Diner Reviews
  • "I took clients to Carrie Nation for a celebratory dinner and it was a great choice. Excellent food, wonderful drinks, great atmosphere. Service was a bit slow, due to a large party that came in, but I think it would be fine any other night. The Nutella Creme Brulee is to die for!"

  • "Gorgeous space with beautiful decor, fantastic food and awesome drinks. It's so nice to get an amazing cocktail! Have yet to check out the entertainment in the back, but I'll get to it sometime. I've lived in Beacon for almost 10 years. Carrie Nation is a welcome addition to the neighborhood."

  • "My friends and I had an okay dining experience but not great. We made a reservation and yet we were put in an empty room right next to the front door which had no one else seated in there. We felt like we were on the outskirts and we feel we didn't get the proper dining experience we could have had. The food was pretty good but nothing special. I loved the steak frites, but my friend's dishes were mediocre and the sides, which had a ton of potential, were disappointing. The drinks were ok but did not live up to the standard of a $13 drink. I expect perfection when the drinks are that expensive. Unfortunately, I would only recommend this to a large rowdy group for the bar in the back for beers, but not for the restaurant or the cocktails."

  • "The server was in over his head - though coming from this industry, I can definitely say it was not his fault. He wasn't getting much help from other servers or supporting staff, and it doesn't seem like this place has much of a training program, considering how 'all over the place' this guy was. The hostesses were a bit awkward at the front (usually hostesses/hosts say hello & welcome when you walk in, guess not here!...). Food was pretty good, although it took so long that it was a bit cold when it came out. Drinks were fantastic - wine list isn't extensive. I think if everything was going right and working together, this restaurant could be great. Unfortunately, the experience was lacking."

  • "So excited to find another good option for dinner before a show on Washington St. Drinks were fabulous, as were the oysters on the half shell and hazelnut encrusted goat cheese salad. Lobster BLT was huge and lobster pot pie and lobster Mac and cheese all got thumbs up from our diners. Several items on the menu were unavailable, but replacements were offered. Anthony was our server, and he was great. It was starting to get a bit loud as we were leaving, but for early diners catching a bite before the show, the meal was perfect and noise levels were not a problem."

  • "First off the service from the hostess to when you leave is superb, extremely friendly, helpful and efficient. The food is absolutely amazing, this is only my second time having dinner here, and the menu of dishes Chef Jamie has provided will have your taste buds smiling just looking at the menu, I recommend the Grilled Gulf White Shrimp and Jumbo Scallops (pan seared, crispy prosciutto, basil oil, truffle cream sauce, three cheese tortellini) one of my absolute favorites. There's only so much characters I'm allowed to type in this review, OVERALL this place great from the food, to the drinks, and service. Just give it a try once & you'll understand why I gave them 5stars and you'll leave wanting to come back later that same week :)"

  • "It started out fine. We got there early and sat right down. The place was empty except for the after work bar crowd. The waiter said hi and asked for drink orders. We needed a minute to check out the menu so we ask for him to come back. It was about 15 minutes before we saw him again. When it was time to order we asked what was on the cheese plate. Simple question. "I think provolone" was his answer. Funny, although a bad sign. We did order the cheese plate and our meals at once. We didn't make it halfway into the cheese plate before our meals came out. Even the runner asked it it was to soon. The entrees were fine and the drinks were good. But after the rough start I was ready to go. It's a one and done for me."

  • "It wasn't romantic per say but it was still elegant to me. The server was friendly as well as host. Server was knowledgeable about menu. There was an impressive wine list and cocktail selection. The food was delivered in reasonable time. It was hot and super delicious. The dessert was out of this world. I would have liked the coffee hotter. It was lukewarm but nothing to complain about. We retuned after the theatre for a glass of wine and the manager acknowledged us and gave us a tour of the Speakeasy room. Very lively and lots of fun for friends to gather. If too busy the bar in the restaurant was also a great place to socialize. The meal was shrimp and scallops on pasta for 3 of us and sword fish for the 4 th person."

  • "This was the best restaurant experience I've had in a while by far. The food was amazing, the service was great, and I can't wait to go back."

  • "The food and service was great. Our waiter was very attentive and helpful. even after he discovered that our party of six was down to four. My only complaint was that it was VERY loud. I wish they'd build a wall to separate the bar and dining room."

  • "Reservations for 11:45am, arrived at 11:40am, promptly seated, first group there as a matter of fact. Ordered 5 waters, 2 apps upon waitress' greeting of the table, ordered entrees shortly after. Waited forever. Didn't get entrees until after 12:30pm. One lunch was missing part of her sandwhich...the cheese! How does someone forget the cheese?"

  • "I showed up for a 7:30 reservation with 4 of my family members and checked in at the hostess stand. She told us to wait one minute, and then the SAME girl returned 5 minutes later to ask if we were all set. We should have left then. 10 minutes after we were seated a waiter arrived...we thought finally some service. He arrived to make an excuse telling us our actual waiter is busy. This charade continued for over 2 hrs.. They gave us complimentary appetizers but the service was the worst. It seemed like it was our waiter's 1st day and he had no help from management. It's unfortunate that this experience was so disappointing because we were former patrons of 6B, Emmet's, and Scholars, but this restaurant is not worth the trouble."

  • "Not sure if this was just an off night for the restaurant but the experience was just plain terrible in every way from the waiter who wore a lot of cologne (big no no in the food buisness!) to the overdressed salads, food that looked unappetizing, weird bread cut into cubes>???, (really?). Although the chef is allegedly a graduate of the CIA, one would never have known this by the lack of attention to detail, bad food presentations and lackluster tastes. I spoke with someone who had drinks at the bar and apparently this is a big drinking hole for the 20 something crowd, do not go for the food!"

  • "My first visit to Carrie Nation. A little anxious as I was hosting out of town friends for lunch, after a tour of the Boston Athenaeum just across Beacon St. We had a late Saturday lunch. The restaurant was quietish because of the time. Well appointed furnishings and memorabilia from the days of Carrie Nation. Excellent lunch. Burger and sweet potato fries delicious. The hits of the lunch were the warmed crusty bread with oil, sparked by the red pepper flakes joining the garlic and the cheese; and the quiche/tart, creamy and flavorful. Our server was pleasant and helpful. Definitely a new find! The bar was separated from the major part of the dining room by frosted screening - probably a good feature for evenings."

  • "They have a few things to work on- service was very friendly but also very difficult to get a hold of and we often went 10 minutes without anyone even walking by. Drinks are overpriced but really delicious. Food was fine- Ambiance was great."

  • "When to go: Perfect place if you're looking for a high-energy scene with a young crowd. Definitely recommend for fun events -- birthdays, engagements, etc. Lots going on in the bars, which spills out into the dining room. Great for groups. When not to go: Don't go if you've got food or service as your priority, or are dining with picky restaurant goers. Food and drinks are solid, but not spectacular. My major complaint is the service -- despite a reservation, our group had to wait 45 minutes to be seated and the staff barely apologized and did not comp our group with anything. Otherwise, at-the-table service is fine if a bit sparse."

  • "I do not get how they don't have a noise level for loud in open table rating... other than that this place was very good and very busy don't even bother going to the back bar because it is always crowded and I hate being in tight places not being able to hear anything and keep repeating the word What! This place has a throw back look and the chairs are very comfortable."

  • "Based on my first dining experience at Carrie Nation, I will be returning. Had a hard time deciding what to order as many of the menu items sounded appealing in a comfort food sort of way. The clam chowder was solid - good, nothing especially memorable. I had the garden salad with scallops. The salad itself consisted of a nice assortment of greens and toppings, but was overly dressed. The scallops were tasty and very well prepared. Liked the big club chairs at some of the tables. Will be back to try more menu items."

  • "I come to Carrie Nation often for a drink or two during the work week, but this weekend was my first visit on a Saturday night. Made an 8pm reservation for dinner with a friend from out of town - we ordered more appetizers than I can count, and shared a bottle of wine. Our server was great, though it did take him awhile at the beginning to come take our order, but after that he was very attentive. After about 2 hours at our table, we ventured back to the speakeasy for another drink. It was packed - there was a line out the door and we waited about 10 minutes to get in. I'm glad to see Carrie Nation is this busy on the weekend because that means it will be sticking around!"

  • "This restaurant had a nice food and drink menu (although, unlike on the online menu, there was no vegetarian entree). The atmosphere/decor were very nice, although more so in the bar than the actual dining area. However, by about 9pm the dining area was very loud, as there was a long line of people waiting to get into the nightclub/lounge area that wound into the dining area. The food was very good. The drinks were also good, but inconsistent; the same drink ordered twice in the same evening was dramatically different in taste an appearance. The waiter was friendly but very new and therefore did not seem to know much about the menu."

  • "We finally checked out Carrie Nation for a quick squeezed-in dinner. The place is relatively spacious, which is a bonus as most Boston restaurants are cramped. The decor is old-time, prohibition-y. The food was pretty tasty (lobster pot pie and lobster BLT were both good), and the prices are relatively affordable for the area, and the service was fast, efficient, and friendly. We will certainly be back!"

  • "Amazing restaurant. Such a gorgeous setting. Fantastic cocktail. We ordered the lamb special and kale salad. Loved both. The gingerbread sundae dessert was delicious. Great for many occasions, groups, couple, girls/guys night out."

  • "A member of our group has a severe allergy to tomato and basil. We informed our server and discussed options on the menu that would be appropriate. Despite this, he was served three dishes with tomato. Incredibly, one of these was a salad to replace a dish that had a tomato sauce. The replacement salad came with large, clearly visible chunks of tomato. In addition to the allergy issues, the roasted chicken dish was very disappointing. It was bland, the skin was rubbery and unedible and the mashed potatoes were gluey and bland. The steak ( steak frites) was dry and tough. The restaurant is beautifully appointed, the seating comfortable and private."

  • "Prohibition style bar and restaurant. Good addition to Beacon Hill. Capitalizing on craft cocktail craze. Food was terrific - charcuterie plate was terrific and shrimp and scallop entree excellent. Was there for lunch but dinner menu looks similarly strong."

  • "Went here for Valentines Day. It took about 15 minutes for our waiter to come over with waters. The food was not good, the service was worse. I could have understood if it was busy, but it wasn't. I felt like I spent the whole evening trying to look for a waiter to flag down, only to have them seem annoyed that I was asking for something."

  • "The arugula golden beet salad was pleasing to the eye, and equally pleasing to the palate. The lobster pot pie was good with a generous portion of lobster. It could become an excellent dish if the sauce was more flavorful. Possibly intensifying the flavors with a reduction? The cheese cake with chocolate sauce was well presented and delectable. Our waitress was attentive. Valet parking was excellent."

  • "Our waitress took a half hour to bring us the first round of drinks. It then took another twenty minutes to get our oysters on the half shell. After that, she continued to be incredibly inattentive and made us feel like second class citizens. We couldn't believe how poor this service was for such a well-reviewed restaurant."

  • "I had a good experience dining at Carrie Nation for lunch I was looking forward to taking the family there for dinner. It started off well with our booth reserved and we were seated promptly. We were not pleased with the very low lighting, making it hard to read the menu and it was a bit noisy. While our food was very good our server took the joy out of the experience. He was slightly attentive at best, never brought us bread, was very slow to refill drinks, cleared the table of everything while we were sitting there include my sisters drink which she was still enjoying and included charges from another table on our check. It may have been isolated to this server but it took away from what we hoped would be a fun evening out."

  • "So this was my first trip at Carrie Nation, and I'm happy I took the chance. The dining room is spacious unlike many restaurants in Boston - we didn't have to compete with neighboring tables to have a conversation. The service was absolutely excellent, and the food was great. I will definitely be making a return trip."

  • "the cocktails are nicely made, but not spectacular. the food on the other hand are quite good, appropriately priced and portioned. we got the large seafood tower full of very fresh oyster, clams and prawns, topped with two full sized lobster. the entrees were very well prepared too. i particularly liked the roasted chicken. the servers and bartenders were all very polite and smiley, however the two hostesses were cold and snappy with us. Even though it was only 6 pm, and we were the only guests at the entrance at that point, it took them a good minute before she looks up from the computer and greet us coldly. other than that, it was a very good place."

  • "Carrie Nation is a relatively new addition to the Beacon Hill area near Boston's Gov't Center. It had been mentioned several times by co-workers and this was my first opportunity to go there for dinner. I was very impressed. The beverage selection was comprehensive - I had a Harpoon seasonal that was new to me and very good. The dinner menu had, I think, something for everyone. I had a pork chop that was perfectly prepared and delicious. The wait staff was prompt and courteous and the prices were extremely reasonable. Seating was very comfortable. The interior is spacious and you are not crowded by the other diners. Highly recommended."
