Diner Reviews
  • "Lovely location with a small but interesting yet classic menu. One feels like you have stepped back in time when you enter this dining room. Usually the service is top notch. Beautiful desserts--like little precious gifts to unwrap!"

  • "i bring my 88 yr-old Mother here everytime we have an excuse to eat out. She loves the service - the waiters always remember us and welcome us back. The valet parking is a plus. We enjoyed their new menu with the small plates - with an appetizer, it was just the right amount of food.....and it also left room for dessert! We have never been disappointed with our meals at Carolina Crossroads."

  • "Such a wonderful experience! The food was delicious and a cut above other places, the decor was beautiful and Old South, the service was friendly and professional. Only issue I have is the removal of some Southern classics from the menu- you can't take shrimp and grits off a menu in the Peidmont!"

  • "We have dined at Crossroads a number of times over the years and invariably have found the experience to be excellent; the current visit was no exception. The atmosphere was welcoming and warm. The service was attentive but not intrusive and was very well paced - a key feature for those who were attending a Memorial Hall concert later that evening. The food was very good. My wife loved the seared scallops with a butternut squash and bacon ragout and a fennel relish - all the flavors blended together well. I had a roasted beet and kale salad which was excellent. This was followed by "trout" and "shrimp and grits" and then a "bread pudding" all of which we enjoyed."

  • "My husband booked a table for two at the Carolina Inn to celebrate our wedding anniversary and we both had a lovely evening. The restaurant is very pretty, lovely cream and blue colouring, and the waiting staff are great. I had a very nice non-alcoholic cocktail, which was a nice change from my normal choice of coke or juice! The menu was great and I was very pleased to find that the restaurant uses as many local sources as possible. There was some dinner jazz playing in the background, just loud enough to hear but not so loud that it disturbed conversation. My husband's steak arrived a little cooler than he would have liked but the kitchen warmed it up nicely and we were given a discount on our bill. The desserts were fantastic."

  • "I chose Carolina Crossroads to celebrate my birthday and it did not disappoint. Our server, Jake, was outstanding throughout our entire meal. He was attentive, but not overly and exuded the type of southern charm that makes you feel at home. The manager, Carlos, was also a pleasure and made sure our night went off without a hitch. Overall, the dining experience was second to none and I highly recommend Carolina Crossroads at The Carolina Inn."

  • "The menu choices were 'different' with a decidedly country bent. The food was good and prepared well. The service was excellent."

  • "The triggerfish and later, the espresso creme brulee were both to die for!"

  • "Lovely ambiance in refurbished hotel on the campus of North Carolina University-Chapel Hill. Several interesting fish dishes as well as interpretations of Southern specialties."

  • "I go to the crossroads for business lunches. noise level is not disturbing for conversation, but I had to walk out of the room to take a phone call. I usually go for the buffet, which is excellent."

  • "The restaurant is lovely, as is the hotel. The servers are attentive and polite, though kind of stiff. A basket of bread and butter comes as part of your meal. We shared Caesar salad. I thought it was a bit sour. For lunch, my husband got the shrimp and grits (large size, which wasn't all that large), and I got the chicken pot pie with biscuits (it was really just the innards of a chicken pot pie with two biscuits on top). Dessert was the most disappointing - expensive and pretty good, but with very small portions. If you are a dessert person, don't eat here. If ambiance and attentive service is the most important thing to you, come here. If the quality of your food in relation to price is, go somewhere else."

  • "We've chosen the Carolina Crossroads on other occasions including a family Christmas brunch so we were prepared for the excellent food and service. Wonderful food -- great selection, delicious, and beautiful. Our table was taken care of very well with coffee and water refreshed frequently and dishes removed promptly. Everything was great until time to check out. The wait person delivered our checks with an explanation that an 18% gratuity was automatically added to bills when there is a request to split the bill (2 couples = 2 bills is not an uncommon request). An 18% mandatory gratuity for splitting a check (and for a buffet) is not something we've ever encountered and we will certainly think twice before returning to this restaurant."

  • "Carolina Crossroads is a delightful restaurant with delicious food. The adjoining bar is a great spot for a drink and a hamburger or more casual meal. The Carolina Inn, where the restaurant and bar are located, is a Chapel Hill treasure that has been recently updated and is a wonderful place for Chapel Hillians and visitors to go and enjoy a meal or tea."

  • "I took my wife here without the kids while the inlaws were in town to watch them. We had an early dinner. It is very classy and not ridiculously expensive, and the food and service were excellent."

  • "This was our first time to the Carolina Inn and we had heard that they had a wonderful brunch. We were greeted as soon as we arrived. The manager David, came over to introduce himself and to inquire as so how we had heard about this restaurant. The items on the brunch were delicious and not the normal things that you would see on a brunch table. We tried the cajun blackened catfish, the braised short ribs and the coq au vin to name a few. All the desserts were scratch made and I think my favorite was the lemon pie. I would definitely return to this restaurant and would highly recommend it."

  • "The Restaurant was outdated. The food was good, but not great for the prices. The ambience was not one for ages 20-50.... Service staff was attentive, and they knew the menu. Overall, it was okay, but not on my top ten."

  • "Wonderful dining venue in the historic Carolina Inn. The food was top notch and reasonably priced. The service was impeccable, but not overbearing, and the warm Southern ambiance was unbeatable."

  • "We dined at the Crossroads when we were staying at the Carolina Inn. This is a lovely and romantic setting with superb service. Great wine list and nice selection of wines by the glass! I had the seared scallops as an appetizer and braised pork shank. Both were flavorful at proper temperature. The pork was very tender as it should be. My wife had the chicken which she enjoyed. For dessert we both had the trio of ice cream in a tuile basket - this was a real treat. And the French press coffee was perfect. What a magical evening. Thanks to a great wait staff!"

  • "We enjoyed our granddaughter's 16th birthday celebration at Carolina Inn, and would go there again. This was our first time, and we had difficulty locating it, even though we had a map. The next time won't be so hard. Brunch far surpassed what I expected. Only one negative comment: the server was interested in socializing with someone else, and we were somewhat neglected. That was not a big consideration for a buffet brunch."

  • "As always, I enjoy dining at this restaurant. I ordered the salmon, which was delicious, but the portion was a little small. Next time, I will go for the buffet. Great food, all in all."

  • "Service was terrific as always. Ambiance is always restful, although lighting can make it hard to read menu for some people. The special was flounder (probably catch of the day); the fish was fine, but the "sides" seemed a little odd. Probably would not order it again. Was here about 3 weeks ago, and the pork shank was considered very good. Staff and parking people are always so pleasant as well. Very much appreciated."

  • "Party of 3 at 7:30. Restaurant very quiet and comfortable. Great service. Food nice (a lot of "locavore" and fresh fish; only one item (duck breast was cooked fine but very fatty) could have been better."

  • "I scheduled a reservation at your restaurant for my husband's 70th birthday. The food, service and ambiance were great. We had an enjoyable time. I especially appreciated the quiet table in the corner. I do not like loud restaurant noises. This was an intimate experience. Thank you also for the special birthday dessert with the Happy Birthday sentiment."

  • "We went for our anniversary on January 2. The place was practically deserted. The food was good, but not as good as we remembered it being in the past. The service was very good."

  • "The Carolina Crossroads was great for our Anniversary/New Year's dinner. The food was very good, although we had just come back from New Orleans, and that set a high bar (no pun intended) that almost no restaurant could match. Still, we enjoyed our meal a lot, and they even had a very good Carolina Pimm's Cup (the Pimm's Cup was invented in New Orleans). Go Heels!"

  • "We took friends from PA to lunch during the holidays to celebrate a special birthday. The food, the service and the twelve days of Christmas decorations throughout Inn made it a special occasion indeed."

  • "I gave my UNC Alumni husband dinner at the Carolina Inn (and a night) for Christmas. It was the perfect gift. After watching UNC win the Bowl Game in the adjacent bar, we had a fabulous meal. I highly recommend the Crispy Oysters appetizer! I will encourage our local friends (not all UNC fans) to take advantage of the Crossroads and the Carolina Inn - a wonderful escape and less than an hour away from Raleigh. We'll be back."

  • "Had a Christmas with 12 and 14 year old granddaughters to "create a memory." Fairly formal atmosphere, even for lunch. Very pretty decorations. Food was good, but not outstanding. The girls loved the occasion."

  • "Our family of 6 adults enjoyed a pre-Christmas dinner here. Great choice of entrees to cover the preferences of our group. All were pleased with selections. The kale salad was a special hit as well as the flounder and the goat cheese cake. The evening was enhanced by the spectacular Christmas decorations at the Inn."

  • "I booked The Carolina Inn for my wife and I to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary, having been familiar with the venue as our daughter was married there in 2001 -- and for its ambience and 15-minute drive from home. The staff were attentive, friendly and gracious. We had drinks in the bar (excellent service and drink) and had dinner in the Crossroads restaurant. Our children arranged for flowers on the table, champagne and after dinner an anniversary cake. Knowing in advance, the wait staff were very attentive and well-wishing. Our appetizer and entrees were superb. The next morning our breakfast was excellent and again so were the wait staff. Highly recommend the charming, elegant Carolina Inn and its restaurant."

  • "It is a wonderful time of year for a meal at Carolina Inn, whether in the restaurant or bar. The decorations and 12 days of Christmas create a festive mood. The food is reliably good and above average. One of my favorite local places to meet friends."
