Diner Reviews
  • "My partner and I have become quite fond of Caribou. We were there with friends Saturday who had never been and they were equally pleased. The bartender, though very busy, gave us the necessary attention and made great cocktails. Although the restaurant was close to full, service was above average, our server knowledgable about the menu, and the noise level was tolerable. It's a casual vibe, heavy with delightful French influences, and topped off with wonderful food."

  • "We have been frequenting Caribou for many years. The food has been consistently good. Very good. Last week the Cassis Sorbet was back on the menu. I recommend that you try it! The staff are always efficient especially if you say that you are going to the theatre. I like to sit upstairs so that I can "people watch". Caribou is a definite repeat venue for me!"

  • "We had delicious onion soup, one of the best we've ever had. Hamburger was fabulous and the bread and butter....the best.....huge portions. Can't wait to go back."

  • "We pick this restaurant because of the reviews on Open Table; perhaps we were there on an off night. But I don't think so. The food and service was fair at best. The wine list was very ordinary."

  • "We went for brunch and it was delicious. I had the croque-madame which was basically grilled cheese with an egg on top - not what I had anticipated (no bechamel sauce) but none the less it hit the spot and was very tasty. My husband had an omelet that had potatoes, ham, Gruyere cheese and it was full of flavor and fluffy. I would highly recommend this cafe. The ambiance was quaint and charming. They had seating outside but it was too cold for us - a nice warm day would be perfect for alfresco dinning."

  • "Had dined at Caribou several years ago and seemed to recall that there really was some French food on the menu. The French onion soup was OK on this most recent visit. The crepes were somehow fried together into a large log-like affair and a bit starchy. Good pub food but a bit on the pricy side for pub fare and somewhat of a disappointment from what I remembered. I must also add that the noise level at this eatery bordered on inner ear damaging."

  • "We arrived at 6:10 to a mostly empty restaurant, and saw no reason to expect any service issues, but by 7:30, when we had to get going to make our 8:00 concert (and when the restaurant had filled up), we had yet to be offered dessert or coffee and had to press for our check. This is the first time here that we have had that experience as service before has always been prompt and efficient. We noticed that our server made a separate trip to accomplish every step of his work, unlike more experienced wait staff who have an efficient workflow that enables them to handle several jobs at once. Perhaps he was new at the job. The food, as usual, was just fine."

  • "When I want to treat myself, I go to Caribou. I love the food, the service is always good, and it's just a cute restaurant! I've been here for lunch, dinner, and my birthday before. Definitely recommend!"

  • "I made reservations for lunch for an out-of-town friend and myself. My croque madame (hot ham and gruyere sandwich with a sunny-side egg on top) was delicious. My friend loved her pizza and salad. These foods sound very plain, but at this cafe, they taste far better than plain. Service was excellent and yet not cloying; the servers are very friendly and make you feel quite welcome. The noise level downstairs was moderate, which is saying something in Center City, where most restaurants are off-the-charts noisy. All in all, a favorite lunch spot...and it's also great for dinner."

  • "We enjoyed the salmon with leeks and mushrooms, our friends enjoyed the pasta and trout dishes. We had house salads, which we shared for appetizers. The chocolate mousse was delicious. Next time, we need to leave more time to enjoy the ambiance before rushing out to the theater!"

  • "Anytime I can get a perfect croque Madame, is a good day. And the frites were pretty tasty also. I am a great fan of dessert and they have a mini smorgasbord sampling that was fantastic. All in all, I had a lovely visit..Merci beaucoup ."

  • "Really nice eclectic cafe. Food choices cover the range expected in a small French cafe. Skate wing to sausages, steak to salad. Nice wines by the glass. Reasonably priced and prompt service. Tables are too small and feel a bit confining - especially when seated on the balcony. A nice evening out; a nice meal before the Walnut Street Theatre. Enjoy!"

  • "This restaurant was an excellent find. The menu was classic French Bistro. I started with a wonderful pate of the day followed by a hearty cassoulet of white beans, pork and duck confit. This was a hearty and delicious dish. My wife had the beet salad and choucroute, an Alsatian dish of sauerkraut, and three different sausages which was simply delicious. The staff and our waiter were extremely friendly and welcoming. They went out if their way to accommodate us and others on a very busy night."

  • "Had yet another wonderful meal here - love that this place is consistent and churns out wonderful food every time. As always, get the remoulade with your frites."

  • "Our group of five was hoping to have a quiet burch in a modestly priced restaurant after a couple of busy days touring. We enjoyed everything about this place! Our waitress, Jessica, was very pleasant and accommodating; the quiche of the day was extraordinary; the casual ambience was inviting; and the music struck just the right chord. Don't miss this cafe within walking distance of the Convention Center."

  • "Caribou Cafe is my favorite place for dinner before heading to Lantern Theater Company - terrific classic French bistro fare, charming atmosphere, good service."

  • "The food was quite good, service friendly if a tiny bit slow. We had reservations and were seated quickly. Our table was upstairs, which was fine; nice overview of the whole area, and a little bit of a view to the outside. I would definitely go back."

  • "Had a nice dinner on our way to Walnut Street Theater. Service was attentive to our timing needs which we really appreciated. Had a delicious onion soup (it was a cold night!) and the salmon which was great. Wasn't a fan of the trout... but in general the meal was wonderful."

  • "Went on a busy pre-theater night (us, too) but have done same numerous times in past. We were seated in location that we specifically requested NOT to be (near entry door on cold night). Cesar salad was more like a chopped salad (not the usual, as I've had previously) and was told by server that it was a Cesar salad and they "change things periodically". It took a while for steak entrees to come which were pretty good, but long wait didn't leave us time for dessert. Willing to give the Bistro a 'mulligan' this time, but it has been better previously and hopefully will be better next visit."

  • "We had an early dinner with friends on a snowy, dreary day and was warmed by the atmosphere, the staff and great food. We love the cozy booths. Had a great evening."

  • "We went here on Valentine's day and they did not have a valentines day price fix menu, which was excellent. They did not make a big deal of it whatsoever, which was refreshing because so many restaurants use the opportunity to get more out of patrons. The food was excellent and so was the service. My one criticism was that the bar was slow. I would reccomend that they get on the same page as the wait the staff as I did not get a second drink because I didnt feel like waiting for it."

  • "The food was simply incredible, dishes came out quickly, service was attentive. The one negative was we were seated at one of the small tables by the front despite having a reservation. The tables didnt really work out too well with two plates of food, 2 cups of wine and water."

  • "The food was very good. The service was fine and timely, but not friendly. There is no personality to this place really, but if you're in it just for the food; do go! Again, the food is very good. The appetizers and salads were" foodie" excellent - outstanding in fact! My husband had a traditional French entree which he said was fabulous. I had a Roquefort steak which was cooked and seasoned perfectly, but wasn't a great piece of meat to begin with; typical grocery store cut with lots of gristle which is too bad because the chef cooked it just right. We liked the place overall. It has the potential to be a neighborhood gem, but nobody who works there seems to be enjoying themselves much."

  • "food was good, but nothing exceptional... service not organized and slow... onion soup arrived cold ... the rest of the food, the main entree's arrived one at a time with long spaces between each (had 10 people) - delivered by a different runner/server every time... it was really not clear who our actual server was at times... the one that was seemingly our main server was very aloof and did not seem to be in any type of 'hurry' and took his time... from the many years of dining out, i've never experienced food arriving in such a fashion... to their credit, they did step up to the plate when we mentioned we were in a big hurry for an event, and our check and desert arrived lickity split! overall, food good, service bad."

  • "Caribou is our favourite place for dinner before going to the theatre. The quality of the food being consistently good. I recommend the Blackcurrent Sorbet which is offered from time to time. Honestly we have never had a bad meal at Caribou. The staff are always attentive especially when they know that you don't have too much time. Great place to people watch also."

  • "although we had reservations and requested a booth, we were told they were crowded and our reply: thats why we made reservations. It didn't matter and we were taken upstairs to a room with tables, no atmoshere. the customer is never right! Will not go back!"

  • "We were headed to the Theater and wanted to grab a bite to eat before the Show. We were surprised at finding the bar filled and restaurant filled. We enjoyed the special salad and meal. No disappointments! Wish we had more time to enjoy energy in this place."

  • "We arrived before our reservation time - and there was no table then or even at the time of our reservation so the waitress/manager sent us around the corner and down two blocks to Zinc restaurant. We were given a free round of drinks for the inconvenience. Zinc was nice - but we were disappointed that we couldn't eat at Caribou and we had lost time. So while Zinc had good a good menu several choices were not available b/c we were going to the theater and there wasn't time. The service was fine. It just wasn't what we were expecting."

  • "Wife and I chose Caribou due to proximity to Lantern Theater. We enjoyed the décor (French bistro-esque) with the large bar. Food was good but not exceptional, but I didn't choose as well as I probably should have. Starter salads (endive and frisee) were very nice, perhaps even too large. We had the mussels (nice mussels, sauce was a little boring) and the steak frites (not a great steak, but perfectly cooked). Frites were the most disappointing part of the meal. A nice crème brulee and pot au crème for dessert. We'd certainly return but would try the more authentic French dishes next time."

  • "On a Wednesday, Caribou Cafe wasn't too booked and we were seated in a comfortable booth. The restaurant week special menu was delicious, wait staff was kind and courteous, meal was delicious. We had the leg of lamb and crab stuffed salmon, sauces were delicious. No complaints. Would definitely come back again. Reasonably priced french cuisine, may not be the best french your taste buds will experience, but above par."

  • "i chose this restaurant as a place to meet an old friend/former colleague. It was a great place for catching up! The food was great and there was a nice variety. The wait staff was attentive but not intrusive! And we weren't rushed so we had time to visit. Plus it was convenient to our hotels (we were attending a conference in Philly!). We both had the Salade Maison (house salad) which, while not quite as described on the menu, was still delicious. The Truite aux Amandes (Trout Almondine) was perfectly prepared and delicious. I'm on a weight plan so being able to find delicious food within my plan's guidelines was an added bonus!"

  • "Food was really good and the service was excellent. Wait staff were attentive but not overbearing. We were 3 for dinner and our table was too small. It would have been nice to be seated in a booth or somewhere other than the end of the upper hall overlooking the bar."

  • "Caribou won my heart immediately with its decor and ambience. I could almost be back in France - warm wooden bar, French wine and aperitif bottles as decor, small enough to be cozy but big enough for a good size group. Other wonderful finds, they had bottles of our favorite French cider and delicious savory crepes. My husband had one of their special three course meals which was reasonable and delicious. Can't wait to visit again."

  • "We were in town for a library conference, and the time coincided with our 42nd anniversary. We were fortunate getting 8 pm reservations on a Saturday night. Even though we showed up 10 minutes early we were promptly seated. This happened to be restaurant week, so the prix fixe that we thought we'd get had been replaced by the special menu which had less for us, so we went with a combination of lighter offerings. The seafood crepe was outstanding and the wine was generously poured. Had the chocolate mousse at the end, which was big enough for the two of us. Overall, an appropriate anniversary feast."
