Diner Reviews
  • "This is the third time we have been here. We keep giving it another chance bc we enjoy sitting outdoors. But once again, and for the last time, we were disappointed in the food and service. Never again."

  • "We had friends from out of town visiting. Casa has amazing Guacamole and we wanted to share. The noise level was perfect. We could chat without feeling like we were screaming at each other over the noise but we didn't feel like everyone else could hear our conversation. Our waiter was excellent. Great timing. Made good recommendations and was attentive without being annoying. The food was on time and delicious. The Sangria was really delicious..."

  • "The drinks were amazing, and the ambiance was lively and fun. Unfortunately our food was just ok...but I think it is because the service was slow. I ordered my Ribeye medium rare and it came WELL DONE. All of our appetizers arrived before our first drink, which isn't ok when you are spending that much money on the food. I'll definitely visit there again, but just for the drinks, probably not the food."

  • "Our first visit to Casa del Barco was a good introduction to the restaurant. The service was excellent, helpful and caring but not overbearing. The food was very good; had we more experience with Mexican-oriented dishes, likely the food would be rated higher. The four in our party enjoyed a tasty meal. We will certainly return, hopefully to find an empty space on the outdoor patio waiting for us when the weather moves toward spring and summer!"

  • "Favorite downtown spot. Great food, easy parking, scenic view, great atmosphere, and reasonably priced. Bloody Mary bar on Sundays is fantastic."

  • "We got a great deal at Costco: two $50 gift certificates to this restaurant for $59.00....what a deal! The food was great and the place was hopping. We will certainly be going there again! The food was creative and freshly made. They start you off with freshly made chips, salsa and spiced sour cream dip. The bacon guacamole was great as an appetizer. The rice bowl combinations were very tasty ans well as the chicken tacos. Two tacos are enough and the chicken was very tender. The tres leches cake was a bit on the small side for $8.00, but very tasty! See you there!"

  • "What a great spot in Richmond. Had great service and fantastic food. Would say the only downside was the drinks were very expensive and not that great."

  • "1st time there. Service was fine. Took awhile to get a server (in all fairness it was a Saturday nite & they were swamped!). She was very friendly. Fish tacos were good but not memorable. Empanadas were out of control. Great atmosphere but loud. Great drink selection. Parking anywhere in downtown Richmond is horrible regardless of time. Will return but try something different and perhaps a wee bit earlier. Perhaps the deck will be open when the weather warms up."

  • "Grayson was an excellent Server! He was knowledgable about all the dishes, prompt with service, and enthusiastic. His recommendation of the the Tequila Flight ordered was very enjoyable as was the variety of Margaritas and beers. I am so appreciative of Aly, the Restaurant Manager for her personal interaction with my guests, special table decor and desire to make our dining experience top-notch! It was superb, relaxed evening."

  • "We celebrated my husband's birthday with friends on a Friday night and had a great time. Our booth was comfortable and roomy, and the food was delicious. Our only complaint was about the parking. Casa del Barco will validate parking, but only at the Troutman Sanders parking garage. This detail should be made clear on the website. Otherwise we would highly recommend Casa del Barco as a great venue with delicious food and a fun atmosphere."

  • "We love this place! We can go out on a regular mountain bike ride and then follow up at Casa Del Barco for some delicious Mexican fair and terrific tequila options!!"

  • "Too bad the restaurant is so hard to get to because the margarita was one of the best in town and the food was wonderful. The margarita was fabulous, made with fresh lime juice and I requested it be "skinny" so no agave syrup was added. It was perfect! The homemade guacamole was the perfect blend of avocado, jalapeños, tomatoes, onions and salt....I loved it. The fajitas were good but wish I had ordered the pork recommended by our server. I would go back there if it weren't so hard to find a place to park. We were not able to get into the riverside parking deck so had to find street parking. When the weather is better, it will be fun to sit outside on the canal."

  • "My hubby and I decided to try Casa Del Barco for a belated Valentines dinner date. Totally worth it! The quac was a delicious start to our meal. Hubster had the Steak fajitas and I had the portabello mushroom soft tacos. The drinks were great too- Blackberry Basil Margaritas and mango habenaro. We both look forward to going back and will highly recommend it to our friends."

  • "It is not a restaurant for children! no kids menu - It is very dark no changing table in the bathroom for babys. The music is no good."

  • "Atmosphere is cool with their brick walls and decor. Selection of margaritas and tequila are extensive. They have a nice selection of local craft beers. Food is very good. Their salsa and chips are fresh."

  • "The experience was good overall. Next time, I would go back on a Friday or Saturday evening when the atmosphere is more lively. I went on a Sunday evening and it was quiet and slow. For being so slow, it took a long time for us to get our food. The food was good, but a little expensive for how much you actually got. It was hard to eat my 2 shrimp tacos, because the corn tortilla got soggy and completely collapsed. The salsa and white dip were amazing before dinner though. The salsa was so fresh."

  • "Although it is a bit difficult to find this restaurant down on the canal walk, when you get there it is bright, energetic and well stocked with every mexican drink on the planet--I never saw so many bottles. we dined at the bar on a very slow day and had excellent food and drink and service. Folks in Richmond should flock to this place--it is really good!"

  • "My wife and I recently visited for her birthday. We arrived early and caught the happy hour specials of margaritas and tacos. Problem beign we were stuffed before the dinner arrived, and with the tasty dishes, we ate till packed."

  • "Service was excellent. The drink menu was extensive with several different options for tequila. I had one of the margaritas and it was good, but definitely not a traditional margarita. Food was good but some ingredients seemed out of balance. There was a little too much lime in the guacamole, too much cilantro in the rice. The calamari special was very good. Overall it seemed a fun place to go for a date or night out with friends."

  • "I guess Casa Del Barco isn't our type of mexican food everyone liked the cheese dip and guacamole but really didn't care for the main entrees that we had. I guess you never know until you try it. We will be back to enjoy some cocktails and the atmosphere."

  • "Had a fun and tasty Sunday brunch experience with a party of six. We made reservations but the place was mostly empty the whole time we were there (guess people haven't heard about the $10 mimosa carafes yet...) which was fine. Our server was timely, knowledgable, and attentive to all of our needs and the food was delicious. Our party split 2 large guacamoles (the traditional was my favourite) and each ordered off the brunch menu and were so full by the time we waddled out with our doggy bags in tow. Will absolutely be back!"

  • "Food was great and servers were attentive, but server forgot to enter our food and then our sides came 15 minutes after our entrees. Also, they started removing silverware as we were still using it. Good was great though."

  • "The food ordered - fish taco, steak tacos, barbacoa steak enchiladas, chorizo empanada, calamari appetizer and fried ice cream were all tasty in their own way. The portions were generous each coming with a side of beans and rice along with cabbage slaw. The empanada was a tad overcooked. The fried ice cream was the big hit with the lone teen at the table. The drink menu was roughly three times the size of the food menu with the Tequila menu being the largest in Richmond. You get the distinct feeling the food exists in order for them to serve drinks. That said, the drinks were inventive in their flavor combinations sometimes hitting the mark, sometimes not. Would recommend for a fun night out with friends."

  • "Tucked away in a newly gentrified area of downtown, CdB is a gem! The food was excellent, innovative with generous portions. One new entree was succulent & delicious: pork tenderloins. We also had a simple, clean Mexican-inspired black beans and rice with chorizo. Definitely quality ingredients, very generous portion. From the warm greeting at the door to our equally enthusiastic server to the manager who asked our opinion, we felt welcomed and appreciated. To top of our wonderful dining experience, the final bill was so low, even after a generous tip, we can afford to go back again soon. While a little challenging to find (at the end of East 12th Street ), just look for the valet parking stand and ask."

  • "I went to Casa during the off hour (twixt lunch and dinner) so the place wasn't crowded - which for our business conversation was great. The food was well prepared and presented. Wait staff was friendly and helpful. Deserves a repeat visit."

  • "This was our first visit and although we checked out the menu online before our dinner, we did not know what to expect overall. We were greeted and seated immediately and our server Steven was great! He was helpful with menu suggestions, beverage choices, and guiding us through our meal. We ate early and were surprised at how few customers were there, so I expect that this is a later crowd due to the location and clientele."

  • "I went to CDB for a girls night, and we all enjoyed ourselves. Valet parking was a welcome sight, after circling around lost for 20 minutes downtown. On that note, the CDB Mojito was delicious. My girlfriends had a blackberry basil and prickly pear and liked them, too. The queso dip was the best any of us have ever had - highly recommended. Our server was very sweet and attentive. The only negative aspect of our meal was twice having to witness the female manager on duty that night berating her staff next to our table. While I understand that it's sometimes necessary to correct behavior, doing so on the floor during service in front of diners isn't the right time!"

  • "We went with a group of 8 people. We made a reservation, but the place wasn't all that busy. I was relieved since sometimes groups of that size can overwhelm busy places. The drinks were superb. After that however service got a little slow. It seemed like it took a very long time for our food to come. I realize we were a table of 8, but the place wasn't that busy. The water glasses are tiny, so they give you glass bottles to refill. That's fine, except those bottles don't go a long way either. We were without water for awhile. It seemed like our waiter was the only one, with 6-7 people just doing 'side jobs'. Our waiter needed help. Service would need to improve for me to return. When I asked the bartender for water, she seemed annoyed."

  • "The food needs some work. The guacamole was kind of bland. Too chunky, but that is just a personal preference. Chicken taco was ok, but I really did not like the fish taco. Queso dip was good, I liked the presentation. I had high hopes and was disappointed. Parking was also kind of annoying. We went to the parking deck but weren't sure which entrance to go in. If you want more customers make it super easy to get there. People are already intimidated of downtown dining bc of parking. Make valet free or put some signage on the parking decks. This could be a really good scene with a few changes. Great service though! Everyone was super nice."

  • "This was my second visit to Casa del Barco, and it did not disappoint. The staff was friendly and courteous. Great selection of interesting Margaritas at the bar and the food, well, you must try this place. It is not your run of the mill Mexican restaurant. They put an interesting twist on traditional favorites like enchiladas and tacos, but, you can mix and match items. Must try the guacamole to kick off the meal and finish with some warm churros with chocolate dipping sauce."

  • "The main thing that disappointed me was the food. The menu is priced for a quality restaurant but the food is very very disappointing. I order the tacos and they were lacking in flavor. In addition, the rice and beans on the side was disappointing. The rice was chewy which is completely unacceptable and the beans were not fully cooked which again is completely unacceptable. I think this place really needs another chef and kitchen staff because the creations coming out of the kitchen are doing the place injustice. Places like Havanna, La Bamba, and Tio Pablo which are pushing out Mexican Latin food that is better tasting and has a lower price. I would definitely go there for the bar and nothing else."
