Diner Reviews
  • "The monkfish was amazing and my aunt thoroughly enjoyed her lamp chops. Our captain, Chuck, was very personable and the service was excellent. We go to the Carlyle every year when we are in NYC. I have recommended it to all of my friends. I look forward to my next visit. "

  • "Food is excellent, but service is poor, they only come around when is time for grabbing the check and tips."

  • "Not many like it in NY. Refined elegance , gracious service. Priced accordingly . Welcoming and helpful staff."

  • "He is the captain at lunch and is without parallel"

  • "They added the gratuity to my cc without telling me ( I had correctly tipped in cash- the waiter AND the captain ) and when I called to get it removed the manager made up a crazy story that it was the banks fault & the bank charged me a " deposit " coincidently for the exact amount of a 20% tip instead of being truthful & saying the waiter assumed we were tourists and wouldn't notice. SCAM. I would NEVER dine there again, it was beyond rude and an insult to my intelligence and they should be embarrassed."

  • "My wife treated me to dinner here for my birthday. Everything was 1st Class. My only disappointment was that I was looking forward to trying the Lobster Bisque that I have read so much about. However, my wife pointed out that on the menu it noted that it included tarragon which is my least favorite spice. I opted for the soup du jour which was excellent."

  • "This fabulous hotel in a mega location was fantastic from the minute i arrived till i left. Service was out of this world, very attentive staff. It was a lovely atmosphere, restaurant was so nice and furnished to a high standard. Enjoyed the food and i shall pop back on my next trip to The Big Apple"

  • "The Carlyle was a birthday present for my wife. It was a stellar experience. We were pampered and catered to from our arrival to our exit. Charles, the Captain, made my wife feel special. We had crab cakes and jumbo shrimp to start and the presentation was artistic. The Entrees were an oral delight. My scallops were cooked to perfection. My wife's lobster was so good that after the first morsel she was speechless. I will say this, the Carlyle is proof that you get what you pay for. Good atmosphere, good food and good service."

  • "It was seriously appaling. To see a place that was so good be so bad... They brought my plate cold and then I had to say something because it was uneatable and then they brought it cold again. Annnd the desert was not even room temperature but COLD - warm chocolate cake."

  • "We were not disappointed in experiencing the Carlyle. A local-ish friend came to join us there on our visit from the West Coast. Wonderful atmosphere and service. The food, however, couldn't have been more bland."

  • "This is a very special place to be enjoyed with a loved one in one of the best neighborhoods in NYC."
    Dined on 2/19/2014
  • "1) lobster bisque was a over salted. 2) saffron risotto undercooked. 3) eggs in grandmarnier souffle were very undercooked . 4) crab cake, monkfish and herbed chicken were all very good."

  • "The ambience and comfort level was amazing. I ordered the beef tenderloin and the BF ordered the 28oz for himself, yes he eats that much. The food was good but something you can find anywhere else. The service was spectacular. Our waiter, Chuck, was a great conversationalist without being to chatty. I would go again, on the strength that it was the way you should eat - slow and relaxed, not rushed."

  • "With most places new or venerable getting stripped down and painted white like most everyone's apartments, why would you want to go somewhere that looks just like where you hibernate? The answer is sometimes it's really nice to liven up your eyes and taste buds with lovely. Here's a term that has basically exited our vocabularies. 'Lovely' means every moment is replete with satisfying sensory feedback. The walls have color and designs that occupy your eyes. The chairs are designed to sit in for a long meal. The layout is designed so you can watch others enjoying it as well. As for the food, 'the Ladies who lunch' menu, (see Elaine Stritch in 'Company') 3 courses, free wine, $42 and not just for ladies."

  • "The place, the food, the ambience and service were the real experience, the meaning of classic New York. Had a wonderful experience with my girlfriend. I definitely recommend it."

  • "My wife and I went for a date night - best lobster bisque we've had - complex flavors beyound the typical. Lobster Thermador was excellent as well. Paired with a 1967 Italian Nebbiolo, and an after drink in the piano bar afterwords - a evening to remember. Can't worry about price though, just have fun and enjoy!"

  • "Food out of this world, wine list (one of best I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot), restaurant not overly big, tables well-spaced, service outstanding. Have one of their soufflés to end your meal. I think I found a new favorite!"

  • "We took 2 senior ladies to lunch and they loved it."

  • "Horrible food!! The worst that I have had for that price They charge 180 per person for the food that should be no more than 50 per person Horrible !!!!"

  • "The Carlyle Restaurant is a must -do place to dine. I took my friend there for her birthday and we loved the decor, food, and service. We each "made our own salads" and were impressed with the amount of food. The attention we were given was "top shelf." It's such an elegant place to dine and is fit for any special celebration. There's even a "Ladies Who Do Lunch Price Fix" menu...three courses for $42 per person."

  • "Enjoyed our return trip to this elegant spot. Food was solid but service was not; it took 20 minutes to get a cocktail."

  • "They sat me in a side room which was more quiet but the service was remiss. They offered me the $65 pre fixed menu but said that I could have regular brunch. I had to ask several times to see the regular menu. The regular menu had no brunch or breakfast offerings so they just said "whatever you want to order". Anyway, I ordered the Bobby Short chicken hash with truffles. I could barely taste the truffles (which I adore) and dish was so so. The bread selection was very nice. The dining facility is much nicer than the overall design of the rooms. I stayed there three nights and thought would be nice to end up with the brunch. It was quite lovely but uneventful."

  • "Great service in a true traditional restaurant. Great place to eat before seeing Steve Tyrell in Café Carlyle during the month of December. Very festive!!"

  • "My wife and I have been customers for many years of special occasions and the restaurant always delivers the goods. Norbert, the captain, is simply the best, as is his staff. Great cocktails too. Cheap, no! Worth it, yes!!!"

  • "Carlyle is a great place to find that rarity in New York City--a QUIET, elegant place where you can hear your conversations. Its old-world ambience is elegant, timeless and soothing, the service outstanding, and the food is gourmet quality. If is also affordable if you opt for the prix-fixe lunch. When you feel like treating yourself, this is the place to go."

  • "I did not expect such great restaurant. The service, the food and the ambience are just impecably GREAT. Try the lobster!"
    Dined on 11/4/2013
  • "Don't expect imaginative, complex food offerings, just well-prepared, ample-sized dishes that won't leave you wondering what you got for your money. The entrecote (sirloin) for two was enormous, delicious, and worth the steep price-tag. The meal was greatly enhanced by the elegant surroundings, comfortable seating, and well-spaced tables."

  • "Our 26th anniversary celebration, since last year's 25th was destroyed by "superstorm" Sandy, was an event to remember. The food and service impeccable, Dover sole for two served table side and the sauce was devilishly delicious. Our server was a dr boning master/server who made us feel comfortable, yet special. Kudos to you, Carlyle!!"

  • "I did not like the lobster thermidor. There was not much lobster for the price of $55 (the most expensive entree on the regular menu), it was tough and the seasoning/sauce was overwhelming for the mild taste of lobster. The waiter brought out a small dish of foil wrapped chocolate and a small dish of cookies with dessert. The chocolate tasted like soap and, when we notified our waiter of this, he said other people have also complained about the chocolate. If that's the case, he should have put it in the trash along with the very hard stale cookies. Unfortunately Restaurant Daniel is closed on Sundays and I wanted to go out on the day of my birthday. I look forward to my next dinner at Restaurant Daniel."

  • "Awful service. We had to wait for over an hour just to get our salad. They do not care if you have to wait there for ever to get your meal. I do not mind paying for an expensive restaurant, but this place is not at all worth it. Skip it....there are so many restaurants in the city that have excellent food and service at that price point."
    Dined on 10/19/2013
  • "I was there for my 1 year anniversary dinner with my boyfriend and the captain talked our ears off the whole time I feel like we barely had a chance to get into a nice conversation. Every few minutes he would come back and just keep talking to us. Very rude and inconsiderate in my opinion."
    Dined on 10/18/2013
  • "Lobster bisque was xlnt, as was black cod. Fluke (special of day was good. Grand Marnier soufflés were inedible, & sent back. Had difficulty getting server's attention for bill."

  • "When I was a child (a long time go) my parents always raved about The Carlyle Hotel. Recently on my honeymoon, we had the opportunity to have dinner in the main dining room. We were hoping to see Woody Allen in the Café but we were too late for that. In any event, the main dining room is an elegant setting that evokes the timeless panache of old money NYC. The food was outstanding as was the service. The experience is not inexpensive but then what is a lifetime memory worth?"
