Diner Reviews
  • "This restaurant has consistently great food and service. Portions are very large, so come hungry! Veal dishes are perfectly prepared, pasta is always good. Recommend for anyone looking for wonderful Italian food in a historic setting. "

  • "Shrimp Franchese was recommended. Shrimp lightly breaded with a lemon garlic sauce. Shrimp was soggy and tough. Broccolini was unimaginative. Did not realize dish would not have pasta! Seating was overcrowded. Had to rub backside against table to exit banquette. Server was extremely helpful with exception of lack of information regarding entire dish."

  • "We had a delightful time on Saturday evening ~~ and our food was delicious. I don't remember our waiter's name but it was his first evening as a waiter at Carmine's. He did a fantasitc job. Moreover, hats off to the bartendar, Danny. His superb service and wonderful smile made our evening. Thank you again~~ Bryan and Mary Durkin"

  • "This is a gem. I always order Nona's Gravy. It is spectacular! This past visit, they changed the noodles, which I didn't like so much. If you can get Danny Levin, he is the best, most fun server I've ever encountered."

  • "Sat outside off Wells. While you can eat reasonable Italian food, its about the people watching on the patio. We had brunch/lunch. Reasonable quality, somewhat overpriced, but so was the parking. A once a year kind of place for a visitor, many other better Italian spots in Chicago. If you are a local, this must be a frequent spot."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our outdoor dining experience!!! The food was delicious and the staff was attentive. Definitely a place we will come back to again!"

  • "We went to eat here by accident a few years ago and we were excited to come back again when we made the trip from DC! This is classic Italian food with some additional dishes--- but in te most delicious way you've ever had it. Classicly delicious and the wait staff really knows their food and makes excellent recommendations based on your personal taste. The piano man adds a really wonderful touch and without intending twice now, we have had a romantic special evening dining here. A must visit!!"

  • "not sure how to put it other than if you have not have the ____ calabrese at carmine's (and you like spicy food), you should. As far as filling in the blank, take your pick, chicken, veal, calamari,.... The federalist Zin was quite nice too!"

  • "This used to be a favorite for me.I had reservations at 7:00 andI wanted to take my guest to the piano bar prior .When we arrived around 6:00 we were told that the bar was closed and that we could go next door to get a drink. We went next door to Tavern on Rush.Must better attention so we had dinner there.Carmines staff could have said We can sit you early have a great glass of wine and a great appetizer ."

  • "Carmine's, in my opinion is a restaurant that is riding on it's laurels, a "has been". The waiter was nice but not attentive. We had to ask a bus boy to "Please tell our waiter we would like a glass of wine." I had the past with sausage and broccoli which was greasy and heavy, I ate less than a quarter of it. I was told that the salad was mixed greens with tomatoes and olives, the tomatoes were awful and there were exactly two very small olives. I will never return and could never recommend this restaurant."

  • "Excellent food choices (I was particularly impressed with the Tomato & Onion Salad as a starter followed by the best Twin Breast of Chicken Parmesan I have ever seen!). Great family party of 7 enjoyed every moment. Thank You Carmine's and to your staff for a great Chicago visit!"

  • "A friend recommended this restaurant and we were not disappointed. Two adults and our three daughters (18,18,20) - all of which like to customize and order off-menu and the server was great suggesting that we do just that and helping with some of the selections. All of the dishes were great - mussels for appetizer, various noodles with Fra Diavolo, Sea Bass on Linguini, can't remember them all, but they were all really good."

  • "I'm from St. Louis and when I'm in Chicago Carmines is a must! It doesn't matter if I only stop in for a drink or to have dinner...I have never left disappointed."

  • "Unfortunately I mistakenly gave the wrong name when checking in for our dinner reservation, but rather than tell me they didn't have that name for a reservation (at which point, I would have given my maiden name-the correct name they did have), they went ahead and seated us at a hi-top in the bar by the musician. What was supposed to be a fun night of good food, wine and catching up with friends we hadn't seen for 10 years, turned into a nightmare because the music was so loud, even when we were screaming, we couldn't hear each other. The food was good and the wine was good, but our night was definitely ruined by the loud music. I'm certain had the reservation name been confirmed we would have had a more suitable table."

  • "This was not the same Carmine's I ate at in November. I was at a private party in November and the food was unbelievable. Our dinner a few days ago was not so good. The appetizer of mussels was very good and from there it went down hill. The salads were tasteless and the bread was raw and gummy. The sausage was tasty but very heavy and greasy. The chicken vesuvio was average, not special. The waiter was a bit off, an older man. I will not be going back."

  • "We canceled our Sunday night (23 MARCH) reservation by phone as Carmine's had a power outage and we could not cancel via opentable. Review based on past experiences."

  • "Ask for the Chef's personal choice that is NOT on the menu and then split it. The meal was absolutely delicious, but huge. We had them box up and give to homeless. Waiter was very experienced and personable."

  • "Carimines is one of the best Rosebud co., restaurants that provide outstanding service, entree selections, with amazing food taste. The servings are huge, so be ready to eat!"

  • "I have been here a few times, but for some reason this visit my dinner was exceptional. I had the breaded Chicken Parmesan. It was delicious. Great great food. However - You should look into stepping up your cocktail game. You have a GREAT bar, and seems like its not fully utilized. There were a lot of young people in the restaurant, and just seems like your cocktail menu was lacking. Strawberry basil Martini's, blueberry lemon drops, Pomergranate/cucumber martini - a twist on the cosmo would be cool. Just some great well thought out options would really make this place pop again and more "up to date" without changing its tradition. Even change them seasonally or have a Carmine's specialty cocktail, try Classic old school craft cocktails"

  • "There were four of us on a Saturday night - we were seated right away, pretty good for a Saturday night but then again, we had a reservation. The food was stellar but the drinks took an unusually long time to arrive. I would have given the service five stars but our waitress seemed like she was either having a bad day or didnt care for us right from the start. The other servers were great - our water stayed full and plates were promptly removed after each course."

  • "Carmines is always a fantastic experience. The favorite is always the Meatball salad appetizer which I’ll occasionally order as pickup. I’ve been to Carmine’s in groups of 2 or 20 for a family event and they always satisfy."

  • "I always seem to find myself wanting to go back to Carmine's when I think of classic Italian food. It is always a great experience. Fresh seafood, expansive wine list, rich red sauce, and top notch service. What more could you ask for?"

  • "Made reservations at Carmine's based on a referral from a friend that owns several restaurants in Michigan. Since he is in the restaurant and hospitality business, who better to obtain a referral for our recent trip to Chicago. I checked the menu online ahead of time and their Nana's Gravy dish caught my eye. Probably the best meal I've ever had. All four of us in our party were impressed with the food and the service. This will be our first stop when we make travel plans to Chicago again."

  • "I have been to Carmine's many times with either family or a group of friends. We have never been disappointed and have always enjoyed the food along with the service. From appetizers to main courses it doesn't disappoint. All of the staff we encounter are always friendly and eager to please."

  • "Carmine's was recommended to me by my sister. It was everything that she said it would be.... perfect Italian dining experience for a romantic evening. My boyfriend and I are not from Chicago and we were looking for a fun and romantic place to spend Valentine's Day.... It was a perfect night and I highly recommend it for the service and delicious food!"
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "Made reservations for valentines day, I was late due to heavy traffic. Carmines still seated me within 10 minutes, even though I was 25 minutes late and they were JAMMED PACKED! The service was excellent, loved our waitor, honestly i thought the food would be better. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but I expected more. I'd definitely go back."

  • "I went out with a group of 7 people the day after Valentine's Day. Boy was it crowded! The staff was very professional and tried to accommodate everyone by making us feel like we were the only table in the place. I would definitely go back, but probably with a smaller group to make it more intimate."
