A word from Cardwell's at the Plaza
Cardwell’s fuses the warmth & comfort of a neighborhood bistro with the elegance & attention to detail of fine dining. They appreciate what a restaurant experience can do to enhance the human spirit - how the clink of toasting Bordeaux glasses, the aroma of savories from a wood-burning oven, the relaxed mood set by candlelight & a rustic setting can turn the ritual of “going out to eat” into a celebration of food & good company.
A distinct American spirit is applied to all dishes while continuously offering guests surprises with both preparation & presentation. With a special devotion to local ingredients, the menu boasts both the heart of comfort food & the flair & balance of culinary complexity. Cardwell’s offers ample portions, hearty flavors, the spark of jazz & lively table conversation while delivering attentive service.

Diner Reviews
  • "Great service as usual from Phil. Deserts wonderful, entrees (salmon, pasta) interestingly prepared but over salted. Many chefs use too much salt, probably catering to seniors who have lost some sense of taste. "

  • "This is the restaurant my mom raves about every time she visits us. The quality if food is extremely consistent and the team of employees are very centered on the customer "

  • "The food and service are top notch. The manager sent out a special treat for our anniversary and it was so delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "This is a popular spot that always seems busy. We have been there a few times, but for the most part have never been very impressed. It has probably been a year since our last visit and we came a away feeling the same way."

  • "The Cardwells in Clayton can serve as an example. The service was slow , the food was just okay. The location is fabulous . They can be the gem they use to be."

  • "Very compatable for business lunches. Menu and daily specials were plentiful. Food was amazing. Will be back next time I am in St. Louis for meetings."
    Dined on 2/26/2014
  • "open tables were available in the front of the restaurant but we were passed over for these even though we had a reservation and were offered a table right on the busy corridor or a high top bar table. Service was only mediocre, used to be one of my favorite places, not so sure about that any more, food is still great but the rest needs improvement"

  • "The best salad ever, warm pear slices with warm fondue and Arigula, with , I think pickled onions, pecans, Pomegrannit (sp) seeds. Awesome!"

  • "It was a great lunch and the noise level was tolerable for a person with a hearing loss."

  • "Valentine's Day was tough for the restaurant as they fell behind significantly from reservation times. They were claiming that folks were staying longer than usual due to weather and the occasion. But while the staff was certainly cordial, it is a pretty significant inconvenience when one has a reservation for a special occasion to make folks wait this long, some more than half an hour. This wouldn't sit well at all for a romantic Valentine's date or important anniversary, etc, In my opinion, it would have been a very smart and good will gesture to offer a complimentary glass of wine or dessert or some such for those who had to wait. Other than that, great other than draft from outside entrance."

  • "We choose this place to see how it would compare to other places we have been for seafood and good steaks. My wife had the Salmon, and I had the rib eye. Both were very good. However, the ambiance of the restaurant seemed old and not very updated. We were assigned a table not too far from the door, and since it was a cold evening, when people came in we got the cold wind on us. Not sure we would return, it was acceptable, but that was about all. Nothing of real note that would compel us to return. Our waiter however was very friendly and served us very well."

  • "We met family for Valentine's day dinner. The waiter seemed distracted at first but improved. They were real busy. We enjoyed the place and the meal. We were not rushed in any way and all of the staff were helpful and cordial."

    Dined on 12/31/2013
  • "I love this place for the food, the convenience and the energy. It is always crowded and I always run into people I know. It is a fun place. My only problem is that sometimes it is too crowded and so loud you can't hear your table mates. It is also getting shabby and dated looking. Have they ever redecorated? I think a facelift and a little work on the acoustics would go a long way."
    Dined on 12/30/2013
  • "As always, the food, the service and the atmosphere were all top notch. The servers are real pros, there when you need them, not when you don't, and very courteous."

  • "delicious food, attentive wait staff, lively place for a ladies luncheon"
    Dined on 12/22/2013
  • "I have been here numerous times, but not in the last several months. Service was slow and food was not too good. I will give them another chance. We went on a Sun night. I wonder if that is the reason for the poor service/food?"
    Dined on 12/8/2013
  • "This is always a fun place...but very pricey...One appetizer, 2 salads and 3 glasses of wine was $65. FYI...A glass of wine is $12.50....it wasn't worth it!"

  • "Hillary's service was impeccable! The food and atmosphere, as always, were exceptional."
    Dined on 11/22/2013
  • "The Smoked Shrimp with Three Mustard Balsamic Glaze was fantastic and through it appeared on the menu as an appetizer, they immediately agreed to convert it to an entree when asked and suggested sides that were both delicious and complementary to the entree. I would also highly recommend the pear salad. The pears, while softened, still retained just enough structure to give them a nice consistency that I often find missing in similar attempts. The pickled onions also worked very well in this salad."

  • "We are a big fan of Cardwell's restaurants especially BC's Kitchen. On this occasion, the food was delicious as usual..I think our only negative was how noisy it was. We were a party of 6 at a round table & conversation was difficult..it definitely detracted from our overall experience."

  • "Nice environment, good service, great food, definitely a keeper"

  • "Cardwells at the Plaza is a restaurant that defies age. The seasonally adjusted menu is top notch, with standards, like the flash fried Calamari and the smoked jumbo shrimp always done to perfection. We sampled the pumpkin pasta, a strong seasonal highlight. The wine list is fantastic - loaded with mid-priced gems that won't break the bank. Never a bad meal, with solid service and ambiance."
