- Classic elegancetheLJCDined on 11/15/2014It's as everyone says – great ambiance, good food, slow service. This place really is a throwback to another time, but that's part of why I like it. You can have fast-paced, "trendy," New York dining anywhere, and there are more great spots for that than I can count. The Carlyle isn't one of them, but sometimes you need a place with traditional "old New York" elegance, and for that it can't be beat. Expect it to take a while to work your way through dinner, but with bottles of wine on the menu that are that good, who wants to rush? Come for a romantic dinner, relax, and enjoy the quiet ambiance that feels a world apart from the downtown experimental tasting spots du jour.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- Major disappointmentAussieatsDined on 11/14/2014My Wife and I have dined at The Carlyle before and enjoyed the ambience, the granduer of the space and the food and wine selections. On this occassion, only the enironmentals met our expectations. The food and service were both disappointing and way below what we have experienced previously. I began with the risotto which was " gluggy " uninteresting and virtually tasteless. The lobster thermidor followed with promise as a signature dish - what appeared was an expensive rendition of something that you could find in any low end, fash food chain. The service from the beginning was arrogant, disinterested and very slow. We left feeling underwhelmed and not inclined to return any time soon.Special Features:
- BonVivantDined on 11/12/2014Food and service were excellent. Torchon and Grand Marnier soufflé were to die for. And the rack of lamb was perfect. I'll be back next time I'm in NYC. Chris, United KingdomSpecial Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- MJHGDined on 10/30/2014Horribly overpriced; beautiful rooms, good food but much too expensive; service was pleasant but not outstandingSpecial Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- Anniversary DinnerLDuganVIPDined on 10/28/2014We celebrated a wonderful anniversary dinner at the Carlyle, a restaurant I had never been to before. Hard to believe as it is only a few blocks from our apartment in the city. I always thought it would be too stuffy and old, but the menu was fresh, the service was very attentive and the atmosphere was warm and inviting for a cold Fall evening. Scallops and Salmon were very nicely done with root vegetables, Foie gras was a lovely starter and for dessert was a Grand Marnier souffle, tasty. Overall a good celebratory evening.Special Features:
- Poor value for moneyanjerDined on 10/21/2014The restaurant has a nice atmosphere, however the food is basic for the money you pay. No appetizers or simple starters from the house. The carpaccio was more letuice then meat and nothing special. I would not recommend this placeSpecial Features:
- OverpricedgigigoodDined on 10/19/2014The setting is elegant, but the food and service were very mediocre. I would never recommend this restaurant. the lobster thermidore is supposed to be a Carlyle Classic, but there was very little lobster in the dish. The butternut squash soup and the grand marnier soufflé were both very good, and the veal chop was fine. One member of our foursome requested hot water that she never received.Special Features:
- Doesn´t live up to the famemariaDined on 10/7/2014For a restaurant of this level, it should have a much better service and an incredible food, and it doesn´t. Food is less than ok (the cacio e peppe pasta was really shameful) and service is reckless: they didn´t manage to serve us the starters at the same time as the main courses as requested and when we said something about it the waiter thought we were kidding. Very amateur. Not what you expect from a luxurious hotel restaurant.Special Features:
- The bestFrancieDined on 10/6/2014I have been to the Carlyle several times and each time I am amazed at the beauty of the venue, the warmth and welcoming staff and the very Special menu. The food is delicious and often different and whe. There I am contemplating whe. I can go the next time .Special Features:
- An Upper East Side ClassicNYDenizenDined on 9/24/2014The Carlyle Restaurant has been essentially unchanged for fifty years. It defines the world of 'upper class, quiet money', and is the kind of place that the true upper class dine. There is no 'scene' here, no bar (that's right outside, Bemelman's Bar at the Carlyle, which is a great spot itself, but something completely different), no entertainment (that's right outside too, the Cafe Carlyle, home over to the years to icons such as Bobby Short and July Collins). This is 'just' a restaurant, but a true classic. Service is over-the-top, the noise level is so quiet you could hear a pin drop, the average age of the diners is probably 60, but for true Special Occasions, romantic or otherwise, you can't beat it.Special Features:
- Excelled in service and foodHnlDinerVIPDined on 9/22/2014Special treat to enjoy lunch. Seafood salad was loaded with lobster and other goodies. Service was beyond expectations. Attentive and easily impressed our guests for the birthday celebration. Would definitely return for any special day or just to enjoy UES spot to eat.Special Features:
- 2014couplenycDined on 9/10/2014I was excited to try out the renowned Carlyle, but walked out disappointed. The quiet atmosphere is a welcome change from the noisy crowds, yet the cavernous rooms' carpet and over-plushed seating make the restaurant stuffy. The staff is very good with excellent table service. Food-wise, the French courses are at their utmost classic, with no hint of creativity. The undercooked then oven finished risotto got al-dente and crispy, not creamy as one may prefer (personal taste). The flavorful lobster bisque came in lukewarm. For this they comped us a dessert. The chocolate souffle could have been much darker, and comes with a creme anglaise pushing the sweetness over the top. The great wine list is impressive to even the most rarefied palates.Special Features:
- A pretty good placeluvs2eatDined on 9/6/2014I went with the Travelzoo discount and I was really surprised by how fast the courses arrived. They really knew how to turn the tables (we were paying a ton less than people usually do, as our waiter pointed out) but I can't say I was too upset as the food was all pretty good.Special Features:
- rwhiteesqDined on 9/5/2014The lead server was not very attentive at all. This is especially troubling in light of the fact that gratuity was already included because of my travel zoo voucher.Special Features:
- Old-world classIcequeenAUDined on 9/5/2014Bemelmans Bar is a cultural icon and must be experienced. Lovers of the children's book, Madeleine, will be amazed and charmed by the murals. The restaurant is gorgeous. It harkens back to an earlier era, when you could arrive in evening wear, and relax in elegant surroundings. Charles, our server, and the support staff were wonderful and treated us as if we were old friends. For an elegant evening out, the Carlyle is a must. Jackets required, fellas (thank heavens!). 12 out of 10.Special Features:
- Your mansion for an eveningNYC1Dined on 9/3/2014This is an elegant experience - dining at its finest but set in the warmth of an elegant dining room in your own private mansion. The restaurant has a cozy, intimate feeling but it is classic elegance but elegance not overdone. Everything is done to perfection is décor and ambiance. In addition there is not one bad seat in the house. No one faces a wall - this is extremely considerate. The service is excellent and professional with the staff taking dining to an art form. But most of all, the menu is varied with imagination and a well-rounded wine list. We visit New York City between 4 and 6 times a year and this is my favorite New York City restaurant. This is world class. It is a relaxed elegance.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- fabulous in every wayloreDined on 8/13/2014Outstanding, beautiful, special. The food was wonderfully prepared and served. I always think the price of the wine is out of proportion to the meal. It shouldn't cost half as much to pour a glass when the chef goes to such lengths to make a beautiful plate.Special Features:
- Elegant but PriceyCTGALVIPDined on 8/8/2014$20 martinis set the tone at the bar. But I guess that's the price to pay for being part of the swanky scene. Early entertainment is free, but then there's a cover charge. Restaurant is nice, but expensive. How many places still have separate lines for server gratuity and captain gratuity?Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- sasgVIPDined on 8/8/2014The restaurant has consistently excellent food and service. The new lunch and dinner menus provide a good selection of dishes. The wait staff is the best in NYC.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- way out of its league.SirmeusDined on 8/2/2014Sad; very disappointed. living off its legacy this place needs an overhaul of its menu, plastic flower decor, and its staff. Way overpriced. poorly conceived wine menu, and just poor quality...but make sure you're wearing a suit.

- Amazing foodIkatfloralDined on 7/12/2014I went for the first time with my friend as I bought a travelzoo coupon. The food was excellent and the services was not very good. Each dish for both mine and my friend's were delicious. The restaurant was so beautiful. I will recommend everyone to try on their food.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.

- Fine diningsasgVIPDined on 7/11/2014Fine food preparation, presentation and attentive service. Elegant yet cordial with good food choices. Willing to accommodate special dietary needs and requests. Captains, waiters and busboys always try to please. Comfortable chairs, tables spaced so that you can hear your guests, beautifully appointed room.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- FergsVIPDined on 7/8/2014Good food, very attentive service by highly knowledgeable staff, and very expensive. Ambience is romantic, upscale.Special Features:
- Dinner with travelzoo voucherNjoythemomentDined on 6/28/2014The host Carlos excepted voucher upon arrival! They had given us the travelzoo menu placed the order including desert! Carlos waited 4 us to complete desert b 4 explainin that the voucher had expired 15 days ago! He mentioned everything will b charged à la carte which was completely wrong as he already committed n never gave us the options to order from a priced menu! He kept making up stories on travelzoo and hotel policies which were completely made up as travelzoo mentioned it was incorrect! He completely scam us by doubling the charge of $125 dinner to $214 than once he took the credit card he added on gratuity n captain charges for 2 diners which came 2 $270!! Just a sleazy way of doin business! Be aware of their dishonest n practice!
- Elegant Dining703jamesVIPDined on 6/5/2014This restaurant offers a special dining experience. The quality of the food, presentation and portion size was outstanding. Service too was attentive and not overbearing.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- It doesnt get any betterBillVIPDined on 6/1/2014First of all there is class and more ultra class. Nothing is forgotten about The appetizers a special crab meat made unbelievably with a onion ring garnishing and a wegyu beef carpacio. The sparkling wine Vive cliquot and a nice flute of light chardonnay to go with lobster thermidors. What a delight of lobster mushroom and special sauce and other sides. The bread to die for. The crème Brule so rich and even the fresh fruit topping was topnotch and a lemon tart so tasty. The room, the view, the flowers, the chandeliers, the Bebelmans piano bar. I thought I saw Bobby Short and Kitty Carlisle. Forty nice leather banquet seats with pillows. Coffee and everything there is supreme and the service and staff amazing. Quite a memorable evening.Special Features:
- It was ok!FoodieGirl67Dined on 5/26/2014It was just ok! The food was good, nothing wow about it. The waiter was slow as molasses, and not very attentive or pleasant. He seemed upset that I didn't order an appetizer. The table was not properly cleared between courses. Also they have these ridiculous candle holders that the shades were all askew, just a peeve.Special Features:
- Good and not so goodRichDined on 5/24/2014Arrival handled well. Good sized table -with my wife and myself placed side by side back to wall facing restaurant. Attentive service, with sparkling water served frequently. Dessert wine by the glass was not available but excellent substitute and accompanied delicious foie gras. Special of the day was beef Wellington - delicious joint and perfectly cook but served at borderline temperature. But the. 2 glasses of red wine (ordered on arrival) were not served then and we had to chase them and they arrived 5 mins after beef served. The soufflé was to die for, took 15/20 mins but would have been good to reference that option before hand. Ambience very quiet and decor beautiful. Price reflected quality of hotel, service and food.Special Features:
- Food is fairFrequentTravellerDined on 5/21/2014The menu is outdated. Food is rich and heavy. Classics for the restaurant, but I can hardly ever find something healthy and light I stay at the hotel 5-6 times a year, and would like something better in-house.Special Features:
- elegant night outberlinjoeDined on 5/17/2014We were in New York for the weekend and wanted a special dining experience. We had stayed at the Carlyle some years ago and we were delighted with our experience; excellent, elegant service with special attention from the captain and the servers. We were very pleased with the evening.Special Features:
- Terrible service and worse foodJeevesVIPDined on 5/15/2014Waiter greeted us by asking if we were on the Travelzoo 'coupon' program. "What?" we said. No, we were there as VIP foodie diners. Then it took him forever to take our order. When he started, he cut me off and turned to an older couple that he knew and left me hanging. Then, he flitted around the room to take another diner's order and they had arrived after us. I confronted him, he barely apologized. So, BAD SERVICE. My veal was not cooked well as ordered. The bread was soggy. Water had crumbs in it. My wife's fish was average. The soufflés were inedible. THIS PLACE IS TERRIBLE UNLESS YOU AN OLDER REGULAR. THEN, ITS STILL TERRIBLE BUT YOU ARE USED TO IT. Plus, there is little salt or taste in at the food due to the clientele.Special Features:
- Very nice, but...RBTVVIPDined on 5/5/2014The food was good, the service prompt, professional and courteous. Absolutely nothing wrong. But, at these prices one expects to have a very special evening. And that, the Carlyle did not deliver.
- OpenTable Diner Since 2011Dined on 5/2/2014Had a wonderful meal at the Carlyle Restaurant. Beautiful decor, food, drink and service. Would definitely recommend this place.Special Features:
- старомодный ресторанGotovimbaDined on 5/2/2014Ничего особенного,ожидали намного большего. Яйца Бенедикт были хороши, но не на 25 долларов
- Over the topLennyDined on 4/26/2014The decor and ambience are extraordinary. The service was excellent. The food was over the top. I would highly recommend the Carlyle and will return frequently.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- Old New York DiningnjfoodieDined on 4/25/2014The Carlyle Restaurant lives up to its reputation. The food and service were excellent and is very romantic and quiet. While the drinks from the bar are pricey, the food and service still make this old New York dining a real gem.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- Easter DinnerBarbaraDined on 4/20/2014The monkfish was amazing and my aunt thoroughly enjoyed her lamp chops. Our captain, Chuck, was very personable and the service was excellent. We go to the Carlyle every year when we are in NYC. I have recommended it to all of my friends. I look forward to my next visit.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
