CARPE VINO SERVES PERSONS 21 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER (YES...EVEN THOUGH WE SERVE DINNER). Located in what was originally a Civil War-era saloon in the heart of Old Town Auburn, Carpe Vino offers a unique setting for relishing great wine and stellar cuisine. Enjoy wine and dinner at the "Mary Pickford" wine bar with selections from all over California, or relax in our elegant dining room, surrounded by racks of wine.

Carpe Vino's innovative menu is California themed yet French-inspired. We offer fine dining tempered by our Old West heritage, with many core ingredients sourced from local farmers whom we know by name.

The menu changes virtually weekly, with new selections added based on farmer's market availability. Upwards of 40 wines are available by the glass; since Carpe Vino has a substantial wine shop business, bottles opened in the building are priced at retail plus $5.

  • "We hadn't visited Carpe Vino in several years and they have really stepped up their game. In other words the Sacramento Bee review was not hyperbole! Out of this world food and great wine prices - the steamed PEI mussels, Caesar salad and especially the kabocha squash agnolotti were wonderful. Loved the Mollydooker Carnival of Love Shiraz so much at $64.95 a bottle that I had to buy 5 more at the half-case price of $39.95. This is now one of our top 5 favorite restaurants in Northern California - right up there with Trokay, Bottega, Hock Farm and Ad Hoc! My only suggestion is to book dinner very early or very late since the acoustics only magnify the noise level from adjacent tables."

We are real foodies at heart and have dined at lots of critically acclaimed, Michelin stared, superstar chef restaurants around the country. This restaurant is a real find...in Auburn of all places. Chef Alexander uses local, seasonally fresh ingredients and gives them a world-class spin. Add to the fantastic food, the wine selection is amazing and inexpensive. The combined experience of great food and fantastic wine, is amazing!"

The wine list is extensive and there is no mark up on the cost of wine - a $25 bottle of wine purchased from the wine shop side is $25 when ordered while dining. The only draw back can be the noise level, otherwise an absolutely wonderful place to celebrate a special event or just a great dinner out."

The Chef is so artistic in his presentations, and how he comes up with his various dishes amazes us! Everything tasted fantastic. We hope he will keep the Hook, Line, & Sinker Prix Fixe dinner in the mix every year. Service was impeccable also, with Tom as our server. We live in Granite Bay and have always said we should go to Auburn more often to try the restaurants. We finally did and were so thrilled to find Carpe Vino. Formally from the East Bay, we found the restaurants in the Roseville lacking in good food. Now we have a new gem to visit regularly. The restaurant was having a special menu week featuring seafood. So many great choices, all of which were so fresh and perfectly cooked. Every detail was perfect. We will be back to try the regular menu and enjoy the fabulous wine."

  • "Dined with friends on a Wednesday. Wine bar was active, and only a few open tables for two in the dining rooms. Service was great. Tom gave us two great reccs for wines to accompany our meal. Started with mussels, fresh & tasty, served in sauce for dipping bread. Then, roasted chestnut and apple soup, excellent. Entree: Arctic Char. A pomegranate reduction, which was not overly sweet, complemented a parsnip puree. The char was cooked perfectly, as were the vegetables. For dessert, hazlenut panna cotta was well prepared, topped with a coffee gelee & roasted hazelnuts. We felt no pressure to leave as in some restaurants where they try to turn over tables as quickly as possible. A great evening.."

The menu rarely changes over the years, nor adds specials, so I ordered the Duroc pork chop for the first time and it was amazing…so tender with subtle layer flavors of bacon and apple. Everything is seasoned perfectly, no additional salt needed. Again we had Paul as our server, and always will ask for him; attentive and fun, yet not overbearing."

The venison my husband had was tender, moist and not a bit 'gamey'. We belong to their wine club, which is wonderful because you get a variety of great wines. If you love great food and great wine, then you MUST visit Carpe Vino!"

The food is excellent, i rank it on a par or better than many, many of the fine dining establishments in Sacramento, and this restaurant would be a strong competitor in SF. The dining area feels warm; brick and wood, not too dark, not too bright. Ambient noise is usually just loud enough to allow a private conversation. On our last visit, the room we were in had a large party, and the server graciously moved us to a quieter room. A great experience from start to finish. Now if I could just figure out how the chef does that amazing pork chop..."

  • "Enjoyed the prix fixe meal in February. It was delicious...especially the roasted chestnut soup. Excellent! I'd pass on the wild game dumplings in consommé...they were nothing special. The goulash was tender and served without sour cream or egg noodles...a wonderful variation! And, of course, the wine selection can't be beat. Paul, our waiter, is always fantastic. Gary, the owner, swung by our table to welcome us. This up-scale yet down-to-earth neighborhood spot is one of my favorites."

  • "We had the fixed-pris Alpine Dinner on Feb 19th and it was terrific. The carrot-chestnut soup could be the best soup I have ever had, though I only got a couple of spoonfuls from my husband. His venison was perfectly wonderful too. I had the Char and it was expertly grilled exactly right and assembled with beets, brussel sprouts. Just a wonderful mixture. Its a good thing they don't allow children, it would ruin the mood completely. Chef Alexander is constantly revising the menu to incorporate local farm fresh ingredients and he puts his own flare on top. Carpe Vino has an amazing wine club and wines to choose from. Everything could not have been more perfect. Our waiter, Paul, was exemplary in both his suggestions for our wine (which complemented our meal perfectly), and for extraordinary service! Carpe Vino is definitely an Auburn treasure. My hope is that it remains that way! P.S.   • "It was a rainy evening but a special occasion for my mother, brother and I. I just began using open table and this restaurant was recommended to me. The reservation process was right up my alley, uncomplicated. Pick a time and clip, done. We were met by a pleasant gentleman who took our coats and seated us. The wait staff was most accommodating with our wine choosing. We settled on a very nice one. When asked for an entree recommendation it was right on. The ceaser salad was just right. The hors d'oeuvres were delightful. And the desert with the Tawny Port was a beautiful finish. Our special occasion was just that special."
