A word from Carbone Coal Fired Pizza - Taylor Ave
July 12th, 2011 - The First Coal Fired Pizza Restaurant in Canada opens its doors.

Inside Carbone Coal Fired Pizza, an 850-degree anthracite-coal-burning oven reigns unrivaled by a stove-top or fryer, birthing the restaurant’s signature Italian-style pizzas. The result is a perfectly charred, yet soft crust made from organic flour grown in the Canadian prairies. Goat cheese, calabrese salami, and fresh ricotta top the pies, just to name a few toppings. Appetizers, salads and sandwiches rely on fresh ingredientsContinued

Diner Reviews
  • "The pizza here is better than any other I've ever had. The atmosphere has a modern feel to it and was not very noisy."

  • "Food was delicious and more than worth the reasonable and more than a less-than-timely wait. Recommend making a reso! You will get in on time and not be disappointed! An authentic Italian pizza experience! Ciao :)"

  • "Didn't like the plastic bowls and plates but everything else was great!"

  • "Pizza was great as usual, wings are still the best in the city although lacked the usual covering of caramelized onions."

  • "Me and my wife wanted to try something new, and we were not disappointed. Food and service were excellent. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone."

  • "Really enjoyed our family supper at this location with my husband and son. Carbone is listed as family-friendly but has no kids menu or options and should maybe consider some oven-fired pastas as some of its peers do so that something a little easier to handle for smaller patrons is available. Their marinara sauce is one of the best I've ever tasted and though our pizza crust had great consistency it was a little bland flavour-wise. If you're looking for quick, yummy, gourmet pizza by low light, it's delicious. Bonfire Bistro is in the same neighbourhood with more selection and similar prices so though I can't say anything bad of Carbone, that market is still being led by BB."

  • "Thought we'd try Carbone Pizza. Have to admit, it was underwhelming. Saw 3 different servers hovering around tables that looked done, but took a while before anyone came to our table. Keep in mind there are only 6 tables in the place. We had a pepperoni & Italian sausage pizza. I was surprised that both toppings had very little flavour. Overall, not bad but nothing special. "

  • "Had a reservation, said it wasn't ready and had to wait for a table to be cleaned. Finally asked after 5-10 minutes if it was ready and got asked about why we didn't tell them we had a reservation (which we told the girl standing beside the girl who said that) and that our table was ready this whole time. Not impressed."

  • "We booked the day we went and were happy we did, it was full. Waitress was a little rushed with her tables and requests were eventually brought. Ordered appetizers to be followed by salad and our main course. Appetizers were good, pizza was great but I wish the salad had come out before the pizza and not after! Overall the meal was very good. They had the music turned up more than I care for and we did have to request that they change the TV to NHL hockey rather than the odd sport shows that were on."

  • "Food was delicious, especially love the new white pizza!! Was very disappointed they were out if wings!"

  • "Pizza was really good with the crunchy edges and very thin crust. I could eat a small by myself and not feel overly full and the service was very good."

  • "Amazing, unique pizza, very reasonable prices. Appetizers and dessert were great as well. A few craft beer choices made the meal even better."

  • "My boyfriend took me to Carbone for my birthday dinner. The drink specials were a good value, and our appetizers and pizza were delicious. Our waitress forgot my drink, and then when our appetizers came out she walked away without giving us cutlery. By the time we got her attention to get some cutlery our pizza was ready, so it was cold by the time we got to it. Overall I would give this restaurant a 4/5 because the food really was delicious and that's why I went there."

  • "We dined with another couple here for the first time, and were pleasantly surprised by the original menu and tasty food! The service is to standard - nothing fancy, but not lacking either. I tried the Barking Squirrel beer - excellent! And I'm a convert - was not a fan of arugula before, but on a pizza with goat cheese it's to die for!! We will definitely be coming back!"

  • "We had the Fresca pizza this time and was disappointed. Would expect double the amount of brushetta topping for the pizza (some pieces only had a couple pieces of tomato). We normally order the Bella and quite like that pizza. Please consider increasing the topping for the Fresca pizza. Thank you."

  • "It was a great night. The food and atmosphere was great. Our waitress seemed to forget about us at times, however, it was a great night."

  • "This was our 2nd time and consistent- not amazing but very good. Many reviews noted the crust being "limp" and I must agree. Although this was not bad, I think it's a personnel preference. We prefer a crust that has a crunch. When I reserved I indicated it was for my wife's birthday and nothing special was offered- no appetizer or desert offered... Not critical but would have been a nice touch."

  • "This was our second time at Carbone. Service was friendly and prompt. Pizza was as delicious as the first time we went. In fact, we ordered the same kind (procuitto, arugula and tomato) . We also ordered the shared sized caesar salad which was overpriced at 12+$. It was nothing fancy. Dressing was not the usual goopy, creamy store-bought kind, which was great. It seemed to be a homemade vinaigrette style, which I liked, but it didn't have much flavor. The croutons were quite hard and there was no BACON in the salad, which was slightly disappointing, I will for sure return for the pizza, however i'll pass pn the salad next time."

  • "After looking at previous reviews on Urban Spoon my husband and I decided to give Carbone a try We had a booking at 5:45 which I'm glad we did as by 6:00 it was packed and there were people waiting at the door for tables. On advice from other reviewers, we started with chicken wings which were pretty freaking good, tender, tasty and a slightly bbq flavour from the coal. I ordered the Izabella 12" pizza and my husband had the 12" inch Calabrese. Both were reminiscent of pizzas you would find in Italy, thin crispy crust, light on the toppings which is a nice change from what you normally get in Wpg. The service throughout was very good, attentive, not intrusive. We weren't rushed, our drinks were refilled without asking and I would go back."

  • "This was our First time visiting Carbones. The Flavors of the pizza and wings were fantastic. We were a bit disappointed at the pizza crust though. We were really looking forward to WELL DONE CRUST but found that it was actually undercooked and limp. Next time we will ask for it to be left in the oven longer. Waitress was very pleasant but the drink refills were lacking."

  • "My husband and I each have a bowl of the soup and then share the Bella pizza. Great food, fresh ingredients. Can sit in front of the cooks making the pizzas (nice and warm). Definitely recommend!"

  • "The staff are friendly like family. They all treat their customers with a show of gratitude through their curtesy, follow up to your needs and accommodating an experience of good times, good food, good wine and good feel. I recommend Carbone's and cannot wait of their 2nd location to open. Thank you very much to Managing Partner Ben for taking and passing on a photo of my visit earlier this year. Love it! • "The food was great and so was the service but we were a little old for the restaurant. Our son finished the left overs and was excited to try it out."

  • "I have been to Carbone's a few times now and each time I have gone I have enjoyed my meal and the service. The staff is both friendly and knowledgeable. The pizza, soups and salads are all wonderful and fresh. I would recommend this place for lunch or a low-key dinner with friends in a great atmosphere."

  • "The pizza was delicious however the service wasn't exactly great. We barely saw our waiter and their seemed to be waitresses walking around with food and not knowing where it was suppose to go."

  • "Turkey meatballs were so tender and flavourful - definitely the stand out. There are warning signs on the building and website that proclaim "Pizza is cooked well-done!" but our crust was not crispy. The last time I went there were some beautiful char marks on the crust and this time it seemed slightly underdone. Overall nice meal, good price."
