We had not looked at the menu on line beforehand and were surprised at the menu but plunged in with the help of our server. We were a group of 16. The family style service was perfect for us. The food was excellent, fresh and well prepared. The staff arranged three tables so the whole troop ate together. Highly recommended for groups visiting DC. Do make reservations ahead of time. The meal was fantastic; the room fun, my reservation was ready upon arrival, the family style meal helped people I care about from work and my family to become fast friends very quickly. We have dined at Carmines New York and had the same great experience. (altho this waiter was a bit more subdued, he was responsive.)
My best friend who was visiting from California captured the night with these words: "Its my favorite place to eat good fun and have fun in D.C.". Our group ranged from 16-73 and we were all very happy. The service was a little slow at times as the place became filled but it was nice to have time to relax between courses. Our side dish of broccoli was enough for six people to share. It was fresh and cooked perfectly. We also got the Chicken Marsala, which was enough for four people. The dish was superb with a hint of sweet taste, perhaps due to the wine. I've never enjoyed this standard Italian dish so very much. Even the bread was super-sized, and it was also delicious. Wine selection is nice and you can certainly enjoy great Italian wines for reasonable prices. Wine glasses were unusual (well, actually, same as the one for ice water, not a deal breaker though). My family has always enjoyed the food and my two daughters especially enjoy the leftovers. We usually order more than we need, because we know they will be looking forward to having some for a meal the next day. Whenever we visit our daughters - one a student, the other working in DC, we ensure a family meal at Carmines is on the agenda. Our waitress was great! The only problem we had is the portion size. They truly have family serving sizes which is great if you are a family. Between my wife and I we could not finish the entire meal, and we shared one. Since we were staying in a Hotel we could not take the leftovers back with us.
