  • "Recently had a excellent dining experience at Carriage House. Summer dining outside can be a harrowing experience. Too hot, too cold, chance of rain and in the city too noisy (street noise). We were seated in the "porch" area at the restaurant. All the issues of outdoor eating faded away. Quiet, comfortable and even on a hot night the fans would probably do a great job. The food was finger lickin' good particularly the Fried Chicken Thigh and the skillet corn bread and several other small plates. We did encounter a problem with our entrees which came out almost 20 minutes apart but the management was on top of the situation and apologized profusely."

  • "It wasn't that bad. But it absolutely didn't meet my expectation from those review I read. We went for the family style Sunday fried chicken supper which is such a lovely idea. But it took quite awhile for the food to come out. Furthermore, we got our drinks after the food is served. Boo.... The server was friendly and nice. But he spent most of his time inside the restaurant doing you know what.... We probably would spend more on the drinks, if he came by more often. The chicken was crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. Quite tasty if you like something salty."

  • "Carriage House always treats me well! I'm from Charleston, SC, so I love the southern-inspired dishes. This time I had the she-crab soup and shared the lowcountry boil. The she-crab soup was very different take on the southern classic. It may have had wayyy too much sherry. It still found it tasty. The lowcountry boil was fantastic and the perfect amount for two people. I would have swapped the fennel for onions, though. Anyway, great service as always!"

  • "The brunch was amazing. The smoked chicken wings were well prepared. The sauce for the french toast was the best I've ever had. The beignets were ok. The espresso sauce that came with the beignets were too powerful. So I dipped the beignets with the mysterious awesome sauce that came with the french toast. It worked out amazingly."

I had requested an outdoor table when I made the reservation, but it was never mentioned when we checked in and we were sat in their porch area which was totally enclosed except for the open doors. That was really the only disappointment."

  • "We've now dined at Carriage House four times. While the service has always been slow and disappointing, the ambiance usually makes up for it. The restaurant is clean and comfortable, and we love sitting in the semi-outdoor or outdoor space whenever possible. (It doesn't hurt that we're only a 10 minute walk away either.) As for the food, I really like Southern cuisine and I've enjoyed several dishes here, but we usually have some "misses" during each meal. Some of my favorite dishes include the hushpuppies, crab dip, pork shoulder hash, cornbread, fried green tomatoes, and fried chicken thigh - these are always excellent."

  • "Was expecting some inspired Southern fare in Chicago. Instead all we got was an average to below average meal and extremely extremely slow service. Everyone around us was also experiencing the same so it likely was systematic. The only bright side to the meal was the mushroom dish with grits and the pork belly. Portion sizes on the small plates are... well small."

  • "My girlfriends and I went to Carriage House for brunch on a Saturday morning. It was not over crowded (or crowded at all in fact) and we were given an outdoor table immediately. The french press coffee was delicious and brought out quickly, our server gave us great suggestions for food (and had a cute accent)--I got the chicken and biscuits which were really good, and a new take on traditional chicken & biscuits, my friend got the truffle mushroom dish which was also really tasty. I would definitely suggest this restaurant to any one for a date, a morning meal, a lunch, or even dinner. "

The boil and the roast entrees were both good though. This is my 2nd time there... had similar experence the first time. I think I need to try brunch.   • "This was our first visit to Carriage House which happened to be a Sunday evening when they serve a family style/buffet supper priced currently a $30 per person, children under 12 are free. It worked perfectly for our group of 4 adult and 3 children. They had a great mac and cheese which is usually reliable for children along with some amazing biscuits, interesting flavored butters, homemade sweet pickles along with fried chicken and collard greens with pies for dessert. I had a wonderful glass of pinot noir and there is a nice selection of beers along with full bar offerings. It is a comfortable and fun neighborhood restaurant and a nice gathering spot."

  • "The mushroom truffle small plate with egg is AMAZING! I would go back to the bar to just order that and I would order two. The small plates were good, also had the hush puppies and grits. The dinner plates were just ok, not bad, but nothing to write home about - we tried the pot roast, clam bake and trout, there was just nothing spectacular. The trout was the best in my opinion. The service was the most disappointing part. We got our small plates before our drinks...we ordered the drinks well before we ordered food. The server was nice, it was just super slow and he never seemed to be around. I would go back, but only for the mushroom truffle egg dish, I am still thinking about it actually. "

  • "We decided to go to Carriage House after not dining there for several months. Sadly we were disappointed, the quality of food is no longer what it used to be. We ordered the Fried Green Tomatoes and the Pork Belly Shrimp Pie. The shrimps on both dishes did not taste fresh, instead it tasted like frozen. It had an unpleasant taste and rubbery texture. Also the pie did not taste of pork at all because the taste of the shrimp was so overpowering. We then had the pot roast, which was also very disappointing. The pot roast was visually unappealing, the meat looked very rare and the texture was mushy. We then ordered the rhubarb and strawberry dessert, which was inedible. The dessert was mostly of lemon curd, which was WAY TOO sweet! "

Our Honeymoon was in South Carolina and we both fell in love with low country food. Next to impossible to find anywhere. You should have seen her light up when she saw she crab soup on the menu. Loved the decorating, we want to design our kitchen exactly like they did the restaurant. Love the wicker park neighborhood. "

  • "Great location in a really lively part of Wicker Park neighborhood. Family style servings make for a fun adventure. The crab soup & collard greens were great! The oysters were a little strange; love oysters on half shell usually, but these were over-prepared and almost warm (though still raw?) We wished we had tried the Low Country Boil, because a neighboring table ordered that and it looked amazing. Fantastic cocktails. Good vibe."

  • "I arranged to have my birthday dinner here. They were having their special Low Country Boil on Sunday. Being from the South- I was very excited about it. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by the food. There was barely any seafood. You may have gotten a couple of shrimp per person (definitely not $30/ person worth). Not a true Low Country Boil. However, most of the sides were tasty and the rubarb cobbler was excellent. The servers were kind, inviting, and knowledgeable. I would like to try the Carriage House again when I'm able to order off the menu. "

  • "Took my mom for her birthday. We decided to be a bit extravagant given the occasion. I'll break it down by dish from here: 1. Cucumber sald A fantastic starter. Not mind-blowing, but could eat it for lunch everyday. 2. Shrimp and pork belly pie Easily the least satisfying dish we had. Underwhelming at best. 3. Shrimp and grits Best grits I've ever had. Truly exceptional. That being said, shrimp and grits at duseks was slightly more pleasurable. 4. Chicken thigh Juiciest chicken I've ever had. Honey and cucumber pairing was genius. 5. Low country boil Broth was to die for. Dunk the bread and prepare yourself for transcendence. Fantasic overall experience. Would suggest to friends and certainly come back again. "

  • "The food was excellent. We didn't have any of the supper plates but had several small dishes and sides. I think we both thought everything was very good to excellent. Their house cocktails were ehhh. There wine list and selections seemed decent with some good reasonably priced bottles. In terms of service the bus staff was greater but our waitress, was decent. On the couple of questions we had, she gave pretty scripted responses that didn't seem very authentic, on the plus side, she had no problem puling a cocktail that my wife didn't like off the tab w/o us asking. I really liked the food, I'd go back."
