A word from Carmelina's North End
Intimate Italian dining in the North End. Large open front overlooking all the action on Hanover St, the main street in the North End. Marble tables, brick walls, large Black and White photos of the family in Sicily. This is truly like taking a trip to an Italian restaurant in a little Italian village. The menu offers a combination of the styles of the Chef / Owner's family, and modern inspiration and applications. We are always striving to keep our food fresh, flavorful and true to our culinary traditions. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Like most restaurants in the North End - you should DEFINITELY get a reservation. The place is small but set up nicely. On nice days/nights they will open up the front and a great breeze comes through. We both enjoyed our meals but felt as though one of our pasta dishes was a bit more el dente than we like. The flavors were AWESOME, though. I would certainly go back and recommend it to anyone."

  • "Was a long wait, even with reservations on a Sat night, but the hostess, Felicia, was awesome because I'd used Open Table to book. Food was pretty good (but i'm a picky foodie). Asked waitor to recommend from three choices and the one he eliminated (Rollati di Pasta) I ordered again later and it was the best of the three by far! The Pollo Cardinale was excellent! Beware that the menu on Open Table is completely not accurate. We went there to try the small plate options so we could try several things, but they didn't have it that way anymore. While the waiters were great looking Italians, their efficiency and professionalism was somewhat lacking. Great open window view of Hanover street!! Overall a really good meal and evening."

  • "This was my second trip to Carmelina's. It was just as wonderful as the previous trip 18 months ago. The food is excellent!"

  • "This was my third visit - food was amazing but service this time was off as compared to the other times. Perhaps not enough people on duty. Our server was also moving tables from the alley to set yup for large parties. This was a distraction to his service to us. Would go again though!"

  • "Food was fine but not anything special as many of the reviews state. Definitely not bad and you get a lot for your money, and ambiance is nice and relaxing; but I rather spend my money at Quattro, Daily catch or fiore (all on Hanover)."

  • "We went here a few nights ago based on reviews that we read. We were not disappointed. The place is really small, but nicely decorated. There was a wait for walk in. We had made reservations on open table and got right in. Sat at the bar overlooking the kitchen which turned out to be the best seats in the house. We could easily watch the chefs make everything and even chat with them a little. They were super friendly and very appreciative to hear how much we loved the food. The service here leaves a little to be desired in terms of personality, but the food came out quickly and was so fantastic, I didn't really care. No outside seating, but huge open store front. Order the rollati and lobster ravioli (special). Both are amazing!"

  • "My husband and I had dined here once before and returned this week for dinner. The hostess was exceptional, and our server was also fabulous. it is a friendly, small restaurant with great food and a can't-beat-it location. I am returning next week with a group of my college friends and I know they will enjoy the experience. The only small downside is that the music level was to high, which (I believe) caused the conversation level to rise, and with the hard surfaces and small space, this made for a slightly too-loud atmosphere -- easily overcome by the quality of the food and the service. I can highly recommend Carmelina's!!!"

  • "The actual menu did not have items shown on the online menu . Friendly staff but seemed to be an assembly line approach: get em in, get em out....."

  • "After researching reviews of the North End restaurants we decided on Carmelina's for our first dinner in Boston. It was a very busy Sunday night so I highly recommend open table for a reservation as we did. From the service to the atmosphere to the food, we couldn't have more pleased. We eat at a lot of great restaurants in Chicago and I would easily say that Carmelina's is as delicious as the best of them. Would definitely come back."

  • "Carmelina's is located on Hanover St. in the North End of Boston. It is a quaint Italian restaurant with a modern vibe. The food here was delicious. We had the Crazy Alfredo and the Carbonara pastas. Both were flavorful, the pastas were al dente and they were reasonably priced. We had a table near the window which overlooked the street where you can people watch for some added entertainment. The only issue I had is the music playing which was loud and did not fit the Italian restaurant theme. All in all, it is worth it to go there for dinner if you are looking for some Italian cuisine. It also doesn't hurt that it is across from Mike's Pastry."

  • "Where should I start from the hostess who was so professional and sweet gave us a great table. Our server who did a good job recommending wine and beer for me and my husband. Then comes the most delicious Italian food you can. Felt like I was home with my mother on a Sunday night. Fresh flavorful and great portions. If you are in Boston and in the mood for Italian I Would definitely recommend stopping here. Make a reservation the place is small and very busy. But worth it if you have to wait."

  • "Had a 6:45 reservation for 4 people on Saturday night. They sat us a at an awesome table open to the street- prime for people watching. Service was brusque but on par, they gave great recommendations and took our order quickly. Food had perfect timing between salad and main course. Every dish was out of this world delicious!!! Possibly and truly the best Italian on Hanover st. We had house salads, the nightly special "dirty" Caesar salad for the first course. For the second course we had the tuna app, Chilean seabass al forno and Sunday Maccaroni. Would not have changed 1 part of the meal- outstanding and we will be back!!"

  • "We enjoyed dinner and were fortunate to be seated by the open windows so we could watch the Hanover Street action. We had a couple of small plates - the eggplant, the meatballs and the beets - all very good. We also had salmon, good and it came with a wonderful corn risotto, and a pasta dish. It was a bit noisy, but the place was full and the street noise added to the festive atmosphere."

  • "We were trying to find a spot that would be quintessential north end dining, but also OK to bring our kids along. Carmelina's was perfect for both....loud enough to drown out the kids, friendly, efficient service and delicious Italian food. The Carbonara was some of the best we have ever had. We found a good, but decent priced Italian wine for $35 off the affordable wine list. The meatballs were moist and delicious. The kids loved the spaghetti. Highly recommend!"

  • "We love this little restaurant, Fun environment with the windows open "people watching" and "vehicle watching" all the activity on Hanover street. I had the Beet salad......with arugula, YUM My husband had the chicken with artichokes, the flavor of the chicken was beautiful and the arugula salad with shaved parm brought back wonderful memories of our travels through Italy."

  • "I was a bit nervous when we first walked up and found out that we were sitting at a bar overlooking the cooks. Thought for sure it would be way to hot. I was quite comfortable and watching them work was quite fun. The food was very good but came way too fast!!! I had maybe taken two bites out of my app when the salads were served and same thing happened with the main course. I never got a chance to eat the salad. Besides that, the food was excellent! I had the Angry Alfredo but can't wait to go back and order the pork chop! Guys next to us got it and it just looked amazing!!!! Great Place."

  • "There were a lot of small things I had issues with at this restaurant, for example, the dirty menus and glasses, the stale complimentary bread that tasted like it was several days old, the fact that we were served our entrees while still eating appetizers and there was no room on the table for all the dishes, and the lack of good service. That being said, the food was quite decent. Every single dish we ordered was under-salted, but once we asked for extra salt, both the pasta and risotto we tried were quite tasty. Given that you're paying about $20 for a plate of spaghetti with garlic and tomato, though, it's not unreasonable to expect a properly salted dish. But clearly, for this restaurant, it is."

  • "Our third time and each time the food declined. An eggplant appetizer that once was a spectacular dish is now a dish to avoid. The Chilean sea bass special was drowning in oil. Sea bass is an oily fish but properly prepared as it was the first time we were there is excellent. This was a marsala version and it was accompanied by four vegetables, all overly sautéed in oil. I had to stop halfway through and most likely won't eat sea bass for a year, The pasta with gorgonzola cream had little gorgonzola flavor. The spicy shrimp appetizer was excellent. "

  • "Carmelina's is situated on Hanover St. and has floor-to-ceiling windows that open up wide to make you a part of the vibrant street life of the North End. The sea bass was excellent and the suggested wine spot-on for that dish. Calamari was a bit disappointed, which is surprising because everything else was so good. Quarters are a bit cramped, but that's part of the energy of the place. "

  • "We went to Carmelina's on Mother's Day and I will never return. Although it was a great spot, right in the middle of Hanover Street and had the large open windows to enjoy the warm day, our experience left a lot to be desired. When we arrived, our reservation was not for the right number in our party, even though I confirmed on my open table app that I booked it right. The hostess was rude. It was not suitable to bring my toddler. And although the food was decent, the service was AWFUL! Our server never checked back with us after dropping our meals, never asked if we wanted more drinks, was too busy sitting with the manager and doing his side work. I'm in the industry and there is no excuse for poor service! "

  • "The food here is awesome! Everything was cooked to perfection and delicious. The service on the other hand, was not good at all. We had a 7:00 reservation for 6 people. We arrived about 5 minutes early, and the hostess gave our table away to some random people off the street with no reservation! We had to wait for another table for 45 minutes before being seated! When the food was served, a member of our party was told there was a mix up in the kitchen and that her food would not be out for awhile. She had to sit there and watch everyone else eat, and was not offered anything in the mean time! The food is good, but because of the overall dinning experience, I would have a hard time recommending to a friend. "

  • "This is our second year in a row to dine at Carmelina's the night before the Boston Marathon. What an amazing restaurant. My only complaint is that there isn't another one in my hometown (and we have good restaurants!). If I lived in Boston, I would be eating here on a regular basis!! YUM!!!!"

  • "Found Carmelinas on Yelp and as suggested I ordered the Crazy Alfredo. It lived up to and surpassed my expectations. My date asked for a suggestion from the waiter and was pleased with his meal as well. We also had the Baby Eggplant appetizer and some amazing wine, all fantastic. The atmosphere is very up to date and borderline classy (we felt underdressed) but still very welcome by everyone. Did feel slightly rushed to leave, although on a busy Saturday night I suppose that can be expected. Make reservations ahead of time if you want to be seated at a table instead of the bar. "

  • "Known to me from Western MA - a nice addition to Hanover St. Given a perfect table inches from open window and Hanover St. - great service and delish salmon dish and spicy sauce ... try for lunch - separate menu, with some original dishes from restaurant. Nice wine selection ... "

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed a Friday night Marathon weekend meal. Small, intimate restaurant - and treated our 3 little kids like they were just as important as any "grown up" customer. The starter arugula salad was simple and very goodt. 2 of us ordered spaghetti alle vongole - and it was excellent. Plenty of chopped and whole clams with a great sauce. The meatballs were excellent - my son called them "epic"! The only dish that fell a bit short was the spicy shrimp. They were good sized with plenty of kick, but not enough flavor/taste depth behind the heat. After dinner, walked across the street and enjoyed cannolis from Mike's. Great meal - and next time we are in Boston we will be back."

  • "It was super warm here in Beantown the other night, so we ventured over to Carmelina's, hoping they would have all their front windows open, and they did! It is the perfect spot (right across the street from Mike's Pastry) for people watching in the North End. Food was fantastic - as always! They do not have a kids menu, but they'll put together whatever your little ones would like. (My little girl really enjoyed her spaghetti and meatball.) The service was very friendly, and we did not at all feel rushed, as others have mentioned. One thing to note, like many places in the North End, they do not have dessert or coffee. But hey, Mike's and Cafe Vitoria are only right across the street! Did I mention the food? Amazing!!"

  • "It is really a shame that the service here is so poor. The food I will say is fantastic and is one of the best I have had in the North End. Sadly, we will not be returning as some of the staff really do not deliver a great dining experience. Our meal was very rushed and the waitress kept coming back to the table to see if we had paid our check. We arrived around 8 and I felt like they wanted us paid and done by 9. The restaurant is really small and I get it is important to turn over the tables quickly but our table was one of the last seatings for the night so it was not necessary to rush us out. I am really disappointed in you Carmelina's!"

  • "We love dining in the North End, but it can be frustrating. It's such a restaurant mecca that you often feel taken for granted by the restaurant staff. Our large group of 11 friends and colleagues ended up at Carmelina's because another North End restaurant that we had loved for an annual gathering gave us a very difficult time about our reservation. Carmelina's couldn't have been MORE accommodating. The food was great, and the service was equally great. Our server even accommodated our tricky bill splitting needs."

  • "First, the food was wonderful--they can make anything to order and are accommodating of dietary restrictions. However, my first and only experience here has dissuaded me from ever returning again. I went with two other people to celebrate a friend's birthday. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. The meals were expensive and we ordered wine--so we had a considerable check. But we were rushed out after only being at the restaurant for 45 minutes. Both the waiter and hostess paced back and forth behind our table and mumbled "I really need to turnover these tables". I understand it's a small establishment and frequently turning over the tables is necessary, but there is a right way and a wrong way to encourage people to leave."

  • "I've been to Carmelina's a few times and this past time met my expectations. The food was very well done. The calamari and meatballs were both executed well. The meatballs were especially memorable. I had the rollati with prosciutto and fontina. It was in a lovely vodka-esque sauce which I devoured. The flavors were delicious, though I wasn't a fan of the crispiness at the top of the pasta. Since the entire dish was baked, I'm not sure if the pasta should have been covered in sauce to soften it, or if it was intentionally crispy. Either way, I would've preferred soft pasta. My boyfriend had the Sunday macaroni (which he always gets). They were out of short ribs which was sad, but they added extra sausage and meatballs which were both great."
