  • "While visiting my son at Penn State this past weekend, we came across this wonderful little restaurant. Although we were not immediately seated in the library (the maitre d gave a lame excuse that some people had shown up a half hour early for their reservation, but we were on time), the rest of the evening made up for that little snafu. Drinks and hor's deurves were delicious! The ambience, food and service were outstanding! Carnegie House is certainly well worth the ten minute drive from campus!"

  • "Everything was great but we had a 7:00 reservation and were not seated until after 8:00. Oddly enough the dining room was not full but they could not seem to get things out of the kitchen. We would try it another time though since the setting and staff were lovely and the food was very good."

  • "The food was delicious albeit a bit pricey. The restaurant was also very noisy even though it was not extremely crowded. I would return but only for celebrations or special events."

  • "A drive outside of State College but a dining experience not to be missed. From the cocktails and complementary appetizers in the library through the dessert, every moment is special. The best dining in the area."

  • "I ate there with several friends and we had just a lovely time in a beautiful setting. The food was delicious, the service good, and the setting was stunning. I'll be back."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary at the Carnegie House Restaurant. The food, ambiance and staff were all wonderful. Our table set decorated nicely with memorabilia from our wedding and honeymoon in which the staff gladly set up. I highly recommend this location."

  • "Had a lovely dinner, fabulous food and were able to converse throughout the meal. The restaurant was quiet which made it very enjoyable. The seating area prior to dinner again provided the ability to talk. The food was great - the chef rocks!"

  • "Very nice for a romantic time. Disappointed in the service as it did not seem to match the atmosphere or the food. The glass of wine ordered appeared as $12 on the menu and was $15 on the bill. We ordered dessert and were served the wrong one. The food was very good and the atmosphere was unique for a special occasion. Maybe the servers just had an off night… I have dined with them on other occasions and the service was excellent. I was disappointed this time but would still go back again. "

  • "Always a great place to dine for special occasions. Service is impeccable and food is excellent. The ambience is delightful -- small and intimate with everyone keeping their voices down in respect to other diners. Staff is always available while not being over bearing. We come here 4 or 5 times a year and we are never disappointed."

  • "My husband and I celebrated our anniversary with dinner at the Carnegie House. The service, from the time we stepped in the door, was attentive but unobtrusive. We enjoyed our drinks setting and the chef's complimentary appetizers in the library. We never felt rushed, but our next course was always right there, on time and beautifully presented. The dining room was quiet and intimate. Our dessert came with "Happy Anniversary" in chocolate around the outer edge. A perfect ending to a delicious dinner!"

  • "We booked via Open Table not being aware of the Fine Dining setup and arrived with our Motorbikes in a still appropriate look. However, when entering the bar for predrinks we'd been ignored and also when to other guests the Menus had been presented already I had to remind service staff that we had a booking. Only then staff started to be a bit more friendly. Food was excellent and we would recommend the restaurant at any time. However Staff should be a bit more flexible with their guests. Dr Ralf Brandt"

  • "The food was very good even though its rather pricy (especially for State College). The environment was very stuffy, maybe it was just the night we were there but very dull! Funeral Parlors have more excitement than this place. Some may like that but it wasn't for us. We may return again for a special occasion but it will not be a common spot for us."

  • "Took my parents for their 45th wedding anniversary - was a perfect fit. Started with cocktails in an intimate waiting area - took order there - so when seated your first course arrived shortly after you did. Staff was very friendly, but not overly attentive. Food was outstanding from appetizers to dessert. Highly recommend the ice cream made on premises - among the best gourmet ice cream I have ever had (and this coming from someone who used to work in a gourmet ice cream store). Well worth the price!"

  • "This was my third experience at Carnegie House and was quite disappointing, unlike the previous visits. Two different lamb dishes were both tough and fatty, an unusual combination. Desserts were mediocre, again a change from previous visits. Service was excellent, as usual. It was a very busy evening and perhaps that was the problem, but I'll probably hesitate to book again at CH."

  • "The food is grossly over-priced and extraordinarily underwhelming. My "medium" chop was raw. The side dishes would have been better from the frozen food aisle at Wegmans. The food wouldn't be worth it at half the price."
    Dined on 3/20/2014
  • "Great atmosphere but food and low numbers of fellow diners are downside. Prices wildly inflated for the quality of food, service and drink options."

  • "Very nice welcome when you walk in. We were seated in the library where drink orders were taken and we were given menus. Drinks were good but very strong (almost too strong). Hot hors d'oeuvres were given next. We received Chicken satay and potato croquette which were very good. We were seated when our first course was ready. This was our first time there and it is a very welcome change to the dining experience. I had the filet mignon which was cooked perfectly and bean and andouille soup appetizer. My girlfriend had roasted beet salad and butternut squash ravioli. All the food was excellent. It is very pricey but for a special occasion it was excellent."

  • "What a wonderful experience we had ! Upon arrival our party of 4 went by the fireplace for a cocktail and a complementary appetizer what a lovely idea! We then proceeded to place our appetizer and dinner order. We were then escorted into the dining room where we ate a most delicious appetizer and dinner....the dessert was amazing as well! Just wanted to let you know what a phenomenal experience we had! Can't wait to come back this is a true gem!"

  • "Great dining experience. We were sat down in a lounge area to look over the menus and order drinks. Complimentary h'our derves were a nice touch. We ordered our meals before sitting down and upon being seated we were met with our soups. The food was delicious although the price for the entrees was a little steep. Overall a great experience for a Valentine's date with my wife."

  • "The Carnegie House is the best restaurant in State College. The food is fabulous, the service is impeccable, and the dining room is the perfect noise level. Highly recommended."

  • "Service was very friendly, and the relaxed atmosphere was great. I really like the format of being able to sit in the lounge area for a drink while perusing the menu. I have gone to this restaurant only twice in the last few years. Both times, the food was disappointing. Nothing was ruined or inedible, just lower quality than one should expect from a restaurant with this atmosphere and this price point. (Most recently, my tuna carpaccio was bad, my wife's crab cake was very good, other appetizers and entrees were so-so.) I hope that improvements can be made in the quality of food as this would be a nice place to go in an area with limited fine dining options."

  • "attention to detail amazing! food amazing! service amazing! staff went ABOVE AND BEYOND as we had large group 3 cars full and all lost; someone from restaurant drove to find us and escort our convoy to restaurant! AMAZING!"

  • "Evening started with Wine in the library. Very nice surroundings. But noisy with other groups nearby. Meal was very tasty. I would visit again to try other dishes. The dining room holds 35-40 diners. Again it was very noisy. If you want to have quiet, private conservations this is not the place to dine."

  • "The food was quite bad, and one thing was truly memorable. The words 'seared foie gras,' bring a certain picture to mind. What that picture definitely is not is a plate containing four paper-thin slices of something gray that has been carefully cooked to death and then drained to be absolutely certain that no fat at all remains. Add that to the dry turkey and the cold overcooked prime rib, and it was a meal so dreadful that it became amusing. When we mentioned how bad it was back at our hotel, we were told that it is well regarded and we can't expect to find Philadelphia food in State College. It seems strange, because if that is the case, we shouldn't expect the Philadelphia prices in State College, either. Funny, that."

  • "I was a little disappointed in the level of service...compared to previous visits. We never recieved our free appetisers, until I asked for them at the table. Also, we were never asked if we wanted dessert, coffee, etc,. This, I found very aggravating. We had to flagdown a waitress for our check and still, no offer for coffee or dessert! I was very surprised!"

  • "Appetizer and drinks served in a softly lit living room atmosphere allows the small dining room to accommodate main courses. We enjoyed the lobster bisque first course, but we found the veal masala and especially the steak oversauced. The steak was completely overpowered. The vege sides completed an attractive plating. We would probably return if a friend specifically wanted to eat there, but not on our own."

  • "What a pleasant surprise to find this oasis of civility and good taste in a town where dining establishments are not generally associated with such concepts. The experience and the food were both delightful, yet the Manhattan-level prices seemed a bit out of place in the Toftrees setting. Service was exceptional both during cocktails in the library and dinner in the dining room, although the small size and acoustics in the dining room made it nearly impossible to enjoy a private conversation. All in all, a wonderful and relaxing alternative to the standard diner/fast food experience at the establishments downtown...but at a price, of course!"

  • "We heard mixed reviews before we went about the slow service, but were delighted to be able to take our time... in and out in 90 minutes isn't slow when we went to relax for our 25th anniversary. Loved sitting in the library before dinner and could've stayed there longer."

  • "My wife and I have been celebrating our wedding anniversary at Carnegie House for a number of years. It has always been good but it has noticeably improved in the last several years. We will be looking forward to returning in 2014."

  • "Our dining experience began with drinks and complimentary appetizers in a separate area. We were presented with menus and enjoyed our wine before ordering. When our first course was served we were led into a small dining room which was full yet felt uncrowded. Every bit of our meal was delicious…I had the Chilean Sea Bass and it was the best I have ever eaten! My husband and two sons had filet mignon and lamb and all were prepared perfectly. It was pricey but an excellent choice for a fine meal or special occasion. We will be back!"

  • "We were tremendously impressed with being escorted to a lounge area before being seated in the dining area. We were served drinks as we sat comfortably in a corner area, perusing the thoughtfully illuminated menu! (The led backlighting on the menu was especially impressive!) Our server took our food order after we had sufficient time to absorb the offerings, and then we were served an appetizer "on the house". When a hostess came a little later, to let us know that our soup was being served, she escorted us to our table. The Lobster bisque was the best I have ever had. Hearty, and flavorful come to mind. I could taste the sherry that had been added, but in a good way, enhanced the flavor. Chilean Sea Bass was best I ever had, as well!"

  • "We have been staying at The Carnegie Inn for several years and although we sometimes like to find other restaurants in the area, their restaurant continues to be the top of the class in this region. The ambiance is terrific with sitting down in their library and ordering prior to being seated..very classic and makes for a nice relaxed evening. The convenience of lighted menus as wells shows the thoughtfulness of the establishment. A wide mix of food choices...but always enjoy the Tuna Carpaccio for appetizers. Salads are always fresh and plentiful. Entrees have included some great duck, amazing Chilean Sea Bass and a nice selection of beef. Of course, they have a great wine list as well. Servers also add to the great experience."

  • "Celebrated our aniversary and it was memorable. Relaxing before the dinner in a living room atmosphere and then being shown to the table is a grat feature that we love. Food was very good and well prepared. Wine was outstanding ans presented and served very nicely. Service was first rate. We will be back before the next anniversary...."

  • "The food is nicely presented. We appreciated the tasty "gifts from the kitchen" served in the library. Although the salmon was bland, the filet was tender. The timing of the service was a bit off (e.g., the bread was delivered after the salad and the wine was delivered after the entrees). The kitchen also ran out of several items (e.g., at dinner: the best cabernet & the special desert; at breakfast: the orange & apple juices, the rye toast). They appear to try hard, but not hard enough."
