The food was plentiful and very good. Cocktails were a little on the weak side, but service was good, the waitstaff knew the menu, and the atmosphere was perfect for a celebration. The menu is designed for group dining and salad plus two dinners and a desert was more than enough for five of us. We were surprised when the bill came - it was very reasonable! Now they are much harder to find the exception to this is that Carmine's has remained a great big noisy place with friendly and attentive service. The food ranges from great to mediocre many dishes are notably excellent i.e. anything marsala. The red sauce is fine, the eggplant parm isn't. Our friends were an hour late; not once did the waiter ever pressure us to order something while we waited or made us feel guilty about taking up a table. The wine steward was a bit pushy, but our waiter made up for it. Service was well timed. Moderate selection of wines; pricey but not outrageous.
Started with calamari. Proportion of squid to breading was just right, wasn’t too greasy, and the marinara dipping sauce was extremely flavorful. The table loved Carmine’s Salad. Portions are all family style, and they deliver on that promise.

The food is good - solid with no frills. The service is always excellent and they are always good with our kids so when it's a group of us it is perfect. Our table was ready when we arrived. The food was favorful, hot and delicious. The menu is varied with different foods available in beef, chicken, veal and seafood. The pasta choices are large. Since the food is served family-style, one dish is enough for two. Groups can really try a variety of foods, but be careful not to over-order! I have recommended Carmines for years to many folks when they come to New York. Service very good and food served hot and in a timely fashion. Portions are served family style and you are able to feed between 2 to 3 people with most plates. I was an upper west side resident for 18 years and Carmines was a regular family dinner spot. Reservations are made but usually not taken in to table at that time. Usually a 10-15 minute wait on reservations. The number one rule of this eatery is that you absolutely must come with a group. None of the portions are sized for individuals, and people who don't eat too much will often find that one entree is good for 3-4 people.
That being said, if you do come with a group of people, the food and atmosphere is excellent. The food tastes delicious and the time between ordering and receiving food is adequate.
