A word from Carmine's - 91st Street
Carmine's simple and very popular concept is to serve every meal in the style of an Italian American wedding feast - which means large portions of home-style antipasti, pastas, seafood and meat entrees served on large platters designed for sharing. And when we say large, we mean large. An entree here could easily feed three to four average eaters. Located in a sprawling, former grand ballroom on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, this is the original Carmines. Designed by Peter Niemitz, the interiors evoke the images of the quintessential New York restaurant. With elements and details from the 1920s to the 1940s, the restaurant has the look and feel of a place that has been around for much longer than it's 1990 opening. If you are in the market for freshly prepared family style Italian food that is served in huge portions at reasonable prices, this is the place for you.Continued

  • "We went to celebrate my cousin's birthday because it's his favourite. Food was artesone as always. However the staff was rolling their eyes when We asked for more drinks, We had to take plates And silverware from table next to us because nobody Came to serve it although We had asked for it several times...i think there should be a more efficient service for the greatest Food they serve."

  • "The food was just okay and service was very spotty. It took our waiter an extremely long time for him to take our drink order and to bring it back. We gave our food order to only realize there wasn't any silverware. Ordered the salad with dressing on the side - I said it and my sister said it. It came with dressing and when we mentioned to the waiter that we asked for the dressing on the side. He made a face like we were lying. I'm just not impressed and won't be going back."

  • "This was the first time we visited the 91st street location. Food is consistently great and staff friendly and personable. Definitely will be back!"

  • "Not at the level it has been in the past regarding food and service. Meatballs were cold and had to be sent back. Pasta special was requested diablo and served not in the least hot. Waiter claims he thought the request was regarding the temperature not the seasoning! Have been going to restaurant for over 20 years and this is the first time we as a group were disappointed. "

  • "Have met our cousins there a few times before and the six of us have always enjoyed the food. My favorite: linguini with white clams sauce, although this time we had it with penne pasta."

  • "The food is robust Italian served family style in a bustling, festive atmosphere. There are always leftovers to take home.Carmine's is always fun."

  • "Went to Carmines for dinner with an out-of-town friend. She chose the place, which is clearly a tourist trap. The food was lousy, the noise was terrible and I can't imagine why anyone would want to dine there when there are so many excellent restaurants in NYC. Avoid this place."

  • "I went to Carmine's to celebrate my wedding, as i want a place where i can feel like home, and tjis was the perfect spot. The food was awesome!!! The portions?? HUGE!! Thanks God we asked before everyone order a plate for itself because we were a party of 10 and with 4 dishes we ate and also we had to take food home."

  • "Carmine's is best for large groups (at least 4 people or more) as the entire menu is focused on family style, large servings to share. If I went back again as a party of two, I think I would eat at the bar downstairs where they offer a menu more appropriate for two people. Reservations are a must!"

  • "Carmine's is my brother and sister-in-law's favorite NYC restaurant, so we knew we wanted to try it on our visit. We were not disappointed! It was a fabulous meal withinwalking distance of the museum of natural history."

  • "We went to the upper west side location with family (3 kids). Since it was family style, we had to work with the kids to accommodate their tastes. We ordered the Caesar salad and chicken parm. Salad was okay, chicken parm was good. It seemed a little over hyped, but we probably didn't order the best dishes to really make a good determination. We try to avoid crowded "tourist" spots, but this was recommended by an acquaintance who used to live in NYC and one who currently lives in NYC."

  • "It was FANTASTIC! Best veal parm I've had in a long time. Recommend going for lunch. Getting a table was instant and it was quiet and peaceful. Great for conversation."
    Dined on 3/24/2014
  • "The food was good but the noise level was so high it was hard to have a conversation at the table."
    Dined on 3/23/2014
  • "Carmine's 91st Street, like its counterpart in Times Square, is a huge, noisy Italian restaurant known for its great Italian food and huge portions. Each family-style dish can feed 3-4 people and it's almost always great! They have a gluten-free menu for guests with Celiac or gluten allergies, which is much appreciated. We got the sausage and red sauce on gluten free pasta and it was great - my non-Celiac dining companions said they couldn't even tell the difference between that and "regular" pasta. The ambience is a little "energetic", though - you have to scream across the table to make yourself heard as the dining room is one big open space with lots of groups."

  • "I loved eating in the Carmine's on the Upper West Side, as it's not as busy and had a lot of availability and flexibility for lunch on a Saturday. Food was delicious and I couldn't wait to get home and dive in to the leftovers!"

  • "We celebrated our kid's b'day with some friends at Carmine's. The atmosphere was great, the staff very helpfull and the food just great for the occasion (several young kids)."

  • "Carmines was a recommended must for our recent trip, and although the food was good, the experience was not. Our service was probably the worst I've ever experienced anywhere. We waited for menus, drinks, and were never checked on. When any staff did approach us, there was no hospitality attached to the encounter. They just ran off. It is also so noisy, that it was difficult to have a conversation. The family-style portions are wonderful for large parties, and the food is decent, but the rest of the experience ruined the evening."

  • "The food wash very good. The service was just okay. I'm not sure if we were supposed to get bread right away ,but we. didn't iGet it for quite awhile. I had to ask twice for it during the change of shifts, but we eventually received it at our table half way through the meal. The food and recommended food choices were excellent. We just wished we didn't wait so long for the bread. It wasn't even busy during this time."

  • "Huge portions of delicious food at very reasonable prices. Nothing haute or nouvelle here, just the good old Italian standards that we all love: eggplant parm, veal saltimbocca, wonderful insalate! Enjoy!"
    Dined on 3/19/2014
  • "The noise level is through the roof. There were 4 of us and we couldn't hear each other talk, and we finally gave up. The food was ok, way too much of it, and I guess its the value that keeps the people coming back. I wouldn't return. Host was rude (with a reservation) and kept yelling at people to wait downstairs."
    Dined on 3/16/2014
  • "This place is ideal for 4 or more people since it is family style and the portions are big. I only wish their salads came in a wee bit smaller size for those parties under 3 people. The leftovers aren't as good the second day for a salad."

  • "Carmines on the Upper West Side is a restaurant that serves up great italian food homestyle. The service is excellent and the staff all very polite and professional. I like this restaurant because of it's family style platters - it feels more cozy and down to earth and very less stressful somehow - a nice place to relax during lunch with the family. I prefer lunch over dinner because dinner in always packed and a bit too busy for me - although even at dinner the service is always good -"

  • "Whenever we are in New York we visit Carmines on 91st Street. The food is always fantastic & the customer service is exceptional. Out of all the choices of places to eat in New York, Carmines is our #1 choice."

  • "Recommended by a colleague from the Bronx, met/exceeded all expectations Calamari a must! Service great, to wit: my 15 year old daughter accidently spills my full glass of chianti on the white tablecloth Within 10 seconds the floor manager, our waiter, 2 other waiters descend from nowhere & clean the wine spill, new tablecloth, new plates silverware , & a new full glass of chianti. You can't pay people enough to provide that kind of service!"

  • "Dined at the midtown location which was good. Had heard the UWS location was better though. It is. The food was definitely better prepared - even the bread basket was better. Server was great. Had a party of four and the server asked if we'd been there before and explained the family style concept for the one of my party who had not. Suggested drinks, guided us in ordering so we had the perfect amount. The drinks at both locations were delish - this location was just as delish but stronger - they don't skimp on the alcohol so the drinks are worth the price. Servers brought out food and served us at table, the manager brought out our remaining dish which had taken a few minutes longer - nicely done on both accounts. Great time had by all."

  • "Great place for the family style experience. We went as a group of four and there was more than enough food; we even took some home. Wait staff was very knowledgeable of the menu only con was the menu is posted on the wall and my mom doesn't see very well so ordering for her was a bit challenging but overall a great experience for the whole family"

  • "Kids loved it. Good house wine. Service was good. Food was not served hot, just slightly warmed up. The first few bites were ok, but then by the time I was halfway done the food was simply cold (especially mid-meatball). Great for leftovers the next day heated up in microwave. Next time I go (and I will go back) I'll ask in advance that the food be served hot so I don't have to send it back and hope nothing "happened" to it. I don't think Carmine's would do that, but it's one of my fears and I never do it. Ever."
