CARPE VINO SERVES PERSONS 21 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER (YES...EVEN THOUGH WE SERVE DINNER). Located in what was originally a Civil War-era saloon in the heart of Old Town Auburn, Carpe Vino offers a unique setting for relishing great wine and stellar cuisine. Enjoy wine and dinner at the "Mary Pickford" wine bar with selections from all over California, or relax in our elegant dining room, surrounded by racks of wine.

Carpe Vino's innovative menu is California themed yet French-inspired. We offer fine dining tempered by our Old West heritage, with many core ingredients sourced from local farmers whom we know by name.

The menu changes virtually weekly, with new selections added based on farmer's market availability. Upwards of 40 wines are available by the glass; since Carpe Vino has a substantial wine shop business, bottles opened in the building are priced at retail plus $5.

  • "My husband and I went there for the first time, even though we've lived here for over twenty years. As my husband told our waiter (host?), Paul, the only thing better than the food, which was fabulous, was the service! I felt as though I were one of the judges at an Iron Chef competition. I loved the unique food combinations, especially the black pepper ice cream! Paul was kind enough to walk us through the menu fixe and recommend the perfect wine to complement our meal. It was the perfect place to celebrate our anniversary and will definitely be back."

At times the service is a bit haughty, but you can overlook that with a great meal accompanied by amazing wine. We have enjoyed several meals here and will continue to return. We were lucky enough to be out in the wine cellar so the noise level was perfect - the dining room can be extremely noisy. This is the perfect room to enjoy friends and the food."

  • "Since the moment we sat down, the service, food, and wine were excellent. This place is great for couples to small groups. The setting is intimate, and wine selection, exceptional. Preparation and presentation of food were beautiful and delicious. Our group of four had the scallop, lamb meatballs and tomato salad as appetizers. Lamb shoulder, swordfish and duck as entrees. All delicious, perfectly cooked, and savory. Highly recommend the restaurant for everyone."

  • "First off we went on a weekday. Be prepared for a longer dining experience but every minute well worth it. There was not one dish that we had that we felt warranted ANY improvement. I had picked the restaurant due to its excellent reviews. When we walked into the wine bar I was a little leery at first that it was too pub-like however we were quickly escorted into the back dining are which is lined from floor to ceiling with wine bottles and perfect for our intimate birthday dinner. Wine is sold at retail prices so we had two bottles of exceptional wine which in a typical restaurant wold have cost hundreds but here we spent 90 & 50. Great experience."

  • "Our first visit to Carpe Vino will not be our last. Our early evening reservation was ready, a lovely window table looking out at Old Town Auburn. Our server was thoughtful, kind, and professional. He explained the menu and wine list. I asked about the $5 add on price for a bottle of wine. He explained that the Carpe Vino Wine Shop sells the wine at retail price and the restaurant adds $5 for the service. It seems fair. Also, wine by the glass comes in three "pour" sizes and charges. The restaurant was sparkling clean and looked smart. We ordered and very soon enjoyed a delicious dinner! The lamb was wonderful! The prices were "right",I feel, for this award winning intimate restaurant. Try it and see if you feel that way too."

  • "My husband and I drove from Sacramento to have dinner with friends at Carpe vino; this was our first visit. We found the food to be extraordinary. The chicken liver pate appetizer was amazing, as was the duck and pork chop entrees. The waitress was one of the best we've ever had - she was attentive and very knowledgeable about both the food and the wines, and her suggestions were excellent. One of our best dining experiences ever!"

  • "Outstanding food. I ordered a lovely series of appetizers—white corn soup, roasted beet salad, and mussels. Perfect. (And I had just come from the fine dining world of San Francisco—Boulevard and Slanted Door.) I also liked that I could order small tastes of wine so I could try more winemakers and varietals. My server was knowledgeable about the wines and about recommendations for a single diner. She was friendly without being invasive. A great experience all the way around."

  • "This is our Special Occasion restaurant and we've eaten here 6+ times. The food is dependably exceptional -- it's a real treat that this quality is available in Old Town Auburn. For the first time, we were not very happy with the wait person... I think she had too many tables assigned to her and we were the "odd-one-out." This could be considered in the "normal" range, but for a restaurant of this quality and reputation, it was disappointing. Nevertheless we will ALWAYS consider it FIRST for a special occasion."

  • "Another great Prix Fixe dinner! This time it was 'Everything Corn'. Every dish was delicious and beautiful to the eye as well. Because of CV's great wine pricing (retail+$5 service) we were able to share two terrific bottles of wine at the table, a Pouilly Fume and a Sonoma Coast Pinot noir. Compared to any other fine dining restaurant in the region, the wine savings alone covered more than the cost of one of the meals!"

  • "We arrived early and had a glass of wine at the bar. We were also offerred complimentary tastes of other wines that were on special. We were seated on time and, as per our request, given our table of choice in a quiet corner due to my 78 year-old father's poor hearing Our server, Madison, was very polite with impeccable timing. It was a hot day and she plus the other servers never let our water glasses get empty. The courses came in a timely manner and at no time did we feel rushed to finish as in some restaurants The Owner, Gary, spent a few minutes at our table and being a local was inclined to offer a bit more in the way of conversation than most owners would dare. This is refreshing compared to the usual platitudes at most restaurants"

  • "We have dined quite a few times at Carpe Vino and the wonderful presentations have always been creative combinations of flavors and textures of fresh, seasonal foods. The fried green tomato appetizer was scrumptious, also the beet salad; and the lamb meatball appetizer was fabulous, sitting on a creamy (yoghurt?) sauce. The wine list is extensive and varied. Ask for the back room if you want a quieter table, the middle room is livelier. It's a wonderful place to dine for a special evening out."

  • "We are locals but have never dined at Carpe Vino, instead occasionally dropping by for an appetizer and a glass of wine. I made the reservation well in advance, and was slightly disappointed to be seated at the "viewing" table in the window. Not always my favorite table since your on display. Maybe they thought this was a great table, I don't know. Started the dinner off with champagne and two appetizers. Both appetizers were the picture of excellence, portion size was on the small side according to my husband, though I was fine with it. Dinner was ordered, and served within a reasonable amount of time, again beautiful presentation and absolutely cooked to perfection. Dessert followed and was delicious! Only complaint, room was a bit noisy."

  • "Hey, this place serves really good food! A little noisy, a wee bit lacking in the decor department, but the meals produced and presented are just excellent. The hummus appetizer, the corn soup, beet salad, lamb meatballs, duck, ravioli, halibut and finally peach profiteroles left our group of four happy, happy, happy, and happy. Could the ambience be better? Yes, but isn't it the food we can't cook at home what we go to restaurants for? Hard to imagine you can do better in Placer County... Or Nevada County for that matter."

  • "Carpe Vino isn't a restaurant you'd expect to find in a foothills town like Auburn. San Fran, maybe. Or even New York. The food and service are at that level. But how lucky are we to have this jewel so close to home. This time around the staff and food were simply at their best. Paul, our waiter, was wonderful, recommending a bottle of wine that we loved after first listening to our preferences. We ordered two appetizers, a salad, and just one entree to split between us. We had the fried green tomatoes, the lamb meatballs, the beet salad, then the white bass. Oh my....I love food. I love good food. I've traveled the world. But, man, this was one of the best meals in my life. Perfect tastes in the perfect order. Heaven!"

Their menu is sensational and it's the first time we both decide to try something we usually don't eat. I had the pork chop and my husband tried the lamb, which was so tender it was falling apart as he scooped up with his fork. We shared and were both blown away. So, that we've decided to make it our monthly date place. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to friends and family."

My wife and I had caeser salad that had to be one of the best I've ever had, but the sockeye salmon entree was simply unbelievable! The flavor and preparation are still memorable two days later. I called the restaurant and was told that they were fully booked. Not wanting to dis-invite my guest or cancel my reservation, I called again and this time the person on the phone checked with the restaurant manager who graciously said they would accommodate my extra person. My birthday celebration was a success! The highlights were the prosecco by the glass, the lamb merquez, the borscht and the asadao-style beef, and both desserts...food of the prix-fixe World Cup theme. Another excellent visit to Carpe Vino!"
