. Nice refreshing explosion of flavors with the different dishes we ordered. The empanadas were crispy and flaky and the house-made salsa's were truly delightful. We will definitely return on our next visit to the area to experience some of the other culinary delights. Warning: Finding the restaurant can be tricky since it is next to the canal and off-street. Ask the locals when you get to the approximate area. Validated parking is available."

  • "I have been to Casa del Barco before and every time I have been there it has been a great experience from the time you step in, clean restaurant, host to sit you, to fine dining and the waiter always been so pleasant. The reservation to a lunch birthday celebration was superb! I will surely returned."

  • "Everything was great. Only complaint was when we called to make a reservation for that Friday night, the girl asked if it was our first time and we said yes. Well it would have been nice if she told us you offered Valet parking since we had to park 6 blocks away. When I mentioned it to the hostess when we arrived she wasn't very interested . Besides that we loved the restaurant."

  • "We sat outside on the patio for lunch on Sunday and it was perfect! Beautiful day, view, good and service. I love that the chips come in a personal basket for each person at the table!"

  • "We had a farewell lunch for a colleague here. The staff was very detail-oriented. We loved the ambiance and the food was delish."

  • "Essentially an overpriced and massively under portioned chipotle. I had the braised pork shoulder and it was nothing to brag about. The matgaritas were OK. Appetizer was good, desert had an extreme amount of cayenne in it and i could not finish it due to pain (i have grown up on cajun and indo cuisine)."

  • "Food was great. Started with guac and queso, I got the free range chicken fajitas and they were great. Very well seasoned. Definitely make sure you try the salsas they bring with the food. The cactus one was definitely my least favorite. But the other two were great! Live music on Saturday night at least which was nice, but a little too loud at times. "

  • "We've been coming to Casa Del Barco since it opened just over a year ago. It is a beautiful restaurant in a great location with a first class tequila bar. I the past, however, we have found the food to be a little inconsistent. Recently they have undergone some menu changes and some streamlining. Last weekend had an outstanding brunch. Our guests raved about the Mexican chocolate sauce on the waffles, the chipotle bacon, and the guacamole and I really enjoyed the fresh take on the Avocado Queso Fresco Omlette. The real test was last night's dinner. All the food from appetizers to Mexzookie desert (which was amazing) was delicious and well-prepared. I can finally recommend this restaurant as a top notch dining experience."

  • "I love Casa del Barco. I have been twice, and both times the food and service exceeded my expectations. We had a party of 4, and we sat on the patio this last time. They have a nice tent outside if you prefer to sit in the shade, and umbrellas at most of the other tables. You have a great view of the Canal and of the local artwork that emblazons much of downtown Richmond. Great ambiance indoors and out! The food is fantastic. All of it is prepared from scratch on a daily basis. The Mango & Habanero guacamole is to die for, not super spicy. We had the vegetable enchiladas, barbacoa tacos, chicken taco salad, and the yucatan cobb salad. All of the dishes were well received with lots of oohs and aahs! We love it and will return!!"

  • "Was seated 15 minutes late with a reservation. Once we were seated, took 7 minutes before a server came over to introduce themselves and take our order. Server was new but seemed to have to be reminded to refill the empty tea glasses a couple of times. Food was good, good choice of salsas. Queso and guac were great."

  • "Salsa makes or breaks a Mexican restaurant, and the salsa here was meh. The guacamole was tasty, and the fish tacos were very good - but I can say that about other RVA eateries, too. Basically, there wasn't much to make me want to bypass other places for this one. Again, everything was fine. But just."

  • "When the billis going to be above $100 for 4 people( ours was $113 + $25 tip(our guest paid the tip) I would expect the service to be Number one. Took (Zack) 3-5 mins just to greet the table, no water no chips no hello. Too long. Had to ask for more chips, when we ordered guac/w tom & bacon and queso w/chorizo. Obvious need. Needed more water, no return unless asked. Needed silverware, had to ask. Needed salsa with the tacos, never came, even when we asked. Beautiful resturant, smelt smoking from patio(did not like), great seating. My Del Barco Marg was not good, did not finish. For the money, I would not return. Service was bad, prices were high, rice was over cooked by 9pm. I had the taco special, it was good, nothing over the top."

  • "Not so happy with the menu change. My chicken fajitas dd not come w lime and any cheese which is a little strange. Food for our group was ok. Old menu was better and we were seated next to a group of about 30 but even before they arrived we could not hear each other talk. It is a really loud restaurant every time we have gone it has been that way unless we sat outside which is wonderful with the canal views. Nit sure if we will go back anytime soon. "

  • "It was our first experience after hearing so many great things about Casa Del Barco! Everything that we heard was true, the food, ambience - fantastic! The chorizo empanadas were especially tasty! I love the idea that they called prior to the reservation to ask if we wanted guacamole waiting at our table when arrived, which we order the mango habanero and almost ordered another bowl, it was so good. Will definitley be on our list of restaurants to take our out of town guests. Also, loved the prickly pear margartia! If there was anything to complain about, it was that the entire meal took only about an hour. They are very efficient, but I am also guessing they like to turn tables. Would have liked to linger a bit longer. "

  • "My fiancé and I tried it out for dinner on a Thursday night. The restaurant is an awesome and unique venue! I'd recommend it for dates, friends or even a bachelorette outting. It's in the heart if Richmond, right off the canal and across from other great venues. The staff is accommodating and friendly!"

  • "Had a very enjoyable dinner here with my wife this Tuesday. This place can be difficult to find but worth the extra effort. It's situated on the canal locks which are tucked in between several buildings that house condos, apartments and restaurants. A cool section of town populated by young professionals and upstart companies. We grabbed a booth in the bar area and took advantage of the numerous specials; Margaritas, empanadas, tacos, etc. which were all very tasty. The empanadas were almost flaky which was much better than others I have had at other restaurants. We had four different fillings in ours; pulled pork, mushrooms, chicken and chorizo. Yum! We moved onto the tacos and especially enjoyed the shrimp tacos."

  • "This is the third time we have been here. We keep giving it another chance bc we enjoy sitting outdoors. But once again, and for the last time, we were disappointed in the food and service. Never again."

  • "We had friends from out of town visiting. Casa has amazing Guacamole and we wanted to share. The noise level was perfect. We could chat without feeling like we were screaming at each other over the noise but we didn't feel like everyone else could hear our conversation. Our waiter was excellent. Great timing. Made good recommendations and was attentive without being annoying. The food was on time and delicious. The Sangria was really delicious..."

  • "The drinks were amazing, and the ambiance was lively and fun. Unfortunately our food was just ok...but I think it is because the service was slow. I ordered my Ribeye medium rare and it came WELL DONE. All of our appetizers arrived before our first drink, which isn't ok when you are spending that much money on the food. I'll definitely visit there again, but just for the drinks, probably not the food."

  • "Our first visit to Casa del Barco was a good introduction to the restaurant. The service was excellent, helpful and caring but not overbearing. The food was very good; had we more experience with Mexican-oriented dishes, likely the food would be rated higher. The four in our party enjoyed a tasty meal. We will certainly return, hopefully to find an empty space on the outdoor patio waiting for us when the weather moves toward spring and summer!"

  • "We got a great deal at Costco: two $50 gift certificates to this restaurant for $59.00....what a deal! The food was great and the place was hopping. We will certainly be going there again! The food was creative and freshly made. They start you off with freshly made chips, salsa and spiced sour cream dip. The bacon guacamole was great as an appetizer. The rice bowl combinations were very tasty ans well as the chicken tacos. Two tacos are enough and the chicken was very tender. The tres leches cake was a bit on the small side for $8.00, but very tasty! See you there!"
