A word from Carbone
Carbone is an Italian-American restaurant created by Mario Carbone, Rich Torrisi and Jeff Zalaznick. The restaurant pays homage to the essence of the great Italian-American restaurants of mid-20th century in New York, where delicious, exceptionally well-prepared food was served in settings that were simultaneously elegant, comfortable and unpretentious. The food nods to that same history, but take its culinary cues from the great talents and techniques of the present and of the future. Familiar dishes like Seafood Salad, Linguini Vongole, Lobster Fra Diavola, Chicken Scarpariello and Veal Parmesan elevated to a new level.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Baked clams and caprese outstanding. Veal Parmesan excellent - but don't understand the hype. Carrot cake just awful - dry and chalky."

  • "It's was absolutely fab from the min we arrived! Service, food and the atmosphere"

  • "Enjoyed our meal here but to be honest, we won't return because it was just way too expensive. It was just my husband and I and we spent more than $300 for basic Italian-American dishes that were well-executed, yes, but I felt ripped off even as I ate and I just hate that feeling."

  • "Some good & some meh: Bass Allison: phenomenal, A+. Tortellini al Ragu: good, B+. Wines (a glass of Barbara & an Arneis): acceptable, B, but shockingly overpriced, even for here. Bread basket: unimpressive, C-. Complementary antipasti: C+ or B- but too much, even unnecssary--felt "forced," much like the ambience. We liked our waiter very much. Hosts & floor managers were drab, not warm at all to speak to, as though they did not care whether we were there. Music was alternatively kitschy & odd. 2 rooms, 1 rather bright, the other over dark. Artwork was poorly chosen, quite out of place (though artist is well known). Overall decor is forced. Dishware: chipped. Price$: outta control. Despite very good entrees wld not return, but worth 1 visit."

  • "Carbone was the most enjoyable dining experience I have ever had. The entire staff buys into the overall theme of the restaurant. The food was perfect."

  • "Carbone was absolutely delicious, as expected. The caprese salad with homemade mozzarella was divine, as were the clams casino. The spicy rigatoni was like a mac n cheese on steroids, and the veal parm was well worth the 55 bucks. Will definitely return time and time again!"

  • "We had dinner at Carbone and I must say, that we have been coming to New York for about 10 years and my wife said this was best restauarant we have ever eaten in NYC during that time. The food and level of service were just outstanding. And though it is extremely expensive the value for the dollar is well worth the expense"

  • "awesome food, divine actually. Great and very knowledgeable wait staff. Full of business types though, felt I should have been doing a business deal instead of lunch with friends?"

  • "Friendly staff and great food, especially the rigatoni! Our new favorite NYC restaurant!!"

  • "I was dying to try this restaurant and was finally able to get a reservation last Sunday night at 10pm. The food was amazing, the best Italian food I've had in a long time and the place was nice and classy. However the service was very disappointing and it ruined our experience. It was our last night in NYC and we wanted to have a great night. We had no budget, ordered an expensive bottle of wine did not even have time to finish it because we got served in about 5 minutes. The excuse we got was that it was Sunday night and late, so they basically want to go home. The air conditioning was so strong we kindly asked to lower it down but they never did. Overall, still a great place but avoid going on Sunday night!"

  • "Amazing food and finest New York Italian experience. The food is terrific...the service is impeccable and the vibe, energy and ambience outstanding. I can't recommend highly enough."

  • "We were quite late, but Carbone still took us in after 2pm. Though rushed, I couldn't help noticing 2 things, the great combination of detail Italian decor subtly infused with the Tribeca factory encasement, and the number of Italians having lunch there. Without much adieu, our charming waiter helped us find our light pasta. The bread he then brought us was not only fresh from the ground up, it was freshly roasted with garlic, butter and herbs, and they supplimented it with warm home-made mozerella. That free basket of bread knocked me off my chair. The pasta came pronto, but the sauces were delicate and distinctly fresh. The meal ended with a perfect traditional tiramisu with a great friendly smile. I can't wait to go back..."

  • "Delicious food, the best of classic Italian dishes, beautiful ambiance, excellent service, fantastic wine list."

  • "Service was good, but food was not tasty. A tasty food is exactly what you expecta from an italian restaurant."
    Dined on 6/2/2014
  • "Serves a classic Italian food modernized by talented young chefs, Carbone and Torrisi. For the food served there, it was way overpriced. Wondered if it really deserves Michelin one star. "

  • "I am always skeptical any time a place is THAT hard to get a table at. Most restaurants can never live up to their own hype, especially in NYC. But this place was that good. I felt our waiter didn't have the best chemistry with us, but as I looked around the restaurant, everyone else seemed to be getting great service. So while I would deduct a point for my personal experience in this regard, I can't say I think the restaurant has less than excellent service. The food was so good it was dumb. That's all I can say and you can't order wrong. Just let them bring you a wine to match, sit back, and inhale. You will feel fatter when you get up to leave, but you will feel happy fat, not gross fat. Do yourself a favor and get a table. "

  • "The restaurant was out of both the appetizer and entree that I ordered from the regular menu! At lunch time on a Wednesday! The substitute entree, vongole, was filled with more hot green peppers than clams and was too spicy to eat, with no mention that the dish contained hot peppers from the wait staff. "

  • "The restaurant gas a really nice service, with great food, the bufala mussarella with the bruscreta eas great, the veal parm and the meatballs were perfect.... All the dishes are good to share, so order diferent ones for everybody.."

  • "Very expensive but VERY good. Classic italian dishes executed perfectly. The service was impeccable. Recommend the meatballs. Remember to leave room for dessert-- the carrot cake and blackout cake were heavenly. "

  • "Despite arriving on time, we waited about twenty minutes for the table. The atmosphere is pleasant and the food delicious and well presented. Just thought the waiter gives us a rush to finish our meal, taking the fork in our hand and removing the dishes, although we have not finished eating!"

  • "A special evening. Wonderful ambience, fabulous food, amazing background music, very professional waiter. Veal parm to die for and we will be back. "

  • "Service was prompt and attentive but not overbearing. Chris our server and Ryan the sommelier made our experience unforgettable. The octopus was the best I have every had because it was simply done but cooked perfectly. Worth every penny. "

  • "From the moment you step into Carbone (named "carbon" - as most things are grilled at a super high temp), your evening begins. The food is fantastic but the room is equally delicious: it's nicely lit, the floors are covered in varying designs of retro black and white tile, there's a cozy bar in the back to grab a pre-dinner drink and swing your hips motown -- all under a beautifully restored tin roof. We tried many things on the menu - that's what everyone does, so go hungry! Homemade Rigatoni in vodka sauce, grilled branzino (favorite), grilled octopus, baked clams, veal parm... All delicious!"

  • "Dinner-menu for lunch, wine-recommendation for a simple white wine for more than 100 dollars, food recommendation for more than 80 dollars, charging two bottles of water - but the second one was not ordered and only one glass used. This was no fun - this was a tourist-trap. Food was okay, bread was good."

  • "Carbobe is definitely one of the best Italian restaurants I have ever been. The food is exceptional as well as the service. The ambience is very cosy. It deserves a visit. We will go again!!"

  • "So ok... Outside it doesn't look like much. Especially when your reservation could only be made for 11:30PM. BUT THE FOOD TASTES HOMEMADE; THE STAFF IS YOUNG AND PERSONABLE AND; the ambience is lively even late at night while not too loud. To top it off, the food is in huge portions and meant to be shared! #deliciousandworthtit"

  • "Loved our lunch here. What a fun atmosphere, great soundtrack (The Supremes!) and gigantic portions of excellent food. The meatballs are great to pair with the rigatoni spicy vodka. The market price whole fish (sea bream for us) is one of the more reasonable entrees and desserts are decadent but delicious. Definitely a place you can bring kids – we saw a couple well-behaved cuties dining with their families."

  • "Had a friend in from LA - and wanted to go somewhere "NYC". This was it - Great host/greet staff - amazing and fun waiter. Food Delicious. Music was great (had a little goodfellas feel to it.....) The baked clams were insane - and both pastas we had were amazing. The prices are pretty steep steakhouse prices - but the food is worth it. "

  • "We were expecting a stylish, high-quality lunch at Carbone. We didn't get it. Service is v. slow. Each time we asked about the food, we were told: "It's coming" but no one bothered to check. When it did come, the pasta I ordered - spaghetti with clams - was so peppery that neither I nor my (US) partner could eat it. We sent it back. The manager asked where I come from (the UK) and said perhaps that was why I didn't like it. Is that the right thing to do, accuse the customer rather than accept it might have been wiser to signpost the spiciness of the dish on the menu? He grandly offered to deduct the cost of the uneaten food from our bill. Such generosity. Coffee very slow to arrive too. We were screaming to leave by the end."

  • "Our first dinner at Carbone delivered on all fronts. Hospitable welcome, terrific space (cozy not cramped), terrific service (waiter gave the impression he knew it all . . and did), inventive and delicious cuisine (eggplant appetizer lingers on my mind . . this is no ordinary red sauce joint). A little sticker shock when the bill arrived (esp market-priced seafood entree near $100) but we left very happy having expereinced one of our more memorable dinners in years. We'll be back!"
