Carter's Kitchengreat little place!The atmosphere is intimate and casual, but the food is superb! We went there for brunch, but definitely want to try dinner there next time! The seafood omelet was filled with crab, shrimp, and scallops . . .yum! The crab benedict was very good as well. The grits accompaniment were creamy with flavorful. The breakfast sandwiches and huge waffle passing our table looked tasty too. The staff was friendly and the dining room was cozy. After perusing opentable, we chose Carter's Kitchen for its already-great reviews. Exceeded all my expectations!! The service was unreal—so friendly and knowledgeable. The outdoor dining area was so cute. And the food was amazing. We started with okra chips and pimento cheese, both wonderful. My dad loved his lamb chops, my mom raved that she had the best crab cakes she'd ever had. Others in our party loved the fried shrimp and catfish. I had the kale Caesar (amazing!) and the vegan bolognese, with kale, soy chorizo and house-made vegan mozzarella which was just incredible. Everything is hand-made and they are easily able to accommodate allergies. The service is excellent and very friendly. This is a true gem and a great dinner experience! Truffle fries and benne seed lavash with pimento cheese spread shared by the table got things started on a high note. This time we brought a guest who was visiting from out of state and once again, Chauncey took the time to explain the menu options and offer suggestions. We are never rushed, even when the restaurant is packed, although this time they were moderately busy. All of the staff is very helpful and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. We arrived ten minutes early and the hostess didn't seat us until 9:00. That was way too long tp me.
Thankfully, once we were seated we were greeted by the nicest and most enthusiastic server we have had in ages. Mary Ashley quickly rid me of any frustration I had from the hostess because she was so positive about the restaurant, the menu, and the executive chef Bob Carter. (Bob, you have a gem of an employee here.)
The food was great. Our server explained how the menu was set up with entrees and small plates. So two small plates could give you more variety. We dined indoors as it was a wet evening with torrential downpours. After a short wait at the bar, we were seated and waitress Kathy Jo or KJ for short took care of us quite nicely. We opted for light since were are watching our calories. They do have vegetarian and gluten free items on the menu. Prices are above average high for the quantity that arrives at the table. Bibb salad was good but very light for 2 to share. The doormat flounder was more napkin sized and overly battered and fried. The scallops light plate for $12 came w/ only 3 scallops, should have been 5 for the price. We were initially seated by a family with unruly children and even though we'd met our server, Kelly, she cheerfully honored our request to move to the other side of the restaurant. Our new server was Little Meg and she's adorable. Kelly came over to check on us and make sure all was well. The manager came by, also. It was our anniversary and all the employees seemed to know and wished us a happy anniversary. Both of us had their special of meatballs and a fried pasta. Beautiful presentation and quite tasty. We shared peanut brittle chocolate cake of 8 layers and it was wonderful. I could tell the food that we would order would be good because of the bread they served. I would go to Carter's just for the bread, it was served very warm and freshly baked with soft butter not hard like other restaurants. Our waitress KJ was very professional, attentive and informative. The butternut squash ravioli's and the fried chicken were excellent. Don't forget dessert, warm chocolate pudding was too die for. They do say dark chocolate is good for you, don't they. Pleasant during a recent long weekend in Charleston, we decided to make a reservation there for our 1st night in SC. We were not disappointed. From the roasted cashews with rosemary (off the bar menu) that we chose to nosh on with our first glasses of wine, to the appetizer special of fried oysters on grits with a sweet corn relish, to our entrees of baked salmon with root vegetables and crispy flounder with shrimp, the food was superb--everything was done to order, served hot, and beautifully presented. The service was friendly, low-key, and efficient.
