A word from Carriage House
Some of the seating at Carriage House is non-traditional. Every seat, however, allows a unique perspective of the Carriage House experience. If you have any concerns regarding your table, or to check additional availability, please give us call.

From its origins as a tack room to its contemporary incarnation as a hospitable retreat, the Lowcountry Carriage House has evolved from its rustic roots to offer genteel repose-much like Southern culinary culture itself. Our modern carriage house beckons with both intriguing history and fresh inspiration, enfolding visitors in a simpler way of life where a small plate of shrimp and a nip of bourbon are the evening’s star attractions. Find this culinary excursion in chef Mark Steuer’s menu at Chicago’s own Carriage House, bringing “down south” up north.

My wife and I recently dined at Carriage House. I had the chicken and dumplings, she had the catfish. Both were tasty and well prepared. We began the evening with the fried green tomatoes. Everything was well done. Nice drinks and a lively atmosphere. The wait staff missed a step.

I ordered the $35 seafood boil expecting something terrific at that price point. It was quite ordinary and somewhat bland. We were also told that it could easily feed two people, it was a good thing my wife ordered her own dinner as that serving was no way going to feed two adults. My wife ordered shrimp and grits which she enjoyed so overall the restaurant was ok but I don't think we'll return.

Most notably I love the modern country decor with large tables for medium sized groups. The restaurant is fairly large with some outdoor seating and an enclosed porch. We also appreciate the fact that reservations are welcome since we were dining with a child. The booster seat we mentioned in our opentable notes section was already set up when we arrived. As for the food, the brunch menu is a bit limited but delicious especially the fresh squeezed orange juice. Recomendation: if you dont live in wicker park, go on a Sunday morning at 10am. Free parking on the street out front!

This was my second visit to carriage house. The food, cocktails, and atmosphere were just as great as the last time. However, our server really dropped the ball. She was very slow to attend to our table. She mixed up one of our party's drink order and I think she forgot to put in the order for one of our dishes because it came out after we had completed all our other items. On our first visit we had great service so I would definitely go back and give it another chance; I hope our last visit was a one night hiccup in service.

I went here for a date recently and definitely enjoyed what Carriage House had to offer. When we arrived, we had to wait a few minutes for our table but that was just fine since we went to the bar and had a sampling of the delicious cocktails the bartenders can whip up. After sitting down, we decided to order the grouper as our supper and three small plates to have beforehand. The food was all quite delicious and the waiter even comped our ribs since there were some complaints from other folks that they were too salty. I thought they were fine and even better since they ended up being free! I would recommend this restaurant to a friend in a heartbeat.

I went to Carriage House previously for brunch and my shrimp n grits were great. I also completely loved the look and feel of the place. However, my husband's meal was mediocre. Thought I would give it another go with two friends on a girl's night out. The food was not special - not even the shrimp and grits! - and the service was slow to the point of frustration. I asked for a cup of tea and it never materialized. Our waiter never came back to check on us, which was strange because the place was empty. Ultimately, there wasn't enough there to give me a reason to return.

Took some out of town visitors here. Service was inconsistent but forgivable. Food was not forgivable. We all marveled at how the pulled pork somehow tasted like hot dog, and how a steak ordered medium rare could be sent out past medium when part of the preparation involved unnecessarily pre-slicing it, which left it not just overdone but cold. Other dishes were ok and were shared with those who misordered. We thought about complaining, but no one asked how the food was.

My daughter and I went to dinner at the Carriage House and really enjoyed the food and the ambiance. We told our food server that we had a tight timeframe for dinner since we needed to leave the restaurant within an hour to go somewhere. I had to constantly ask other food servers for what we needed since our designated server wasn't responsive to our timeframe. I'm not sure if I'll return to the restaurant due to the spotty service.

We went to Carriage House on a Sunday night. It wasn't made clear when booking via OpenTable or on the restaurant website that they only had the Sunday Supper for a fixed price and menu. My husband was looking forward to trying different things on the menu but sadly couldn't on a Sunday night. That said, the food was very good and we will definitely go back on a different night to try different things on the menu. Overall a great place!!

Fun and casual, but still refined. Rreally liked the decor, which has a country farmhouse feel without being kitschy. Room is spacious and open with high ceilings and different seating areas. It is both comfortable and elegant. Our food was very good for the most part, with only some minor missteps. The coleslaw (a side dish) was overly salty. It would have been nice to be able to eat the slaw since the fried chicken dinner was a bit heavy over all. The other dishes were all very good and without problems. Chef Steuer's biscuits were everything they should be. Best biscuits I've ever had, I will never forget them. Dessert was good, but the cobbler was just a bit too liquidy. The Sunday Supper is great value for the money at only $30pp.

First time at Carriage House. I have not a bad thing to say. The crab dip was delicious, the oysters were out of this world, the scrambled egg with truffle was devoured in 2 minutes, the pork shoulder was so tasty, and my date ate the grouper before I could blink an eye. Cocktails were great (I am an Old Fashioned kinda guy and apparently, so was she). Service was impeccable and the server was friendly but not too in your face. Overall, great experience. I can't wait to go back for the brunch!

My wife and I went for brunch on a sunny mild day and we were able to sit outdoors and enjoy the weekend crowds at a street fair just outside the restaurant. It made for an enjoyable experience helped, of course, by the food. She had the fried green tomatoes and I had a soft cooked egg served over grits with mushrooms and cheese. We plan on going back.

Food was fantastic. We've eaten there before and had excellent service. This time, the service was mediocre at best. Restaurant wasn't packed and we had a party of six. We waited at least 10 minutes before the server came over to take a drink order. For much of the night the server was simply MIA. We went long periods of time without drinks and when we were able to put in a request for another round of drinks it was painful how long it took to get them to the table. We'll go back because the food is always great and we've had exceptional service before but for some reason the server wasn't on their game during this visit.

I dined here with a friend on a Friday night. I had a 7:30 reservation, but phoned to let them know we would be late. They were very accommodating and let us have our choice of indoor or outdoor seating - we chose inside as it was a little humid. We started our experience with a nice bottle of Sauv Blanc. My friend and I were very chatting, so we barely looked at the menu, but the staff was lovely they gave us plenty of time to catch up and took note that we were in no rush. Our meal: - Shrimp Grits - out of this world - so rich and creamy. Perfect dish for two - I would not order as an app for anymore than two. - Crispy Chicken Thigh - really good, kind of wish they served two thighs. - Pork Shoulder was good, but not my favorite.

Have been wanting to try Carriage House for quite some time, but walked away disappointed. Nice space, but we were concerned from the get go, as the restaurant was nearly empty at 7pm on a Thursday night. Food was just ok. Very heavily salted, and of the four small plates we had the only thing we thought was truly good were the smoked chicken wings. Fried chicken thigh was one of the blandest things I have ever eaten. Mushrooms/polenta/egg was so salty I could not eat it. Crap dip itself was good, but the accompanying bread was stale. Pitcher (giant mason jar) of cocktail didn't seem to have a drop of alcohol in it. Good service, friendly and attentive. However, not enough to get us back.

Being from the south I felt the need to finally give this place a try and boy am I glad I did! It has great southern comfort food, but I can only speak for the brunch menu. I had my 2nd favorite shrimp and grits just behind eating it in Charleston and my mom's chicken and biscuit was oh so yummy (large but yummy). The feel of the place is really great with the typical southern porch for semi outside dinning. My only complaint was that they didn't have iced tea! Based on how good the food was, I can forgive them for this minor oversight. I can't wait to go back and try the dinner menu.

The menu offerings are unique and tremendously delicious........at a very high cost. I had 1 drink, 2 appetizers and an entree. With a 18% tip it cost nearly $80. The portions were all very small......but excellent. Asking $26 for a small pork entrée in an area loaded with good restaurants is a bit presumptuous to say the least; no matter how it's prepared. Nevertheless, I will most likely go back sometime with a friend or two so I can sample more items without getting beat up on the check. Sadly, while the food is incredible, this is definitely not the place to eat if you're alone. Unless, of course you're a Kennedy or Rockefeller. Great concept but not realistic.

This place was amazing. I have been trying to get in for months and so excited we got a table. We were greeted by a very friendly host and requested to sit outside. Our server, Elise was so insightful on the wine and cocktail menu and helped us make brilliant decisions. We relaxed with drinks while we studied the menu. The manager, Zach, came over to welcome us and was incredibly kind telling us what was great and made us feel very special. We ordered the oyster appetizer and the fried green tomatoes. Both were AMAZING. Our entrees, the pork shoulder and the grouper were outstanding. Please know I don't get excited about food but this was beyond my expectations. I will be back.. many times.

Interesting concept: high brow southern meets Spanish tapas! We were encouraged to share small dishes of wonderful concoctions (sauteed oyster mushroom and marinated ramps over grits with a poached egg) but my partner doesn't do that. (unless I have Shrimp and Broccoli with Walnut Sauce). After the She Crab Soup, my "small" dish was PLENTY. There were lots of interesting things on the menu. Our small sampling of it indicated very rich food.
