A word from Carmine's - 91st Street - NYC
Carmine's simple and very popular concept is to serve every meal in the style of an Italian American wedding feast - which means large portions of home-style antipasti, pastas, seafood and meat entrees served on large platters designed for sharing. And when we say large, we mean large. An entree here could easily feed three to four average eaters. Located in a sprawling, former grand ballroom on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, this is the original Carmines. Designed by Peter Niemitz, the interiors evoke the images of the quintessential New York restaurant. With elements and details from the 1920s to the 1940s, the restaurant has the look and feel of a place that has been around for much longer than it's 1990 opening. If you are in the market for freshly prepared family style Italian food that is served in huge portions at reasonable prices, this is the place for you.Continued

  • "We were pleasantly surprised to hear that they will be remodeling the restrooms since this is the only downside of otherwise wonderful place."

  • "Original west side location still serving up family sized platters of traditional Italian dishes after >20 years. Great for groups with big appetites!"

  • "4th of July weekend so Carmine's wasn't as busy as it usually is so we were able to sit at the bar & have a couple of drinks before being seated. Would recommend the Bloody Mary or house Chianti. After consulting the very extensive menu, the four of us decided on the fried calamari for the appetizer and our entrees were Shrimp Scampi & Penne Bolognese. Everyone at the table enjoyed everything that was ordered as evidenced by the empty platters at the end of the meal. We were all too full for dessert--maybe next time. We will definitely be back."

  • "Carmine's was a wonderful date night that we had needed for a while. Our jobs are super demanding and this night being the only one we'd had off in a few weeks, we're glad we spend it at Carmine's. We each ordered a dish and they were HUGE! We still have leftovers in our fridge and still loving the tastes! Carmine's was a beautiful atmosphere, lots of families, and tons of fun!"

  • "I wouldn't say there was anything wrong with Carmine's per se. It's just that they set a high bar for themselves, using terms like "legendary." Of course, they don't specify the details of that legend! The food was good, but not great. The prices are high, which they seem to justify on the basis of "huge" portions that they claim can feed 2-4 people. In reality, the portions are not much larger, and perhaps not at all larger, than in other Italian restaurants. Neither the chicken parmigiana nor the chicken marsala impressed us as being particularly large. I would say that a main course can feed no more than 1.5 people. If you want leftovers, order one entrée per person."

  • "Carmine's was the perfect place to have after graduation lunch for my daughter. Our visiting family members can't stop talking about how wonderful the food and service was. Family sized portions are huge making pricing very reasonable. The food was worth every dime. Thank you Carmine's for such a wonderful experience!!!!"

  • "Carmine's on the UWS is simply the best Italian eatery in the city...it's especially true for groups since they serve family style...go with 6 or more so you can try multiple entrees...and don't forget to ask for an order of garlic bread WITH mozzarella - it's worth the trip alone...(though on this night the kitchen forgot our order so we opted for dessert instead!)..."

  • "Stopped here on recent trip to NYC. Great food and I loved the concept of the family style meal although for a group of 3 it was too much food for us to eat making it quite pricey overall. Would recommend for a special occasion, even better if you have a larger group so you can try more of their dishes."

  • "At Carmine's, everything is served family style, so you share with your table mates. The food and wine is delicious, and there are no unsatisfied customers. If you want a small plate of something for yourself, STOP IT! You are just being selfish. You will eat what everyone else eats and like it. And, you will like it."

  • "The only bad thing is when we had the rest of our wings and calamari wrapped up to go after dining there....they did not include our wing dipping sauce and marinara sauce for the calamari. I was told that I would have to pay an additional $5 for each sauce. Why didn't they include our remaining sauces that came with our dinner?"

  • "Very good Italian restaurant. Food is amazing! Big portions. One order is for 2-3 people. Took girlfriend for anniversary, couldn't talk to her without raising my voice a lot. It was loud with the guests. Also, very small non wheelchair accessible restrooms."

  • "We arrived a little early for our 1:30 PM reservation and they asked us to wait. As other guests arrived they were able to seat them but not our group of six. When asked why the other groups were being seated we were told that they were larger parties. There were empty tables available and when we asked about being seated on those tables we were told that they were being held for people with 2:00 reservations. We finally left and went to another restaurant to eat. Their food is not worth this type of treatment."

  • "Late day trip to the city with my sister in-laws for a fundraiser and decided to have an early dinner at Carmines. Made the reservation for 4 pm, but arrived a little late....no problem. Great time to be there as it was too early for the evening dinner crowd, but they started rolling in by 5:oo. Love the food here! Can't miss with the signature chicken with rosemary and lemon, the green salad, the marsala, the Proseco and my fav, the penne bolognese. Basic lasagna is great as well. All three of us had our mouths watering on the ride from CT just talking about what we were going to order...and we weren't the least bit disappointed! Their food is always very consistent which is a huge plus when you have that craving. A+ for this NY staple!!:)"

  • "Celebrated a high school graduation-it was so much fun. Eating family style was casual and delicious. The food just kept coming. Had the titanic dessert well worth it. It was showy and a grand finish to a great family gathering"

  • "We arrived earlier than our reservation time. We checked in and were seated immediately. We ordered after getting a menu. As we knew it was going to happen, the food servings were big (supposed to feed up to 4 people). The salad and all the courses following that were great. Of course, we took home food and are still eating it! This is especially a great place to take a group of people."

  • "**i have gone to carmines a few times...several years ago the food was great..now its not good...our garlic bread was burnt the ends were black..the chicken marsala was okay but the eggplant that looked like a meat loaf was disappointing....i always loved to go to carmines years ago but now the food is terrible....i dont know what happened with the food however it was not what i expected for sure...."

  • "We were 30 minutes early for our reservation, but were seated immediately. Our waiter was prompt and knowledgeable, especially in what would work best from the menu for a party of 3 (smaller party for a family style restaurant). When the waiter was serving us our meal, he spilled my plate on the floor, which he immediately apologized for (repeatedly), he quickly found a manager, and had a small plate of extra food sent to the table to make up for what was on the floor. We went in anticipating spending $200+, but left paying just over $100. Overall a great way to spend our day in the city for my birthday. Cant wait to go back!"

  • "Ate here with 2 friends. Mixed green salad terrible, not off to a good start. Had spaghetti with meatballs, which was average at best, and eggplant Parm which was decent. Portions are tremendous even for family style dining so at least you get your money's worth. Service was pretty good, ambience was good, but overall the food was not. I will not return. Of all the delicious food in NYC, don't waste your time here!"

  • "I have been to Carmine's numerous times and it never disappoints. We were seated immediately upon checking in and were greeted by our server. We were informed of the daily specials, but ordered our standard fare. Salad, garlic toast with melted cheese, chicken parm and rigatoni with garlic and oil were all perfectly cooked and delicious to say the least. It was the right amount of food for 4 of us and gave us the incentive to walk tie 20 or so blocks back home."

  • "Everyone at Carmine's was friendly and very helpful! The food was great! The noise level was quite high is the only negative thing I would point out."

  • "This was my first time in the city and I heard that Carmines was somewhere that I needed to dine. It was an amazing experience! Our server was friendly and helpful. He gave us some suggestions on what to order and we were NOT disappointed! Thank you for helping to make my first time in New York a great experience!"

  • "Was confuse when we had 9 people out of 13 but still had to wait to be seated... Then they claim my reservation was for 1pm when I had a email confirmation for 1;30PM. After all that foods & serving was unbelievable and worth the hassle. The waitress was fantastic, friendly and joy to have"

  • "Service was excellent. We had a 6PM reservation on a very busy evening and was seated on time. The staff was very attentive, the food was simply prepared yet tasted very good. There were lots of leftovers to take home . Overall, everyone loved it."
