Diner Reviews
  • "Every trip to Chicago include one meal at Carnival. This was our 6th. Food is always excellent. Meanie slightly tweaked and updated each time (we come once or twice a year) and the service is appropriately attentive. Ceviche flight was fabulous."

  • "I had dinner at the restaurant two nights ago. Our table had, Juan, as our server and he provided fair service. At the end of our meal, Juan, provided me with the bill, balance of $117.00 (for 2 ppl). I left him a $20.00 tip because he came across too comfortable with the table. When my guest and myself were walking out from the restaurant, Juan, approached me in a very uneducated matter and said "thank you for the $20.00 tip". I believe this reaction was very rude and unprofessional. I was a server for 8 years in fine dining and this behavior would not be tolerated. The food was delicious none the less."

  • "Food was very good and the staff was excellent- I have a gluten allergy and they were able to accommodate my restrictions. Only drawback, no real good gluten free desserts and we were seated within a row of tables which took away from our more romantic ideal night."

  • "My wife Patricia recommended Carnavale for dinner. We had a friend to visit from London, his first time to visit Chicago. We were all truly impressed. We are moving to the West Loop by Thanksgiving. Our condo should be complete by then, walking distance. My husband & I will be back soon. Thank you for a wonderful time & good food!!!!! Patricia"

  • "Carnivale was recommended to my girlfriend and I from a friend. It had a great atmosphere as soon as we entered the restaurant. The service was fast and responsive and had great suggestions as it was our first time being there. We were both overly satisfied with our meals and would easily make this a destination for lunch and dinner yet again. Thanks!"

  • "I was thoroughly impressed overall. I took my mom and sister here for a birthday celebration. This place was amazing! I'd love to have a wedding or large event here. The food was gourmet top notch. I love to eat out, and this place is top on my list. Upper price range, but do worth it! I felt very important and the place makes you feel "sexy" without an inappropriateness."

  • "I took a friend here for his birthday on the recommendation of another friend. The atmosphere was fun and vibrant; the food was amazing; and the Cotton Candy Birthday surprise was awesome. Needless to say my friend and I had an amazing time. I'll definitely come again."

  • "While the decor is outstanding, don't rely on the menu posted on Open Table to make your decision. The cheapest meal, the pasta, is $18, expect to pay $50 per person. When I asked about the menu posted on Open Table, I was told, it was 3 years old and they couln't figure how to change it. So the paella went from $13 to $32, in 3 years... The food was good, but for that price range, there are better restaurants."

  • "We went to a wedding there a while back and it was the best food ever so we decided to go dine there on a different occasion and we keep going back. The food is amazing I practically lick the plate clean."

  • "I have been there two times and food and service was amazing both times. They have great food and drinks. I love taking friends and family here for a nice dinner out."

  • "One of our faves, we go as often as we can, esp via Travelzoo.....I think the lamb w/pistachios was the best lamb I ever had in my life. If you are thinking about it, stop, make a reservation via Open table. Everything is good, most great. It is a bit loud, they keep the volume of the music up too high, but the quality of the food more than compensates."

  • "Went to Carnivale for the first time with my boyfriend as a surprise for his birthday and the whole experience was perfect! Made the reservation through OpenTable and even though we arrived a little late, we were seated right away. As many people have said, the main dining room where we sat is beautifully decorated...definitely the place you want to be seated if you can. It's so bright and vibrant which makes the ambiance great! Our server Javier was amazing and great for recommendations but also good for letting you enjoy your time and meals. Carnivale has great cocktails and amazing food...if you haven't tried this place yet, you should!"

  • "The food was delicious, as were the cocktails. The restaurant has a very unique ambiance, but is very loud."

  • "Be prepared to be dazzled by a psychedelic restaurant with more colour than Joseph's technicolored dream coat! Visiting from overseas we booked a night out looking for traditional Mexican on a Sunday night when other places were closed. Instead we got a contemporary menu to excite our palates! The mini taco starters were to die for. A visit to the restroom is like stepping down the hole into Alice's Wonderland. A great night out which will be remembered!"

  • "I'd been once before with a large work group and had a good time. This time, my wife and I went for dinner before an event downtown. The food was OK at best, our server was terrible and often AWOL, and they placed us in a dark room that felt like the place where they put people they don't want at the restaurant. We're in our mid-thirties, were dressed up, and aren't obnoxious tourists, so we expected better, esp. for a $100+ meal. We won't be going back..."

  • "Very nice restaurant with vibrant colors. The food was good but not great. Just seemed to lack a little bit of spice. The drinks are excellent, though. It's definitely a place worth seeing but now that I have, I don't feel the need to return."

  • "What a great place, Carnivale is!! Amazing ambiance, fantastic service, absolutely wonderful food and the drinks were absolutely great and not watered down! You feel like your just walked into an exotic, southern Spain/Cuban festival - surrounded in gorgeous jeweled-tone, vibrant colors, great music mix and fun atmosphere. This restaurant hits it on all pistons!!"

  • "My boyfriend and I decided to try Carnivale for dinner when we were in town for the weekend. The atmosphere is something to check out. Very vibrant and alive! When we first arrived, we stopped at the bar to order a couple margaritas. The bartender was awesome- made the margaritas from scratch and they were amazing! The host then sat us at a table on the patio, which had a spectacular view of the city. The food was good, nothing over the top. The server was sub par. The restaurant did not appear to be very busy (it was 9 pm), but we were stuck eating most of our dinner without anything to drink. The server took way too long to do anything we asked. This made the experience "okay". I wish I could say otherwise!"

  • "Food was great service was fair. Ordered appetizers and dirty plates remained on the table till food was delivered. Never offered second round of drinks. After asking for drinks to a long time to get them to the table.Saturday may not be the night to go there."

  • "The outdoor dining experience at Carnivale is one not to miss. The sights and sounds of the outdoors add that special "Chicago" experience to the excellent dining experience that awaits you. I tried the short ribs after the oxtail appeticzer. Both were excellent especially with my margarita. Enjoy the outdoors at this fine restaurant."

  • "Carnivale is one of my favorite restaurants. The food is outstanding and the service is normally very attentive and pleasant. On this occasion, we were celebrating my son's birthday. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closing early do to a "private event" and had a limited menu. I was very disappointed that this was not communicated when I made my reservation. Not only did my son not have the opportunity to order his favorite dish, but I felt that the service was slow and we were being rushed to leave. I have recommended this restaurant to many friends; I hope that this experience is an annomoly."

  • "Arrived at Carnivale, the main dinning area is beautiful, colorful, fun atmosphere. We had 8:00 reservations, (which I made 3 weeks in advance) the restaurant was not packed. So I was surprised, we were seated in a small dining area in a back room. It was dark and secluded. Much better for a date. Our service and food were very good. I should have asked to be moved. I will take guests again, but will defiantly request the main dining area."

  • "Have eaten dinner here several times in the past & always enjoyed. Decided to treat a friend to brunch for her birthday. We had a wonderful brunch, with interesting & different menu items. It was an unexpected treat to have entertainment from the opera singing staff from the charcuterie counter followed by a female string trio decked out in hot pink wigs playing very enjoyable classical pops. Key lime French toast was fabulous & the sangria was the perfect touch. Will definitely return."

  • "We had a nice time and our food was good. Our service was a little spotty. They are way overpriced, but that is the nature of the neighborhood and the ambience."

  • "The room is great, the menu is creative, the food is excellent and our service with great. Our sever anticipated our needs and paced us perfectly. There is a vibrant feel with the big and colorful main room room and the dress of the diners gave it the feeling that this is a hot spot. We took out of town friends who always expect something good when they visit Chicago and this lived up to expectations."
