A word from Carriage House
Some of the seating at Carriage House is non-traditional. Every seat, however, allows a unique perspective of the Carriage House experience. If you have any concerns regarding your table, or to check additional availability, please give us call.

From its origins as a tack room to its contemporary incarnation as a hospitable retreat, the Lowcountry Carriage House has evolved from its rustic roots to offer genteel repose-much like Southern culinary culture itself. Our modern carriage house beckons with both intriguing history and fresh inspiration, enfolding visitors in a simpler way of life where a small plate of shrimp and a nip of bourbon are the evening’s star attractions. Find this culinary excursion in chef Mark Steuer’s menu at Chicago’s own Carriage House, bringing “down south” up north.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I could eat their fried chicken for every meal, were it not for the increased risk of a heart attack. Also, the mushroom/truffle/egg dish is outstanding. The cocktails are pretty out there, if you're into that sort of thing."

  • "Delicious Southern style food with a twist. Wonderful flavors, beautiful presentation. Rustic charm."

  • "The menu offerings are unique and tremendously delicious........at a very high cost. I had 1 drink, 2 appetizers and an entree. With a 18% tip it cost nearly $80. The portions were all very small......but excellent. Asking $26 for a small pork entrée in an area loaded with good restaurants is a bit presumptuous to say the least; no matter how it's prepared. Nevertheless, I will most likely go back sometime with a friend or two so I can sample more items without getting beat up on the check. Sadly, while the food is incredible, this is definitely not the place to eat if you're alone. Unless, of course you're a Kennedy or Rockefeller. Great concept but not realistic."

  • "Very bad for us this day in particular (waited 15 minutes to be acknowledged). Appetizer came with entree... bill came before we were ready to leave... Food as always was good, unique."

  • "Came here for brunch with friends and had an amazing meal. Make sure to eat the shrimp n grits!"

  • "This place was amazing. I have been trying to get in for months and so excited we got a table. We were greeted by a very friendly host and requested to sit outside. Our server, Elise was so insightful on the wine and cocktail menu and helped us make brilliant decisions. We relaxed with drinks while we studied the menu. The manager, Zach, came over to welcome us and was incredibly kind telling us what was great and made us feel very special. We ordered the oyster appetizer and the fried green tomatoes. Both were AMAZING. Our entrees, the pork shoulder and the grouper were outstanding. Please know I don't get excited about food but this was beyond my expectations. I will be back.. many times."

  • "Our dining experience (first time here at random) was exceptional. We ate outside on a perfect Sunday night. Ordered the fried chicken dinners. Everything was surprisingly awesome. If you have an affection for fried chicken, this was good stuff. Thick, crunchy breading. Juicy tender chicken. Perfectly seasoned. Sides were great, esp the cole slaw."

  • "Interesting concept: high brow southern meets Spanish tapas! We were encouraged to share small dishes of wonderful concoctions (sauteed oyster mushroom and marinated ramps over grits with a poached egg) but my partner doesn't do that. (unless I have Shrimp and Broccoli with Walnut Sauce). After the She Crab Soup, my "small" dish was PLENTY. There were lots of interesting things on the menu. Our small sampling of it indicated very rich food."

  • "Hard to choose among all the tasty options, but everything we tried was topnotch, including the La Colombe french press coffee. Their indoor/outdoor space in front is a nice respite from the heat, while still feeling like you are outside. Cool decor, and great service round out a totally satisfying experience. Their Dinner menu is a winner as well!"

  • "Read about it inthe NYT and it was great. Crab dip, shrimp and grits, and truffle mushoom and egg dishes were amazing. Very knowledgeable and helpful staff."

  • "This is my favorite southern food place in chicago. There are not too many that I know of; so I come here for the mushroom grits and low country boil."

  • "Recently had a excellent dining experience at Carriage House. Summer dining outside can be a harrowing experience. Too hot, too cold, chance of rain and in the city too noisy (street noise). We were seated in the "porch" area at the restaurant. All the issues of outdoor eating faded away. Quiet, comfortable and even on a hot night the fans would probably do a great job. The food was finger lickin' good particularly the Fried Chicken Thigh and the skillet corn bread and several other small plates. We did encounter a problem with our entrees which came out almost 20 minutes apart but the management was on top of the situation and apologized profusely."

  • "Always a solid choice when looking for cuisine that's a step apart from standard American fare. Low country boil a personal favorite"

  • "I've been to the Carriage House a number of times now and it continues to grow in my estimation. I love the small plate options. They are creative, innovative, and delicious. The low country boil is a must whenever I dine there. I will definitely be returning soon."

  • "Carriage House always treats me well! I'm from Charleston, SC, so I love the southern-inspired dishes. This time I had the she-crab soup and shared the lowcountry boil. The she-crab soup was very different take on the southern classic. It may have had wayyy too much sherry. It still found it tasty. The lowcountry boil was fantastic and the perfect amount for two people. I would have swapped the fennel for onions, though. Anyway, great service as always!"

  • "It wasn't that bad. But it absolutely didn't meet my expectation from those review I read. We went for the family style Sunday fried chicken supper which is such a lovely idea. But it took quite awhile for the food to come out. Furthermore, we got our drinks after the food is served. Boo.... The server was friendly and nice. But he spent most of his time inside the restaurant doing you know what.... We probably would spend more on the drinks, if he came by more often. The chicken was crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. Quite tasty if you like something salty."

  • "Very eclectic menu. Lots of fun items on the menu along with inventive Bloody Mary's. Overall I'd put this on your list!"

  • "The brunch was amazing. The smoked chicken wings were well prepared. The sauce for the french toast was the best I've ever had. The beignets were ok. The espresso sauce that came with the beignets were too powerful. So I dipped the beignets with the mysterious awesome sauce that came with the french toast. It worked out amazingly."

  • "Family took me for Father's Day brunch. The food was really good and I would like to go back for dinner sometime. I had requested an outdoor table when I made the reservation, but it was never mentioned when we checked in and we were sat in their porch area which was totally enclosed except for the open doors. That was really the only disappointment."

  • "I made a reservation at Carriage House for my husband's birthday. This was the first time that we had dined at this restaurant, and it exceeded our expectations! The food was delicious, and the service was great! I would definitely recommend the chicken wings. They were the best that I have ever had!"

  • "I come here for convenience. The food is always too salty, like painfully salty. This was my third try dining here, and my last."
    Dined on 6/8/2014
  • "Had a good meal here for a Saturday brunch, but wasn't aware that there wasn't a lunch menu or anything that wasn't fried available. The fried green tomatoes were good, but it was the only thing I was feeling on the menu. I will not return for brunch."

  • "We've now dined at Carriage House four times. While the service has always been slow and disappointing, the ambiance usually makes up for it. The restaurant is clean and comfortable, and we love sitting in the semi-outdoor or outdoor space whenever possible. (It doesn't hurt that we're only a 10 minute walk away either.) As for the food, I really like Southern cuisine and I've enjoyed several dishes here, but we usually have some "misses" during each meal. Some of my favorite dishes include the hushpuppies, crab dip, pork shoulder hash, cornbread, fried green tomatoes, and fried chicken thigh - these are always excellent."

  • "Was expecting some inspired Southern fare in Chicago. Instead all we got was an average to below average meal and extremely extremely slow service. Everyone around us was also experiencing the same so it likely was systematic. The only bright side to the meal was the mushroom dish with grits and the pork belly. Portion sizes on the small plates are... well small."

  • "I love me some Carriage House! It's been my favorite restaurant since I found it! The staff is lovely and personable, the food is always on par, and the bartender is very skilled. I will say that it's difficult for people with dietary restrictions...no vegan friendly, or lactose-free options are available. "

  • "The Brunch was great. A very robust menu with something to please everyone. Freshly squeezed OJ was excellent. Great outdoor seating area and the service was excellent."

  • "My girlfriends and I went to Carriage House for brunch on a Saturday morning. It was not over crowded (or crowded at all in fact) and we were given an outdoor table immediately. The french press coffee was delicious and brought out quickly, our server gave us great suggestions for food (and had a cute accent)--I got the chicken and biscuits which were really good, and a new take on traditional chicken & biscuits, my friend got the truffle mushroom dish which was also really tasty. I would definitely suggest this restaurant to any one for a date, a morning meal, a lunch, or even dinner. "

  • "This is a beautiful restaurant - lovely decor. Great service - everyone was super friendly from the moment we walked in until we paid the bill. I had the shrimp and grits. It was phenomenal. My husband had the fried green tomatoes - it wasn't bad but could not compare to the shrimp and grits. I would definitely go back! "

  • "our server was excellent and very passionate about the food (always a good sign). Generally we were a little underwhelmed by the quality of the food (specifically the appetizers). The boil and the roast entrees were both good though. This is my 2nd time there... had similar experence the first time. I think I need to try brunch. My guess is that the better reviews come from the brunch menu..."

  • "This was our first visit to Carriage House which happened to be a Sunday evening when they serve a family style/buffet supper priced currently a $30 per person, children under 12 are free. It worked perfectly for our group of 4 adult and 3 children. They had a great mac and cheese which is usually reliable for children along with some amazing biscuits, interesting flavored butters, homemade sweet pickles along with fried chicken and collard greens with pies for dessert. I had a wonderful glass of pinot noir and there is a nice selection of beers along with full bar offerings. It is a comfortable and fun neighborhood restaurant and a nice gathering spot."
