Carriage HouseGreat foodSecond time at this place and everything was great as usual. Service was exceptional, but what really stands out is the food and drinks. Great list of intricate cocktails, as well as an HUGE liquor list if you are into purity. Food was unique, creative, and delicious!
Must haves:
Shrimp and Grits
Fried Chicken
Pork Shoulder5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMWorth a try, for sure!I recently dined at Carriage House with my fiancé and soon-to-be in-laws to celebrate a belated Mother's Day. I had heard such great things about the place especially about their Low Country Boil was and we were not disappointed. We had brought in a cooler filled with ice and ice cream pints as a surprise for my mother-in-law and they were happy to accommodate our request to keep it in their cooler until we were done with dinner. The staff overall was just fantastic. The food - fried green tomatoes, cooked oysters with bacon, corn bread to die for, and of course the boil. Unless you insist on outside dining I would recommend sitting inside because they have great decor. Definitely worth it. Now what are you waiting for, book a table!5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMChicago TripMy boyfriend and I were just in Chicago for a weekend to celebrate his birthday at a cubs game. We decided on Carriage House for a late dinner and were not dissappointed. Our server, Emma, was very helpful and gave excellent suggestions as well as honest feedback regarding cocktails, local beers and the "best" of carriage house.
Best:
Fried Green Tomatoes (tabasco dressing-delicious!)
Shrimp and grits
Oysters (feels like a bacon hug---)
If you're an IPA fan-go for the gumball. All of our cocktails were solid-I don't think you can go wrong.
Overall-awesome experience.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMSouthern menu was unique andSouthern menu was unique and the food great; service excellent and we were able to sit outside which was very enjoyable.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMsaucy southern cuisineinitially reviewing the menu, I was a little apprehensive as I'm don't have a strong leaning towards southern cuisine; but every dish my table sampled, from the deviled eggs to the pork shoulder, was delectable. this may be the best food experience I've had in my 2 years at Chicago! The restaurant was extremely noisy, which made it hard to converse, but overall this is a not-to-be-missed eating experience.5/16/2013 12:00:00 AMTasty PlaceNice ambience and creative menu. Excellent food and service.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat, first time experience.Great, first time experience. The small plate portion of the menu was very enjoyable. And the cocktail list was a a surprise and definitely worth a try! A pregnant friend I was dinning with was also very excited that a "mocktail" was offered!5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMDelicious FoodGreat experience! Restaurant was accommodating when I added a couple friends to the reservation. Food was very good, lots of great flavors and ingredients. Cocktails were a success as well and food portions were perfect for sharing. I have now recommended this restaurant to friends for the great food, service and ambiance.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMExceeded the hypeWonderful place! We tried the fried green tomatoes, the bacon-wrapped rabbit, the mushrooms and eggs, and the steak with blue cheese. I'm not kidding when I say every dish kept topping the next. My girlfriend particularly liked the mushroom dish (and she doesn't love eggs, so that's saying something), and I thought the rabbit was outstanding. We'll definitely be back - hopefully soon. One of the best meals I've eaten in Chicago in the 18 years I've lived here.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMBlissfully Southern!Loved the food; the heart and soul that is put into all the dishes we tried is readily noticed; dynamic flavours and textures in every single one. Southern comfort food at it's best.5/1/2013 12:00:00 AMYummy food fit for a southernerI took my girl here for date, she's from the south. Scored major points, she was impressed by the food and even commented on how it was better than home. Great time. Great food. Great drinks.4/30/2013 12:00:00 AMHad a great time dining withHad a great time dining with the team at Carriage House. The food is incredible and the service was spot on.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMThe service was excellentThe service was excellent - from the waiter to the water/cleanup staff to the chef himself, who came to our table and who greeted us on the way out. The food was really memorable and every bite delicious. A few vegetarian options would be appreciated. This is a unique place in Chicago with top-of-the line food. I'd call the food bright, the ingredients well-matched and balanced. Mmmmm!4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMAs a small group we triedAs a small group we tried to get as much as we could from the menu and shared everything. Kept ordering more food even though I was full - it was that good.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMWent here for my friends birthdayWent here for my friends birthday and I have to say: I'm impressed with what Mark Steuer has created. A high-end take on southern comfort food. My favorite dish was the mushrooms, truffle and egg - delicious!4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMIt seems all new restaurantsIt seems all new restaurants in Chicago these days are going the "small plates" route. Southern food and small plates don't exactly go together but Carriage House makes it work. The Fried chicken thigh was a hearty portion (we had two). The grilled oysters were like a decadent southern version of Oysters Rockefeller. And they clearly put some kind of crack in the shrimp & grits dish because the gravy was slap-my-momma good. Save room for dessert though - I didn't and I regret it.4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMIts so different, just amazingIts so different, just amazing food and wonderful ambiance.4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMTasty with fabulous serviceThe restaurant experience overall was very good. The service was impecable, and the food was very tasty, but similar in taste/style to a lot of other restaurants that also do small plates. They had a tasty specialty cocktail list, and some very delicious wines also. Great experience.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food which is a deliciousGreat food which is a delicious take on southern comfort. Exciting drink options4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMDelicious! We had visitedDelicious! We had visited for dinner but this was our first brunch at Carriage House. My fiance is from North Carolina and we brought along a chef friend also from North Carolina and they thought the low country cuisine was fantastic! Favorites by far - the chicken and waffle and the cornbread for any meal.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMI LOVED this restaurant..II LOVED this restaurant..I adore the decore and the food is DELISH!!4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMAbsolutely the BEST food & serviceOne of the most amazing meals I've ever had. Also, one of the best waitresses. I will definitely return on all subsequent trips to Chicago. Shrimp&grits, skillet corn bread, fried chicken over these amazing thinly sliced sweet pickles, and fried green tomatoes w/ shrimp that I daydream about. Nearby is the Bedford (sister property) also a must see. An old bank vault!? Unique and why we love Chicago.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food from the kitchen,Great food from the kitchen, excellent service from the server, and top notch customer service from the hosts.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food was excellent. GoodThe food was excellent. Good opportunity to sample southern cooking if not familiar.
Enjoyed sharing plates with my husband, so we both sampled many dishes. Corn bread is the best ever. In fact all the sides were wonderful.
Would definitely return.3/20/2013 12:00:00 AMEVERYTHING about this placeEVERYTHING about this place was unbelievably amazing. We are DEFINITELY coming back!!!3/17/2013 12:00:00 AMCarriage House was simplyCarriage House was simply superb. Our server said it best, "we make soul food elegant". I couldn't have said it better. Every single dish we tried was excellent but I have to say the Shrimp & Grits was my favorite. I'm hoping that next time we'll save room for desert because the beignets looked heavenly.3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMMark Steuer is an elegantMark Steuer is an elegant and creative chef reflected in his eclectic and delicious preparations. He is also a cheerful and kind host.....a wonderful experience3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent brunch menu. ExcitingExcellent brunch menu. Exciting variety over most hum drum brunch spots.3/10/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was delicious, serviceFood was delicious, service was good, and atmosphere was cozy. We were seated on the porch, which I liked a lot better than the inside. The inside was very loud. Only complaint was that my husband had to wait 20 minutes for the valet to show up...not a good start to our meal.2/1/2013 12:00:00 AMFavorite restaurant in ChicagoCarriage House is my favorite restaurant in Chicago. Everything from the service, the decor and atmosphere, the cocktails, and the food, are all perfect. I'm from the South so much of the menu is familiar to me, but Carriage House elevates Southern food to a whole new level. Skillet cornbread with caramelized onions and smoked-foie gras butter. It doesn't get much better than that, except the oyster bake is even better than that. Every diner who eats there should get the oysters.11/25/2012 12:00:00 AM
