We sat in the front porch area (enclosed and heated) and it was a great place to enjoy both the outside and in! The food was very tasty, for dinner we had the catfish, the chicken and dumplings, the beef rib and had the deviled eggs and the pimento cheese board for an appetizer. All were delicious! We also tried the Mule drinks and they were done very well. Large slices of lemon and plenty of mint presented in mason jars. Nice touch. The only thing better than the food was the great service we received. They were very attentive and pleasant. By the way, it was a Sat night and quite busy but all went well. We will definitely go again! Great find!

Excellent brunch, service and overall atmosphere. Make sure to try the special punch at brunch as they remix it fresh with new recipe combinations regularly. Portions are great - can't go wrong with the chicken gravy and homemade biscuits but make sure you come hungry as the beignets with caramel dipping sauce is a must to go with your coffee and the cheesy grits are an excellent stick to your ribs side!

My family went to Carriage House for dinner, having been chosen by one of my kids for her birthday celebration. We ordered several of the starters and entrees and shared. One was better than the next. As the finale, we ordered one of each of the desserts, and the attentive staff was kind enough to put a candle on one for the Happy Birthday song. The desserts were awesome. I would recommend Carriage House for dates, families and special occasions.

  • Sunday dinner not worth the price

We were looking for a place in that area to meet on a Sunday, and chose Carriage House. The Sunday dinner sounded good. All-you-can-eat fried chicken, sides, dessert. I was hoping for some outstanding food, based on the cost ($30 p.p.) and M-Sat menu. Very disappointed. The white meat was dry, the chicken was heavily breaded, making the pieces almost unrecognizable. The mac and cheese was tasteless. They brought out two biscuits (which were great) for three people. Way over-priced, and not very good.

If you don't eat grits or biscuits , which I don't, you will have a hard time finding anything to eat here. It is a very limited menu with not a vegetable in sight. So I settled for some scrambled eggs and overcooked potatoes. Our companions had french toast that had only a fleeting acquaintance with egg; and my spouse had the shrimp and grits, two large shrimp in a small ramekin with grits. The service was actually too quick. We really felt that they were rushing us out the door. But the place is very cute.

So we love the food here. Flavorful and unique! But for some reason the experience was a little off. The grits and mushrooms were cold. My chicken and biscuit were fine, but my potatoes were cold. They did bring out a new grits dish, which was warmer. But the experience would have been better if our food was hot like made to order. We have had excellent meals here before, and the service was top notch. Which is why it was such a let down. But it was a one time thing, we hope.

Food arrived before our first drinks. The pork chop was dry/overcooked, and the fried green tomatoes thick and gummy. We had the apple crisp which was like eating a bowl of applesauce. The waiter service was extremely slow and somewhat rude, while the busboys were constantly rushing to try to clear our plates before we were down. I had said we had a birthday, both in my reservation and when they called to confirm. However, there was nothing done while we were there. I asked the hostess and she said: "I guess we forgot to write it down." Overall not a good experience.

Went for Sunday brunch, as they're listed in a few places as a top brunch spot in Chicago. The food was, in a word, unimpressive. The cornbread starter was fine, but amusingly small. They ran out of their signature entree (chicken and waffles) by 1PM, so we had the pork belly with rice and the truffled eggs with mushrooms and grits. The pork belly entree was good, but the other was almost inedible. It was cold, had a kind of soupy-gelatinous texture that was...disagreeable. Service was memorably bad. Our server didn't greet us for fifteen minutes, forgot our coffee, and after rushing our order, forgot things for each course (notably, silverware). Naturally, he was absent for the 90% meal. I'd avoid CH, for brunch at least.

I only saw two servers present during the length of my meal. I would estimate there being 28 indoor tables but I could be off. 14 table sections are unrealistic. I found myself waiting for the server each of the three times that she came to the table. Food was delicious. Mac and cheese, the short rib, everything that I ordered was good.

I ordered the $35 seafood boil expecting something terrific at that price point. It was quite ordinary and somewhat bland. We were also told that it could easily feed two people, it was a good thing my wife ordered her own dinner as that serving was no way going to feed two adults. My wife ordered shrimp and grits which she enjoyed so overall the restaurant was ok but I don't think we'll return.

Most notably I love the modern country decor with large tables for medium sized groups. The restaurant is fairly large with some outdoor seating and an enclosed porch. We also appreciate the fact that reservations are welcome since we were dining with a child. The booster seat we mentioned in our opentable notes section was already set up when we arrived. As for the food, the brunch menu is a bit limited but delicious especially the fresh squeezed orange juice. Recomendation: if you dont live in wicker park, go on a Sunday morning at 10am. Free parking on the street out front!

This was my second visit to carriage house. The food, cocktails, and atmosphere were just as great as the last time. However, our server really dropped the ball. She was very slow to attend to our table. She mixed up one of our party's drink order and I think she forgot to put in the order for one of our dishes because it came out after we had completed all our other items. On our first visit we had great service so I would definitely go back and give it another chance; I hope our last visit was a one night hiccup in service.

I went here for a date recently and definitely enjoyed what Carriage House had to offer. When we arrived, we had to wait a few minutes for our table but that was just fine since we went to the bar and had a sampling of the delicious cocktails the bartenders can whip up. After sitting down, we decided to order the grouper as our supper and three small plates to have beforehand. The food was all quite delicious and the waiter even comped our ribs since there were some complaints from other folks that they were too salty. I thought they were fine and even better since they ended up being free! I would recommend this restaurant to a friend in a heartbeat.

I went to Carriage House previously for brunch and my shrimp n grits were great. I also completely loved the look and feel of the place. However, my husband's meal was mediocre. Thought I would give it another go with two friends on a girl's night out. The food was not special - not even the shrimp and grits! - and the service was slow to the point of frustration. I asked for a cup of tea and it never materialized. Our waiter never came back to check on us, which was strange because the place was empty. Ultimately, there wasn't enough there to give me a reason to return.

Took some out of town visitors here. Service was inconsistent but forgivable. Food was not forgivable. We all marveled at how the pulled pork somehow tasted like hot dog, and how a steak ordered medium rare could be sent out past medium when part of the preparation involved unnecessarily pre-slicing it, which left it not just overdone but cold. Other dishes were ok and were shared with those who misordered. We thought about complaining, but no one asked how the food was.

My daughter and I went to dinner at the Carriage House and really enjoyed the food and the ambiance. We told our food server that we had a tight timeframe for dinner since we needed to leave the restaurant within an hour to go somewhere. I had to constantly ask other food servers for what we needed since our designated server wasn't responsive to our timeframe. I'm not sure if I'll return to the restaurant due to the spotty service.

Fun and casual, but still refined. Rreally liked the decor, which has a country farmhouse feel without being kitschy. Room is spacious and open with high ceilings and different seating areas. It is both comfortable and elegant. Our food was very good for the most part, with only some minor missteps. The coleslaw (a side dish) was overly salty. It would have been nice to be able to eat the slaw since the fried chicken dinner was a bit heavy over all. The other dishes were all very good and without problems. Chef Steuer's biscuits were everything they should be. Best biscuits I've ever had, I will never forget them. Dessert was good, but the cobbler was just a bit too liquidy. The Sunday Supper is great value for the money at only $30pp.

The crab dip was delicious, the oysters were out of this world, the scrambled egg with truffle was devoured in 2 minutes, the pork shoulder was so tasty, and my date ate the grouper before I could blink an eye. Cocktails were great (I am an Old Fashioned kinda guy and apparently, so was she). Service was impeccable and the server was friendly but not too in your face. Overall, great experience.
