Intimate Italian dining in the North End. Large open front overlooking all the action on Hanover St, the main street in the North End. Marble tables, brick walls, large Black and White photos of the family in Sicily. This is truly like taking a trip to an Italian restaurant in a little Italian village. The menu offers a combination of the styles of the Chef / Owner's family, and modern inspiration and applications.   • "It is really a shame that the service here is so poor. The food I will say is fantastic and is one of the best I have had in the North End. Sadly, we will not be returning as some of the staff really do not deliver a great dining experience. Our meal was very rushed and the waitress kept coming back to the table to see if we had paid our check. We arrived around 8 and I felt like they wanted us paid and done by 9. The restaurant is really small and I get it is important to turn over the tables quickly but our table was one of the last seatings for the night so it was not necessary to rush us out. I am really disappointed in you Carmelina's!"

  • "We love dining in the North End, but it can be frustrating. It's such a restaurant mecca that you often feel taken for granted by the restaurant staff. Our large group of 11 friends and colleagues ended up at Carmelina's because another North End restaurant that we had loved for an annual gathering gave us a very difficult time about our reservation. Carmelina's couldn't have been MORE accommodating. The food was great, and the service was equally great. Our server even accommodated our tricky bill splitting needs."

  • "I've been to Carmelina's a few times and this past time met my expectations. The food was very well done. The calamari and meatballs were both executed well. The meatballs were especially memorable. I had the rollati with prosciutto and fontina. It was in a lovely vodka-esque sauce which I devoured. The flavors were delicious, though I wasn't a fan of the crispiness at the top of the pasta. Since the entire dish was baked, I'm not sure if the pasta should have been covered in sauce to soften it, or if it was intentionally crispy. Either way, I would've preferred soft pasta. My boyfriend had the Sunday macaroni (which he always gets). They were out of short ribs which was sad, but they added extra sausage and meatballs which were both great."

  • "First, the food was wonderful--they can make anything to order and are accommodating of dietary restrictions. However, my first and only experience here has dissuaded me from ever returning again. I went with two other people to celebrate a friend's birthday. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. The meals were expensive and we ordered wine--so we had a considerable check. But we were rushed out after only being at the restaurant for 45 minutes. Both the waiter and hostess paced back and forth behind our table and mumbled "I really need to turnover these tables". I understand it's a small establishment and frequently turning over the tables is necessary, but there is a right way and a wrong way to encourage people to leave."

  • "A Thursday night - 6 PM: Our waiter was a very nice guy but didn't seem to be really on the ball. My friend & I ordered a bottle of Malbec. The ladies ordered a different glass of wine each. First the waiter brought a bottle of Merlot. He was sent back for the right wine. Then he started to open the bottle and serve us when I said ' What ever happened to ladies first'? He said "We can play it that way" and went for their drinks. Our meals came...excellent food. Then a cook slipped in with the artichokes on a plate that were left off my wife's dinner. A knowledgeable waiter should have caught that. One good suggestion he had was when my friend & I each ordered a side of pasta he said to get one and split it. It was large. Good meal!"

  • "This restaurant was terrific. The food is some of the best I have had in the North End and it is at a great location right in the middle of Hannover across the street from Mike's. The portions are massive and the prices are dirt cheap. The wine list has good options as well at very good prices from $25-50 per bottle for most of the list which is very low for the neighborhood. It is not a quiet romantic spot though, it has more of a bar feel to the place, but not so loud you can't hear. Highly recommend it!"

  • "Tiny spot, pretty good food and friendly service but unless I'm searching for a quick bite I probably won't be back. The staff was nice, but we felt rushed at every turn. We were enjoying drinks and chatting but the waiter came over every 3 minutes for our order. He was polite and we assumed it was because we had a 6:30 reservation and he needed to turn the table. Small restaurant, understandable. We were half way through our appetizers when the meal arrived. The bottle of wine we ordered barely stretched through dinner. When we left at 8:30 we were the last ones in the place. Thursday night? We headed down the street and enjoyed some wine at another restaurant. Good food but we don't go to dinner to race through it."

  • "Saw this restaurant on Phantom gourmet and was pleasantly surprised. A small restaurant which was soon full! I consider myself an expert on " good Italian food" and this was fantastic ! Would definitely recommend this restaurant. The little necks were my favorite cooked in a spicey red sauce and plenty of bread for dipping! Can't wait to go back with friends as I am sure they would love it too!"

  • "We were very impressed that the chef was able to spontaneously prepare a sautéed wild mushroom appetizer for us when we asked (not on the menu). This dish was superb, as was the baby eggplant. Our entrees included the famous stuffed pork chop, frutte de mare, and a pasta dish. All were delicious, perfectly prepared, and served piping hot. Our only complaint was that the main courses were served much too quickly after the appetizers and 2 of us had to wait about 5 minutes after the others were served. Regarding service, our waiter was not a refined, elegant server. He seemed more like a longshoreman who was recruited to wait on tables at the last minute. A more professional wait staff would be appreciated."

  • "I arrived 15 minutes before my reservation and the host immediately demanded how much longer it would be before my friends arrived and said he was not sure if they could accomodate me. Once we we seated, we waited 10 minutes for a server, who never introduced herself. Entrees were brought out at different times & water glasses were never refilled. 1/2 through the meal, we got the distinct impression we were being rushed along. The food was savory & spicy, but there plenty of excellent resaurqnts in the north end with impreccable service, so we will not be back."

  • "My husband and I took our two children (5 and 8) here for dinner on a Saturday night. We arrived 15 minutes prior to our reservation and were seated immediately. Our waiter was friendly. personable, and attentive without hovering, as well as great with our kids. We ordered the fried calamari for appetizer, and it was hands-down the best fried calamari I've ever had. I ordered the gnocchi al forno, my husband ordered the crazy alfredo, my son (8 years old) ordered the rollati di pasta, and my daughter (5 years old) ordered the side dish of ziti with tomato sauce. The portions were generous, and the food itself was delicious. Even my daughter's simple side dish was layered with flavors. Highly recommended!"

  • "Do not waste your money here. We ordered wine and were confused with menu as it was not the same as posted outside. When we questioned our waitress she informed us that oh, we are serving our dinner menu for lunch today, but it has many items as the lunch menu, no apologies were made. And no, the menu was not the same and did not include what we were hoping to order. We asked for bread and were served Italian bread toast that you could break your teeth on! Our entrees arrived and were fair in taste. Unfortunately, all we could think of was why we didn't go to Artu Restaurant as planned. With stiff competition in this area, the attitude here was not at all welcoming and warm as you would expect. What was most disturbing was lack of honesty."

  • "We moved to the North End from CA last October and have tried many neighborhood spots. Carmelina's is in our top three (w/Carmen and Aria). We went during the week on a slow night and the restaurant was in complete sync anyway. Our daughter was visiting from San Francisco and she wanted spaghetti carbonara...she was not disappointed! Served traditional (Roman) style with a nice touch of pepper. I had the Crazy Alfredo pasta dish...excellent. The shrimp appetizer was also very good. Limited but interesting wine choices. Service was excellent. We'll definitely be back to try more items on a very nice menu."

  • "The restaurant was very accommodating with my reservation even though I arrived a bit late. The food was very good. However, we had to wait over 50 minutes for our entrees as there was a glitch with the order printing machine - we were only notified 30 minutes after it broke down and had to subsequently wait 20 more minutes. It would have been nice if the restaurant gave us a small plate of food while we waited as we were quite hungry."

  • "I went here with some out of town friends so they could experience a little bit of the North End. The location is great, right on Hanover street and across from Mike's Pastry. The menu had a nice variety with good pricing as well. Everyone seemed satisfied with their meals and the bottle of wine we orders was very enjoyable. Overall a good experience. Also I ordered the pasta which was definitely enough for me to eat in two meals so I felt I got my money's worth!"

  • "The food was very good. But they added a tip to my credit card bill I did not authorize. I was in a party of six, so the gratuity was included in the bill. But when I checked my credit card statement, they had added an additional 17.5% tip on on top of the 18% gratuity that was already in the bill. I had not authorized that additional tip and it was completely fraudulent for them to have added it."

  • "I've been to many restaurants in the north end and I can say I've liked them all but Carmelina's is by far the best of them all. This restaurant is a breath of fresh air. You forgot what authentic Italian food is really like until you eat here. This food is exactly like the food my Italian grandmother would serve. There is great detail put into the preparation of each dish. The calamari salad was delicious and a good size for the appetizer price. The tuna salad was delicious. Everything was marinated and dressed perfectly. My husband ate his chicken parm in 5 minutes flat. Nothing but good things to say about this place. The decor is updated, clean and attractive. You must go!"

  • "As many others have mentioned, this place is small. You definitely need a reservation. However, they are very good about seating you right away if you have a reservation. I came with a group of 4 on New Year's eve, had an 8:15 reservation, got to the restaurant early, and we were seated at 8:00. The waiter was attentive and speedy, and the food was incredible. I highly recommend the 4 mushroom pasta dish. My boyfriend also got a (huge) steak that was very nicely done. They definitely take the time and crew to prepare every meal. The prices were very reasonable for Boston, especially with the portions. There is no dessert menu, but Mike's Pastry is right across the street :)"

  • "A great restaurant for a date or a nice dinner for two. Not a place I would bring children to. There was a large menu to fit any cravings that you may have for the evening. Everything that we had was amazing! From the starter (shrimp in a pan.. delicious with plenty of fresh garlic) to the drinks (the house sangria and bellini's), not one dish was even slightly disappointing. I had the crazy Alfredo as a main course. It was unlike any alfredo I've ever had before. Truly an original dish! It was a large hearty serving and simply the smell made you salivate. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "I took my sales team there on the night of a snow storm. I think there were only two other people there besides us and it was so enjoyable. Great food, service and value. I have eaten there three times now and each time has been very very good. The appetizer Bracato is worth the trip alone....you could order that as your meal."
