Diner Reviews
  • "For the most part the food and ambiance were fantastic, such a fun theme and decor! The only downfall of the night was the service. I had made a reservation a week or two in advance for a large group of people for my birthday and they could only take 6 because their big table was already being used. Also, our reservation was for 830 pm and we arrived at about 8-15 and we still had to wait until about 905 to get seated. Although I absolutely loved the place and would recommend it, if I ever made a reservation and had to wait one more time lets just say that would be the last time I would come back."

  • "Carnivale is a very vibrant restaurant -- bright and colorful, full of whimsy. Don't miss out on the cotton candy/crackerjacks dessert!"

  • "My second time at Carnivale. I will start off by staying the food is amazing, however price point is a tad bit high for what you are actually getting. You must get the side of carmelized plantains. Our reservations were at 8pm - by 845 when we were not sat I approached the staff and asked what was going on with our table, they mentioned that there were numerous people waiting and that people were dining longer than they had anticipated. Not wanting to wait any longer we sat in the area right behind the bar which was still okay. Our waitress was very nice but NOT attentive at all. The music was AWFUL. Why are you playing Pop hits of the 90's at a Latin Fushion bar!?"

  • "Carnivale is where you go to have a great time and enjoy great food. The atmosphere cannot be beat. The food is very tasty and they have added to the menu which makes the selections even harder. I have never had a seafood dish there that I did not like. My husband(the meat eater) always enjoys a steak there. Great appetizers also. The only thing I cannot understand is why they used to have good bread at each table and that is gone."

  • "Little loud for conversation with more than 2-4 people. Also, pricey for the portion size of appetizers."

  • "We love Carnivale, but this was not the stellar experience we're used to. The host went to seat us directly next to a party of six when most of the rest of the upper dining room was empty. We asked to move and have a little more space. Within about four minutes of getting our appetizers, our meals came, leaving us no time to enjoy the appetizers. My meal wasn't correct; my boyfriend's was. When I got my real meal, the steak was medium rare, but I asked for medium well. I sent the steak back, and when it came back it was medium, but I was so hungry that I just ate it. Also, when I started eating, my boyfriend was done with his dinner. Our server apologized, but there was nothing offered to compensate. It was a disappointing night for sure."

  • "Well done on all fronts, ambiance was vivid but not too crazy. Food prepared quickly but didn't leave out any tastiness, server was on spot with recommendations, bar tender was freaky fast without compromising deliciousness of drink."

  • "Friends had told us about Carnivale, but we hadn't had a chance to visit until earlier this week. So glad we did! Our waitress Stephanie was fantastic...turned out that we chose her favorites in our order (no hints from her!) and enjoyed them mightily. Strip steak was melt in your mouth, as were the lamb chops. For apps, we chose the fish tacos, best I've ever had, and the ropa viejo which was superlative. Great sangria and awesome banana cream pie dessert. this is definitely the spot for special occasion or just a wondrous treat with friends. By the way, we ate in the bar area, which is gorgeous, with island-y palms and upholstery. Love this place!"

  • "We were there for a family celebration. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu all of which looked good. We chose appetizers, entrees and dessert. Food was fantastic along with the presentaion. We will return."

  • "I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Carnivale. I made a reservation and we were seated a few minutes after we arrived. Kate was our waitress and she was great. She had a great personality and tons of fun. The food and drinks were so yummy. Also, the atmosphere wad bright and vibrant. The next time I'm in Chicago I will definitely go back."

  • "I put Carnivale on my to-do list during my visit to Chicago, since I had been there when I lived in Chicago - more than six years ago. My husband and I had a great time and a great meal!"

  • "We usually sit inside Carnivale to see the beautiful colors in the dining area, but we have never sat outside to oversee the Dan Ryan; this time we sat outside at night and it was very nice. The drinks - the Ginn Rickey was very refreshing and the appetitizer - Ropa was delicious, could have made a meal off it. Then the steak - Arrachera with brown rice and side of mash potatoes was also outstanding (as usual). The service and the food were Outstanding (as usual) and this is no doubt one the best restaurants in Chicago."

  • "Wonderful food and great atmosphere! We were out celebrating a special birthday and you made it very special. All of the food was very unique/ We plan on coming back for more."

  • "We were excited to return to Carnivale after a wonderful first impression. Our original waitress was attentive and cared about us as diners. This second experience was not the same. We sat there for over 1o minutes before approached and as soon as he saw that we had a Travelzoo voucher, he cared more about getting us to order the most expensive entree (you are taxed and a 20% tip is automatically added to the total) than serving. He even brought the wrong drink to start. When my husband did order the $42 NY strip, the steak sat in grease in the pan. Too bad because rather than encouraging us to return, we will now explore other delicious dining options in Chicago!"

  • "First time here and definitely will be back. The decor is really neat inside, though it is very very loud so while a lot of aspects make this a great date place just beware of struggling to hear each other. The food- Grilled octopus, empanadas, and shrimp ceviche were all awesome. The ice cream cake for dessert was to die for. Definitely recommend!"

  • "Great atmosphere. Great service. Good food. Large selection. Reasonable prices. Acoustics were such that for the large number of people there, it was not too loud. Valet parking was a bargain. We will be back."

  • "It's a great place and the food is really good. Because its a specialty restaurant the menu is limited and some of the prices are a little high for the portions. Overall, it's a great place to go every now and again."

  • "Carnivale is a great place for bringing large groups or just 2. The decor is wonderful. Think of stepping into a hip 60s Havana bar and restuarant. I always find something new nuance with each visit. during the summer they have seating on the "balcony". It overlooks 90/94. I would recommend drinks not dining for the balcony. Just me. Others were enjoying it just fine. In spite of the view, it is beautifully done. The food is amazing. It is hard for me to resist the Paella. It is soooo good there. Strip steak is also a great choice. Can't remember the name right now. The service is outstanding and very accommodating. Always great suggestions."

  • "I had dinner at the restaurant two nights ago. Our table had, Juan, as our server and he provided fair service. At the end of our meal, Juan, provided me with the bill, balance of $117.00 (for 2 ppl). I left him a $20.00 tip because he came across too comfortable with the table. When my guest and myself were walking out from the restaurant, Juan, approached me in a very uneducated matter and said "thank you for the $20.00 tip". I believe this reaction was very rude and unprofessional. I was a server for 8 years in fine dining and this behavior would not be tolerated. The food was delicious none the less."

  • "Every trip to Chicago include one meal at Carnival. This was our 6th. Food is always excellent. Meanie slightly tweaked and updated each time (we come once or twice a year) and the service is appropriately attentive. Ceviche flight was fabulous."

  • "Food was very good and the staff was excellent- I have a gluten allergy and they were able to accommodate my restrictions. Only drawback, no real good gluten free desserts and we were seated within a row of tables which took away from our more romantic ideal night."

  • "My wife Patricia recommended Carnavale for dinner. We had a friend to visit from London, his first time to visit Chicago. We were all truly impressed. We are moving to the West Loop by Thanksgiving. Our condo should be complete by then, walking distance. My husband & I will be back soon. Thank you for a wonderful time & good food!!!!! Patricia"

  • "Carnivale was recommended to my girlfriend and I from a friend. It had a great atmosphere as soon as we entered the restaurant. The service was fast and responsive and had great suggestions as it was our first time being there. We were both overly satisfied with our meals and would easily make this a destination for lunch and dinner yet again. Thanks!"

  • "I was thoroughly impressed overall. I took my mom and sister here for a birthday celebration. This place was amazing! I'd love to have a wedding or large event here. The food was gourmet top notch. I love to eat out, and this place is top on my list. Upper price range, but do worth it! I felt very important and the place makes you feel "sexy" without an inappropriateness."

  • "While the decor is outstanding, don't rely on the menu posted on Open Table to make your decision. The cheapest meal, the pasta, is $18, expect to pay $50 per person. When I asked about the menu posted on Open Table, I was told, it was 3 years old and they couln't figure how to change it. So the paella went from $13 to $32, in 3 years... The food was good, but for that price range, there are better restaurants."

  • "One of our faves, we go as often as we can, esp via Travelzoo.....I think the lamb w/pistachios was the best lamb I ever had in my life. If you are thinking about it, stop, make a reservation via Open table. Everything is good, most great. It is a bit loud, they keep the volume of the music up too high, but the quality of the food more than compensates."

  • "Went to Carnivale for the first time with my boyfriend as a surprise for his birthday and the whole experience was perfect! Made the reservation through OpenTable and even though we arrived a little late, we were seated right away. As many people have said, the main dining room where we sat is beautifully decorated...definitely the place you want to be seated if you can. It's so bright and vibrant which makes the ambiance great! Our server Javier was amazing and great for recommendations but also good for letting you enjoy your time and meals. Carnivale has great cocktails and amazing food...if you haven't tried this place yet, you should!"

  • "Be prepared to be dazzled by a psychedelic restaurant with more colour than Joseph's technicolored dream coat! Visiting from overseas we booked a night out looking for traditional Mexican on a Sunday night when other places were closed. Instead we got a contemporary menu to excite our palates! The mini taco starters were to die for. A visit to the restroom is like stepping down the hole into Alice's Wonderland. A great night out which will be remembered!"

  • "Very nice restaurant with vibrant colors. The food was good but not great. Just seemed to lack a little bit of spice. The drinks are excellent, though. It's definitely a place worth seeing but now that I have, I don't feel the need to return."
