  • "Carriage House Restaurant is a very convenient place to dine before theater at The PaperMill Playhouse. The food is very good, but it is very loud there….so loud in fact, the wait staff cannot always hear what you are saying, making a mixup in what you are asking for. Also, if the wait staff cannot accommodate 3 separate bills for a table of six without it taking 10 minutes to do it after it is presented as one bill, they should not say it will not be a problem when you sit down for dinner and request this. (We could have figured it out ourselves). It makes it very difficult to have to "run" to get to our seats before the curtain goes up next door. It IS the most convenient restaurant in the "

  • "We were delightfully impressed with the prix fixed menu -- a choice for everyone. I had the lamb shank and it was cooked to perfection, a very tastey dish. We sampled all of the desserts and agreed the coconut cream parfait was the best! Kudos to the chef. And the wait staff was not so bad either -- very accommodating, attentive, cordial, and best of all, friendly. They seemed to enjoy being there in their crisp looking uniforms. All in all, a delightful evening."

  • "This is a great place for eating before going to Paper Mill Playhouse - Park early and you are there. Food is fine - nothing great - but certainly as good as most of the alternatives in downtown Millburn"

  • "I don't think that everyone knows just how good this little piece of heaven's food tastes. We are always pleased with our 3 course lunches. The food is so fresh and delicious! Planning to bring my son and daughter-in-law here for a special birthday lunch during the next show. The staff is also very attentive and helpful, too."

  • "This has become our favorite tradition before seeing one of the wonderful shows at the Paper Mill Playhouse. We make reservations well in advance for an early dinner leaving ourselves plenty of time to relax and enjoy the wonderful meal. We've never been disappointed - the meals and service are always great."

  • "Convenient to the theater in Milburn, food and service were good but it was pricey and the brunch is a price fixe menu --no ala carte available. I will choose another restaurant in town next time for a pre-theater meal."

  • "My reservation was for 4:15. we arrived at 4:00 and asked if we could sit at the bar and was told they didn't open until 4:30 but yes. There was a woman sitting at the bar on a computer who indicated to us they really were not open. she was very rude and outright showed how annoyed she was that we were there. the poor bartender was doing her best to make us feel comfortable. When i asked if there was a house wine the woman - in an annoyed voice told us NO only the wines listed on the wine list were available. I could clearly see wines behind the bar that were NOT on the wine menu. It really was the only thing about our visit that was not good. Every other person we encountered was wonderful and could not do enough for us. The food was good"

  • "This restaurant is on the grounds of PaperMill Playhouse in Millburn. My husband and I brought another couple to dine here before the show. There is a prix-fixe menu with three choices for appetizer, entree, and dessert. The entire meal is $40 and the menu rotates as the show rotates. The food is always good here and the portions aren't monstrous. One of our party ordered a dessert item which had run out, so the restaurant offered a substitute, banana ice cream with whipped cream, a drizzle of chocolate sauce and macadamias. We all ordered it and it was delicious. The restaurant could have used one more server but the service was gracious and the view of the grounds is very nice."

  • "We have typically gone to other restaurants in Millburn before attending the Papermill Playhouse. We decided to try the Carriage House. The food was very good but the fixed menu was very limited. The four of us ended up with the same main course because of the limited menu. They had a good wine list. It was VERY convenient for attending a show. The only thing they need to do is expand the menu somewhat. We also stopped in after the show for a nightcap to let the parking lot traffic empty out. They had a piano player at the bar which was very nice."

  • "Went on a Saturday night, pre-show. 3 team wait staff was overwhelmed. One gave said "too many couples here tonight". Uh, this is the subirbs and you have a show next door--what would oen expect. Poor experience, would not waste the time or energy."

  • "This delightful gem, on the campus of the Paper Mill Playhouse is getting better and better. The chef is open to substitutes with your entree - food is fresh and presented beautifully. There is a great buzz in the atmosphere of theatre goers enjoying their meals and a great glass or bottle of wine. Bar is beautiful and cozy. Service is attentive and professional with the chef visiting the tables asking if there are any questions about the menu."

  • "This restaurant located at the Papermill Playhouse, is quite good since the new Chef took over management. Everything served is very good. Service is good. The menu though understanadely limited offers a choice for everyone and for the most t part is quite healthy. Great for pre theater dinner since you only have to walk acroees the courtyard to the theater."

  • "We had tickets for the evening show at the adjoining Paper Mill Playhouse, so we tried the Prix Fixe dinner at Carriage House. The food was good enough for Prix Fixe, and a decent value. The atmosphere is delightful, a charming old building with the modern updates to make dining comfortable. Very pleased to be seated by the fireplace on a chilly night. The service, however, was disappointing. A different person brought each course, which definitely affected the timing. We felt rushed, and there were free tables, so there was no reason for the rush. We will try the restaurant again."

  • "Having been attending performances at the Papermill since I was a child, I had never had dinner before a show, and I was so happy I did. What a pleasure to arrive at 6:00, park easily and then stroll into the theatre. The 3 course dinner was very good-I thoroughly enjoyed my green salad, salad and dessert. The wine selection, though limited, was very good. I would definitely suggest making this part of your eveing."

  • "Very charming and relaxing atmosphere. Our group of six thoroughly enjoyed our pre-matinee lunch. The service was exceptional and we would most certainly return again."

  • "We are matinee subscribers to the Paper mill ,and hoped to dine there frequently. However, the luncheon served at the Carriage House was poor. The soup, salad and dessert were good, but the entrees, except for the bread pudding, were almost inedible."

  • "Nice staff and well-run restaurant. The price-fix menu choices were excellent and our waitress was very professional and pleasant, The price / value equation is very good. One suggestion - I'd add some lower cost bottles and glasses of wine to your inventory. Not everyone wants to pay $40+ for a bottle of wine. Should have some choices more in the $25-$30 range for both red and white bottles and per glass prices of $8 or so.."

  • "This is a nice, clean restaurant. The hostess was very nice and gave me the option of where I would like to sit. The Carriage House is right next to the Papermill Playhouse, so it is very convenient to park, dine and then see a play at the Papermill. The food was good, but there is a pre-fix menu before the play, and I wish there were more options."

  • "I loved my food & 2 of the other 3 people thought their food was good. Unfortunately, my 80 year old mother is a picky eater & thought the soup was ok and the salad was one of the worst ones she's ever had - she picked at it and ate very little. Many of us like a "gourmet" meal that is eclectic but there are a number of people that don't. I think you should have one or two "simple" items on the menu (like a sandwich) for basic eaters. We will continue to go there before all the Paper Mill performances because the rest of us are usually very happy!"

  • "The Carriage House is convenient for dinner when attending a show at the Papermill. The food portions are on the smaller side but usually tasty. The last time we were ther 12/2013 we were there for a 5:15 reservation and they ran out of ice cream...one of three dessert choices....how is that possible when there are at least 10 stores close by that carry ice cream...they were out of other selections as well and the menu is very limited...service was just ok."

  • "Dinning is set up to feed guests and get them out for show time at Papermill Playhouse and they do it so well. We never felt pushed or rushed. My elderly mother enjoyed the setting the food and the service. When we were done we just walked over to the playhouse and enjoyed the rest of our day."

  • "The lunch menu was fabulous. The lobster bisque was so tasty. The bread pudding was delish and just the right amount. The star was the prosciutto goat cheese and fig bruschetta. It was amazing. The salad that came with it left a little to be desired though. Somewhat bland. The waitress took my plate before I was done so be sure to speak up. Overall great experience."

  • "My mom and I decided to dine at the Carriage House before seeing the show at the Paper Mill Playhouse on Saturday night. The food was very good except for the cake which was stale. I knew it was going to be a fixed menu so I was not surprised. I can't see myself going back and certainly not if I wasn't seeing the show afterward. There are many very nice dinning places in the area to choose from. The biggest plus is the location; parking across the street and a 3 second walk to the Paper Mill."

  • "The menu was very limited. No accommodation for special requests. Music too loud. The salad was miniscule with only lettuce and tomato ( requested unions, cheese, olives, mushrooms, etc. which were not available). Not worth the prices of the meals. ( My wife could not have dessert, because she is gluten free . All of the desserts contained flour, except for ice cream, which they were out of.) Prior to dinner upon having wine, she requested to have something to nibble on , but they had nothing."
