Diner Reviews
  • "The trout-salmon duo consisted of fish that was overcooked despite the fact that medium rare had been specified. The two fillets were atop mashed potatoes that lacked flavor. All of that floated on a bed of mixed vegetables and sauce that were also lacking in character. Very good service cannot overcome food that is so disappointing."

  • "The lists of snacks and main dishes would not be out of place in most any French bistro. The special feature, that is usually lacking in the US, is that the food tastes like French cuisine! Food seems prepared with imagination and elan. Also, reasonably priced."

  • "I have been to the Caribou Cafe for lunch numerous times, and it never disappoints. The food is very good, and there is quite a variety of dishes to choose from. The service is fine and very professional. We sat in a booth in the back, and it was very quiet, and no one rushed us to leave."

  • "I was very happy with our dinner , it was our second time there and we did enjoy every thing about this place, we started with the curry mussles and a salad , it was great I loved the sauce of the mussles , for dinner I had a french pepper steak that I enjoyed a lot. Was perfectly cooked with excellent pepper sauce , my wife ordered a salmon dish that she liked as well, our server was very nice and very knowledgable . We will be back soon for another french fun night"

  • "One of my favorite lunch spots in Center City. Love the ambiance and nice selection of meals. The food is nicely prepared and a good value."

  • "I enjoyed the quiche and salad combo. Quiche is the lightest ever. My friend enjoyed her burger. I have been lunching at this place for many years. I love the French bistro ambiance. The servers are courteous and helpful. This place is a little oasis of charm to brighten your day."

  • "This was not our first time at Caribou, but it was certainly the best. The staff was professional and friendly. We started with red wine (I forget the name, but it was delicious), then ordered a cheese plate and an escargots. The sauce had us asking for more bread to soak it up with. The entrees were excellent and the dessert du jour, a warm berry tart with ice cream, finished the meal out well. We cannot wait to go back!"

  • "An outstanding restaurant in every way! I dine here at least once a month, and the food is always spectacular. The specials change daily and are excellent and the menu is outstanding as well. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone."

  • "We stumbled across Caribou during a romantic walk in center city when we noticed the quaint outside seating area and decided to try it out. We made a reservation and it was a great decision. The cocktail list offered interesting concoctions and the wines were excellent, as well. The onion soup was better than Paris and the steak tartare is to die for. The salmon and trout duo was seared to perfection. The meal was brought to its zenith with the melt-in-your-mouth bread pudding that has to be tasted to be believed. The atmosphere reminded us of France. This is an excellent restaurant for a romantic date, or even just to have some delicious beers and watch a game. I highly recommend Caribou to anyone, and we will definitely be back."

  • "I had lunch there several times years ago. Decided to bring my husband for dinner before a show. The drinks were great. The menus were dirty. Unfortunately, the food was not as I remember it. The server had no idea what the fish of the day was and when I asked she said, I was just told Trout! Though, the servers were very friendly. Very disappointing. Not sure if i would return as there are too many other great restaurants to chose."

  • "Have dined here before and were pleased with our previous dining experience. Have not dined here for some time and feel that something has changed. Although the service was good, as well as the Pastis, Kir, and Rose', the bread and salads were very disappointing. The bread was dry/stale and the Nicoise salad was not at all complex/interesting with a chunk of salmon plopped on spartan greens, which had little and not flavorable salad dressing. My wife's salad with lardons was not good also, basically for the same reasons. Hope that Caribou Cafe can correct some of the above shortcomings."

  • "Had a great Fathers Day brunch with family. Second time there. Great french and international fare. Friendly staff. Welcoming atmosphere. Quality food. A real gem near Forrest Theater."

  • "Our first time dining here everything was great. The food was enjoyable, hot, and the menu interesting. So we came back. Between the 4 of us we were all disappointed. Our hamburgers were over cooked and did not have any lettuce on them even though we asked for it. The salad was limp and the dressing bland. The pasta dish with lamb sounded good but the lamb was tough. We were going to a show and limited on time otherwise we would have asked for our burgers to be redone and to medium rare as we first requested them and not overdone and flavorless. We're not sure if we would try this place again given the fact that Philly has so many other options."

  • "Just an average lunch. Nothing spectacular. Service was not good. Had to ask for napkins, bread plates and one order out of 3 was wrong. Not very crowded so it wasn't because they were swamped."

  • "Our food was delicious, not particularly innovative, which was fine with us. If you want a very nice lunch with attentive service, you won't go wrong here. Ambiance is interesting and feels vaguely European which is nice, in the middle of Philly. Live far away so have only been at lunch time."

  • "A great dinner, located close to the Walnut Street Theatre. Took us on time, food was prompt and delicious!"

  • "This was our second dinner at Caribou Cafe.. The first dinner was outstanding, with excellent service, nice ambiance upstairs, and wonderful classic French food ( boeuf bourgignon / shrimp and quenelle in lobster sauce ). We returned two weeks later. The food was still great, but a different menu, simpler fare, none of the more complicated classics. We opted for crepes fruits de mer and were not disappointed...lovely. Service was indifferent and slow this time, the upstairs area not open, and noise level from American pop music playing loudly, definitely marring the experience. We will return for another meal next time we are in Philadelphia, hoping that the experience will be much more like our initial dinner at Caribou Cafe."

  • "Twice a year they change their menu to reflect the season. We enjoyed the 4 dishes that we ordered. The crepe was excellant as was the duck confit . The salmon and trout was good, but not outstanding."

  • "Big smiles all around our table of nine, with ages from 19 to 86, for a family dinner celebrating a college graduation. We had a quiet table on the upper level, and the service was friendly, attentive, and well-paced. Everyone found things they enjoyed on the menu, wine list, and dessert menu. Special requests were gladly and successfully accommodated. I sure seemed smart for having picked the Caribou! "

  • "But not overly great. One of the waiters wore a filthy apron and seemed like he wished to be elsewhere. Food was good but in a City where food is extraordinary, it fell below that mark. "

  • "We were pleased to find a bit of France tucked away on Walnut Street. We enjoy coming here after the opera, and it's especially nice to have true French-style choices on the menu. The chef's pâté is always good and their other dishes are excellent as well. It was a bit noisy early Sunday evening but we could still hold a conversation with our friends in normal voices. We will be back."

  • "I have never written a review on this or any site and I hoped to save it for a positive experience but I can not let this one go by. This may have been, hands down, the most terrible dining experience of my life. I refuse to waste anymore of my time on this place but let's just say we should have left when all the tables around us started walking out. 2.5 hours later I was in my seat starving with none of the wait staff making eye contact with any patrons. I can't believe this place is in business. "

  • "Nice French style bistro. Everything was excellent except for one tiny detail. My wife had the shrimp with lobster sauce in a puff pastry. The shrimp were microscopic, the type that obviously came from a bag of frozen grocery store style shrimp. With everything else being so tasty, it seemed like a silly shortcut. Overall, a good diner but it would have been so easy for it to have been great! We will be back soon for another try. "

  • "Onion soup tasted as if it came from a can; the primary flavor of the cassoulet was raw tomato & garlic with a small (very small) taste of pork. All in all a poor effort, and fairly dear at $62 for one person...suffice to say I will NOT return!"

  • "The same folks run Bistro Zinc around the corner. It is basic, good French food at both. The prices are fair. The service is fine. I have been eating here for years. It is reliable and dependable."

  • "As someone who grew up with a French father who was a master chef and having lived in France, the first few visits were a pleasant surprise. I have encouraged many friends to eat there and had placed it as #1 on my list of places to go to in Philly for French food. Well, on this visit the food didn't merit the super accolades. Perhaps the chef was having a bad day but it will be a while before I return."

  • " Three of four meals were excellent. The Beef Bourgendy was good but the meat a little dry. The escargot appetizer was truly the best escargot I have ever eaten. Restaurant very convenient fr Walnut St. Theater"

  • "My partner and I have become quite fond of Caribou. We were there with friends Saturday who had never been and they were equally pleased. The bartender, though very busy, gave us the necessary attention and made great cocktails. Although the restaurant was close to full, service was above average, our server knowledgable about the menu, and the noise level was tolerable. It's a casual vibe, heavy with delightful French influences, and topped off with wonderful food."

  • "We had delicious onion soup, one of the best we've ever had. Hamburger was fabulous and the bread and butter....the best.....huge portions. Can't wait to go back."

  • "We went for brunch and it was delicious. I had the croque-madame which was basically grilled cheese with an egg on top - not what I had anticipated (no bechamel sauce) but none the less it hit the spot and was very tasty. My husband had an omelet that had potatoes, ham, Gruyere cheese and it was full of flavor and fluffy. I would highly recommend this cafe. The ambiance was quaint and charming. They had seating outside but it was too cold for us - a nice warm day would be perfect for alfresco dinning."

  • "We pick this restaurant because of the reviews on Open Table; perhaps we were there on an off night. But I don't think so. The food and service was fair at best. The wine list was very ordinary."

  • "I was in town for a conference and didn't want a meal at a chain (I always search out "local" spots). The Caribou cafe did not disappoint. The food was excellent - I ordered the prix fixe dinner at $28. My crepe was ham, gruyere and egg (just like in France!!!) and came with a salad, so I really did not need the endive salad I ordered to start with -- but I really, really enjoyed it. Dessert was my favorite - creme brûlée. The ambience was quite nice - an old building with creaky wood floors. We sat upstairs along a narrow balcony overlooking the main dining room. That helped diminish the noise level, but even that couldn't distract from the excellent fare. I will definitely dine here again when back in Philadelphia. "

  • "Had dined at Caribou several years ago and seemed to recall that there really was some French food on the menu. The French onion soup was OK on this most recent visit. The crepes were somehow fried together into a large log-like affair and a bit starchy. Good pub food but a bit on the pricy side for pub fare and somewhat of a disappointment from what I remembered. I must also add that the noise level at this eatery bordered on inner ear damaging."
