We thought the food was excellent and perfectly presented with not too much in quantity. The service was fine and the waiter was helpful with the menu. The ambience is good and it was nice to meet Carmen who came around to all the tables. We would definitely recommend to others and we will come back for that special occasion.

Always a relaxed, sophisticated evening. Great bar, slow pace. Nice to go with friends for a relaxed evening - and you can actually hear each other!! I have a hearing impairment and appreciate a quiet environment without blaring music.

We were guests at The Danforth Inn, home of Carmen. The inn was lovely and the dining experience was superior. We had cocktails in its lovely living room and then entered the small dining room with fireplace and just a few tables. We could hear each other talk and much of the talk was devoted to the excellent and well-presented cuisine. We started with bacalao fritters for the table. They w ere light as a feather, salty and completely addictive. I then had chicken liver mousse presented with home made breadsticks and pickled veggies. Also delicious. For my entree I had a duck confit presented imaginatively as a sliced leg with crusty edge and then the confit itself in a cylinder standing shape. Flan was also excellent.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2005

I'd recommend it only for couples looking for a romantic, quiet, elegant evening. The vibe is upper-crusty new England charm; the Latin influence on the menu does not transfer to the ambiance. The menu choices were interesting, rich and sauced, the bread was good but not made there (from Standard in Portland), the service is fastidious but not particularly warm (except for the bread service!), and the bunuelos for dessert were light and delicious. We made the mistake of bringing our kids, having seen nothing in the listing to decide differently. It's not a kid-friendly place, at all. We asked the waiter to recommend something the chef could do for children and had no support.

Very good overall, we really enjoyed it. Only weakness ... for the caliber and price of the restaurant, the waiter was absent through most of our meal. We waited a long time before placing and recieving our drinks and he had no real suggestions/comment on the menu. Kind of a bummer as we all really enjoy a great meal and engaging with knowledgable staff can add to the experience. Perhaps they were short their best help due to the holidays? That being said, the food was excellent and we'll return. Carmen briefly stopping by our table was a nice touch as well -

The menu changes frequently to reflect local products. I like the fact Carmen keeps the menu fresh and exciting. We usually work our way from top to bottom so we dont miss out on anything. We usually spend around $180 for 2 including a nice bottle of wine plus tip. We never leave hungry and always leave satisfied. Carmen adds a very personal touch in so many ways including a visit to each table to talk with her guests. If you havent been to Carmens yet I suggest you add it to your list.

You can see clearly from my star rating that my wife and I could not have been happier with our experience dinning at Carmen at the Danforth. From the warm and welcoming atmosphere to the excellent and well educated wait staff to meeting Carmen, the outstanding owner and Chef! There really is nothing that I would have wanted to see done differently. We were also guests at the Danforth that evening, which made for an even more delightful experience. Try it, you will not be disappointed either.

The food was fresh, servings were perfectly sized, and the dishes were cooked to perfection. My only complaint is that the taste of salt overpowered all four dishes I tried. It would be nice if the cooks eased up on the salt and let the fresh favors of the ingredients speak for themselves.

The food was generally very good. My main issue was with the service which was far too solicitous. We had 3 waiters offer to pour us water within the firat two minutes of being seated. Our waiter checked if we liked the food before we had had a chance to take a bite. A side was not delivered with the meal but a good 10 minutes after we received our entrees and our desert order was very delayed....it had never been entered into the system. Pour service can detract from the quality of the meal.

The food was good, not great. The portions were ok. But the prices were too high for what you got. If the dishes were 20% less, I might go back. My partner thought the portions were much too small. He was starving when he left. Also, there isn't much variety in the menu. Nightly specials would make things more exciting.

This is some of the best food and service we have had in Maine. Their wine list was terrific and the wait staff was very knowledgable. The dining rooms are well laid out and very lovely. It is not easy to find, is not well signed or well lit on the outside but those things can be overlooked once you taste the food! Definitely try this one!

This is a a unique restaurant in that it is part of a Bed & Breakfast. It feels very intimate and the furnishings are comfortable and pretty. The food with a Puerto Rican flavor is unique. While it is a fairly meat intensive menu, there are some fish items for those who lean in that direction. We enjoyed the plaintain appetizer although it probably wasn't enough for three. I also wished it had a dipping sauce. The first couse octopus salad was delicious and the duck and scallop dishes were plate licking. I thought the red snapper was a little bland. For dessert we had a rich chocolate mousse with fried nuts and grilled pineapple which was good. The owner/chef came to each table and spent quite a bit of time chatting.

Portland is becoming a city known for its diverse mix restaurant and bar options and now with the addition of Carmen's, the fine dining scene has increased by more than a few notches. The food is an incredible Latin-Maine fusion of complex flavors without being heavy-handed on salt and butter as found in lesser establishments. Menu options are grouped into “for the table” (5 or 6 small bites), first plates (appetizer/soup/salad) second plates (entrees) and sides; portion sizes are somewhat small (so you can experience more) and reasonably priced, but the flavors are the highlight. For the table, we had “Luces Meats Pulled Pork” (rum barbecued sauce, green mango slaw on crispy green plantains) and “Artisan Manchego” (house chorizo croquet

It is part of an Inn (The Danforth) that is a converted mansion from the 19th century in a very nice neighborhood where the parking is much easier than in many parts of Portland. The decor is beautiful, the service was attentive without being overbearing, and the food was great! We will be back and would certainly recommend this restaurant to others!
