A word from Carmine's - Washington DC
Carmine’s is a family style, value-driven restaurant concept with locations in NYC, NJ, Nassau Bahamas, and Washington DC. Restaurateur Artie Cutler created Carmine’s with one goal in mind: to open a restaurant that would serve every meal in the style of an Italian American wedding feast, featuring extra large portions of home-style antipasto, pastas, seafood and meat entrees served on extra large platters designed for sharing. Carmine’s is the perfect place to casually enjoy friends and family over great food and wine, with excellent service, the way it used to be at grandma’s house.Continued

  • "Food was great and the staff was very accommodating when I needed to adjust my reservation."

  • "We had a party of 8 people, didn't haven't to wait for our table. The food was excellent and hot. The waitress suggested some of the entrees for us and it was just perfect."

  • "I have been to Carmine's in NYC and Atlantic City a number of times. While I am accustomed to the loud environment our experience in D.C. was very disappointing. We were a party of 7 and had a reservation and were seated timely. After being seated for 20 minutes we were never approached by a waiter/waitress. I had to get up and approach a Manager. He came to our table and apologized, took our drink order and then turned us over to someone else. The waiter seemed rushed with everything. We ordered appetizers and asked if we could order our entree and pasta in a few minutes. He came back 3 minutes later and rushed us through ordering. Our food proceeded to come out one course on top of another. The table was filled with plates. Just terrible."

  • "To enjoy the variety of Carmine's, one needs to dine with a group. I used the excuse of getting my family together to celebrate my upcoming retirement. I pre-ordered 3 appetizers and 5 main dishes. My family especially liked the calimari, Carmine's salad, meatballs, eggplant parmigiana, chicken marsala, and fresh sauteed spinach. For dessert, we had the "Titanic," a brownie-bottomed banana split with multiple scoops of chocolate and vanilla ice cream, strawberries, fresh pineapple, chocolate syrup, and "Cumulus Nimbus" clouds of whipped cream. It was a big hit, and we ate everything. My only complaint is that we were seated at a very long table so it was difficult to talk to anyone who wasn't sitting either across from you or next to you."

  • "Great authentic Italian Family Style!! We love Carmine's in New York and this was our first time at the DC restaurant. Food was soooo good and plenty to eat for our group. The Friday nite chicken special was unbelievably good. When you dine at Carmine's you feel like your dining in Italy with lots of good food and wine. Can't wait to go back."

  • "Eating at Carmine's is an experience. It is funny seeing people's faces when the massive plates of food arrive at their table. I have been to both the NY and DC locations & live this place. Unfortunately during my recent visit I felt like I was invisible. Our waiter hovered over a large group near us and left our party of 2 feeling like we were shipwrecked."

  • "The restaurant was great and the food was very good and we really enjoyed the experience and highly recommend it!"

  • "This was my second time dining at Carmine's and just like the first time the food was amazing. My family and I enjoyed the Manicotti and Lemon Butter Chicken for dinner, and then I was surprised with the Titanic for my birthday dessert. The only down side to the whole experience would be with the service we received. It started out good, we were greeted as we entered by a staff member, then by a friendly host and then by our wait staff. However during our dinner, we barely saw her other than to see if we needed refills, but by then we were done with our meal and ready for the check. The restaurant wasn't that busy and she had two other tables within a few feet of ours."

  • "Went with a group of 8. Herded in like cattle and to feed and move along. The food was fine - certainly nothing special - the service was perfunctory. There are too many other food restaurants in Penn Quarter for me to go back to this one."

  • "We had Veal Parm. Perfectly pounded out. And Penne Ala Vodka perfectly not over sauced. Great service!"

  • "Great Family restaurant and the price is right for families too."

  • "The food is great, consistent with NYC 's original location on the Upper West Side. Service was a bit slow which is unusual. My only complaint is that like NY, they serve wine is a small water glass...bring back the wine glass!"

  • "Went to Carmine's with parents visiting from out of town all agreed food was outstanding. Would have given service a little higher if - after ordering bottle of wine it was not simply just plopped on table for us all to help ourselves. Also we had to keep asking for water. Only one pitcher for a table of 8. Should not have to ask. Don't want to give impression we were not happy just needed a little more TLC. Lasagne, chicken pram and tiaramisu were outstanding. Will definitely bring friends."

  • "While waiting for my guest, I sat for about 20 minutes after being seating with no one coming to take even a drink order. I finally went to the bar and got my own water and iced tea. Apparently, after being told what happened, the waiter stepped up and was very attentive for the rest of the meal. The food was great."

  • "Unless you are just wanting a ton of very poor Italian food and how it taste does not matter, skip this place. Frankly Olive Garden is better. Yes it is family style but unless your party all like the same dishes, you will pay for a ton of food you while have to take home or not eat. Service is slow and the staff not attentive. I had to poor my own water or die of thirst."

  • "We wanted a pasta restaurant near our hotel to go with the kids. We probably found the beat Italian restaurant ever. The food was awesome. The service excellent and the portions gigantic. We took two pasta plates and that fed 6 people and there were leftovers. The calamari appetizers were very good. The main dishes were spaghetti meatballs (6 huge super good meatballs) and the second plate was an awesome rigatoni w/sausages and brocollis with red sauce. I highly recommend this place."

  • "The food was great, but the service was absolutely pitiful. After waiting on our drinks for 30 minutes, the waitress finally came back to tell us they were out of the ingredients to make the drinks. It also took her 15 minutes to get us the check once we asked for it. Extremely disappointed in the service."

  • "Appetizers and entrée were great, but the tiramisu was terrible. Like a big, whipped cream clown pie."
    Dined on 6/29/2014
  • "Best for groups. So easy to split the family style platters when there are 6 or more at the table. Don't miss the eggplant parmigiana -- it is the best we've ever had."

  • "Carmine's was a perfect place to take a teenage boy- excellent food in large portions. Great value for a dc restaurant as well."
    Dined on 6/26/2014
  • "The food is good. The sizes are large, family size to share, the chicken scalopine were very good"
    Dined on 6/25/2014
  • "There were not any pure vegetarian menu items. Waitress didn't really understand vegetarian. Even the salad had cubes of ham and salami. If there were vegetarian items - didn't see them on the menu - had to ask. I believe there was a vegetarian lasagna but had to ask."

  • "My group of 20 had a 5:15 reservation before the Katy Perry concert at Verizon. We chose Carmine's as we assumed they were used to handling groups of people. Sadly our service was so bad that all the other groups that came in after us made it to the show on time. We ended up missing the opening act. We ordered a bottle of champagne, received it after 1/2 hour! Our server seemed way more interested in other tables than ours. Overall I just will not come back here."

  • "Took the 15 year-old here before a show at the Verizon Center. The food was good and the staff was just SUPER nice."
    Dined on 6/24/2014
  • "Family style - large portions; good for a large group of 8 of us, including children. We were seated in a corner/somewhat tight space. I felt at times the server kept trying to push us towards to the most expensive options. We ended up ordering a lot of food and a massive bottle of wine. The food was decent - nothing to write home about."

  • "It should not take 20 plus minutes for drink service, especially when three managers are standing at the bar. We actually had to walk up to the bar to get drink refills. Food was good, but the service was TERRIBLE. Our server was rude when she actually spoke to my party. We had to go over our order three times before she got it right. It seems that even with her incompentence, plenty of support staff could have helped and they didn't. I can't believe that someone can actually stay employed as a server given her behavior. She did not monitor our needs in even a minimal manner. The glasses were terribly dirty at this restaurant. We would have told a manager if any of them would have ever bothered to stop by our table."

  • "The wait staff was very nice, but so busy they could not be as attentive as I would wish. The food was very good, but not really special. I would definitely go again."

  • "Let me start this review by saying that I love the Carmine's in NY. It is a great spot for families- great food & service. The Carmine's in DC unfortunately does not have a single thing in common other than the family style menus on the walls. We had a 7:45 reservation and sat down a few minutes early. The server took 15 minutes to get to our table at which point we ordered drinks and apps. That order took 25 minutes to arrive. While we were quick to order & didn't linger (we only ordered 2 entrees and no salads/desserts), our meal took over 2 hours. The server didn't seem to care that we were looking around the restaurant trying to see where our drinks & meals were. The wine was undrinkable and the food mediocre. Don't waste your time!"

  • "Very large servings of delicious food, good for a large group of friends or family. Enjoyable meal, but this is not diet food!"

  • "I've eaten at Carmines several times and I enjoy the family/group friendly atmosphere. In the past, my servers have been great. This Saturday, NOT at all. Our table was elevated two steps up and our server would not come up the two steps to talk with us. He didn't explain the menu. He kept yelling 'What happened!?' as a way to get us to repeat ourselves. The only time we got any attention was when his colleague that was not even serving us came up the stairs and suggested wine that he liked. His colleague was very nice and friendly, but his colleage wasn't serving us and luckily came back to give us our wine. There was a lot of yelling across our table by other servers too. Just pure unprofessionalism."

  • "Lovely hostess to greet our party of 5. Our servette was very knowledgeable re: the menu and wine it's. The portions are super gigantic; an entree easily feeds 5 or 6. The Carmine's salad is filled with all, sorts of goodies and properly dressed. The calamari starter was excellent; crisps but not greasy. The entrees, lasagne and chicken with herbs and vegetables were very yummy. Our wine selection of the house was adequate for the meal. I has enough leftovers for two meals for two people. No room for dessert. Street parking is available BUT READ THE SIGNS CAREFULLY SINCE MANY CONTRADICT ONE ANOTHER. Choose the one that's the most appropriate, since $8 for 4 hours is better than a $25 ticket."

  • "The food was great! Negative aspects: the AC was blasting and we were freezing. Also, my fiance was given a glass with a lipstick stain on it. We brought it up to the manager's attention who was understanding and took took off our appetizer off the bill."

  • "I picked this place because the family style I was bringg 8 teenagers for lunch of which 3 were celebratng birthdays.I called the week prior to find out if they offered lunch on the weeknd & was adv yes lunch is served everyday 11 to 3. I called back the day before & changed my reservatns from 1:30 to 2:00 & asked the again if they offered lunch on sat & was told yes until 3 explained I could not find their lunch menu online& she adv that it is the same foods for dinner just diff serving size. I arrived at the restuarant I was told they only serve lunch M-F. The MGR apologized &offered a 10% discoun or free apptizr. that does not solve the problem of the expense of the paying dinner prices for 8 teenagers.I picked this place for lunch."
